MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Ruth Elizabeth Ashton Mosse, 79, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at her home.
Born Oct. 12, 1918, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George R. and Bessie Elliott Ashton.
Her husband, Max Wilson Mosse, preceded her in death.
She was a 1936 graduate of Martinsburg High School and a graduate of Shepherd College.
She was a Methodist.
A retired teacher, she taught at Pikeside Elementary and Valley View Elementary schools.
She was a member of Golden Rule Martinsburg Chapter 69 Order of the Eastern Star, AARP, NEA, Shepherd College Alumni Association and Shepherd College Emeritus Club. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
She is survived by a daughter, Yvonne Gay Paul of Winter Springs, Fla.; a son, Max Ashton Mosse of Martinsburg; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. Raymond T. Moreland will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Dwight A. Mechem
GREAT CACAPON, W.Va. - Dwight Arthur Mechem, 20, of Great Cacapon, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, near his home in Great Cacapon.
Born May 2, 1978, in Winchester, Va., he was the son of Darlene Gail Ridgeway Mechem of Great Cacapon, and the late Kenneth Hugh Mechem. He was the stepson of Paul S. Miller of Great Cacapon.
He attended Berkeley Springs High School in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Great Cacapon.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sisters, Laura K. Mechem and Teresa G. Mechem, both of Great Cacapon; one brother, Kenneth Aaron Mechem of Great Cacapon; one stepbrother, Justin P. Miller of Great Cacapon; maternal grandparents, Virginia Smith Ridgeway of Great Cacapon, Arthur Ridgeway of Great Cacapon; paternal grandparents, Dwight M. and Pearl C. Holliday Mechem of Great Cacapon; one niece; three nephews; his girlfriend, Ashleigh Brashears and her daughter, Amelia Brashears of Great Cacapon.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church, Great Cacapon. The Rev. Roger E. Burtner will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Nebo cemetery in Great Cacapon.
The family will receive friends at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs, today from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open from noon to 9 p.m. today.
James R. May Jr.
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - James Robert May Jr., 66, of Shepherdstown, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Aug. 4, 1932, he was the son of the late James Robert and Ethel Irene Prather May Sr.
He served with the U.S. Army for 24 years. He was a sergeant and served two tours of duty in Vietnam and one in Korea. He served with the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. He was a police officer in Georgia.
He was employed by Quad Graphics in Martinsburg.
He was a member of the U.S. Army National Guard; and Newton D. Baker Post, 896 VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Sim Sam Ye May; a daughter, Isabelle Irene May of Shepherdstown; a son, James Robert May III of Charles Town, W.Va.; three sisters, Louise McDonald of Illinois, and Isabelle Myers and Betty Angle of Berkeley County, W.Va.; three brothers, Carlton J. May, Max L. May and James Allen May, all of Berkeley County; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Virginia Rice; and two brothers, Nelson R. May and Fillmore Elwood May.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. The Rev. John Divico Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Betty V. Crim
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Betty Virginia Crim, 67, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at her home.
Born Dec. 12, 1930, she was the daughter of Herbert S. and Isabelle Wiggington Anderson of Martinsburg.
Her husband, Robert L. Crim, preceded her in death.
She was a member of Winchester Avenue Christian Church.
She also was a member of AARP, Belle Boyd Club and Martinsburg Womans Club.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one stepdaughter, Bonnie Bennett; one stepson, Dale Crim of Martinsburg; three stepgrandchildren; and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Ronald G. Anderson.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Douglas J. Hollida will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Mildred M. Benson
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mildred McCauley Benson, 89, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at City Hospital.
Born April 12, 1909, in Dunmore, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank C. McCauley and Florence Heidig McCauley.
Her husband, Dwight M. Benson, preceded her in death.
She was a member of Bunker Hill (W.Va.) Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by two sons, Dwight M. Benson of Martinsburg, and Robert M. Benson of Whitethorn, Calif.; one sister, June E. Groff of Lockport, N.Y.; one brother, Warren P. McCauley of Mount Clemens, Mich.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Frank S. Benson.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John E. Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Durham, N.C.

Marion F. Baumgardner
HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Marion F. Baumgardner, 69, of Harpers Ferry, and formerly of Sugar Grove, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at his home.
Born Jan. 17, 1929, in Marion, Va., he was the son of the late Rex French and Bessie Jenkins Baumgardner.
He retired from the State of Maryland as a supervisor in maintenance.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth Baldwin Baumgardner; one daughter, Brenda Sprinkel of Charles Town, W.Va.; two sisters, Clara Mae Mohr of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Helen Sidur of Ware, Mass.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Steven Rex Baumgardner.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel in Martinsburg. The Rev. Allen Elliott will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Jessie Mae Smith, 94, a resident of Shenandoah Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at the center.
Born Aug. 1, 1904, in Barnesville, Md., she was the daughter of the late A. Worth and Jessie Phillips Wood.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ranson, W.Va.
She is survived by one daughter, Elsie M. Webster of Charles Town; five sisters, Iva Bavan of Baltimore, Helen Layman of Upper Marlboro, Md., Hazel Ouch and Evelyn Carlins, both of Frederick, Md., and Elsie Pyles of Barnesville; one brother, Rodney E. Wood of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Hattie Montgomery; and two brothers, Warner Dave Wood and Stanford Wood.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. Pastor Mike Withem will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Va.

John N. Parkinson
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - John N. Parkinson, 73, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.
Born Dec. 10, 1924, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Rev. H. Lloyd and Mary Grace Buckingham Parkinson.
He was a 1950 graduate of West Virginia School of Forestry.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific and Japan.
He was formerly employed as District Ranger, U.S. Forest Service and a Berkeley County school teacher.
He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.
He was a member of General Adam Stephens Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution; Harpers Ferry Camp 6 Sons of the Union Veterans; and Henry Kyd Douglas Camp 199 Sons of Confederate Veterans; Martinsburg Lions Club; American Legion Post 14; and Berkeley County Association of Retired School Employees.
He received the Lion's International President's award and medal for work with the Lions Quest program.
He is survived by his wife, Gisela Herbel Parkinson; a daughter, Nancy Jean Riley of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two sons, John N. Parkinson II of Tucson, Ariz. and James L. Parkinson of Hayfork, Calif.; three stepchildren, Mikel W. Reid of Marlowe, W.Va., Brenda Lee White of California and Bettina M. Fiery of Martinsburg; a sister, Betty Brigham of Haverford, Pa.; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William L. Parkinson.
A memorial service will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Otterbein United Methodist Church. The Rev. William Merki will officiate. Burial will be private.
