Helen S. Pate
ALTOONA, Pa. -- Helen S. Pate, 84, formerly of Oak Hill, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in an Altoona hospital following an extended illness.
Born May 28, 1913, at Layland, she was the daughter of the late John Saul and Mittie McClung Wallen.
Mrs. Pate had worked 15 years as a key punch operator at ALCOA in Cleveland, Ohio, and retired as the owner and operator of Helen's Delicatessen, 1447 E. Main St., Oak Hill. She was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman D. Pate, on Nov. 30, 1984.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathy R. McConville of Altoona, Pa., and Betty Campbell of Oak Hill; two sisters, Gladys King of Fayetteville and Pauline Taylor of Yucca Valley, Calif.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be noon Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. David White officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of the services Saturday at the funeral home.

Jesse C. Patton
Jesse Carl Patton, 57, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, in Bothell, Wash.
Born June 30, 1940, at Pluto, he was the son of Pauline Surbaugh Bashaw of Leominster, Mass., and the late Carl Patton.
Mr. Patton was a graduate of Meadow Bridge High School, Marshall University and West Virginia University. He held a Ph.D. in chemistry.
He worked with Dupont Corporation, Bendix Corporation, Allied Signal, and the University of Washington as the professor of bioengineering. He then worked as the director of Micro Sensor Research at the Washington Technology Center before starting his own research and development firm, Patton Technologies Inc. in Bothell, Wash. Mr. Patton was a devout Christian.
Survivors include his wife of five years, Nancy Adair Patton; two sons, from his first marriage, Timothy Carl Patton of Charlotte, N.C., and James Bennett, from his second marriage; daughters, Cynthia Renee Patton of Bothell, Wash., from his first marriage, and Sarah Bauer and Kathleen Rademacher, from his second marriage; brother, Gary Withrow of Crescent Springs, Ky.; and five grandchildren, including Kelli Lynn Patton.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Smathers Funeral Home Chapel, 1109 Main St., Rainelle. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before the services Saturday at Smathers Funeral Home.

John R. Sturgill
OCEANA -- John Robert Sturgill, 83, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at a South Charleston hospital following surgery complications.
Born Sept. 15, 1914, at Appalachia, Va., he was the son of the late John R. and Maggie Sturgill.
Mr. Sturgill was a retired store manager for Island Creek Coal Company and Raleigh-Wyoming Mining Company at Edwight and Glen Rogers. He was a 34-year resident of Oceana.
Survivors include a son, John Robert Sturgill Jr. of St. Albans; two daughters, Pat North of St. Albans and Sandy Huddleston of Kimberly; a sister, Edith Couch of Bean Station, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. William M. Hoyle officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Friends may call two hours before the services Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to be made to the Sturgill-Reed Athletic Scholarship Fund, 65 Dogwood Road, St. Albans, W.Va. 25177. The fund will be administered by the West Virginia University Institute of Technology Golden Bear Athletic Club.

Born Jan. 10, 1941, at Whitby, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Frieda O'Keith Saye.
Mrs. White was a 1958 graduate of Stoco High School and was employed by Willow Run High School as a paraprofessional, having 17 years of service. She enjoyed her grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Anthony (Kelly) of Ypsilanti, and Scotty (Karen) of Belleville; a grandson, Nicholas; three granddaughters, Kelcie, Kayla and Kimberly; two brothers, Robert Saye Jr. and his wife, Eva, of West Virginia, and James Saye and his wife, Rosalie, of Ypsilanti; two sisters, Gloria Lilly and her husband, Clayton, of West Virginia, and Edna Saye of Ypsilanti; and several nieces and nephews.

OAK HILL -- John H. "Harry" Gray, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, in an Oak Hill medical center following a short illness.
Born Aug. 1, 1917, at Thurmond, he was the son of the late Comer and Grace Gertrude Gray.
Mr. Gray worked as a bank employee and officer for Merchants and Miners National Bank of Oak Hill, having retired in 1970.
He was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 AF and AM, and a former member of the Oak Hill Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Madelon Cooper Gray.
Survivors include a daughter, Harriette Gray Saunders and her husband, Samuel P.G., of Richmond, Va.; a son, John S. Gray and his wife, Margaret M., of West Palm Beach, Fla.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Oak Hill, with the Rev. James Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
