Mark A. Lewis

GREAT CACAPON, W.Va. - Mark Alan Lewis, 46, of Great Cacapon, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at his home.

Born Jan. 28, 1952, in Wheeling, W.Va., he was the son of John Henry and Gladys Lorraine Huntsman Lewis of Warrenton, Va.

He was a 1970 graduate of Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria, Va.

He served in the U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Team during the Vietnam War.

He was a self-employed welder in Fairfax, Va. He and his wife owned and operated Cozy Critters Pet and Feed Store in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., since 1993.

He was a follower of Nature Religions of the Native Americans.

He was instrumental in establishing The Pet-A-Fair Humane Society fundraiser. He received the Humane Society's Outstanding Service Award for 1997.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Jackie M. Lewis; a son, Christopher L. Lewis of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; a sister, Jackie Ennis of Warrenton; two brothers, Jon Lewis and Keith Lewis, both of Warrenton; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Pam Lewis.

Services will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. The funeral home will be open today from noon to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Humane Society of Morgan County, 4100 Valley Road, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Jeanette E. Guise

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Jeanette Elizabeth Guise, 86, of Berkeley Springs, and formerly of Springfield Gardens, Queens, N.Y., died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.

Born June 24, 1912, in Queens, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Anna Bruner Bortscheller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Guise, in 1997.

She attended public schools in Queens.

She was a homemaker.

She was a Protestant.

She was a member and past worthy matron of Chapter 784, Order of the Eastern Star, Queens.

She is survived by a daughter, Jeanette Baggot-Guise of Berkeley Springs; a granddaughter, Caitlin Mossburg of Frederick, Md.; a grandson, Sean McNamara of Elmira, N.Y.; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Peter Bortscheller, Henry Bortscheller and Jacob Bortscheller.

Services and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Morgan County, 4100 Valley Road, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411; or L.E.H. Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 235, Tuckerton, N.J. 08087.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.

Estelle E. Upwright

LEETOWN, W.Va. - Estelle Elizabeth Upwright, 76, of Leetown, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.

Born Dec. 8, 1921, in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Nora Dailey Dillow.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon R. Upwright, in 1990.

She was a homemaker.

She was a Methodist.

She was a member of Leetown Homemakers Extension Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Olivia D. "Doll" Haley of Severn, Md.; two sons, Leon R. "Buddy" Upwright Jr. of Middleway, W.Va., and Gary Upwright of Leetown; three sisters, Dorothy Dignazio of Charles Town, W.Va., Marguerite Giacobetti of Philadelphia and Lucy Mae Havens of Michigan; a brother, Mannie Dillow of Harpers Ferry; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary C. Appell, Edna B. Dillow, Grace V. Hardy, Ellen V. Armstrong and Gladys L. Harner; and a brother, Thomas Lee Dillow.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. Jane Kempster will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Bartholomew's Church, c/o Ted Viands, treasurer, P.O. Box 483, Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.

Blanche E.F. Ott

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Blanche Elizabeth Fritts Ott, 88, of Harpers Ferry, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Aug. 19, 1910, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John Eben and Florence Rebecca McSherry Fritts.

She and her husband owned and operated Elmer Addison Ott "The Maples" Farm in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., for many years.

She was a life member of Charles Town Baptist Church, Charles Town, W.Va.

She was a member of Jefferson County Farm Bureau.

She is survived by her husband, Elmer Addison Ott, whom she married April 16, 1927; three daughters, Eleanor L. "Polly" Glesner of Charles Town, Elizabeth "Pat" Thompson of Silver Spring, Md., and Mary K. "Kay" Payne of Hedgesville, W.Va.; three sons, John E. "Bud" Ott of Charles Town, Robert E. Ott of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Franklin D. Ott of Jefferson, Md.; a sister, Isabelle Fritts Hockensmith of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va.; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Donald P. Ott and Perry E. Ott; a sister, Leona Fritts; a brother, Robert W. Fritts; and a granddaughter.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Charles Town Baptist Church, 203 E. Congress St., Charles Town. Wyman Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Charles Town Baptist Church, 203 E. Congress St., Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.

Debra J. Burton

CAPON SPRINGS, W.Va. - Debra Jean Burton, 38, of Capon Springs, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at her home.

Born Jan. 18, 1960, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of Mildred Douglas DuBose of Inwood, W.Va., and the late George T. DuBose.

She was employed by Rest-Care in Wardensville, W.Va.

She was a member of Cedar Grove Christian Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Audrey Burton; two sons, Kenneth Wayne Riley of Marlowe, W.Va., and Paul William Riley at home; two sisters, Kathleen Marie Cogswell of Inwood and Gail Ann Wilhelm of Martinsburg; four brothers, George DuBose Jr. of Capon Springs, Douglas Wade DuBose and James Michael DuBose, both of Inwood, and Jeffrey Scott DuBose of Hedgesville, W.Va.; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Burial will be in Gerrardstown Presbyterian cemetery, Gerrardstown, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Naomi F. Fox

SLEEPY CREEK, W.Va. - Naomi Frances Fox, 68, of Sleepy Creek, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at her home.

Born Oct. 24, 1929, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Ruth Swain Trail.

She attended Hancock schools.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Chapel of Praise, Warfordsburg, Pa., and had been active with Word of Deliverance Church.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Calvin Curtis Fox; three daughters, Janet Spangler of Winston-Salem, N.C., Cheryl Cain of Sleepy Creek and Brenda Hashem of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; two sons, Dwight Fox of Sleepy Creek and Craig Fox of Cherry Run, W.Va.; a sister, Anna Hoffman of Hancock; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandsons; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford Trail, James Trail and Charles Trail.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. Ken H. Smith and the Rev. Jack Hiles Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel cemetery, Sleepy Creek, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open from noon to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Bethel Independent Church cemetery, c/o Ruth Ann Fox, Route 3, Box 229, Hedgesville, W.Va. 25427.

Mary F. Clark

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mary Frye Clark, 87, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at Heartland Nursing Home.

Born Oct. 29, 1910, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George N. and Minnie Dunham Frye.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Odell Clark.

She and her husband formerly owned and operated Odell Clark Moving and Storage Co. She was formerly employed at Perfection Garment Co.

She was a member of Central Chapel Church.

She is survived by a sister, Madeline F. Collis of Hedgesville, W.Va.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline F. Bayer, Ruby V. Gageby and Ruth G. Puffenburger; and four brothers, Bernard S. Frye, G. David Frye, Elwood S. Frye and Wayne Frye.

Services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. J. Brent Alderman will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Martinsburg Union Rescue Mission, 602 W. King St., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.
