Dorothy M. Clark

Dorothy M. Parsons McDade Clark, 85, of Leon died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at home following a long illness.

She attended Pine Grove Church, Leon, and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Jemima Thornton Parsons; husbands, George L. McDade (1954) and Allen Clark (1974), brothers, Clyde, Charles, Virgle, Elmer, Everett, and Paul; sisters, Lucy Pearson and two baby sisters.

Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Vonda Lee and Dan Cottrell of Athens, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, William Lee and Kathy McDade of Leon; sister, Macy R. Cross of Findley, Ohio; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Service was held Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Phillip Walker officiating. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Leon.

Johnathon Higginbotham

Johnathon D. Higginbotham, 17, of Pliny died June 3, 2004, from injuries received in a automobile accident.

Johnathon was a junior at Buffalo High School and a member of the boys basketball team.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Herman Otho and Geraldine Higginbotham.

Surviving: mother and her fiancee, Vallery Higginbotham and Jim Withrow of Winfield; father and stepmother, John and Vanessa Higginbotham of Pliny; maternal grandparents, Emanuel and Betty Wears of Apple Grove; stepgrandparents, Hillis and Dorothy Riddle of Eleanor; sister, Leandra Higginbotham of Eleanor; niece, Alisa Jane and nephew Chazz Dylan Grady, both of Eleanor; stepbrother, Nathaniel Arthur of Milton; stepsister, Tia Arthur of Pliny; aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of family and friends.

Service was held Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Buffalo High School with the Rev. Marlin Campbell and Coach Chuck Elkins officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to the Buffalo High School Basketball Team, 3317 Buffalo Road, Buffalo WV 25033.

Jeannetta Frost

Jeannetta Frost, 76, of Buffalo, formerly of Cincinnati, died June 4, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital following a short illness.

She attended the Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving: daughters, Judie Kula of Atlanta, Georgia, Jacqueline Rowe of Galax, Virginia, Joanne Austin of Guyton, Ohio, and Joyce Roger of Buffalo; brothers, Paul Frost of Ohio and John Frost of Jacksonville, Florida; sister, Sue McFarland of Ohio; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was held at Arlington Memorial Gardens, Cincinnati, with Pastor Tim Day officiating. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Opal Lovejoy

Opal Qualls Lovejoy, 86, of Scott Depot, died June 4, 2004, after a short illness.

She was born January 6, 1918 at Milton, the daughter of the late James Monroe and Luvena Honaker Qualls. She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Baptist Temple, and loved helping needy families on occasions of the year.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Lovejoy, a daughter, Lois Ann Lovejoy, and several brothers and sisters.

Surviving: daughter, Cheryl Lynn Halstead and her husband, Lloyd, of Poca; four step-grandchildren.

Service was held Monday, June 7, 2004, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. David Pence officiating. Burial was in Milton Cemetery, Milton.

Verna Mae Cremeans

Verna Mae Cremeans, 88, of Barboursville, passed away Friday, June 4, 2004. Funeral services were conducted at 1 pm Sunday, June 6, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, by the Rev. David Cardwell. Burial in Lucian Adkins Cemetery. She was born January 31, 1916, in Lincoln County, a daughter of the late Lucian and Leatha Porter Adkins. She was a member of Salem United Baptist Church She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Cremeans; one grandson, Terry Dale Cremeans and one great-granddaughter, Brittany Cremeans. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and John White , Debbe and John Williamson, all of Barboursville, two sons and daughters-in-law, Eldon Dale and Linda Cremeans of Florida, Willis Darrell and Elaine Cremeans of Ohio; three sisters, Mabel Daniels of Branchland, Warnella Jones of California, and Neva Gibson of Barboursville; two brothers, Cormel Adkins and Raymond Adkins, both of Branchland; eleven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Argyle Arlyn Walker

Argyle Arlyn Walker, 69, of Huntington died Friday St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were held 2 p.m.. Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Henson Mortuary, Barboursville, Pastor Bill Davis and Pastor Dan Beaver officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born October 23, 1934, in Huntington, son of the late Elmer D. and Dora Young Walker. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Walker. Mr. Walker retired from INCO in the welding products department. He was also a member of-the Quarter Century Club at INCO and BPOE #313. Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn Wooten Walker; children Randy and his wife Mickey Walker of Huntington, Jeannine and her husband Allen Perry of Proctorville, Ohio, and Chuck and his wife Nancy Walker of Huntington; also five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.. Charles Edward Meadows, Sr.

