EAST BANK - Grace Kincaid Goode, 87, died Thursday, April 17, 2003.

There will be no visitation.

Graveside rites will be 1 p.m. Monday at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Ann Lonker

Ann Lonker, 101, of Beckley, formerly of Charleston, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at her home following a long illness.

Born Sept. 20, 1901, in Mabscott, she was the daughter of Croatian immigrants John and Frances Studajhur Lonker.

Ann was raised in Beckley where she attended school and worked. She then moved to Charleston where she resided for 55 years. Many of her years in Charleston were spent working as an executive legal secretary to Supreme Court Justice Frank Haymond.

Upon returning to Beckley, Ann made her home with her niece, Margaret Lonker Daniel.

Being of Croatian descent, Ann loved speaking and teaching the language to family and friends. She also loved to cook, creating a variety of ethnic and country meals and baking Croatian pastries and bread, calling herself a "Continental Chef."

She had a passion for fashion and was an avid collector of hats and shoes.

She was very proud of her active membership in the Orchard Valley Women's Club, where she was a member for 25 years, serving on the scholarship committee. Ann was also a member of the Degree of Honor Protective Association Lodge No. 56.

Ann was of the Christian faith and attended Methodist churches.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Johnnie Lonker, Mike Lonker and Joe Lonker; and three sisters, Donna Barthelomess, Mary Margaret Lonker and Francis McDonald.

Survivors include a sister, Josephine Tolos of Clearwater, Fla.; 19 nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, John McDonald.

Special thanks to Ann's caregivers, Kerri Persinger, Mary Gonzalez, Patty Evans and Regina Thompson.

The family would also like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Southern West Virginia for their service.

A celebration of Ann's life will be held at a later date.

Patsy Ruth Lucas

Patsy Ruth Lucas, 60, of the Stover area of Glen Daniel, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a long illness.

Born May 15, 1942, at Packsville, she was a daughter of the late Don Edward and Lottie Pettry Holsten.

She was a homemaker and had resided at Glen Daniel for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Lucas; a son, John H. Lucas Jr.; a granddaughter, Savannah Sunshine Maynor; five sisters, Brookie Runion, Alphie May, Jiney Sue, Margaret and Ada Holsten; and four brothers, Harry, Herbie, Ted and Sammy Holsten.

Survivors include four daughters, Tabatha Maynor and husband, Dean, of Toney's Fork, Rhonda Turner and husband, David, of Glen Daniel, and Twanny Lucas and Chelsey Price, both at home; two sons, John W. Lucas and wife, Cassie, of Glen Daniel and Scotty J. Lucas and wife, Carla, of Beckley; six sisters, Norma Jean Browning and Donna Lou Hall, both of Bee Branch, Monrita Aliff and husband, Okie, of Pine Branch, Debbie Sue Massey and husband, David, and Rosie Holsten, all of Glen Daniel, and Lillian Ann Hendricks and husband, Jim, of Bolt; five brothers, Don Holsten Jr. and wife, Nobel, of Whitesville, Charles E. "Buck" Holsten and wife, Stella, of Glen Daniel, Denny Ray Holsten and wife, Sharon, of Michigan, John Wayne Holsten of North Carolina and Robert Lee Holsten of Pine Branch; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Armstrong Funeral Home Chapel, Whitesville, with the Rev. Roger Elkins officiating. Interment will follow in Kemper-Clay cemetery, Dameron, Glen Daniel.

Pallbearers will be Mike Stump, Scotty Lafferty, Wayne Condia, Jessie Lafferty, David Turner and Mark Ledger.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Betty L. McClary

ALDERSON - Betty L. McClary, 73, passed away Friday, April 18, 2003, in Brier Nursing Home, Fairlea, after a long illness.

Born July 30, 1929, in Alderson, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth H. Raines and Nell Grimmett Raines Rookstool.

Mrs. McClary had been a resident of Alderson for several years and was formerly of Alexandria, Va. She was a member of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, a homemaker, and was retired from the U.S. government as a secretary.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. McClary Sr., in 1995; a daughter, Nancy Canterbury; and a sister, Joan Dixon.

Survivors include a daughter, Geri Dotson and husband, Wayne, of Alderson; a sister, Joyce A. Burcher of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Kenneth H. Raines Jr. of Bel Air, Md., and Bobby Gene Raines, address unknown; three grandchildren, Greg Dotson, Mike Canterbury and Lori Miller; and two great-grandchildren, Madison Miller and Alli Canterbury.

