Gary P. Mitchem

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Gary Paul Mitchem, 44, formerly of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord at 1:50 a.m. Sunday, May 7, 2000, in a Charlotte hospital following a long illness.

Born June 1, 1955, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Paul Clinton Mitchem and Shirley Jean Lowery Mitchem.

Mr. Mitchem moved in 1984 to Charlotte, where he worked in the glass industry as an installer. He was an accomplished musician, artist, beloved father, brother and friend.

He attended Evangel Temple Assembly of God, Charlotte.

Survivors include three sons, Jason Bryant, Justin and Elijah Paul; two daughters, Kelly Beth and Emma Jean; a sister, Linda Gayle Mitchem Cook of Charlotte, formerly of Beckley; two brothers, Timothy Mark Mitchem of Charlotte, formerly of Beckley, and Gregory Neil Mitchem of Iron Station, N.C., formerly of Beckley; three nephews; and three nieces.

He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

A celebration of his life will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Grandview National Park.

A memorial service will be 6:30 p.m. today at Evangel Temple Assembly of God, Charlotte.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations of sympathy be made to Evangel Temple Assembly of God, P.O. Box 680727, Charlotte, NC 28216.

Larkin S. Philpott

Larkin Shelton Philpot, 95, of Hinton Road, Shady Spring, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Born Jan. 24, 1905, in Henry, Va., he was the son of the late Benjamin and Emily Shelton Philpott.

Mr. Philpott was a graduate of Rocky Mount (Va.) High School and moved to the Winding Gulf area in 1924. He worked for Winding Gulf Coal Co. until the early 1930s when he took a job as a field representative for the United Mine Workers of America. During his career he served as vice president and later president of District 29 of the UMWA, and he retired in 1972 as a member of the executive board of the International Union.

He was a member of Beckley Masonic Lodge No. 95 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple in Charleston, and was a former member of the Raleigh County Airport Authority Board.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Spasiuk Philpott, on Feb. 24, 1999; a daughter, Wanda Halsey, in 1996; and nine brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Alexandria Urschel of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a grandson, Nicholas Van Halsey of Palo Alto, Calif.; two great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Hortense Philpott and Deloris Philpott, both of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews, including Sam Philpott of Beckley and Mary Sue Roberts of Lewisburg.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley, with the Rev. Joe Scheff officiating.

Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the mausoleum.

Donations of sympathy may be made to All Souls Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 313, Daniels, WV 25832.

Edward 'Stitch' Terry

Edward L. "Stitch" Terry, 89, of Lanark, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born Nov. 20, 1910, in Bedford, Va., he was the son of the late Walter Terry and Marcella Richie Terry.

Mr. Terry was a miner, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Lanark.

He was preceded in death by eight brothers and a sister.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Ann Spencer Terry; two sons, Gerald Lee Terry and Edward Allen Terry, both of Lanark; four daughters, Fern Elizabeth Freeman, Vickie Lynn Robinson, Tonya Marie Elkins and her husband, Rodney D., and Stephane Dawn Spencer, all of Beckley; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Ellen Clark of Pittsburgh; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Lanark, with Elder Luther Hairston officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before services Saturday at the church.

David R. Thurman

CREAMERY - David Ray Thurman, 38, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, near his home.

He was born Sept. 21, 1961, in the District of Columbia.

Mr. Thurman was employed by Lewisburg Cash Register as a microcomputer specialist and was a former employee of RESA I and Beckley Cash Register.

He was a 1979 graduate of Shady Spring High School, U.S. Navy veteran stationed in Greece, Hawaii and South Carolina, where he was an underwater mineman, and attended Bethel United Methodist Church, Creamery.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Ray Thurman.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Linda Mae Kruse-Stojanovich and George Stojanovich of Norristown, Pa.; his wife, Ladier Ulaki Thurman; a son, Trevor Ray Thurman at home; a daughter, Brittani Ladier Thurman at home; and four sisters, Carla Wiseman and her husband, Roy, of Beckley, Judy Stevens and her husband, Dale, of Norristown, Becky Stojanovich of Michigan and Jacqueline Stojanovich.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Revs. Sharon Miller and Anthony Carter officiating. Burial followed in Camp Ground cemetery, Creamery.

Friends called 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Family and friends served as pallbearers.

Carrie Tolliver

PRINCETON - Carrie Tolliver, 81, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Burns-Wornal Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James L. Vandall

HIX - James Lloyd Vandall, 68, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at his home following a sudden illness.

Born Jan. 25, 1936, in Sandstone, he was the son of the late Earl and Ina Taylor Vandall.

Mr. Vandall was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local No. 132. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was also a member of the Princeton Moose Lodge and Fraternal Order of Eagles, and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two sons, James Vandall of Beckley and Mike Willey of Hilldale; a daughter, Renata Wiseman of Piney View; a brother, Danny Vandall of Sandstone; five sisters, Pauline Turner of Grottoes, Va., Mary Dolin of White Sulphur Springs, Phyllis Foster of Sandstone, Dixie Hall of Ballard and Karen Cales of Sandstone; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. today at King cemetery, Sandstone, with the Rev. George Cook officiating.

There will be no visitation.

The procession will leave Pivont Funeral Home, Hinton, at 10:30 a.m. today for those wishing to attend the service.

Tommy and John Dunn, Mark Ward and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

NARROWS, Va. - Alma Christine Willis, 64, died Monday, May 8, 2000.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Burns-Wornal Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

CARLISLE - Faye Ellen Beaver, 65, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, in an Oak Hill Hospital following a short illness.

Mattie Daniel

SUNDIAL - Mattie Marie Dickens Daniel, 77, formerly of Drews Creek, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.

Born June 13, 1922, in Drews Creek, she was a daughter of the late Chris Dickens and Dora A. Workman Dickens.

Mrs. Daniel was retired from Stanard Supply Company Store in Montcoal.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Loren Gene Daniel; three sisters, Enola Webb, Tennis Taylor, and Nell Hendricks; and five brothers, Verne, Charlie, Fred, Bert and Robert Dickens.

Survivors include one brother, Chris Dickens of Amarillo, Texas; one son, Loren G. Daniel and wife Gail of Whitesville; two daughters, Sarah L. Koch and husband Rick of Ashland, Ohio, and Cathy S. Acord and husband Ivan of Beckley; five grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, one great-grandchild and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services will be noon Tuesday at Valley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.D. Pettry officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
