MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Ethel Virginia Tyson, 87, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at Heartland of Martinsburg.
Born July 9, 1911, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Grace Balenger Manford.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Charles "Chap" Grove, in 1947; and by her second husband, Clyde R. Tyson, on April 14, 1998.
She formerly was employed by National Fruit.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Jean Snow of Martinsburg; two stepdaughters, Frances Lewis of Winchester, Va., and Penny Faye Anderson of Clearbrook, Va.; a son, Albert Charles Grove of Alexandria, Va.; two stepsons, Baker Tyson and Tommy Tyson, both of Winchester; two grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Marie Houser; and a stepgrandson.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Paul C. Stanley will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ava S. Dolin
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Ava S. Dolin, 88, of Tuscawilla Hills, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at her home.
Born July 24, 1910, in St. Albans, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Nora Scott.
Her husband, Vernon G. Vandelinde, died in 1952. Her second husband, Lance H. Dolin, died in 1995.
She was a graduate of St. Albans High School.
She was employed in the St. Albans City Clerk's Office from 1947 to 1969. She also was St. Albans city clerk and treasurer for many years.
She is survived by a son, David Vandelinde of Bath, England; and two grandsons, Robert Scott Vandelinde of Raleigh, N.C., and Eric David Vandelinde of Bath.
She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Charles Town, W.Va., and previously was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in St. Albans.
Services and burial will be held Wednesday in St. Albans.
Friends will be received at the residence, 103 W. Hall Drive, Tuscawilla Hills, Charles Town, on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Local arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.
Harrison L. Messick
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Harrison Lee "Pappy" Messick, 65, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at his home.
Born Oct. 5, 1932, in Glengary, W.Va., he was the son of the late Herman V. and Mazie Myers Messick.
He was employed by Perry Engineering.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann Funk Messick; three daughters, Brenda Berry of Fellsmere, Fla., Jenese Pitzer of Cumberland, Md., and Jennifer Clark of Martinsburg; two stepdaughters, Lisa A. Leopold and Sharon K. Shifflett, both of Martinsburg; three sons, Joseph Price of Charles Town, W.Va., Steven Ray Shifflett and Terry Lee Shifflett, both of Martinsburg; three stepsons, Ernest Wilson Shifflett, James Howard Shifflett and Michael Wayne Shifflett, all of Martinsburg; a sister, Margaret E. Turner of Martinsburg; three brothers, Herman V. Messick, Hamilton H. Messick and Harry Messick, all of Martinsburg; 14 grandchildren; 19 stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Lee Allen; twin sisters, Minnie and Mamie Messick; and two brothers, Harold W. Messick and Hollard V. Messick.
Services will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Michael Bageant will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Harlan P. Sharff
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Harlan P. "Port" Sharff, 89, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at City Hospital.
Born Dec. 24, 1908, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Walter C. and Lottie Mae Parkinson Sharff.
He retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg.
He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hamilton Sharff; and a brother, Walter Cecil Sharff of Martinsburg.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. John M. Emmert will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Nora G. Combs
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Nora G. Combs, 86, formerly of 1008 Grant Place, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Care Haven of Berkeley in Martinsburg.
Born Jan. 16, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Columbus L. and Jane Cordray Glasscock.
She was a 1930 graduate of Morgantown High School. She attended Morgantown Business College; and graduated from West Virginia University in 1937 with a bachelor of science degree.
She taught commercial subjects at Capon Bridge High School, Martinsburg Business College and Martinsburg Senior High School, where she retired after nine years. She also taught a secretarial class in 1964-1965 at Ramer Memorial School Building.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, was treasurer and Circle teacher for United Methodist Women, and was treasurer and part-time teacher of Philathea Sunday School Class.
She was a member of Emeritus Club of West Virginia University and the Alumni Association and a member of Berkeley County Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Adolf W. Combs; two brothers, Paul C. Glasscock of Martinsburg and Benjamin L. Glasscock of Morgantown, W.Va.; one niece and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, John C. Glasscock and James A. Glasscock.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. G. Edward Grove will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends today from 4 to 7 p.m.
Trammell E. James
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Trammell Ellsworth James, 72, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Care Haven of Berkeley.
Born Oct. 4, 1925, in Gerrardstown, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ernest James, Mary Ellen McDaniel James Howell and his stepfather, the late Charles Manuel Howell.
He retired from General Motors Corp. after 19 years.
He was a member of Mountainside Tabernacle and the Victory in Jesus Gospel Group.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Zombro James; three daughters, Joyce Marie Ruth of Topsham, Maine, and Shirley A. Myers and Brenda K. Myers, both of Martinsburg; three sons, Phillip W. James, Ronald L. James and Randy C. James, all of Martinsburg; four sisters, Thelma Hayes of Martinsburg, Charlotte Tozier of Florida, Marlene Ricketts and Carolene Caniford, both of Charles Town; three brothers, Albert James of Arden, W.Va., Richard C. James of Hagerstown and Ernest James of Martinsburg; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Edward Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Annette C. White
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Annette Christie White, 69, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born Sept. 8, 1928, in Neptune, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Arthur Lewis and Margaret Anderson Hartman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira William Tinney.
She was a housewife.
She is survived by a daughter, Marcella Sixeas of Greencastle, Pa.; three sons, Wayne Arlen Tinney and Darrell Alan Tinney, both of Berkeley Springs, and Kevin Lawrence Tinney of Jackson, N.J.; two sisters, Kay Penn of Mercersburg, Pa., and Joan Stembell of Spring Lake Heights, N.J.; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Hartman.
A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Steve Dawson will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

John W. Lloyd Jr.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - John William "Buddy" Lloyd Jr., 82, of Gainesville, died Friday, July 17, 1998, at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville.
Born Nov. 7, 1915, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late John William and Ella Cora Lloyd.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.
He was a member of the American Legion in Newberry, Fla.
He had been a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Martinsburg. He was affiliated with Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Florida.
He is survived by two sons, John William Lloyd III of Winchester, Va., and Charles Richard Lloyd of Alexandria, Va.; three daughters, Tina Lloyd, Diana Lloyd and Stephanie Lloyd, all of Gainesville; and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Nora Lloyd Sellers, Cora Lloyd Crowl and Mary Lloyd Dunn; and two brothers Robert L. Lloyd and Harold L. Lloyd.
A graveside memorial service was held Monday, Aug. 10, at Rosedale cemetery, Martinsburg. The Rev. James D. Riley officiated.