Charles Edward Meadows, Sr., 78, known as Charlie, Dad, PaPa, Grandpa and Pop, grew his wings and flew to be with God, Thursday, June 3, 2004. He was born Jan. 28,1926, in Cabell County, a son of the late Pete Meadow Sr. and Anna Marie Cremeans Meadows. Over the years past, he was a hands-on father and wore many hats from PTO and band booster president to baseball and soccer coach.

Throughout his life, Charlie was known for his eloquence with words and his ability to comfort and bring happiness to those around him. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps serving in World War II, and he attended Michigan State University. He awarded a “favorite educator” award by West Virginia University and the Department of Education. He was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He retired from Huntington Alloys after 34 years of dedicated service. He continued on to be a full-time husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his adoring family. He will forever be remembered as a brilliant and gentle man, an inspired writer, a teacher, a gardener of children and a music lover, he was the leader of the band.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 58 years, Patricia Ann Stewart Meadows, along with seven children; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with an additional two expected in June. His surviving children are Charles Edward Jr. and Bebe Meadows of Huntington, George and Shin Chang Meadows of Fredericksburg, Va, Ann and Ralph Hensley of Ashland, Ky., Chan Vass of Huntington, Chris and Becky Meadows of Milton, Mary and Tommy Smirl of Huntington and Michael Meadows of Huntington. His surviving grandchildren are Charles Edward III, Christiaan, Mary Jill, Kathleen, Rob and Joseph Meadows, Kai and Minh Poh, Sam and Katey Hensley, Kyle Vass, Zach, Dane, Torie and Tessa Meadows and Sydnee, Teylor and Rileigh Smirl. Surviving great-grandchildren are Jed, Avery and Ainsley Meadows and Haiti and Elijah Meadows. He is also survived by four brothers, Paul Meadows of Canton, Ohio, Pete Meadows Jr. and Richard Meadows, both of Huntington, and Marion Meadows of Ona.

He has passed on his brilliant mind and creativity to three generations of Meadows children and instilled in each one a love of music and books. An account of his life can hardly convey the effect that Charlie Meadows has had on the lives of those who love him. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. The funeral mass was held at 1 pm Monday at Our Lady of Fatima, Norway Avenue, Huntington by Monsignor Lawrence Luciana. Burial in Woodmere, Memorial Park. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Harlis E. Bates

Harlis E. Bates, 78, of Howell, Mich., died Friday, June 4, 2004. He was born Sept. 16, 1925, in Barboursville, W.Va., to Andrew J. and Ethel Hates. He married Betty Cremeans in Barboursville on Jan. 31, 1948. He worked for Ford Motor Co., Livonia, Mich., and was a member of the Moose Lodge, Huntington. He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, David; daughter, Meg (Ken) Dreher; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ron, Cecil and Melvin; .and five sisters, Iva Shafer, Garnet Blake, Esther Perry, Sue Bates and Carolyn Murphy, all of Barboursville. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bud and Hershel and a sister, Wilma. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Dillingham Liverance Niblack Funeral Home, Fowlerville, Mich.

Venus Rappold Blake

Venus Rappold Blake, 94, of Culloden, widow of John Blake, died Sunday at home. Survivors include one son, John E. Blake of Middleport, Ohio; daughters, Jeannine Broyles, Doris Blake and Donna Blake, all of Culloden, Geneva Blake of Denver and Betty Bias of Richmond, Va.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren Funeral 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 2nd, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane; burial in Valley View Memorial Park Hurricane.

Wanda Gene Turley Platt Burhans

Wanda Gene Turley Platt Burhans, 81, of Chandler, Ariz., died Feb. 14, 2004. The family held a private service. She was born Sept. 18, 1922, the daughter of the late Basil and Garnette Baumgardner Turley of Ona. She graduated from Milton High School and Marshall College, and taught at Sharples High School. Gene served in the Navy (WAVES) during World War II. She received her Master's Degree from the University of Arizona, then taught at the junior high and high school in Coolidge, Ariz., for 20 years. She married William Platt and had four children who survive: twin sons, Richard Platt of Coolidge and James Stuart of Carlsbad, Calif.; two daughters, Teresa Platt of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Lucy Sullivan of Flagstaff, Ariz; Three grandchildren also survive: Chris Platt, John Sullivan, Jr., and Paige Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her second husband, John Burhans, and a granddaughter, Lauren Platt (automobile accident). Memorial contributions may be made to: Lauren Platt Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Coolidge Scholarships, Inc., 221 W. Central Ave., Coolidge, AZ, 85228.

