Edward L. Phillips
DELAND, Fla. -- Edward Lawrence "Larry" Phillips died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at the Alliance Center for Retirement Living, in DeLand, Fla.
Born Nov. 28, 1915, at Fairfield, Conn., he was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and three brothers.
He and his wife, Betty, served at Appalachian Bible College for 16 years, with Mr. Phillips having more than 30 years in Christian work.
Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a medical corpsman. He was employed for many years as a carpenter and cabinet maker and was a deacon in the Baptist Church of Danbury, Conn.
He served as superintendent of properties at the Appalachian Bible College in Bradley until his reitrement in 1987. He was an elder in the Fundamental Baptist Church of Prosperity.
From 1987 to 1993 he served in the maintenance department of D&D Missionary Homes in St. Petersburg, Fla., and served as an elder in The Alliance Church of DeLand Fla., since 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, a resident of McGarvey Center of the Alliance Center for Retirement Living, in DeLand, Fla.; a daughter, Jane Willoughby and her husband, Al, of Longwood, Fla.; a son, Tim Phillips and his wife, Sheila, of Oak Park, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Daryl Willoughby, Dawn (Andy) Moore, Toby Edwards Phillips, Kelby Phillips, Heidi Phillips, Heather Phillips, Hilary Phillips, Hannah Phillips and Bonnie Rose Phillips; a brother, Howell "Phil" Phillips of Aurora, Neb.; and a sister, Lorraine Lottero and her husband, Joe, of Inverness, Fla.
A memorial service was Monday at The Alliance Chapel in DeLand, Fla. Burial will follow in Oakdale cemetery.
Donations of sympathy may be made to the Appalachian Bible College, Bradley.

Dr. Peter Popovich
MORGANTOWN -- Dr. Peter Popovich of 334 Tyrone Road died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999.
Born Sept. 6, 1914, in Palmerton, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Eva Verbitsy Popovich.
Dr. Popovich graduated from Montgomery High School in 1932 and West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1936 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. He taught math and science at Kermit and Kingston High School. In 1941, he earned a master's degree from the University of Michigan and began working on his Ph.D. at Washington State University, which was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. He served as a lieutenant in the USNR at sea in forward areas in the Pacific, aboard the YDG7. In 1946, following the war, he accepted the position of instructor in the Chemistry Department at West Virginia University. He received his Ph.D. from Washington State University in 1961 and continued to teach chemistry at WVU until his retirement as professor of chemistry in 1979.
Dr. Popovich taught a vareity of chemistry courses at WVU. He is best known for his efforts in first-year chemistry, serving as first-year chemistry coordinator for 16 years. He taught about 15,000 students at WVU and served as the premedical advisor, counseling several thousand students.
During his distinguished teaching career, Dr. Popovich was a member of the American Chemical Society, the Phi Lambda Upsilon, Sigma XI and the West Virginia Academy of Sciences. He was elected to Mountain Honorary, received a Certificate of Merit for Distinguished Academic Services to the students of the College of Agriculture and Forestry, and received the Department and College Outstanding Teacher Awards for the 1977-1978 academic year.
In his 33 years as a teacher at WVU, he earned the respect of his students and colleagues. He was a long-time member and elder of the First Christian Church of Morgantown. After retirement he was on the organization committee for the Community Kitchen of Morgantown and served with his wife there for several years preparing meals for the homeless. In June 1998 he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary. He was an avid gardener, with a particular interest in the hybridization of daylilies.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Dorothea Janes Popovich; a daughter, Lynn and husband, Col. Jon Pearse, MD of Scott AFB, Ill.; two sons, Peter and wife, Ann Popovich of Warrenton, Va. and Dr. Keith and wife, Barbara Popovichof Butte, Mont.; nine grandchildren, Emily and Tim Pearse, Peter Andrew, Daniel, Stephen and Jordan of Warrenton, Va. and Nathaniel, Kathrine and Erin of Butte, Mont. and two sisters, Virginia Zaloudek and Dorothy Gould, both of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Susan McGhee officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will follow at 3 p.m. in Rosedale Cememtery in Martinsburg.

