AUGUSTA, Ga. ­ George Thomas Filuta, 69, formerly of Frank, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Cass United Methodist Church. There will be no visitation.

Donations of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association of Augusta, 246 Davis Road, Augusta, GA 30907; or to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 3185 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA 30909.

Robert L. Johnson

LEXINGTON, Ky. ­ Robert L. Johnson, 74, retired president of Appalachian Regional Healthcare, Inc., and former vice president of both the University of Kentucky and the University of California, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donations of sympathy may be made to Dean's Scholarship Endowment Fund, UK College of Medicine, University of Kentucky Development Office, Sturgill Development Building, Lexington, KY 40506; Frontier Nursing Services, Wendover, KY 41775; Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504; or a philanthropy of choice.

Dorothy J. Ryan

UNION ­ Dorothy J. Ryan, 88, formerly of Beckley, died of natural causes Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, in a Lowmoore, Va., hospital.

Born Jan. 13, 1911, in Union, she was the daughter of the late Albert Sidney and Izzie McNeer Johnston.

Mrs. Ryan was a retired school teacher having taught at Eccles Elementary School for 30 years, a former member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Beckley, and a current member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Union. She was a member of the American Red Cross and was a 15-year resident of Union.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Ryan Sr.

Survivors include a son, Paul M. Ryan Jr. of Hayward, Wis.; two sisters, Mrs. J.R. McCoy and Elizabeth Donvan, both of Union; a granddaughter, Kelly Patricia Ryan of Minneapolis, Minn.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the All Saints Episcopal Church, Union, with the Rev. Linwood Wells officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, and one hour before the services Thursday at All Saints Episcopal Church, Union.

Pallbearers will be Bill Hancock, Bill Martin, Ronald Ripley, Jonathan Rice, Marion Shiflett and Ralph Mann.

Donations of sympathy may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, Union.

Gerald Edward Sears, 61, of Beckley, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Mary O. Tarr

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. ­ Mary O. Tarr, 83, formerly of Beckley, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, in a Morristown hospital following a long illness.

Born Jan. 26, 1916, in Christiansburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Howard C. and Margie Bradford Yearout.

Mrs. Tarr had lived most of her life in Beckley. She was a homemaker and member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church, Mabscott.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John A. Parks; her second husband, William H. Tarr; and a son, Gary Parks.

Survivors include three daughters, Margie Rose of Cleveland, Ohio, Elaine Amundson of Fredericksburg, Va., and Betty Dilly of Morristown, Tenn., with whom she made her home; four sons, John Parks of Cleveland, Ohio, Bill Frey of Beckley, and Michael and Curtis Tarr, both of Fredericksburg, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Wallace Yearout of Beckley; and two sisters, Barbara Buckland of Alamance, N.C., and Ida Mae Price of Jacksonville, Fla.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wed-nesday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Jim Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park cemetery, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mildred K. Thompson

COMFORT ­ Mildred Karnes Thompson, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wed-nesday at Valley Funeral Home, Whitesville. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Shelton C. Trail

PIPESTEM ­ Shelton Clifton Trail, 80, of the Oruy Meadows Road, passed peacefully with his family surrounding him at his home early Monday morning, Oct. 4, 1999.

Born April 27, 1919, in True, he was the son of the late Shelton Watt and Vivian Pearl Lane Trail.

Mr. Trail had served with the U.S. Army during World War II having received the American Theater Services Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was a retired employee for the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, at Pipestem State Park, having retired in 1981 from the Conservation Division at the park.

He was a former lay speaker for the United Methodist Church and an ordained minister, having served several area churches in Summers and Mercer counties.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Marie Wyrick Trail; three sisters, Ora Holbart, Helen Bragg and Ina Holland; and a stepbrother, Sherman Duncan.

Survivors include a son, Shelton W. Trail and his wife, Susie Mae, of Pipestem; a grandson, Shelton Matthew Trail of the home; three sisters, Zinna Lilly of Pipestem, Ardith Meadows of Akron, Ohio, and Zelma Jarrard of Dahlonega, Ga.; a stepsister, Nancy; and a stepbrother, Junior Duncan of True.

Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Burns-Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory, on the Athens Road, Princeton, with the Rev. Randy Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in the Rocky Mount cemetery, Pipestem.

Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the Sandy River District, American Legion Post 175 of Bradshaw and the Mercer Council Veterans Council.

Brinnie Sherman Workman, 86, of Clear Creek, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

SUMMERSVILLE ­ Henry Ralph Brown, 78, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999.

Graveside services were Thursday at Fairview cemetery, Nettie.

Michael W. Bryant

LOOKOUT ­ Michael Weldon Bryant, 24, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999.

The body was cremated.

Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the home of his parents, Charles and Deborah Bryant of Lookout.

Stella F. Carter

GLEN FORK ­ Stella F. Brinegar Carter, 83, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born March 27, 1916, in Pineville, she was the daughter of the late James Leffie Brinegar and Sarah "Sallie" Farley Brinegar.

Mrs. Carter was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland "Bud" Carter; three sons, Roger, Buddy and Roy Carter; four brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include three sons, Danny Carter and his wife, Darlene, Bill Carter and Eddie Carter, all of Glen Fork; five daughters, Bobbie Perry and her husband, Billy, of Cyclone, Janice Jessie and her husband, Everett, of Bud, Dorothy Brooks and her husband, Ronald, of Glen Rogers, Carol Mudgett and her husband, Gordon, of Moab, Utah, and Helen Workman of Lester; a sister, Mary Brinegar of Pineville; 32 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Evans Funeral Home Chapel, Oceana, with the Revs. Mickey Mitchell and Firg Proffitt officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may call 6 to 10 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Nettie V. Dancy

MIAMISBURG, Ohio ­ Nettie V. Dancy, 69, formerly of Glen Daniel, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Miami Valley Hospital.

Born Aug. 18, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Amy E. Milam.

Mrs. Dancy was a member of First Baptist Church, Germantown.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Carl Dancy; two daughters, Ellen Huddleston and her husband, Bruce, and Sharon Kay Gambill, all of Carlisle, Ohio; three sons, Carl W. Dancy of Miamisburg, William Bradley Dancy and his wife, Shirley, of Troy, Ohio, and Kevin B. Dancy of Springfield, Ohio; five grandchildren, Heather Colleen Dancy of Centerville, Ohio, Ashley Rebecca Dancy of Troy, Amanda Nicole Dancy of Miamisburg and Matthew Warren and Samantha Lynn Huddleston, both of Carlisle; two sisters, Arlene Elkins and Mildred Fink, both of West Virginia; two brothers, Roy Milam of West Virginia and Delmar Milam of North Carolina; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Services were Friday at Dalton Funeral Home, Germantown, with Pastor Ted Ricci officiating. Burial followed in Germantown cemetery.