Graveside service and burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at Fletcher Addition of Alderson cemetery with the Rev. Roger Persinger officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Ben Morgan

MARLINTON - Ben Morgan, 90, passed away Friday, April 18, 2003, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.

He was born near Fairmont, Marion County, and was the son of the late James Franklin and Mollie Morris Morgan. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Morgan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fairmont State College where he was president of his senior class. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from West Virginia University in 1935 and began his career as assistant county extension agricultural agent in Greenbrier County. His career, which spanned 43 years, included 21 years in West Virginia Cooperative Extension Agricultural Service as a county agent in Greenbrier, Ritchie and Pocahontas counties, and extension livestock specialist at West Virginia University. He retired as professor of animal science extension at The Pennsylvania State University after 22 years of service to the livestock industry in Pennsylvania.

A judge at major livestock shows in the Eastern United States, and at the National Livestock Show in Chicago, Mr. Morgan played a major role in development of the Keystone International Livestock Exposition in Harrisburg, Pa. He served as exposition manager from 1958 to 1963 in addition to his work as extension animal scientist. Throughout his career he served as adviser to numerous state, regional and national livestock organizations.

As a 4-H Club member in his growing up years, Mr. Morgan was recognized as one of West Virginia's outstanding 4-H Club members by being awarded the Governor's Gold Metal. A 4-H All Star, he was invited to attend the 100-year Anniversary Celebration of 4-H Club work at WVU Jackson's Mill in June 2002.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the nation's livestock industry, Mr. Morgan was named a Honorary Fellow of the American Society of Animal Science in 1976, the highest award in the livestock industry; the Pennsylvania Livestock Man of the Year in 1975; and he received the Epsilon Sigma Delta Extension Award in 1974. While serving as an agricultural agent in West Virginia, he was president of the National Association of County Agents and also received its Distinguished Service Award.

Member and elder of Marlinton Presbyterian Church, Mr. Morgan served six years on the Committee on Ministry of the Presbytery of West Virginia. He was active in the Rotary Club for over 50 years both in State College, Pa., and Marlinton and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the latter club.

Mr. Morgan is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Ruth Carson McClintic; two daughters, Stephany Morgan of Staunton, Va., and Nancy Morgan Roche and husband, Dr. James Roche, of Charlottesville, Va.; two grandchildren, James Morgan Roche of Arlington, Va., and Caroline Carson Roche of Pittsburgh; brother-in-law, Wilbur M. Jones of Zelienople, Pa.; and sister-in-law, Lois Morgan of Fairmont.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Naomi Morgan and Neva Morgan Jones, and a brother, Morris G. Morgan, all of Fairmont.

Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. today at VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton. Burial will be private.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Marlinton Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Susan Sharp Campbell officiating. After the service, the family will receive friends and invite all to share in a reception in the Church Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marlinton Presbyterian Church, the Opera House Restoration Project, Pocahontas County Landmarks Commission, P.O. Box 125, Marlinton, WV 24954 or charity of your choice.

Aaron Daniel Shelford

RICHWOOD - Aaron Daniel Shelford, infant son of Daniel Lee and Tammy Sue Shelford, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in Women and Children's Hospital, Charleston.

He is survived by two sisters, Jennifer Lee and Cassandra Eileen of Left Hand; paternal grandparents, Gene and Betty Shelford of Bradley; maternal grandparents, Jerry and Sue Hammons of Craigsville; maternal great-grandfather, Bill Shuttlesworth of Richwood; aunts, Rechanda Hammons of Craigsville and Ruth Shelford of Beckley; and uncle, Timothy Shelford of Schwenksville, Pa.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood, with Pastor Roy Huffman officiating.

William 'Willie' Watkins

William "Willie" Watkins, 89, of Sunbridge Pine Lodge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Beckley, died Wednesday, April, 16, 2003, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born Sept. 12, 1913, at Nuttallburg, he was the son of the late William Watkins and Mattie Calloway Watkins White.

Mr. Watkins was a retired miner and retired from Beckley Hospital as an orderly. He was a member of Harvey Missionary Baptist Church and a 50-year member of UMWA Local District 17. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in World War II.

He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.

