Maria J. Motsko

Maria Jeffrey Griffy Motsko, 79, of 1310 Drews Creek Road, Naoma, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a long illness.

Born Aug. 9, 1920, in Orgas, she was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Hattie P. Hendricks Jeffrey.

Mrs. Motsko was a former waitress at several Whitesville restaurants in the 1950s.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Motsko; a son, Larry Griffy; a daughter, Hattie Lou Griffy Bailey; two grandsons, George and Henry Bailey; a sister, Betty Sherman; and two brothers, Robert "Mutt" Jeffrey and Billy G. Jeffrey.

Survivors include two sons, Allen Wayne Griffy and his wife, Judy, of Naoma and Robert W. Barker, address unknown; four grandchildren, Beverly Griffy, Allen E. Griffy, Candi Boggs and Tina Haines; seven great-grandchildren, Felecia Cook, Zachary Cook, Joshua Griffy, Jeremy Cook, Kevin Cook, Jessica Cook and Shaun Bailey; a great-great-grandchild, Samantha Bailey; a sister-in-law, Kada Jeffrey of MacArthur; three nieces; and two nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Armstrong Funeral Home Chapel, Whitesville, with the Revs. Danny Gilfilen and Ottie Tyler officiating. Singers will be The Brown Family. Burial will follow in Pineview cemetery, Orgas.

Friends may call one hour before services today at the funeral home.

James Lee Newman I

James Lee "Jimmy" "Pockets" Newman I, 47, of Sandlick, died Sunday, June 18, 2000.

Born Feb. 11, 1953, in Beckley, he was the son of Russell and Peggy Daniel Newman of Sandlick.

Mr. Newman spent his childhood in Sandlick, where he had been a lifelong resident. He was a disabled coal miner, last working for Beckley Coal Co., and was of the Christian faith. In his leisure time he enjoyed shooting pool, ginseng hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Claude and Beulah Gem Newman; and his maternal grandparents, Clifford and Tamer Daniel.

Other survivors include his daughter, Angela Green and her husband, Michael, of Beckley, and their children, Michael and Tyler; a son, James Lee Newman II of Sandlick; six brothers, Neil Newman of Beckley, Jerry Newman of Glen Daniel, Larry Newman of Clear Creek, David Newman of Vanwitt, Ohio, and John Newman and Brian Newman, both of Sandlick; two sisters, Debbie Akers of Sandlick and Mary McGrady of Bolt; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Chelsey Noel Jr. officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call noon until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.

William A. Patteson

William A. Patteson, local businessman, of Mount Hope, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at a local hospital in Beckley.

He was the son of the late Alexander M. and Virgie Lee Patteson.

He was a member of Mount Hope Methodist Church and a lifelong resident of Mount Hope. He was a World War II veteran, having served in Europe and Japan.

Mr. Patteson was active in West Virginia political circles during former Gov. Okey Pattesonıs tenure, a member of the Mount Hope Lions Club and an avid golfer and fisherman.

For some time after retirement, he was active in the family business known as Emporium Jewelry in the Raleigh Mall. For extra activities, each Wednesday at noon, he met with a group of businessmen, non-denominational, for lunch, Bible study, prayer and fellowship.

His admirable qualities were sincere friendship, honesty and integrity. His creed: "Love is the greatest of all the gifts of God." An extension of his life was to have a Godly friend.

He is survived by his wife, Julianne Buffa Patteson; a sister, Mary K. Danner of Mount Hope; two daughters and sons-in-law, respectively, Dr. Clay and Carolyn Church of Raleigh, N.C., and Dr. Michael and Susanne Tysowsky of Westchester, Pa.; several grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Mount Hope Methodist Church.

Following the ceremony, there will be a reception featuring buffet lunch in the dining hall, upstairs of the church.

Donations of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or charity of choice.

CLEVELAND - Bettie Jean Ponder, 62, formerly of Beckley, died Monday, June 19, 2000, in a Cleveland hospital following a long illness.

