Lorene Virginia Phillips Shumate Collier

Lorene Virginia Phillips Shumate Collier, 83, of Beckley, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2007.

Born May 13, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Billie and Viola Phillips.

Lorene loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed needlework and sewing. Lorene attended First Christian Church of Beckley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Wanus Shumate; second husband, John D. Collier; daughter, Glora Shumate Martin Bryant; son, John D. Collier II; and great-grandson, Steven Cole.

Those left to cherish her memory include daughters, Joyce Phipps and husband, Dallas, of Beckley and Alice S. Johnson of Hopewell, Va.; son, Richard Collier and wife, Mamie, of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; sister, Shirley Pendry of Powhatan, Va.; brother, Gene Phillips and wife, Betty, of Picayune, Miss.; 10 grandchildren, Greg Phipps and wife, Mary, of Beckley, Debra Byrant and husband, Dan, of Hickory, N.C., Diane Lilly of Hurricane, Melanie Urquhart and husband, Joey, of Athens, Karen Johnson of Jacksonville, N.C., Joel Johnson of Hopewell, Aaron Collier and wife, Kristin, of New Orleans, La., Alex Collier of North Wilkesboro, Kristy Jerrell and husband, Luke, of Terre Haute, Ind., and John D. Collier III of Terre Haute; and nine great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Randy Smithson officiating.

Friends may gather with the family one hour before service.

Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25801.

Katharine Ann Haga

Katharine Ann Haga, 84, of Prosperity, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, in a Charleston hospital.

Born Aug. 16, 1922, in Tyrone, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Raymond A. and Katharine Kohn Hagerman.

Mrs. Haga was a retired registered nurse, having worked at Raleigh General Hospital, and was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Beckley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde C. Haga; a daughter, Sandra Haga; a son, Jim R. Haga; and four sisters, Helen Crowell, Rae Foust, Rosemary Rollason and Doris Matevich.

Mrs. Haga had been a resident of Raleigh County since 1949.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Midkiff and her husband, Tommy, of Prosperity; four grandchildren, Lori Midkiff, Julie Midkiff, James C. Haga and Barbie Little and husband, Mark; and six great-grandchildren, Colton Haga, Cheyenne Haga, Harley Haga, Katie Little, Maggie Little and Drew Little.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Beckley, with the Rev. Eric Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Katharine Haga’s memory to St. Stephens Memorial Fund, 200 Virginia St., Beckley, W.Va. 25801.

Macie H. Weeks Legg

OAK HILL — Macie H. Weeks Legg, 79, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at her home.

Born Aug. 2, 1927, at Maplewood, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Amy Edith Fox Weeks.

Mrs. Legg attended Bradley Freewill Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Andrew Legg; two half brothers, George Weeks and Jennings Weeks; and a half sister, Lois Summers.

Survivors include a son, Philip Eugene Legg and his companion, Alicia Cantley, of Oak Hill; two sisters, Doris Beard of Daytona, Fla., and Virginia “Ginny” Motko of Ellington, Fla.; two grandchildren, Steven Michael Legg of Carlisle and Karen Rena Law of Medina, Ohio; and a great-grandson, Michael Crites of Oak Hill.

Graveside rites and committal service will be noon today at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with the Rev. Daniel Legg officiating. Burial will follow.

Friends may call 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. today at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.

Rev. Robert Paul Lester

MOUNT HOPE — The Rev. Robert Paul Lester, 81, of Mount Hope, formerly of Coal City, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, in a Beckley care home following a long illness.

Born June 7, 1925, in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Walter and Roberta Watson Lester.

Rev. Lester was an active member of Rock Creek Community Church and he was in the ministry for over 25 years. He was also very proud of his involvement in Raleigh County Civil Defense.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Tankersley Lester, in 1991; his son, Darrell R. Lester, in 2000; son-in-law, Joe R. Dalton Jr., in 2006; and his special friend, Ruby Beery, in 2006. Seven brothers and sisters also precede him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Dalton of Union; sister, Beulah Maxey of Loraine, Ohio; grandson, Vincent Dalton and wife, Kristi, of Orange City, Fla.; granddaughters, Michelle Dalton of Union and Jessie Lester of Beckley; stepgrandsons, Mark and Eddie Lester; great-granddaughter Erion Dalton of Orange City; great-grandson Nicholi Dalton of Union; special friends, Loretta Burress, Carolyn Peery and Jay Mitchell; and a large extended family.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Jay Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Coal City Community cemetery.