Survivors include nephews, Samuel Robinson and wife, Kristy, of Beckley, James Johnson and wife, Katherine, of Cleveland, Elmo Miller and Melvin Mosby, both of Hyatts-ville, Md., Gregory DeBerry of Roanoke, Va., Mark Carrington of Beckley, Charles Carrington and wife, Joyce, of Jonben, William Carter and wife, Elizabeth, of Glen White, Thomas Carter and wife, Katie, of Lester and Daniel Watkins Jr., Donnie Watkins and Michael Watkins, all of Lackawanna, N.Y.; nieces, Sherba Dean Stewart and husband, Billy, of Columbus, Ohio, Nona Gay Watkins and Nieces Watkins, both of Lackawanna, and Chiquitta McCray and husband, Michael, of Beckley; sister-in-law, Lucille Watkins of Lackawanna; and a host of great-nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Harvey Missionary Baptist with the Rev. A.L. Simms officiating. Burial will follow in Meadow Haven Memorial Park, Ingram Branch.

Friends may call one hour before service Tuesday at the church.

ACCOVILLE - JoAnn West, 39, died Friday, April 18, 2003 at Heartland nursing home following a long illness.

Pearletta Carmen Young

Pearletta Carmen Young went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 18, 2003, in a local hospital after a long illness.

Born Feb. 13, 1921, at Abney, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Priscilla Pack.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Earl Young; a son, William D. Young; a son-in-law, Samuel Houch; a daughter-in-law, Maxine Young; three grandchildren, Jeffery Dean Houck, Judy Kay Keaton and Joey Young; brothers, Elijah Dean Pack, Carlos Jackson Pack and Gerald Chester Pack; and sisters, Mary Estaline Sisk, Georgia Myrtle Wyatt and Mildred Lewis.

Survivors include her children, Christie Lea Cummings and husband, Frank, Christine Marie Houck, Robert Earl Young, Richard Dale Young and wife, Peggy, Samuel Eugene Young and wife, Sharon, Donnie Leon Young, Linda Karen Miller and husband, Ron, Charlotte Ann Hicks and husband, Bill, Lyna Gail Webb and husband, Mike, and Tammy Lynn Carter and husband, Don; three brothers, Sam Pack of Mabscott, Jimmy Pack of Chicago and Lionell Pack of Australia; sisters, Nellie Barnabi and husband, Bob, Shirley Brier and Beatrice Hylton; 28 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was the greatest mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and sister life had to offer. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Ronald Adkins officiating and special prayer by Pastor Ronnie Hall. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call two hours before service today at the funeral home.

Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

John ‘Bill’ Allen

On Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, John William “Bill” Allen Sr. of Rainelle, formerly of Fairdale, died at his home. He was 84 years of age. He had been in declining health for a number of years.

Known affectionately as Bill all his life, he was the third of nine children born to the late Elbert and Carrie Bradford Allen. Bill was born Nov. 6, 1922, at Spanker’s Branch near Fairdale.

Bill spent his childhood at Fairdale. He entered the U.S. Army during World War II in 1943; he fought in the battles of Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe; he was recipient of the good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal. Honorably discharged in 1946, he re-enlisted in the Army in 1948 and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

After his stints in service, Bill moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he and his wife Ennis settled in the Hillgate section of the south end of the city. He began a career with Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Co. (now AEP). He retired in 1973 as a supervisor and came to Rainelle.

Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, ginsenging, watching the deer that came in his yard and four-wheeling with his buddy, Jim Bates.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ernie Trump; a brother, Sebert Allen; and a sister-in-law, Stollie “Doll” Ryan.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 54 years, Ennis Birchfield Allen; he was the loving father of Barbara Withers and her husband, Gary, of Columbus, John William Allen Jr. and his wife, Etta, of Daniels and Herbert Francis and his wife, Donna, of Powellton; the dear grandfather of Lindsay Withers and her friend, Matt, and Amber Withers, all of Columbus, Chris and Kari Allen, both of Daniels, Scott Francis and his wife, Christina, and Keith Francis, all of Powellton, and Brandon Puckett of Raleigh, N.C.: a great-granddaughter, Taylor Francis; a sister, Inez Cole and her husband, John; brothers, Bob Allen and his wife, Edna, Virgil Allen and his wife, Dumpy, and Shirley Allen and his wife, Phyllis, all of Fairdale, Earl Allen of Roanoke and Wandell Allen and his wife, Linda, of Columbus, Ind.; his wife’s family, the Birchfields who fondly called him “Cecil,” brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnny Birchfield and his wife, Shirley, Roger Birchfield and his wife, Patty, and Vickie Harris, all of Rainelle, Stanley Birchfield and his wife, Nancy, of Covington, Va., and Stellie “Del” Ryan and her husband, Jim, of Lockborne, Ohio; special friends, Jim Bates, Carl Wells, Timmy and the staff of Taco Bell of Charmco; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary, Beckley. In keeping with his wishes, Bill will be cremated following visitation.
