Edith G. Neubert

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Edith G. Neubert, 88, a resident of Valley View Nursing Home, formerly of Hancock, died Thursday, June 4, 1998 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.

Born Sept. 1, 1909, in Bedford County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Emma Browning Smith.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Boden, and her second husband, John Neubert.

She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hancock.

She is survived by two daughters, Ruth Lashley and Hilda Pryor, both of Hancock; three sons, Elmer Boden of Hancock, John Neubert Jr. of Frostburg, Md., and Richard Neubert of Indiana; a brother, Stanley Smith of Lyons, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Blanche Thompson; a son, James Edward Neubert; a sister, Marie Smith; two brothers, Cyrus Smith and Hildebert Smith; a half brother, William Karns; and a grandson.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Catholic cemetery. The Rev. George W. Glick will officiate.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Memorial donations may be made to the organization of your choice.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home in Hancock.

Bertha B. Taylor

RIPPON, W.Va. - Bertha Bell Taylor, 74, of Rippon, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at Greater South East Community Hospital, Washington, D.C.

Born Feb. 9, 1924, in Myerstown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph G. and Bessie L. Johnson Newman.

Her husband, Richard Thomas Taylor, died in 1994.

She retired from Dixie-Narco Inc. in Ranson.

She was a member of Sylvannah Baptist Church in Rippon.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia A. Taylor of Temple Hills, Md., and Harriet B. Taylor of Norfolk, Va.; three sisters, Dorothy V. Clark of Shepherdstown, W.Va., Lolita Robinson of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Josephine M. Thomas of Capitol Heights, Md.; four brothers, Louis M. Newman of Baltimore, Richard T. Newman and Charles L. Newman, both of Charles Town, and James H. Newman of Winchester, Va.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Wesley Taylor; two sisters, Laura Russ and Elizabeth Jackson; and a brother, George N. Newman.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at House of Prayer Church of God No. 4, 501 W. Congress St., Charles Town, W.Va. The Rev. Lawrence Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Myerstown cemetery.

Friends will be received at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home Monday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Paul W. DeHaven

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Paul W. DeHaven, 72, of Falling Waters, and formerly of Glengary, W.Va., died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at his home.

Born Sept. 6, 1925, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lester W. and Minnie D. Parkinson DeHaven.

He owned and operated Paul W. DeHaven General Contracting.

He was a Methodist.

He was a member of Martinsburg I.B.P.O. Elks 778.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Gillenwater DeHaven; a daughter, Cathy Nystrom of Herndon, Va.; a son, Paul Douglas DeHaven of Alexandria, Va.; a stepson, William F. Wilson of Centerville, Va.; a sister, Margaret K. Ruble of Clearbrook, Va.; a brother, Kenneth S. DeHaven of Hay Market, Va.; four grandchildren; a stepgranddaughter; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, R. Steven DeHaven; and two brothers, Wesley C. DeHaven and Ralph J. DeHaven.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. G. Edward Grove will officiate. Burial will be in Central Chapel cemetery in Hedgesville, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Max E. Mauck

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Max "Ace" Everett Mauck, 69, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at his home.

Born July 2, 1928, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Everett R. and Esta M. Strickler Mauck.

He attended Martinsburg High School.

He retired from Mack Trucks Inc. in Hagerstown after 24 years of service as a technician.

He served with the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.

He was a Protestant.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nancy G. Shane Mauck; two daughters, Terri L. Laing of Inwood, W.Va., and Cristie "Cris" A. Binhammer of Richmond, Va.; a son, Randall "Randy" S. Mauck of Martinsburg; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, David Wayne Mauck.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Arlene Carr will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery with military honors conducted by Berkeley Post 14 American Legion and Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Douglas M. Higgs

MILLVILLE, W.Va. - Douglas McArthur Higgs, 55, of Millville, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at his home.

Born June 19, 1942, in Engle Switch, W.Va., he was the son of the late Earl VanBuren and Elsie Harding Higgs.

He was a carpenter.

