Lillian Christine Smalls Bennett

Lillian Christine Smalls Bennett, 75, of Prosperity, went to be with our Lord and Savior on April 20, 2003, after a long hard battle with diabetes.

Born Feb. 25, 1928, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late William Smalls and Flora Ripley Smalls.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was a member of the Open Invitation Church of Beckley. She was a wonderful mother and loving grandmother, and a resident of Prosperity for 46 years.

She was preceded in death by a son, Stacey Bennett in 1998.

Survivors include two daughters, Rita Blake and her husband, Dee of Beckley and Ginger Dameron and her husband, Ben of Prosperity; two sons, Lane Bennett and his wife, Carmella of North Carolina and Darrell Bennett and his wife, Jane of Mann; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; loving neighbors; and an abundance of friends and the wonderful caregivers at Heartland.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley with Pastor Mark Dameron officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Grandsons, Chris Blake, Chris Dameron, Emmett Deavers, Stacey Bennett II, Dale Lineberger, Robbie Cyrus and Brad Smith will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the Open Invitation Church, P.O. Box 493, Prosperity, WV 25909.

Doris 'Dot' Bryant

PAMPLIN, Va. - Doris "Dot" Shawver Bryant, 86, of Rt. 1, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, in Appomattox Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Traphes L. Bryant.

Born in Mabscott, April 1, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Lura Parker Shawver.

Dot retired from the National Security Agency and was a member of Rocks Baptist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star No. 91, Alexandria, Va., a former member of Hollywood Baptist Church, MacArthur, W.Va. and a volunteer at the Beckley Veterans Hospital.

She was very proud of her membership in the National Democratic Party. Dot made "His and Hers" outfits for Lyndon Johnson's beagles.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, S. Patrick and Patricia H. Shawver of Pamplin; three grandchildren, Lura Lynn S. Kidd and her husband, James W. Kidd Jr. of Pamplin, Patrick P. and his wife, Susan Gentry Shawver of Albany, N.Y., and Leslie P. and his wife, Suzanne O'Brien Shawver of Gladys, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Samuel Parker Kidd of Pamplin, Patrick John Shawver, Nathan Charles Shawver and Megan Elizabeth Shawver, all of Albany, N.Y.; a sister, Vivian Mae Wolf of Mabscott; sister-in-law, Ruby Shawver of Beckley; brother-in-law, Bill Bryant of Georgia; extended family, David L. Hodge Jr. and his wife, Wanda, Melinda H. Davis and her husband, Johnny, all of Hartsville, S.C. and Mitchell S. Hodge and his wife, Angie of Forest, Va.; seven great-grandchildren, Danielle Hodge, Scott Hodge, Kera Davis, Casey Hodge, Ashlyn Hodge, Ryann Davis and Luke Davis; and two special friends, Jackie Withrow of Beckley and Josephine Tuggle of Appomattox.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel F. Shawver; a sister, Mary Jane Oelmann; and a daughter-in-law, Carol Sue Shawver.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Robinson Funeral Home, Appomattox, Va., with the Rev. Chris Harbin officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. and other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Ranson's Rural Retreat, Cancer Relay for Life, Rt. 1 Box 56A, Pamplin, VA, 23958 or Rocks Baptist Church, Rt. 1 Box 80A, Pamplin, VA 23958.

Daisy Mae Burdette

MEADOW BRIDGE - Daisy Mae Burdette, 58, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 20, 2003, at her home following a short illness with her family and her fiance by her side.

Born on May 5, 1944, at Meadow Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Elvin "Red" and Lena Bragg.

Daisy was a Christian of the Pentecostal faith, talented in many ways, who worked as a seamstress most of her life.

Daisy is also preceded in death by her husband of 20 years, Jack "Ross" Burdette Sr.; two brothers, Dewey and Homer Bragg and two sisters, Betty Ewing and Ethel Bragg.

Survivors include her fiance, James Henry Balser of Meadow Bridge; a son, Jack "Leo" Burdette and wife, Mary of Manassas, Va.; two daughters, Tammy Lynn Moul and husband, Harry of Meadow Bridge and Linda Joann Wykle and husband, Doug of Loops Road; three sisters, Nellie Tincher and husband, Dairol of Craig, Louise Littlepage and husband, Walter of Meadow Bridge and Joann Crowe and husband, Edward of Meadow Bridge; six grandchildren, Danielle and Zachary Moul, D.J. and Jeremy Wykle and Michelle and David Gonzalez; four great-grandchildren, Brandon, Mercedes, Diamond and Rachele Gonzalez; three nephews; five nieces and other family and friends.

She will be sadly missed by many.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Evangelist Shirley Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Patton Memorial cemetery, Meadow Bridge.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

MOUNT HOPE - Laura Hannah, 71, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Jessie James Harris

NIMITZ - Jessie James Harris, age 78, died Monday morning, April 21, 2003, in Summers County A.R.H. following a long illness.

