DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - Sylvia Simon Miller Harris, 72, formerly of Beckley, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Boca Raton, following a short illness.
Born Jan. 5, 1928, in New Brighton, Pa., she was the daughter of Julius and Dora Simon.
Mrs. Harris was a 1945 graduate of New Brighton High School. She was a member of Temple Beth-El of Beckley and had been an employee of the Raleigh County National Bank in Beckley for 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph R. Miller, formerly of Beckley, and a brother, Abe Simon, formerly of Beverly Hills, Calif.
Survivors include her second husband, Milton Harris; two sons, Jeffrey Miller of New Port Richey, Fla., and Dennis Miller of Oxford, N.C.; a brother, Saul Simon of Delray Beach; and a sister, Eve Zaremberg Roth of Pittsburgh.
Services were Monday, Feb. 7, at Eternal Light cemetery in Boynton Beach, Fla.

James 'Pat' Houchins
RAINELLE - James R. "Pat" Houchins, 87, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at his home following a short illness.
Born April 26, 1911, at Dawson, he was the son of the late Charlie and Nancy Bennett Houchins.
Mr. Houchins was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rainelle and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired contractor painter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Cover Houchins; six brothers, Phillip, Dawson, Bill, Jim, Tom and John; and a sister, Margaret Bostic.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie Smith and her husband, Jim, of Crosby, Texas, and Darlis Hyma of South Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren, Lori Berry of North Augusta, S.C., Kelly Livingston of Humble, Texas, Andrea Huijgens of Kingwood, Texas, Todd Hyma of South Houston, Texas, Gregg Hyma of Pasadena, Texas, Patti Darby of Richmond, Texas, and Sean Hyma of South Houston, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Luc Huijgens, Elizabeth Livingston, Kelli Hyma and Erin Hyma, all of Texas.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smathers Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Dana Gatewood and Keith Shumaker officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Caldwell.

James F. Kingdon
RALEIGH, N.C. - James Frederick Kingdon, 41, formerly of Mullens, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, in a Hospice Care Center in Greensboro, N.C., following a short illness of Lou Gehrig's disease.
Born Feb. 11, 1958, at Bluefield, he was the son of Frederick and Beulah McKinney Kingdon of Mullens.
Mr. Kingdon grew up in Mullens and was a 1976 graduate of Mullens High School. He was a graduate of Concord College with a degree in business administration. He was employed by Vanstar in Raleigh, N.C., as a computer network engineer.
He moved to Florida and later to Dallas, Texas; while there he met and married Luann Ruffino Kingdon, who was a school teacher from New York.
Other survivors, besides his parents and wife, include a son, Michael James Kingdon, who is 6 years old, at home; a sister, Patty Kay Dunn; his mother-in-law, Jeanette B. Andriella; aunts and uncles, Mrs. A.R. Kingdon of Mullens, Mrs. Watson Mays of Bluefield, Mrs. Dick Frampton of Charleston, Mr. and Mrs. Watt Shields of Virginia Beach, Va., Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lowe of Ashland, Ky., Mr. and Mrs. Russell McKinney of Greensboro, N.C., and a host of cousins.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Mullens, with the Rev. Philip W. Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Monte Vista Park cemetery, Bluefield.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Tankersley Funeral Home, Mullens.

Oliver K. Lawson
FAYETTEVILLE - Oliver Kenneth Lawson, 82, formerly of Sandyville, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at his residence following a short illness.
Born Feb. 28, 1917, at Sandyville, he was a son of the late Fred Lawson and Oma Hurd.
Mr. Lawson was a retired truck driver and meter man for Columbia Carbon and Cities Service Gas Co. with 42 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, was of the Baptist faith and had been a consistent farmer all his life.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Delbert Lawson; and a sister, Ruth Waggoner.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary L. Persinger McCurdy of Fayetteville; a granddaughter, Olivia Mae McCurdy of Fayetteville; a brother, Charles "Chuck" Lawson of Ravenswood; a sister-in-law, Blanch Lawson of Sandyville; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Jerry Bush officiating. Entombment will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