He was of the Pentecostal faith.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Kirby Higgs; one daughter, Sandra D. Higgs of Millville; one son, David W. Higgs of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; four sisters, Barbara Painter and Sandra Fillinger, both of Halltown, W.Va., Etta Transfillicus of Harpers Ferry, and Doris Danner of Purcellville, Va.; three brothers, Earl Higgs of Hagerstown, Roger Higgs of Pennsylvania, and Richard Higgs of Bakerton, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Joanne Taylor and Erma Potter; and two brothers, Harold Higgs and James Higgs.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home in Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Cedric Sullivan will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home today and Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Earl L. Marlin

Earl L. Marlin, 81, of 1048 Valley Brook Drive, Hagerstown, who died Friday, June 5, 1998, also is survived by two sons, Dennis R. Marlin of Hagerstown, and Ronald E. Marlin of Racine, Wis.

Wilson I. Hoffman

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Wilson Irving Hoffman, 77, of Kearneysville, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born July 16, 1920, in Libertytown, Md., he was the son of the late Merle and Edith Bayle Hoffman.

He worked as a plumber for R.F. Warner Inc.

He was in the U.S. Naval Services and received the American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hoffman; a daughter, Deborah Lynne Shankle of Frederick, Md.; two sons, Wilson Irving Hoffman Jr. of Havre de Grace, Md., and Robert Wayne Hoffman Sr. of Westminster, Md.; two sisters, Ruth Redmond and Margaret Myers, both of Frederick; three brothers, Oscar Hoffman, Allen Hoffman and William Hoffman, all of Frederick; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Leonard Hoffman.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home in Ranson, W.Va. Pastor Joseph D. Burwell will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Ernest C. Wilhide Jr.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Ernest C. Wilhide Jr., 75, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at City Hospital.

Born May 29, 1923, he was the son of the late Ernest C. Wilhide Sr. and Mabel Long Wilhide.

He retired from North American Housing in Point of Rocks, Md.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Fox Wilhide; three daughters, Joyce Gormours of Hagerstown, Vicki Hutchins of Frederick, Md., and Terri Gue of Martinsburg; a son, Ernest C. Wilhide III of Frederick; two brothers, Paul T. Wilhide of Walkersville, Md., and Joseph Wilhide of Sharpsburg; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Molesworth and Sarah Doody; and a brother, Jay Wilhide.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg, with a service at 8:30 p.m. conducted by Calvin Hess. Burial will be private.

Mae B. Payne

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Mae Belle Latimer Payne, 99, of Charles Town, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born May 18, 1899, in Jackson County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late James Stephen and Frances Elizabeth Davis Latimer.

She formerly was employed as a seamstress for Bell Overall Co. in Gainesville, Ga.

She was a Baptist.

She is survived by a son, William H. Payne of Fayetteville, Pa.; two grandchildren, John William Payne and Andrea Louise Lynn; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Henry Otis Cooper; six sisters; and four brothers, Bill Latimer, Edward Latimer, John Latimer and Howard Latimer.

Services will be private. Burial will be in Rest Haven cemetery in Frederick, Md.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial donations may be made to Salvation Army, 505 Virginia Ave., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.

Fannie V. Washington

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Fannie V. Washington, 84, of Shepherdstown, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at City Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Will and Sadie Thomas Dozier.

Her husband, Thomas C.M. Washington, died in 1993.

She retired from Kings Daughters School of Nursing in Martinsburg, W.Va.

She was a member of St. John Baptist Church in Shepherdstown, where she was a deaconess and mother of the church.

She is survived by eight daughters, Rosa Lee Shanton, Betty Washington, Virginia Brown and Patricia Harrison, all of Shepherdstown, Eleanor Braxton of Fredericksburg, Va., and Mary Thomas, Anna Hall and Wanda Brown, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a son, Thomas M.C. Washington Jr. of Newport News, Va.; 30 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Williams; four sisters, Nellie Clark, Sadie McDonald, Maggie McDonald and Emma Kidrick; three brothers, Richard Dozier, Preston Dozier and George Dozier; and a granddaughter.

Services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church in Shepherdstown. The Rev. Joe Lyles will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the church Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