Jean L. Miller

Mrs. Jean L. Miller, 61, of Poca died May 24, 2004, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

She was retired from Exxon, a 1960 graduate of Poca High School, and attended Rock Branch Independent Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Melvin Leach, and brother, Paul Melvin Leach.

Surviving: daughter, Jaime Paulynn Rogers and husband, John, of Nitro; mother, Mrs. Winifred Arbutus “Sis” Leach of Poca; sisters, Nancy Casto of Poca and Mary Lou Coth of Middleburg, Florida.

Service was held Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with Pastor Delbert L. Hawley officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

John B. Moore

John B. Moore, 87, of Hurricane, formerly of South Charleston and Clearwater, Florida, died May 26, 2004 at Broadmore Assisted Living following a short illness.

Born October 14, 1916 in Gassaway, he was the son of the late Frederick S. and Edna Gumm Moore. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Maysel L. Bright Moore, brothers, Guy, Roy and William “Bill” Moore, and sisters, Irene Gerwig and Florence Beall.

He was a retired operations foreman from Union Carbide Corporation with 37 years of service. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Spring Hill. He served during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division.

Surviving: daughters, Kay Goetz and husband, John, of Hurricane, Sheri Ludlam and husband, Roger, of Leesburg, Virginia; brother, Fred Moore of Maple Heights, Ohio; grandchildren, John, Todd and Brad Ludlam, Scott and Kristin Goetz; seven great-grandchildren.

Service was held Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. William R. Thomas officiating.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Venus Blake

Venus Blake, 94, of Culloden, widow of John Blake, died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at home. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane; burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Sarah Ann Templeton

Sarah Ann Templeton, 86, of Milton went home to with the Lord Saturday, May 29, 2004. Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, with the Rev. Jim Franklin officiating. She was born Sept. 16, 1917, in Milton, a daughter of the late Stonewall and Julia Legg Clagg. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Lou Templeton. Sarah attended Lower Creek Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Jessie Clyde Templeton; two sons and daughter-in-law, Phillip Templeton and Robert Templeton and his wife Jill; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Etta Taylor Campbell

Mary Etta Taylor Campbell, 75, of Culloden, W.Va., passed away on May 28, 2004, in the presence of our Lord after a long illness. She was born May 25, 1929, in Waden, W.Va., a daughter of the late Ernie and Pearly Hayes Taylor. She was a devoted wife, a loving mom and grandmother and attended Grace Baptist Temple. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George and James Taylor; three sisters, Madeleine Kinison, Phyllis Krosky and Vinna Taylor; one grandchild, Timothy Moody, and one great-grandchild, Kylie Raymond. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and David Goff of Myra, W.Va., Dinah and Vernon Larrabee of St. Albans, W.Va., Pam and Lacy Spry of Myra and Lynn and Charles Grass of Ona; two sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Sharon Hager of Fostoria, Ohio, and Steve and Jean Hager of Teays Valley, W.Va.; 23 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 31, 2004, at Bethel Baptist Church, Sias, W.Va., with Lacy Spry Sr. officiating. Burial in Collins Cemetery on Campbell Creek, Tad, W.Va. Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin, W.Va., was in charge of arrangements.

Ellen (Tooley) Swieton

Ellen (Tooley) Swieton, 67 of Huntington, W.Va. formerly of Round Lake Beach, Ill., passed away May 26, 2004. She was born June 12, 1936, in Lincoln County, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Emma Adkins Tooley. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Swieton; eight children, Lynn (Cooke) Tomblin, John (Gaby) Cook, Vicki (Cooke) Kennedy (Todd), Kenny (Diana) Swieton, Linda Swieton, Diane (Steve) Tomasello, Charlie (Kim) Swieton, Joe (Joyce) Swieton; one brother and sister-in-law, Ira Gene an Donna Tooley. She will be greatly missed by 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who brought much joy to her life. She also leaves behind her best friend Jane Hurt. Memorial Services were conducted at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, by Pastor Cothea Workman. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Justen's Round Lake Funeral Home, Round Lake, IL, by Rev. Lisle Kauffman. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington, Box 464, Huntington, WV 25709.

Thelma J. Clark

Thelma J. Clark, 80, of Culloden, widow of Harley A. Clark, died Wednesday, May 27, 2004 at home. She was a homemaker. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane; burial in Culloden Cemetery.

Rebecca Lynn Thacker

Rebecca Lynn Thacker, 51, of Culloden, wife of Harold Thacker, died Tuesday at home. Graveside services 2 p.m. Friday, Forest Memorial Park Milton. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.. Contributions may be made to the family.
