Roseann Pavick Kotzin

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - Roseann Pavick Kotzin, 58, sister of Amber West of Fayetteville, died April 5, 2003, in Florida.

Graveside memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Sallie McMann LaFon

ORGAN CAVE - Sallie McMann LaFon, 88, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.

Harold 'Firecracker' Meadows

Harold Dean "Firecracker" Meadows, 52, of Besoco, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born May 17, 1951, in Beckley, he was the son of Lucille Bolen Meadows and the late Okey Meadows.

Mr. Meadows was a lifelong resident of Besoco.

Harold, known as "Firecracker" to everyone, was disabled due to cerebral palsy. But Harold had a good life. He was a graduate of Stoco High School, Class of 1969, and had many friends.

He was well known and well thought of in the Besoco and Josephine communities. He was of the Christian faith.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Almeda Meadows; his maternal grandparents, Jim and Pearl Bolen; and an aunt and uncle, Marcell and Quincy Bolen.

Survivors in addition to his mother, Lucille, are four aunts, Zinie Bolen and Macie Shrewsbury and her husband, Coy, all of Josephine, Mary Bell Archer and her husband, John, of Arcanum, Ohio, and Naomi Bolen of Josephine; an uncle, Orlen Bolen of Josephine; and several cousins.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Jenny Cole cemetery, Odd, with the Rev. Dan Coalson officiating.

Friends may call noon until time of service Sunday at the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Doss, Kenneth May, Billy Abner, Danny Bolen, Bootsie Puckett and Allen Bell.

Kathryn White Sarrett

Kathryn White Sarrett, 88, of Edgell Street, Beckley, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in SunBridge Pine Lodge Care and Rehabilitation following a long illness.

Born Oct. 13, 1914, in St. Albans, she was the daughter of the late Hansford Edgar and Mary Louise Barnett White.

Mrs. Sarrett spent her childhood in St. Albans and was a graduate of St. Albans High School. She also graduated from the Kana-wha Valley Hospital School of Nursing, received an associate degree from Beckley College and graduated from Bluefield State College. She was a nurse practitioner and was an operating room supervisor at the Beckley Veterans Administration Medical Center from where she retired with more than 27 years of service. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, a past member of the American Nurses Association, past member of the West Virginia Nurses Association and was an honorary member of the Raleigh General Nurses Alumni.

Mrs. Sarrett was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. She was a 50-year volunteer of the American Red Cross, a past president of the American Cancer Society and the Beckley Business and Professional Woman's Club. She was also a member of the Beckley Quota Club, former member of the Beckley Woman's Club and a 50-year member of the Coal City Order of the Eastern Star, Judea Shrine No. 13, where she served as past worthy matron.

She was married for 61 years to Virgil A. Sarrett, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Carpenter; and two brothers, Ross and Randall White.

Survivors include a brother, Randolph P. White and his wife, Sandra, of St. Albans; a sister-in-law, Gail White of Scott Depot; two nieces, Levona Lupton and husband, Joe, of Hampton, Va., and Barbara McGirr and husband, Mike, of Kettering, Ohio; three nephews, Hansford "Hank" White and wife, Sandy, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Holly White and wife, Judy, of Winfield and David White and wife, Lynn, of Lugoff, S.C.; five great-nieces and nephews, Jason and Jacob White, Kelli Jones, Lisa Schmidt and Taryn Talbott; five great-great-nephews; two great-great-nieces; a cousin, Yvonne Kincaid and husband, Arthur, of Largo, Fla.; two companion caregivers, Linda Wood and Peggy Grimmett.

Service will be 3 p.m. today at Beckley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Malcolm Brownlee officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends called 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Melton Mortuary, Beckley, and may call one hour before service time today at the church.

Pallbearers will be Roy Bazzarre, Tom Truman, Chuck Tupper and men of the church; honorary pallbearers include Lane Murphy and Ike Mitchell.

In keeping with Mrs. Sarrett's request, memorial gifts may be made to Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, WV 25801.

Flora G. 'Gennie' Shanklin

Flora Genevieve "Gennie" Shanklin, 92, of Beckley, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, in a local care facility of natural causes.

Born Jan. 31, 1911, in Beaver Falls, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Alvyn Hayes and Flora Virginia Steel Bush.

Mrs. Shanklin retired from Beckley National Bank after 25 years, working in the Mortgage/Loan Department. She was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church where she served as treasurer of various departments in the church, was a member of Beckley Woman's Club, Rhododendron Garden Club and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross and the Raleigh County Historical Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Boon Shanklin, in 1971; her daughter, Cecelia Carolyn Shanklin; an infant son, Clifford Steel Shanklin; her four sisters, Mildred Griffith Smith, Mary Griffith Warner, Velma Bush Hardman and Madge Bush Snyder; two brothers, Robert and Franklin Bush; and a sister-in-law, Mary Shanklin Peter.

Mrs. Shanklin was the last surviving member of her immediate family and had been a resident of Beckley since 1932.