Rev. Clarence E. Ratcliff
WARSAW, Ind. -- Rev. Clarence Earl Ratcliff, 83, formerly of Hinton, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, in a Warsaw care home following a long illness.
Born July 22, 1915, in Smith Center, Kan., he was the son of the late Charles and Henrietta Alice Johnson Ratcliff.
Rev. Ratcliff was former pastor of the Mt. Olivet Church, where he was also the director of the camp, and was a member of the Christian Nation Church.
He was a former school psychologist for Jackson County Board of Education in Michigan, retiring in 1975. He was a graduate of Michigan State University with a master's degree in psychology.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Ratcliff; and an infant brother.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Lois Ann Harris Ratcliff of Warsaw, Ind.; a daughter, Ruth Brandt and her husband, Jim, of Bradenton, Fla.; two sons, Paul Ratcliff of Toccoa, Ga., and Donald Ratcliff and his wife, Brenda, of Toccoa, Ga.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, the Rev. Bob (Maxine) Boggs of Warsaw, Ind., Mrs. Paul (Blanche) Burnette of Turmon, Ohio, and Mrs. Don (Agnes) Ryan of Marion, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Elmo Alderman and the Rev. Bob Boggs officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park, Hinton.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral parlor.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Lee R. Scott
Lee Roy Scott, 69, of Crab Orchard, died at 3:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at home following a long illness.
Born July 10, 1929, at Glen White, he was the son of the late George Scott and Edith Starling Scott.
Mr. Scott was a retired coal miner from Slab Fork Coal Co. with over 38 years of service and was a member of UMWA and Hilltop Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy and U.S. Army World War II veteran and had been a resident of Crab Orchard all of his life.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Scott; a brother, Billy Gene Scott and a sister, Maxine Johnson.
Survivors include his wife of 47« years, Norma Dixon Scott; three sons, Jerry Lee Scott of Crab Orchard, Gary Scott and wife, Deborah of Stanaford and Ronald Scott and wife, Rhonda of Cocoa, Fla.; a brother, Reginald Scott and wife, Susie of Hawaii; a sister, Anna Henries of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, JL Scott II, Joshua Scott, Kelly Scott and Britteny Lynn Scott and one great-grandchild, Ashley Scott.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hilltop Baptist Church, Crab Orchard, with Pastor David Mayes officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Sophia-Midway VFW Post No. 4326.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.

ALDERSON -- Forrest H. Shelton, 82, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at his home following a long illness.

CALDWELL -- Roy C. Beaver, 66, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Anderson cemetery, Teaberry Road, near Ronceverte. There will be no visitation.

Martha Jane Brown
MEADOW BRIDGE -- Martha Jane Brown, 73, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999 at her home following a long illness.
Born July 26, 1925, at Hominy Falls, she was the daughter of the late Albin and Maude Thomas Hellems.
Mrs. Brown was a homemaker, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Marie Brown; and a brother, Robert Lee Hellems.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, the Rev. Huling Paris Brown; two daughters, Janet O'Dell and her husband, Douglas, of Elkton, Md., and Shelby Ennis and her husband, Jay, of Meadow Bridge; four grandsons, Randy and Jeffrey O'Dell, both of Elkton, Md., Jason and Jeremy Ennis, both of Meadow Bridge; a granddaughter, Natasha Ennis of Meadow Bridge; two great-granddaughters, Mandee and Amy O'Dell; two great-grandsons, J.D. and Sean O'Dell; three sisters, Opal Walton and Ruby Sears, both of Snow Hill, and Alta Bays of Cumming, Ga.; and two brothers, Harry Hellems of Snow Hill and Clell Hellems of Columbus, Ohio.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Smathers Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with the Revs. Charles Donaldson and Tom Shaver officiating. Burial will follow in the Spruce Grove cemetery, Mount Nebo.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Smathers Funeral Home, Rainelle.
Pallbearers will be Randy and Jeff O'Dell, Jason and Jeremy Ennis, Jim Frost and Bob Hellems.

Edna V. Claytor
Edna Virginia Claytor, 86, of Daniels, died at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.
Born Dec. 28, 1912, at Blue Jay, she was the daughter of the late Elijah Webb and Anne Campbell Webb.
Mrs. Claytor was a homemaker and former employee of the U.S. Postal Service at Daniels Post Office. She was a member of Daniels Missionary Baptist Church and had lived most of her life in the Daniels area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Claytor; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Habeck; and a brother, Glenn Webb.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Maloney of Fairfax, Va.; a sister, Hazel M. Richmond of Daniels and two grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Pastor Greg Mullis officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Myrtle E. Irvin
LAYLAND -- Myrtle E. Irvin, 74, of Chestnut Knob Road, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.
Born March 21, 1924, at Royal, she was the daughter of the late Flura B. and Sarah Smith.
Mrs. Irvin was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Smith and Stanley Smith.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Eldridge E. Irvin; two daughters, Barbara Avis and Brenda Kessler, both of Highland Mountain, Layland; three sons, Ellis Irvin of Rainelle, Arnold Irvin of Danese and Alfred Irvin of Layland; four sisters, Hester Adkins and Dorothy Grubb, both of Layland, June Pennington of Danese, and Patricia Adkins of Mount Hope; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnut Knob Christian Church, with the Rev. Bill Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith cemetery on Highland Mountain.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, and one hour before the services Thursday at the church.

James L. Lilly
James Lee Lilly, 77, of Crab Orchard, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at his home following a long illness.
Born Oct. 26, 1921, at Tamroy, he was the son of the late Ocal Doss and Lelona Gray Lilly.
Mr. Lilly was a retired master mechanic and worked for Curtis Candy in Chicago. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II and attended Glen View Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ocal R. Lilly; a brother, Lacy A. Lilly.
Mr. Lilly was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Arlene Adams Lilly; two sons, Harold E. Lilly and his wife, Mary, of Brementon, Wash., and James J. Lilly of Crab Orchard; a daughter, Barbara Lee Soalfield and her husband, Rod, of Kent, Wash.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. James Leach officiating. Burial will follow in BLue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Frazier, Troy Bailey, Tom Shupe, Elmer Drennen, Jordan Jones and Robert Williams.