MIDDLEWAY - John Matthew Quesenberry, 67, formerly of Sprague, died Monday, June 19, 2000.

There will be no service at the familyıs request.

LEWISBURG - Lacy Preston Quick, 75, died Monday, June 19, 2000.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Audrey Mae Rose

INDIAN CREEK - Audrey Mae Rose, 63, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at her residence following a long illness.

Born March 5, 1937, at Indian Creek, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Short and Delcie Trent Short.

Mrs. Rose was a retired employee of the Wyoming County Board of Education, serving as a cook at Baileysville Elementary School for 23 years. She was a member of Indian Creek Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Wyoming County.

Survivors include her husband, Leonard Rose; three daughters, Patricia Rife of Abingdon, Va., Tammy Smith of Fanrock and Sharon Butcher of Beaver; a son, Leonard Ray Rose of Indian Creek; two sisters, Wilma Jean Adams of Fanrock and Helen Stafford of Beaver; two brothers, Ronnie Short of Indian Creek and Roger Short of Cleveland; and five grandchildren, Allen Ray Rife, Brandon Ratliff, Whitney Rose, Amanda Butcher and Emily Butcher.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Indian Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Sammy Lester officiating. Burial will follow in Short cemetery, Indian Creek.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville, and one hour before services Thursday at the church.

Rev. Ralph L. Smithson

LINDSIDE - The Rev. Ralph L. Smithson, 73, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 20, 2000.

Born Feb. 4, 1927, in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of the late Arthur L. and Annie Faidley Smithson.

Rev. Smithson cared deeply for his friends and family, and will be looking forward to seeing them in heaven.

He was pastor of the International Pentecostal Church of Christ, Rock Camp, for more than 30 years and was a faithful visitor to area hospitals.

He was also district overseer of the New River Conference for several years. He was a notary public who never charged anyone for his services.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lewis.

Survivors include his wife, Florence B. Smithson; two sons, Danny Smithson and his wife, Shirley, and Timmy Smithson and his wife, Hazel, all of Lindside; three daughters, Martha Booth and her husband, Tommy, of Lindside, Ruth Highlander and her husband, Earnie, of Fairlea, and Judy Hanks and her husband, Earl, of Archdale, N.C.; a brother, Howard Smithson and his wife, Beverly, of Bellevue, Ohio; a sister, Elizabeth Miller and her husband, Sonny, of Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Adam, Tabitha and Jason Smithson, Krista and Phillip Hanks, Patricia Bragg and Jennifer Gibson; and a great-grandson, Dustin Bragg.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with the Revs. Clyde Hughes, Kermit Gardner, Jimmy Rogers, Ronald Morgan and Randy Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Memorial Gardens, Lindside.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Adam Smithson, Phillip Hanks, Mike Lewis, David Lewis, Mervin Weikle and Tom Pyne.

Martha F. Stanley

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio - Martha F. Stanley, 70, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at her residence.

Born Aug. 26, 1929, in Wellsburg, she was the daughter of the late John Charles Miller and Stella Bowery Miller.

Mrs. Stanley was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Stanley Jr. on Nov. 24, 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Kay Ross and her husband, Wayne, of Cleveland and Sharen Wamsley and her husband, Carl, of Gallipolis; two sons, Tommy Givens of Gallipolis and John R. Givens and his wife, Lana, of Port Orange, Fla.; a brother, Harold Miller of Wellsburg; her former husband, David T. Givens of Point Pleasant; a special friend, Okie Reitter and family of Bethesda, Ohio; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Willis Funeral Home, Gallipolis, with the Rev. Harold Tracewell officiating. Burial will follow in Gravel Hill cemetery.

Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

JACKSON, S.C. - Gertrude Dolin Tincher, 82, formerly of Rupert, died Monday, June 5, 2000.

Graveside rites were June 10 in Jackson.
