Robert Lee Curtis

HIGHLAND SPRINGS, Va. - Robert Lee Curtis, 60, of 114 N. Elm Ave., formerly of Hinton, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond, Va., following a short illness.

Born Sept. 21, 1942, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Connye Clifton and Ruth Irene Bailey Curtis.

Mr. Curtis retied as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service after 29 years of service. He was a member of New Bridge Baptist Church, Highland Springs.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Hite Curtis on Nov. 21, 2000.

Survivors include a son, Daniel Curtis of Highland Springs; and a daughter, Beverly Bruce and husband, Chip, of Sandston, Va.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church, Hinton, with Pastor Grover Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens, Hinton.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Pivont Funeral Home, Hinton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Beulah L. Holliday

ANSTED - Beulah L. Holliday, 68, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Ansted. Friends may call noon until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Luther M. Mann

NORFOLK, Va. - Luther Malcolm Mann, 79, formerly of Alderson, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at his home in Norfolk, Va., following a short illness.

Born July 24, 1923, in Alderson, he was the son of the late Luther Hinton "Lute" Mann and Tena Cirilla Morgan Mann.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Hall Mann; two brothers, Curtis Mann and Otho Karl Mann; and three sisters, Carmen Fawcett, Nellie Disharoon and Patricia Spence.

Mr. Mann graduated from Alderson High School and was the owner and operator of Mac's Snack Shack in Alderson for 10 years.

He lived in Alderson until he was 30 years old. He married Frances Hall on May 18, 1952, and they moved to Norfolk in 1954.

Mr. Mann was a retired machinist, having retired from civil service duty with the Navy after 24 years of service. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Norfolk.

Survivors include four children, Darrell L. Mann, Ronald H. Mann, Tena V. Moran and Anita E. Tapia; a brother, Robert M. Mann; a sister, Rita N. Brown; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Service was 2 p.m. Thursday at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Norfolk.

Graveside service and burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Alderson cemetery with the Rev. Alvie Edwards officiating.

John A. Ball Jr.

MULLENS — John A. Ball Jr., 79, of Mullens, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following a long illness.

Born July 30, 1927, at Mullens, he was the son of the late John A. Ball Sr. and Mary Gladys Humphreys Ball.

Mr. Ball was a retired U.S. Postal Service employee, retiring as postmaster of the Mullens Post Office with 35 years of service. He was a member of Highland Avenue Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Mullens. In his leisure he was an avid hunter. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James E. Ball, Glenn H. Ball and William T. Ball; and a sister, Bernese Woods.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 44 years, Faye D. French Hall; a daughter, Kimberly Susan Williams and her husband, Jeff, of Mount Hope; a son, John A. Ball III and his wife, Melissa, of Griffin, Ga.; a sister, Lillian Farley and her husband, Don, of Princeton; and four grandchildren, Allyson, John, IV, Zachary and Noah.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with the Rev. Gary Williams and the Rev. Doug Sandy officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Park, Hinton.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Harry Camper

Harry Greene Camper Jr., 83, died on Feb. 3, 2007, in the Doug and Lucy Bowers Hospice House, Beckley. Born Jan. 22, 1924, he was the son of the late Dr. Harry Greene Camper Sr., a pioneer coalfield physician, and Lena Harrell Camper of Welch. He resided in Welch most of his life and retired to Glade Springs, Daniels.

Attending Kentucky Military Institute, he received a graduate degree in 1941 and a post-graduate degree in 1942. He completed Officers Candidate School with a 2nd lieutenant commission in April 1943. While in the United States Army, he served with the 43rd Infantry Division in the Philippines and with the 1st Calvary Division in Japan. Retiring in December 1946 with the rank of captain, he held the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.

His educational background included attending the University of Richmond, Richmond, Va., and Centre College, Danville, Ky. In the fall of 1949, he entered Washington and Lee Law School, Lexington, Va. He was a member of the Washington and Lee Law Review and became a member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. Upon graduation, he returned to Welch to enter the general practice of law. He was a member of the West Virginia State Bar, the Virginia State Bar, the American Trial Lawyers Association and the West Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. He continued to practice in both federal and state jurisdictions for over 50 years.

As a public servant, he became United States Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia. Appointed in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, he served until his resignation in 1964. He was elected to several terms as prosecuting attorney of McDowell County. He was also elected to the County Commission of McDowell County and to the McDowell County Board of Education. He was a former Alcohol Beverage Commissioner for the state of West Virginia.

His extensive civic involvement included membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Welch Lions Club, the American Legion, the Moose Club, Forty/Eight, the Masons and the Shriners. He was statewide president of the West Virginia Jaycees. He served many years on the Board of Directors of McDowell County National Bank. Having a lifetime interest in sports, he maintained a share in the Welch miners baseball club. He was a collegiate football official.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Bankhead Camper, formerly of Paris, Texas, and presently residing at Glade Springs. He is also survived by his children, Dr. Harry G. Camper III and his wife, Janotta, of Harrisonburg, Va., Linda Kay Smith and her husband, Dan, of Daniels and Mary Ann Hardison and her husband, Richard, of Charles-ton. Grandchildren are Richard E. Hardison Jr. of Charles-ton, Andrew Camper Smith of Morgantown, Heather Camper of Harrisonburg, John Bankhead Hardison of Charleston and Harry G. Camper IV and Luke Camper, both of Harrisonburg.

