The Rev. Earl Pennington, 75, of Beckley, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at a Beckley area hospital following a long illness.
Born Jan. 23, 1925, in Raleigh, he was a son of the late Guy Pennington and Pearl Prince Shelton.
Rev. Pennington was a charter member of Skelton Freewill Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Fayette Freewill Baptist Conference.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from the Raleigh County Board of Education.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Ruby Keaton Pennington; his stepfather, Jim Shelton; and a brother, Hobert Pennington.
Survivors include his wife of 53 1/2 years, Ethel Taylor Pennington; a son, Ernie Pennington and his wife, Karen, of Bristol, Va.; two daughters, Kay Duncan and her husband, Randy, of Midway, and Marcie Thompson and her husband, Jim, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, Marvin Pennington of Daniels and McCray Pennington of Flat Top Lake; two grandsons, Jordan Pennington of Bristol, Va., and Ray Shrewsbury and his wife, Melissa, of Beckley; a granddaughter, Tina Cook and her husband, Bob, of Yadkinville, N.C.; two great-grandsons, Jacob and Colton Shrewsbury of Beckley; and a great-granddaughter, Paige Cook of Yadkinville.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Revs. Daniel Legg and Ron Browning, and Brother Jim Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

BRENTON - Velva "Tiney" Shields, 73, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at her residence following a long illness.
Born Aug. 11, 1926, in Montgomery, she was the daughter of the late James and Virginia Graham Hines.
Mrs. Shields was a member of Brier Creek Tabernacle and was active in the church until her illness. She lived most of her life in Wyoming County. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James Stanley Hines; and two sisters, Mollie Taylor and Donna Lookabill.
Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Ridenour of Ruther Glen, Va., and Deborah Conley of Brenton; three grandchildren, Teresa Blankenship, Carlton "Brady" Hatfield and Julianna Hatfield; and four great-grandchildren, Dewayne Bishop, Todd Bishop, Cassidee Blankenship and Grayson Stone Hatfield.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Brier Creek Tabernacle with the Revs. Timmy Brewster and Scotty Cline officiating. Burial will follow in Shannon cemetery, Baileys-ville.

Mennace P. Cisco Jr.
Mennace Perry Cisco Jr., 73, of Mount Tabor Circle, Beckley, died Monday, June 19, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.
Born Jan. 10, 1927, in Matewan, he was the son of the late Mennace P. and Dixie Browning Cisco.
Mr. Cisco spent his childhood in Matewan. He had been a resident of Raleigh County for more than 40 years and a resident of Mount Tabor Circle since 1970.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a professional driver, having worked for Continental Bus Lines, Virginia Stage Lines, Greyhound Bus Lines, Continental Trailways Bus Line, and was most recently employed by Nicely Delivery Service.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Denny and Marvin.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Nellie Barker Cisco; a daughter, Gwynn Bostic and her husband, Adrian, of Eccles; a brother, Scotty Cisco and his wife, Sarah, of Matewan; a sister, Hilda Harlan of Columbus, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Lonnie Barker and his wife, Cherly, of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial will be 2 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, with the Rev. Garry Hall officiating.
Friends may call 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary, Beckley.
Those wishing to attend graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m.

ELLISON - Martha E. Cox, 83, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at the home of her son in Franklin, Ohio, following a long illness.
Born Feb. 8, 1917, in Ellison, she was the daughter of the late Aaron and Mary Farley.
Mrs. Cox was of the Baptist faith, a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Summers County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Josiah Fred Cox, to whom she was married in Pearisburg, Va., June 22, 1940; three brothers, Dewey, Earl and Lacy Farley; two sisters, Esther Kincaid and Etta Farley; and a granddaughter, Melissa Cox.
Survivors include six sons, Fred Lee Cox of Collegeville, Pa., Thomas E. and Richard A. Cox, both of Franklin, Ohio, Norris C. Cox of Bluefield and Robert C. and Randy N. Cox, both of Ellison; a daughter, Annie Johnson of Ellison; a sister, Gaynelle Bowman of Mount Airy, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; her devoted friend, Lawrence Alexander; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. Clayton Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Farley cemetery, Ellison.
