George W. Morris

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - George William Morris, 101, of Berkeley Springs and formerly of Summersville, W.Va., died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at his home.

Born Dec. 29, 1896, in Dille, W.Va., he was the son of the late G. Wyatt and Martha Payne Morris.

He retired as a coal miner.

A veteran of World War I, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was a member of United Mine Workers Union.

He is survived by his wife, Estella Caroline Rogers Morris; four daughters, Etta Jean Davis of Berkeley Springs, Etta Jean Flint of Ohio, Maxine Benton and Auline White, both of Dille, W.Va.; four sons, James Daniel Morris of Huntington, Pa., Garnie Morris of Summersville, W.Va., Esker Morris of Little Birch, W.Va., and George William Morris Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; one sister, Ida Holcomb of Maysel, W.Va.; two half-brothers, Obert Morris of Little Birch and Aundrel Morris of Virginia; three half-sisters, Onie Vance and Opal Conway, both of Clarksburg, W.Va., and Faye Peirson of Birch River, W.Va.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Waters Funeral Chapel, 411 Waters St., Summersville. The Rev. James Daniel Morris will officiate. Burial will be in West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin, W.Va.

The family received friends Wednesday, July 1, at Waters Funeral Chapel.

Local arrangements were by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.

Frances B. Cordell

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Frances Brophy Cordell, 66, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at her home.

Born Sept. 29, 1931, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late William Joseph and Helen Brown Brophy Sr.

She was a 1949 graduate of St. Joseph's High School.

She retired in 1992 from the Internal Revenue Service Center, Martinsburg, after 20 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Anthony Cordell; two daughters, Patti Jo Lord and Mary Beth McGowan-Whitmore, both of Martinsburg; four sons, John Casey Cordell, Joseph Brophy Cordell, Anthony Clay Cordell and Patrick Christopher Cordell, all of Martinsburg; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William Joseph Brophy Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Rev. John V. DiBacco Jr. will be celebrant. Burial prayers will be in Old Norborne cemetery. The family will meet at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg, at 9:30 a.m.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, where a vigil service will be held at 7:45 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401; or St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 233 S. Queen St., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Frank A. Hemenway Jr.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Frank Allen Hemenway Jr., 76, of Shepherdstown, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at his home.

Born Nov. 24, 1921, in Greenwick, N.Y., he was the son of the late Frank A. and Amalia Hemenway.

He was a graduate of Colgate University.

He held management positions in the food industry.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force.

He was a member of New Street United Methodist Church, Shepherdstown.

He was a past president and past secretary of Rotary International in Albany, Ore., and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow; and was president of Albany-Millersville, Oregon Economic Development Council from 1982 to 1990. He was a member of the Rohrersville Band.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan Overton Hemenway; three daughters, Christine Kane of Trenton, N.J., Kathleen Weber of Rochester, N.Y., and Elizabeth Livengood of Chubbuck, Idaho; one son, Frank W. Hemenway of Woodstown, N.J.; one brother, Henry Jack Hemenway of Stonington, Maine; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Margaret Blumenstock and Miriam Estella Majors.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at New Street United Methodist Church, Shepherdstown. The Rev. Wendy Shullenbarger will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401; or American Cancer Society, 1610 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Harry R. Abshire

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Harry R. "Buddy" Abshire, 62, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at City Hospital.

Born Sept. 5, 1935, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry Lee and Vienia Chrisman Abshire.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Deanna May Abshire.

He was a member of Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW; and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.

He is survived by five daughters, Teresa Hutchinson, Tonia Abshire, Abby Eccleston and Annette Barragan, all of Martinsburg, and April Abshire of Harrisonburg, Va.; one stepson, Thomas Miller of Martinsburg; six sisters, Juanita Snow of Inwood, W.Va., Betty Clanton, Marge Avella, Peggy Stewart and Jane Tennant, all of Martinsburg, and Joyce Brown of Hanover, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Lee Walls.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. L. Jack Rudy will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alice L. Hill

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Alice L. Hill, 70, of Shepherdstown, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at her home.

Born Dec. 1, 1927, in Nutter Fort, W.Va., she was the daughter of Beatrice Gosnell White of Lakeland, Fla., and the late Arlester Berlin White.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. C. Hill.

She was a member of Marvin Chapel United Methodist Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Slayton of Dawson Springs, Ky., and Susan Stanley of Shepherdstown; one son, Ralph Monroe Caraway of Maine; two sisters, Ann Perez of El Paso, Texas, and Dorothy Wilson of Lakeland, Fla.; two brothers, Norbert White of Sims, N.C., and James A. White of Virginia Beach, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Dennis E. Jackman will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Esther M. Spiker

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Esther M. Spiker, 98, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at City Hospital.

Born July 6, 1899, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James William and Daisy Irene VanMetre Spiker.

She was a member of Arden United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Willard Brown Sunday School class.

She is survived by cousins.

Services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. James Embrey will officiate. Burial will be in Gerrardstown (W.Va.) Presbyterian cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

B. Louise Morgret

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - B. Louise Morgret, 83, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 28, 1914, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William Clarence and Fara Ellen Ambrose Yost.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Claude Morgret, in 1955.

She attended Oakland School.

She worked as a seamstress at Jacob's Brothers Sewing Factory, Hancock. She also sold Avon products, worked seasonally at canneries and was a homemaker.

She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church, Morgan County.

She is survived by a daughter, Lou Ellen Michael of Hagerstown; a son, John Claude Morgret Jr. of Bedford, Pa.; three sisters, Frances Wachter and Janet Avey, both of Berkeley Springs, and Mildred Guttridge of Mount Rainier, Md.; a brother, William C. "Sonny" Yost of Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Peggy Allemong and Pauline Rinehart; and two brothers, Denver Lee Yost and Robert Vernon Yost.

Private services and burial will be at Oakland United Methodist Church cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Humane Society of Morgan County, 4100 Valley Road, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.

Frank A. Hemenway Jr.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -Donations in memory of Frank Allen Hemenway Jr., of Shepherdstown, who died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401; or American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

John E. McClain

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - John Edward "Mac" McClain, 80, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at his home.

Born Sept. 22, 1917, in Oka, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Preston McClain and Maud Haverty McClain.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, serving during World War II in the Pacific and during the Korean War.

He retired from Walter Reed Army Institute of Research after 10 years of service as a medical photographer.

He was a member and elder of Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of Kent Memorial Post 5370 VFW in Kentland, Md., and American Legion Post 0236 in Sharpsburg. He was a brother of Mount Nebo Lodge 91 AF & AM of Shepherdstown; and a member of Scottish Rite and Almas Temple in Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Wellington McClain; three daughters, Barbara Jean McKimmie of Huntingtown, Md., Virginia Lee Baumgarner of Chesapeake Beach, Md., and Kathleen Jo Goodspeed of Marco Island, Fla.; a son, John William McClain of Ijamsville, Md.; a sister, Pauline Blair Shockey of Belington, W.Va.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Leo McClain.

A memorial service will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Randall Tremba will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25402; or Shepherdstown Fire Department, P.O. Box F, Shepherdstown, W.Va. 25443.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