Born Oct. 8, 1924, at Blue Jay, he was the son of the late Wesley T. and Laura Ann Mills Harris.

Mr. Harris was a retired coal miner with Eastern Associated Coal Company and also was formerly employed at Wilcox Manufacturing. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of UMWA District 29.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Patricia Susan Harris; two brothers, Charles and Shirley Harris and two sisters, Wadeline Martin and Anna Lee Williams.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Marguerite Lilly Harris; a son, James Michael Harris and wife, Melissa of Jumping Branch; two sisters, Joyce Taylor of Rockingham, N.C., and Betty Jean Higginbotham and husband, Dean of Peterstown; four grandchildren, Jennifer Heather Rose Harris, James Michael Harris Jr., William Chase Whittaker and Jessie Hunter Harris; and three great-grandchildren, Erin Chanel Wertz, Devin Michael Harris and Derrick Jeffrey Adler.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the John P. Lilly cemetery, Nimitz, with Pastor Darrell Hamm officiating. Burial will follow.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Pivont Funeral Home, Hinton.

Those wishing to attend graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home by noon on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be James M. Harris Jr., Tommy E. Lilly, Todd Higginbotham, Danny M. Lilly, Curtis Pack and Harold Williams Jr.

Lala Ratliff Keeney

MCROSS - Lala Ratliff Keeney, 97, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Heartland of Rainelle Nursing Home, after a long illness.

Born Jan. 28, 1906, at Red Star, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Emma Mitchum Ratliff.

Mrs. Kenney was a member of McRoss Baptist Church, and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Summers W. Keeney on Feb. 9, 1973; three sisters, Reba Persinger, Gladys Morris, and Irene Martin and three brothers, Hubert, Clarence, and Luther Ratliff; a daughter, Kathleen Shawver; a son, Bobby Lee Keeney; a grandson, Sonny Shawver, and a granddaughter, Debbie Kenney.

Survivors include two sons, Billy W. Keeney of Corliss and Tom Keeney of Summersville; and several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with the Revs. Gene Bennett and John Wyatt officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Therre will be no evening visitation.

Friends may call one hour before the service from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Timothy Mark Ames Jr.

Timothy “Mark” Ames Jr., 23, of Beckley, passed away Friday July 14, 2006.

Born December 18, 1982 he was the son of Charlotte Bandy Ames and Timothy Mark Ames Sr. of Beckley.

Mark loved the outdoors and especially loved riding four wheelers.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Delores Rodgers, maternal grandfather James Elroy Bandy, paternal grandmother Novella Rudell and paternal grandfather Thomas Edward Ames.

In addition to his parents, those left to cherish his memory include three children, Chassity Leighann Williams, Anthony Jared Ward and Timothy James "TJ" Ames, his brother Derrick Jenkins, and his fiancée Christina Marie Lilly, all of Beckley, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday July 20, 2006 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Gene Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ronald Lee Bennett

Ronald Lee Bennett, 72, of Shady Spring, died Thursday, July 13, 2006, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, following a short illness.

Born at New on September 16, 1933, he was the son of the late Johnny and Rheba Brogan Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was retired from the Rex Hinge Company as a foreman in Cleveland, Ohio, and was the former owner and operator of the Shady Spring S&S Service Station. He had attended the New Salem Baptist Church at Abraham, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by brothers Buford, Wriston, and Howard; and by sisters, Margaret and Marcella.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Cook Bennett; a son, Michael Lee Bennett of Temple, Texas, and currently stationed in Iraq; brothers, Steve Bennett and wife Della of Raleigh and Russell Bennett of Oak Hill; and grandchildren, Sarah, Hayleigh, and Ashleigh.

Graveside rites and burial will be held at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity on Wednesday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John Wesley Richmond officiating.

Friends may call at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home at Shady Spring today from 6 until 8 p.m.

John Dewey Brakefield

John Dewey Brakefield, 85, of Coal City, went to Heaven Monday, July 17, 2006, following a long illness.

Born June 12, 1921, in Niato, Ala., he was the son of the late Zebadee and Carrie Rock Brakefield.

He had previously worked for the Virginian Railroad and was a retired conductor from the Northfolk and Southern Railroad.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Coy, Billy and Ross Brakefield, and a sister-in-law, Loretta Crews; a grandson, Steven D. Brakefield and an infant sister.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Juanita Marie Lilly Brakefield; three sons, Bennie Brakefield and wife, Catherine of Coal City, L.D. “DeeDee” Brakefield and wife, Sue of Coal City, and Larry E. Brakefield and wife, Judy of Elk Ridge, Md.; two brothers, James Brakefield of Sebring, Fla., and Thomas Brakefield of Griffen, Ga.; two sisters, Orlean Corbitt of Warrior, Ala., and Carrie Glover of Douglasville, Ga.; six grandchildren, Sheila, Aaron, Jonathan, Robert, Jennifer and Stacy; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Hills Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Grayson Lilly and Pastor Melvin Jamison officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of the services Wednesday at the church.
