John H. Scott

EVANS, Ga. - John Howard Scott, 63, formerly of Oak Hill, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, in Kentwood Nursing Home, Evans, following a long illness.

Born June 24, 1936, in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late John and Verna Sue Amole Scott.

Mr. Scott was a journalism graduate of Northwestern Unviersity. He received a master's degree in elementary education from American University and did additional graduate work in education at the University of Virginia and George Mason University.

He was a reporter at The Washington Post for a year before becoming a teacher.

Mr. Scott began his education career in Fairfax County, Va., Cedar Lane Elementary, in 1959 and later was assistant principal at Kings Glen Elementary and principal of Little Run Elementary. He helped pioneer the county's gifted and talented program for elementary students. When he retired in 1989 he was coordinator of special projects for Fairfax County elementary schools.

He served as president of the Fairfax Association of Elementary School Principals and was its executive director after he retired. He was also president of the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals and a member of its national parent organization. He was newsletter editor of the Fairfax chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa educational society and a member of Fairlington United Methodist Church, Alexandria, Va.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Margaret Louise Maynard Scott; a son, Richard S. Scott of Augusta, Ga.; a daughter, Ellen Susanne Slater of Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Scott Slaters, Jamie Clark Slater, Zachary James Slater and Aubry Jean Scott; and a great-granddaughter, Imalai Slater.

Nolia M. Alkire

RICHWOOD - Nolia Marie Alkire, 78, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood. Friends may call noon until time of the services today at the funeral home.

James E. Belcher

CLEVELAND, Ohio - James E. Belcher, 64, formerly of Beckley, was dead on arrival, Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in a Cleveland hospital.

Hobert P. Bowles

RAINELLE - Hobert P. Bowles, 74, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, following a long illness.

Born Oct. 4, 1925, at Ramp, he was the son of the late Walter Waymon and Martha Ann Bowles.

Mr. Bowles was a retired coal miner and was a U.S. Army verteran, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Brookman; a granddaughter, Angela Turner; two great-grandchildren, Candace and Patrick Turner; six brothers; and four sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie Turner and her husband, John, of Rainelle, and Kathy Cochran and her husband, Bill, of Peterstown; three sons, Donnie Bowles and his wife, Cindy, of Belle, Timothy Bowles and his wife, Melody, of Narrows, Va., and Lester Bowles of Laurel, Md.; two sisters, Elsie Withrow of Oak Hill and Edith Tolliver of Maple Fork; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Smathers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Gum officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Smathers Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Michael Bowles, Timmy White, Stuart Dameron, Danny Sanford, Andy Hanson and Mike Tincher.

Mamie M. Bragg

MOUNT NEBO - Mamie Marie Bragg, 76, of Nicholas County, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Born July 8, 1923, at Hominy Falls, she was the daughter of the late Ira H. and Osie Backus Sebert.

Mrs. Bragg was a lifelong resident of Mount Nebo; she was of the Methodist faith and was formerly employed by the Nicholas County Board of Education, Green Thumb Senior Citizens and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rush Johnson Bragg, Jan. 3, 1977; a son, Ronald Bragg; and two brothers, Walter Sebert and Elvin Sebert.

Survivors include three daughters, Eileen Bragg Worley of Beckley, Arlene Bragg Brannon and her husband, Tom, of Louisville, Ky., and Marsha Bragg of Mount Nebo; a son, Glen Bragg of Mount Nebo; a granddaughter, Amy Brannon Farinas and her husband, Pete, of Louisville, Ky.; a grandson, Chris Brannon of Louisville, Ky.; two great-grandsons, Nathan Farinas and Andrew Farinas, both of Louisville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Doug Beam officiating. Burial will follow in the Hickory Grove cemetery, Mount Nebo.

Friends may call one hour before the services Saturday at the funeral home.

Wayne Cozart

NEBO - Wayne Cozart, 88, formerly of Minden, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Braxton County Memorial Hospital following a long illness.

Born Feb. 28, 1912, at Glen Rogers, he was the son of the late Samuel Cozart and Ida Snuffer.

Mr. Cozart was a coal miner, a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II, and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mollie Jane Cozart; and four brothers, Quincy, Cleve, Carlos and Riece Cozart.