Survivors include her brother-in-law, Dr. Beverly K. Peter of Beckley; three sisters-in-law, Velma Shanklin of Roanoke, Va., Ruth Shader of Richmond, Va., and Betty Walters and her husband, Jay, of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Beckley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. J. Malcolm Brownlee officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, WV 25801, in memory of Flora "Gennie" Shanklin.

Ophia R. Toney

Ophia R. Short Toney, 95, of Prosperity, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following an extended illness.

Born March 9, 1908, at Prosperity, she was the daughter of the late Dudley and Rose Kidd Short.

Mrs. Toney was a homemaker and an active member of the Prosperity Extension Homemakers Club, the Prosperous Hills Garden Club and community affairs. She was of the Protestant faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Toney, on June 14, 1986; and a brother, George Short.

Survivors include a sister, Ann Short Lilly and husband, Harold, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three daughters, Elizabeth Thompson of Jupiter, Fla., Peggy Floyd of Beckley and Frances Watley and husband, William, of Little River, S.C.; five grandchildren, Toney Floyd and wife, Mona, of Beckley, Joe Williams and wife, Pam, of MacArthur, John Williams of Beckley, Mary Fike and husband, Randy, of Tequesta, Fla., and Cynthia Fagon and husband, Larry, of Jupiter; six great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Melissa Williams of Mac-Arthur, Graham Floyd of Beckley, Troy and Ian Fike of Tequesta and Nicholas Player of Jupiter; a nephew, J. Robert Lilly and wife, Patty, of Fort Mitchell, Ky.; and a niece, Rebecca Berry and husband, Da-vid, of Knoxville, Tenn.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Minister Fred Dinkler officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

The family will receive friends noon until time of service today at the funeral chapel.

Pallbearers will be Cleve Brewer, Pete Tolliver, Lewis Toney, Jack Roop, Bill Tyree and Carl Stewart.

Ida Cora Bever

CRAIGSVILLE - Ida Cora Bever, 88, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in Summersville Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. Bever was a member of Chestnut Flat United Methodist Church, Crupperneck Road, Craigsville. She was a resident of Nicholas County Health Care Center since 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Dale and wife, Juanita Bever, of Canvas and Dennis Bever of Craigsville; a daughter, Becky Bragg of Richwood; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with the Revs. Robert Dick and Richard Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Russell cemetery, Crupperneck Road, Craigsville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles Lee Blake Sr.

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Charles Lee Blake Sr., 52, formerly of Beckley and Mount Hope, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd., Kannapolis. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Seldon P. Clemons

Seldon P. Clemons, 92, of Helen, died Wednesday, June 10, 2003, following a short illness.

Born Sept. 27, 1910, in Hazard, Ky., he was the son of the late Alvin and Stella Manning Clemons.

Mr. Clemons was a retired coal miner. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Mountain Lodge No. 156, Admiral Chapter 50, Bluefield Command No. 19 and Beni Kedem Temple, Charleston.

Mr. Clemons was preceded in death by four brothers, Forrest, Clifford, James and Alvin Clemons; and two sisters, Hattie Meadow and Oletta Cook.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ethel Bowles Clemons; a daughter, Barbara Martinez and her husband, Raymond, of Fort Worth, Texas; two grandchildren, Shane Robinson of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Karen Robinson of Raleigh, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Leslie, Tyler and Cayden Robinson.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Sophia, with the Revs. Connie Bowles and Danny Bowles officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Masonic graveside services will be conducted by members of Mountain Lodge No. 156, who will also serve as pallbearers.

Ronald 'Ron' Copeland Sr.

Ronald Lee "Ron" Copeland Sr., 58, of 708 Ragland Road, Beckley, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Raleigh General Hospital following an apparent heart attack.

Born July 1, 1944, at McAlpin, he was the son of Mildred Kirby Brooks of Rogersville, Tenn., and the late Harold Lee Copeland Sr.

Mr. Copeland was employed by Weatherby Processing at Slaughter Creek in Kanawha County as an electrician. He was a member of the Beckley model airplane club.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Ondo Copeland; two sons, Lee Copeland and Richard Copeland, both at home; two daughters, Sherry Copeland of Beckley and Melissa Monk and husband, Weston, of Princeton; four brothers, Gary Brooks of Bulls Gap, Tenn., Wendall Copeland of Charlotte, N.C., Keith Copeland of Keystone Heights, Fla., and H. Lee Copeland of Keystone Heights; three sisters, Ann Funderburg of Fayetteville, Ark., Orma "Sissy" Bowie of Greenwood, S.C., and Beverly Brooks of Rogersville; a stepbrother, Tommy Brooks of Greenwood; and three stepsisters, Bonnie Palmer of South Carolina, Betty Long of Virginia and Darlene Owens of Broken Arrow, Okla.

Graveside rites and burial will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Grandview cemetery with the Rev. Dwayne Hite officiating.

Friends may call 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.

Co-workers will serve as pallbearers.

The family respectfully requests that flowers be omitted.