LAFAYETTE, Va. - Emmett Joseph Martin, 87, formerly of Summers County, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in Meadowbrook Nursing Home, at Shawsville, Va., following a short illness.
Born Jan. 22, 1913, at Bertha, he was a son of the late Arthur and Bessie Elma Mitchell Martin and had lived most of his life in Virginia.
Mr. Martin was retired from E.F. Nichols Trucking Co., as a foreman/mechanic following 30 years of service. He was also certified in air conditioning and refrigeration.
He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorine Mann Martin; second wife, Belvia Ann Martin; two brothers, Howard T. and Claude C. Martin.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Martin and wife Rena and John Alex Martin and wife Judith; four daughters, Donna Richards and husband John, Patty Ryan and husband John, Linda Faye Kilbourne and husband Bobby, and Melinda K. "Katie" Martin; a brother, Jim Martin and wife Chick of Talcott; two sisters, Mrs. Glendora Jones of Forest Hill and Mrs. Gladys Meadows of Hinton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - Nicholas Paul McClure, 5 months old, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in a Richmond, Va., hospital.
Born Aug. 26, 1999, in Charlottesville, Va., he was the son of Richard and Sherri Zutaut McClure of Midlothian, Va.
Other survivors include two brothers, Phillip and Joshua, both of Midlothian; his maternal grandparents, Becky and Paul Zutaut of Oak Grove; paternal grandparents, Isabel and Wayne McClure of Crab Orchard; great-grandmothers, Chippie Ferguson of Oak Grove and Ida McClure of Crab Orchard; great-grandfather, Adam Zutaut of Beckley; aunt and uncle, Stephanie and Keith Shaffer of Monterey, Calif., and cousin, Hannah, of Monterey; an aunt, Pam Copenhaven and cousins, Michelle and Michael, of Atlanta, Ga.; an uncle, David McClure, and cousin, Jessica, of Canton, Ga.

OAK HILL - Mary Evelyn Persinger, 81, of 4003 Rogers St., died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in a Beckley hospital.
Born Sept. 2, 1918, at Fairmont, she was the daughter of the late Luther Henry Pennington and Letha Houchins.
Mrs. Persinger was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Carlton Persinger; children, Alfred, Richard, Harold and David Persinger, and Loretta Myles; three brothers, Luther, Harold and Virgil Pennington; and three sisters, Geraldine Carver, Inez Neff and Ann Cash.
Survivors include five daughters, Ruth Freeman of Doublin, Ga., Nora Dooley of Oak Hill, Connie Edwards of Oak Hill, Barbara Lavender of Oak Hill and Millisa Massey of Oak Hill; a son, James Persinger of Oak Hill; three sisters, Mary Irene Kincaid of Lansing, Pearl Nyla Channey of Marcushook, Pa., and Rose Woodrum of Princeton; 29 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Richard Kenzie Romans, 42, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000.
Born March 20, 1957, at Charmco, he was the son of Kenzie Sheets and Audrey Good Romans.
Mr. Romans was a technician for J.A. Jones and did work for North Carolina State Centennial Campus.
Other survivors include his wife, Jami Romans; five sisters, Brenda Jones of Silver Spring, Md., Marilynji Cumby of West Virginia, Annette Pataki of Silver Springs, Md., Gracie Anderson of Stanton, Va., and Cynthia Rogers Romans of Zebulon, N.C.; and three nieces, Melissa Jones, Heather Rogers and Loren Rogers.

Frank Spangler Sr.
FAYETTEVILLE - Frank "Daddy Frank" Spangler Sr., 82, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at his home following a short illness.
Born Sept. 2, 1917, in Otey, Va., he was a son of the late Gilbert Bunyon Spangler and Barbara Spence Spangler.
Mr. Spangler was a retired salesman. He worked for Kipling Shoe Co. and Tri-State Wholesale.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, Fayetteville. He was a charter member of American Legion Post No. 149 in Fayetteville and a 50-year member of Fayetteville Masonic Lodge No. 157.
Mr. Spangler was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Spangler and Silas Spangler; and a sister, Marie Huddleston.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Frances Amick Spangler; three sons, Frank S. Spangler Jr. and his wife, Betty Grace, of Fayetteville, Keith A. Spangler and his wife, Patricia, of Beckwith, and Larry W. Spangler and his wife, Bev, of Fayetteville; two daughters, Barbara S. Astuto of New Hampton, N.Y., and Laura F. O'Neal and her husband, Leland, of Fayetteville; a brother, Harry Spangler of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Grace Shockey of Buchannon and Anna Dean Davis of Mansfield, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Tammi Pittman, Whitney Finch and Jim O'Neal; and two great-great-grandchildren, Willie Spangler and Cassie Spangler.