Survivors include three daughters, Doris Dickens and husband, Paul, of Nebo, Shirley Tanner and husband, Arnold, of Duck, and Violet Edwards of Murphys, Calif.; a sister, Orpha Lafferty of Fairdale; a brother, Eugene Cozart of Beckley; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Bill Menefee officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Tyler E. Crawford

Tyler Eugene Crawford, infant son of Timmy and Shauna Honaker Crawford of Arnett, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Bob Crawford.

Other survivors include his half sister, Ronica Williams of Beckley; his grandparents, Robbie and Donna Clendenin Crawford of Stickney, Joretta White of Crab Orchard, Cernon Honaker of Arnett; great-grandparents, Alfred and Joy Clendenin of Rock Creek, Anna Crawford of Apoka, Fla., Joe R. Wills and Lou V. Honaker, both of Arnett; one aunt; and five uncles.

Graveside services and burial will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Clendenin-Persinger cemetery, Rock Creek, with the Rev. J.D. Pettry officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Louisa M. Farley

Louisa "Maude" Farley, 84, of Cool Ridge, died 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born March 9, 1915, at Ellison Ridge, she was the daughter of the late James Farley and Ada Bolen Farley.

Mrs. Farley was a homemaker, a member of the Cool Ridge Freewill Baptist Church, and a lifelong resident of the Cool Ridge area.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jason Farley and Ricky Bragg; two brothers, Ezra and Robert Thomas Farley, and four infant brothers; and a sister, Vennie Hatcher.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Ora Farley, who died March 1, 2000; five sons, Lemuel Farley and wife, Jean, of Appling, Ga., Leslie Farley and wife, Lola, of China Grove, N.C., Alvin McRay Farley and wife, Betty, of Cool Ridge, Chester Farley and wife, Brenda, of Fairdale, and Kenneth Farley and wife, Gale, of Saulsville; five daughters, Melva Cales and husband, Eddie, of Dimwittie, Va., Nadine Bragg and husband, Pat, of Cool Ridge, Pauline Lilly of Cool Ridge, Thelma Simon and husband, Ray, of China Grove, N.C., and Linda Nixon and husband, Eli, of Cool Ridge; two brothers, Clifford Farley of Cool Ridge and Ray Farley of Batavia, Ohio; four sisters, Ora Brammer of Advance, N.C., Edna Farley of Cool Ridge, Ivory Farley of Oak Hill, and Della Lively of Eccles; 30 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren.

Joint services will be 1 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, with the Rev. George Speck and Pastor Roger Pauley officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends called 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Ora C. Farley

Ora C. Farley, 89, of Cool Ridge, died 9:15 a.m., Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following an apparent heart attack.

Born Aug. 10, 1910, at Ellison Ridge, he was the son of the late Josiah Farley and Evelyn Lilly Farley.

Mr. Farley was a retired farmer and timberman. He was a member of the Cool Ridge Freewill Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of the Cool Ridge area.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Louisa Farley, Feb. 29, 2000; two sisters, Lemma Lilly and Glennis Smith, and an infant sister, Lennie Farley; a brother, Charles Farley; and two grandchildren, Jason Farley and Ricky Bragg.

Survivors include five sons, Lemuel Farley and wife, Jean, of Appling, Ga., Leslie Farley and wife, Lola, of China Grove, N.C., Alvin McRay Farley and wife, Betty, of Cool Ridge, Chester Farley and wife, Brenda, of Fairdale, and Kenneth Farley and wife, Gale, of Saulsville; five daughters, Melva Cales and husband, Eddie, of Dimwittie, Va., Nadine Bragg and husband, Pat, of Cool Ridge, Pauline Lilly of Cool Ridge, Thelma Simon and husband, Ray, of China Grove, N.C., and Linda Nixon and husband, Eli, of Cool Ridge; four brothers, Lake Farley and Eldon Farley, both of Cool Ridge, Ernest Farley of Chester, Va., and Ermerson Farley of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Zenna Jones of Cool Ridge and Shirley Mills of Catlettsburg, Ky.; 30 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
