Lorena O. Waid

RICHMOND, Va. - Lorena O'Connor Waid, 94, formerly of Beckley, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, under the care of Central Virginia Hospice in Richmond, Va.

Born Sept. 1, 1906, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Patrick Simon and Mary Elizabeth Fox O'Connor.

She was the beloved wife of the late John Barksdale Waid of Beckley.

Mrs. Waid was a graduate of Concord College and a teacher in the Raleigh County School System for more than 20 years.

She is survived by her sister, Drusilla Catherine O'Connor of Richmond, Va.; three children, Richard File Waid and his wife, Pamela, of Atlanta, Ga., Joyce Waid Bonner and her husband, Sidney, of Richmond, Va., and John Robert Waid and his wife, Lynne, of Charlottesville, Va.; eight grandchildren, Richard Lane Waid and his wife, Leslie, John Thomas Waid, Sarah Bonner Young and her husband, Mark, Scott Hudson Bonner, John Patrick Waid and his wife, Michele, Matthew Burns Waid, Mark Robert Waid, Adam Luke Waid and his wife, Kimberly; three great-grandchildren, Courtney Waid, Matthew Waid, and Nathaniel Young.

A funeral liturgy will be recited at noon Saturday at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church with the Rev. Perry Malacaman as celebrant. A rite of committal will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Park, Hinton.

Friends may call 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley.

The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia, 5540 Falmouth St., Richmond, Va., 23220 or to St. Francis deSales Catholic Church, 626 S. Oakwood Ave., Beckley, WV 25801.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Esther B. Whittaker

Esther Burnside Scarbrough Whittaker, 95, of Glen Daniel, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born Aug. 6, 1905, in Clear Creek, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Mandona Cook Scarbrough.

Mrs. Whittaker spent her childhood at Clear Creek and was a resident of the Coal River area for 65 years, moving to Stover in 1990. She attended the Van Chapel and the Arnett Chapel, and was an avid bird watcher.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John S. Burnside; her second husband, Leonard W. Whittaker; a son-in-law, Tommy L. Brown; a sister, Roena Cantley; and five brothers, Henry, Theodore, Manoah, Herbert, and Lacy Scarbrough.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane Clay and her husband, Lewis, of Glen Daniel, and Eileen Brown of Beckley; eight grandchildren, Alan, Greg, Janie, and Stephen Brown, Roger, Randy and Jeff Clay and Susie Wills; 13 great-grandchildren: Jason, Melissa, Benjamin and Zachary Brown, Jennifer, Morgan and Jarrett Clay, Brian, Sara, Meredith, Jordan and Tyler Clay and Colin Wills; two great-great-grandchildren, Andrew Clay and Ethan Wills and two sisters-in-law, Annie Scarbrow of Columbus, Ohio, and Lillian Pack of Crab Orchard.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Revs. Larry Brown and Russell Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Miller cemetery, Rock Creek.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Mack A. Woodson

ELMIRA, N.Y. - Mack Arthur Woodson, 57, formerly of Beckley, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000.

Services were held 12:30 p.m. Sept. 13, at James D. Barrett Funeral Home, Inc., 1004 Lake St., Elmira, N.Y. Burial was also held in New York.

Submitted by Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Laura Bailey

Laura Bailey, 74, of Sprague, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in a Beckley area hospital following a short illness.

Born April 12, 1926, at Skelton, she was the daughter of Ora Eva McKinney Bailey of Sprague and the late Roscoe Bailey.

Miss Bailey was a member of the Beckley Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Bailey; and a nephew, J.E. Bailey Jr.

Other survivors include nephews: Guy L. Bailey of Norfolk, Va., Roy W. Bailey of Prosperity, Jeff and David Bailey, both of Chicago, Ill.; nieces: Belinda J. Hill of Suffolk, Va., Laura and Brenda, both of Norfolk, Va., Sandy and Patty, both of Chicago, Ill.; two brothers, Bill R. Bailey and wife, Lorraine, of Norfolk, and John E. Bailey and wife, Rena, of Prosperity.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Leonard Bragg officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Lizzie Baker

DAVIN ­ Lizzie Baker, 88, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home Chapel, Man. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and one hour before the services Thursday.

Arrangements by Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home, 115 Market St., Man.

Tacy K. Black

RAINELLE ­ Sister Tacy K. Black, 87, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at her home in Roanoke, Va., following a long illness.

Born Sept. 5, 1913, in Tucker County, she was the daughter of the late Lorey and Sarah Carr Wratchford.

Sister Black was a lifelong resident of Rainelle, and was Paster and member of the Apostolic Jesus Name Church for 36 years. She had resided in Roanoke, Va., the past year with her son.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pastor O.E. Black on March 1, 1983.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Black and wife, Dreama, of Roanoke, Va.; a daughter, Sarah Carr and husband, Don, of Parsons; five granddaughters, Tacy Patterson and husband, Terry, of Roanoke, Teresa Moreno of Landis, N.C., Cheryl Ball and husband, Roger, of Rainelle, Desiree McCafferty of Smyrna, Del., Vicki Neaster of Parsons; 10 great-grandchildren, Cendlelyn and Caleb Stanley, Brandon Black, Tera and T.J. Patterson, Barbara and Johnny Moreno, Danny Carr Jr., Christopher and Alishia Neaster.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Smathers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carlos Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle.

Pallbearers will be Roger Ball, Terry Patterson, Billy Joe Ratliff, Adam Martin, Ricky Woodrum and Brian Burns.

Earl A. Farley

Earl A. Farley, 86, of 368 Mankin Ave., Beckley, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Pinecrest Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 5, 1914, at Beckley, he was the son of the late Thomas and Rebecca Fowler Farley.

Mr. Farley was a retired self-employed painting contractor. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, member of the Beckley First Church of God and was a lifelong resident of Beckley.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Farley in 1983; two brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include two sons, Sam Farley and his wife, Yvonne of St. Albans, and David Farley and his wife, Ellie, of Beckley; a daughter, the Rev. Sharon Farley of Nitro; a sister, Margaret Ford and her husband, Merle, of Shady Spring; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Beckley First Church of God, with the Rev. Ronnie Cook, assisted by the Rev. Sharon Farley officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, and one hour before the services Thursday at the church.

Men of the church will serve as pallbearers.

Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.

Piney Harrah

Piney Harrah, 89, of Daniels, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at an area care facility.

Born April 12, 1911, at Grandview, she was the daughter of the late Jeff and Rosetta Fox Pugh.

Mrs. Harrah was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, including her sister, Lillie McGuire, who died a few hours prior to Piney's passing.

Survivors include three sons, Benny Harrah of Chicago, Ill., Billy and wife, Jodie, of Carpenters, Ill., and Erskine Harrah and wife, Lee, of Stanaford; a daughter, Ellen Lucas of Daniels; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Jessie Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Emmagene C. Hornsby

FAYETTEVILLE ­ Emmagene Caldwell H ornsby, 81, formerly of Smithers, passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.

Born July 23, 1919, at Smithers, she was the daughter of the late M.Z. Caldwell and Mariah Holden Caldwell.

Mrs. Hornsby was a housewife, and owner/operator of Emmagene's Ceramics.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Les" Hornsby; a son, Leslie E. Hornsby; and six brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Kitty Lynn Williams and husband, Douglas, of Pasco, Wash.; a daughter-in-law, Sharen Hornsby of Chesterfield, Va.; a sister, Annastine Shrewsbury of Montgomery; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Robert Mattox officiating. Burial will follow.

Arrangements by Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville.
