Jeannette S. Straton
Jeanette S. Straton, 74, of Beckley, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in a Memphis, Tenn., hospital following injuries received in a September 1998 car accident in Knoxville, Tenn.
Born April 16, 1924, at Charleston, she was the daughter of Judge Birk S. and Margaret Smith Stathers.
Mrs. Straton was a graduate of Duke University with a degree in economics and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and on the yearbook staff. She was very active in community organizations, including the Women's Club and the Garden Club and was also a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout leader. Her interests included golf, bridge, reading and gardening.
Survivors include two sons, Joe Straton and wife, Amelia, of Palo Alto, Calif., and Jack Straton and wife, Cindy, of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren, John W. III, Rebekah, Susannah, Wesley and Jack; and a brother, the Rev. Birk S. Stathers Jr.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Beckley. Gifts in her memory can be made to the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.

Virginia Ruth Akers
Virginia Ruth Akers, 68, of Myers Avenue, Beckley, died at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 1999 in a Charleston hospital.
Born April 16, 1930 at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Mike Campbell and Delores Cotter Campbell.
Mrs. Akers was co-owner and operator of the Family Trucking Business and was a former employee of Leggett's Department Store and Montgomery Wards. She was a 1949 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a member of St. Mary's United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Paul Akers; and a brother, James Pennington.
Survivors include a son, Michael Wayne Akers and his wife, Kim of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Toneta Akers-Toler and her husband, Acie of Beckley; three grandchildren, Holden Akers-Toler, Michael and Matthew Akers; and many other relatives and friends.
Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Pastor Jim Reed officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Chapel of Hope.
Friends may call 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Bill Hutchens, Rick Hutchens, Herbie Brooks, James Calderis, Kenny Hambric, and Brad Parquette. Larry Hickman as pallbearer.

Gwen W. Barbour
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Gwen Waddell Barbour, 81, formerly of Woodlawn Ave., Beckley, died Thursday, Feb. 11, in Columbia, following a short illness.
Memorial services will be today at St. Martins In the Fields Episcopal Church, Columbia, S.C.

GLENVILLE -- Maxine Keener Friend, 62, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Birch River Baptist Church, Birch River. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Waters Funeral Home Chapel, Summersville.

Enice L. Green
CLEARVILLE, Pa. -- Enice L. Green, 93, formerly of Beckley, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 in a Pennsylvania hospital following a long illness.
Born June 11, 1905 at Maymeed, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Emma Lewis.
Mrs. Green lived most of her life in Raleigh County, was a loving wife and homemaker and a member of Open Bible Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William T. "W.T." Green; a son, Jerry Green; two grandsons, David and Donald Ray Green; and a great-great-granddaughter, Jessica Simms.
Survivors include three sons, William Green and his wife, Wanda of Beckley, Paul Green and his wife, Mary Sue of Calhoun, Ga., Herbert Green of Taylor, Mich.; four daughters, Edna Cooper of Beckley, Mary Messersmith and her husband, Robert of Clearville, Pa., Wanda West and her husband, Bernard of Greenwood, Del., Brenda Wyant and her husband, Richard of Hagerstown, Md.; 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastors Harman Davis and Randy Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in Pemberton cemetery, Pemberton.
Friends may call 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Leitha B. `Gammie' Gwinn
RAINELLE -- Leitha B. "Gammie" Gwinn, 82, formerly of Meadow Bridge, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999 in a Fairlea hospital following a long illness.
Born July 16, 1916 at Clay, she was the daughter of the late Richard Russell and Nancy Media McCommas Moore.
Mrs. Gwinn was preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Fox and Juanita Moore; and three brothers, Dexter Moore, Berman Moore, and Chester Moore.
Survivors include her husband, Fred Virgil Gwinn; three daughters, Leitha Adkins and her husband, Herbert of Jacksonville, Fla., Lola Davis and her husband, Donald of Meadow Bridge, and Lilly Davis of Romney; a son, Richard Gwinn and his wife, Fran of Rockville, Md.; a sister, Lenore Sims of Danese; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Michael Whisman officiating. Burial will follow in Patton cemetery, Meadow Bridge. Burial will follow in Patton cemetery, Meadow Bridge.

Alfred D. Hutchinson
CATAWBA, S.C. -- Alfred D. Hutchinson, 73, formerly of Pineville, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, in a Charlotte, N.C., hospital following a long illness.
Born Sept. 1, 1925, at Keyrock, he was the son of the late Edward and Oatie Lambert Hutchinson.
Mr. Hutchinson was a retired equipment operator for the West Virginia Department of Highways.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, and two sisters.
Survivors include include his wife of 51 years, Hulda Elizabeth Hutchinson; a daughter, Betty Jean Lafferty of Catawba, S.C.; three sisters, Mabel Browning, Virginia Nunley, and Joyce Pendry; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.
Graveside services and burial will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, with the Rev. Bryce Phillips officiating.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Bessie Ann Jarrell
COLCORD -- Bessie Ann Jarrell, 102, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 in a Beckley care center following a long illness.
Born May 1, 1896 in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Carter and Flora Griffith Carter.
Mrs. Jarrell was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church, Dorothy.
She was preceded in death by three daughters, Flora Dillard, Juanita Hendrick, and Catherine Jarrell; and two sons, Emory Jarrell and James Jarrell; five brothers, Robert, Grant, Thomas, George, and Hobert Carter; and two sisters, Rosa Shamblin and Dessie Carter.
Survivors include a son, Irvin Jarrell of Chelyan; and two daughters, Jessie Stover and Beatrice Vanoy both of Colcord; 24 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Assembly of God Church, Dorothy, with the Revs. Gerald W. Pauley and Cecil McClellan officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview cemetery, Orgas.

Hallie C. Lemons
RONCEVERTE -- Hallie C. Lemons, 94, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 in a Ronceverte care center following a long illness.
Born Feb. 29, 1904 at Welch, she was the daughter of the late Ira Otis and Alice Switzer Cooke.
Mrs. Lemons was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Ronceverte, the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legions, and a member of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur P. Lemons; five sisters, Alice Walker, Dorthia Hall, Ira Cooke, Penelope Cooke, and Otis Watts; two brothers, Randolph Cooke and Teddy Cooke.
Survivors include a sister, Delilah Frazier of Winter Park, Fla.; two brothers, Woodrow Cooke and his wife, Ruth of Oceana and Keith Cooke and his wife, Mary K. of Charleston; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Ronceverte, with the Rev. Mark Flynn officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg.
Friends may call one hour before services Sunday at the funeral home.

Lois M. `Tillie' Robertson
DETROIT, Mich. -- Lois M. "Tillie" Robertson, formerly of Wyco and Beckley, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999 in Detroit.
Born at Lillybrook, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Caldwell and Minnie Reid Caldwell.
Mrs. Robertson was retired from Chrysler Corporation in Detroit and was a member of the Second Baptist Church, Beckley, and the United Auto Workers.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee F. Caldwell and James "Jakie" Caldwell.
Survivors include a son, Donald Elmore of Detroit, Mich.; two sisters, Ruby Webb of Detroit, Mich. and Viola Abrams and her husband, Henry of Beckley; three grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Faith Temple Deliverance Church, 119 Deegans St., with Elder Bob Tunstalle officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before services Sunday at the church.