Friends may call one hour before service Sunday.

Dorothy Lee Rhodes Hanshew Maxwell

PORTLAND, Mich. — Dorothy Lee Rhodes Hanshew Maxwell, 73, formerly of Danese, died Jan. 2, 2007.

Service was Jan. 5 at First Baptist Church of Portland.

Arrangements by Schrauben-Lehman, Portland.

James H. Morris

CALDWELL — James H. Morris, 61, passed away early Friday morning, Jan. 12, 2007, at his home with his wife by his side after a short illness.

Born Aug. 27, 1945, in Monroe County, he was the son of the late James Ernest and Rosella Mae Hoke Morris.

Mr. Morris was a lifelong resident of Monroe County and was employed with Mullican’s Saw Mill in Ronceverte for 35 years.

Mr. Morris was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Dorothy Adwell; a son, James Ernest Morris; two sisters, Beulah Dunbar and Lillie Bostic; and two brothers, George Morris and Raymond Morris.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Mable Carrington Morris; two daughters, Tammy Mentz and husband, J.D., of Glace and Susan Morris of Sweet Springs; two sons, Danny Morris and wife, Autumn, of Glace and Johnnie Morris of Ronceverte; five sisters, Loretta Profeta of North Carolina, Nellie Carter of Lewisburg and Alice Vance, Vernie Alexander and Rita Pilkenton, all of White Sulphur Springs; and a brother, Robert Morris of Glace.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, at Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, with the Rev. Ralph Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow in Adwell cemetery, Ronceverte.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Longanacre Funeral Home, Fairlea, is in charge of arrangements.

Vada Ann Mullins

HERNDON HEIGHTS — Vada Ann Mullins, 64, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born Feb. 18, 1942, at Algomia, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Gertrude Burks Mullins.

Miss Mullins was a homemaker, a 30-year resident of Herndon Heights and a member of Guyandotte Baptist Church.

In her leisure, she enjoyed animals and taking care of and spending time with nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers.

Those left to cherish her memory include nine sisters, a brother and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Guyandotte Baptist Church, Herndon Heights, with Elders Melvin and Nathan Lane officiating. Burial will follow in Lusk cemetery, Herndon Heights.

Friends may call one hour before service Sunday at the church.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Wilma Lee Armstrong

CORLISS — Wilma Lee Armstrong, 53, of Corliss, died Friday morning, Jan. 12, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a short illness.

Born April 7, 1953, in Fayette County, she was a daughter of Nona Fox Kincaid of Crickmer and the late Billie Kincaid.

Wilma was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Those left to mourn are her husband, Waymen Lewis Armstrong; mother, Nona Fox Kincaid of Crickmer; daughter, Rebecca Evans and husband, Charlie, of Scarbro; sister, Brenda Lilly and husband, Bill, of Layland; brothers, Alfred Kincaid of Beckley and Richard Kincaid of Danese; two grandchildren, Megan and Cody Evans of Scarbro; two stepgrandchildren, Chuck and Travis Evans of Lansing; several nieces and nephews; and numerous friends and family.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Allen Whitt officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Louise Thornton Clark

PENHOOK, Va. — Louise Thornton Clark, 70, of Penhook, formerly of Covel, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2007.

She was born Sept. 17, 1936, to the late Bernard and Janett Thornton and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Louise Clark, and brothers, Bernard Junior Thornton and Olen Lee Thornton.

Louise was an owner of the Penhook Boat Dock and was known for the “Louise Cheeseburger.” She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by all.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, George Bea Clark; children, Debbie Rowles and husband, Danny, of Gretna, Va., George “Butch” Clark and wife, Lynn, of Penhook, Sharon Williams and husband, Donnie, of Penhook and Shawna Henry and husband, Ron, of Rustburg, Va.; grandchildren, Chastity McBroom and husband, John, Jamie Clark, Brandon Gautier, Derek Lester, Jeremy Clark, Cassi Williams, Steven and Kaley Henry; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home, Princeton, with the Rev. Judith Short officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.

Her family will be receiving friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at Flora Funeral Service, South Main Street, Rocky Mount, Va., and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home, Honaker Road, Princeton.