Family interment service was Feb. 6 at Sherwood Burial Park, Sherwood Abby, Salem, Va.

Memorial donations may be made to the Doug and Lucy Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Lane, Beckley, WV 25801.

Timothy Roy Finney

Timothy Roy Finney, 48, of Crab Orchard, passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, following a long illness.

Born March 23, 1958, in McDowell County, he was the son of Margar-et Vaughn Finney of Saulsville and the late Roy W. Fin-ney.

Mr. Fin-ney was a coal miner. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, football games, reading his Bible and being with family and friends.

In addition to his mother, survivors include a son, Wesley Finney of Crab Orchard; a daughter, Cassandra Finney of Crab Orchard; two brothers, Terry Finney and his wife, Doranna, of Bearhole Road and Daniel Finney and his wife, Paula, of Pineville; four sisters, Linda Blankenship and her husband, Harlen, of Indian Creek, Peggy Flanagan and her husband, Larry, of Idaho, Shirley Finney and her husband, Butch Stone, of Cabin Creek and Janet Rose of Princeton; a granddaughter, Haley Shea Finney; several nieces and nephews; and children he loved as his own, Shelly and Jeff Scarbro and their children, Hannah, Autam, Abby and Dalton, Chad and Brittany Henderson, Jennifer Henderson, and Clint Henderson.

Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Mervin Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Loretta Faye Ledford Gandy

GLEN FORK — Loretta Faye Ledford Gandy, 57, of Glen Fork, passed away Friday, Feb. 16, 2007.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Evans Memorial Cha-pel, Oceana. Friends may call noon until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Evans Funeral Home, Oceana, is serving the family.

Easter Gooslin

Easter Gooslin, 86, of Harper, passed away Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007. Born April 4, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Ida Cook Ferrell.

Easter enjoyed raising flowers, playing the organ and cooking. Easter lov-ed her family and enjoyed taking care of everyone.

In addition to her parents, Easter was preceded in death by daughters, Betty Jean and Mary Edith; and son, Charles Ollie.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 69 years, Charlie Gooslin; daughters Genevia McRorie and husband, John, of Hazelhaurst, Ga., Minnie Evans of Elyria, Ohio, Barbara Prunest of Mount Hope and Linda Fraley and husband, George, of McCarr, Ky.; sons, Charles D. Gooslin of Harper and Jackie Gooslin and wife, Betty, of Pemberton; special grandson, Fulton Meadows Jr. and wife, Katrina, of Surveyor; 14 other grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a host of other family and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Orville Setliff officiating.

Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Baxter ‘Wayne’ Griffith

SPARTA, Tenn. — Baxter Wayne Griffith “Wayne,” 58, of Sparta and White Sulphur Springs, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 13, 2007, in Sparta as a result of an automobile accident.

Wayne was born Aug. 26, 1948, up Tuckahoe Road in White Sulphur Springs, and was the eldest child born to Curtis and Lucille Allen Griffith. His paternal grandparents were Bernard and Ada Lawhorn Griffith and maternal grandparents were Will and Ada Church Allen. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bernard William Griffith, and two infant siblings, James and Donna Griffith.

Having worked many years in the construction industry in Geneva, Ohio, Wayne was a retired member of Laborers Local 496. More recently he and his wife operated a restaurant and catering business in Crossville and Sparta.

Wayne was raised in the Pentecostal Holiness Church on Ingleside Avenue, White Sulphur Springs. He was always proud of his roots in West Virginia and often looked forward to coming back home to “Almost Heaven.” Along with his dad and brothers, he was a caddy at The Greenbrier hotel in his teen years. He later became an avid golfer.

Those left to mourn and cherish him include his wife, Michelle Agritta Griffith and her son, Joshua Krause, both of Sparta; father-in-law, Jack Shreves of Sparta; two daughters, Michelle Griffith and Nicole Griffith, both of Clarksburg; two granddaughters, Mariah Jo Griffith and Sierra Sue Griffith, also of Clarksburg; a son, James Curtis Griffith of Hammond, Ind.; four sisters, Betty B. Griffith-Craft, Linda L. Griffith, Sandra J. Griffith and Marguerite A. Griffith, all of White Sulphur Springs; three brothers, Baxter C. Griffith Jr. and Larry L. Griffith, both of White Sulphur Springs, and Harvey P. Griffith of Covington, Va.; an uncle, William Wyatt Allen of White Sulphur Springs; 29 nephews and nieces; and numerous cousins.

After service Friday in Sparta, Wayne’s body was brought back to his hometown in White Sulphur Springs. A wake and visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Shanklin Funeral Home. A song, scripture reading and prayer will be led by Wayne’s niece, Debbie Griffith-Depriest, and his nephew, Anthony Griffith.

Final service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Pentecostal Church, Ingleside Avenue, with Pastor Gene Sizemore officiating.

Interment will follow at Hillcrest cemetery with the release of white flights concluding the graveside service.

Pallbearers will be Alfonso Calhoun, Robbie Black, Will-iam Griffith, Jason Griffith, Bernard Mines, Andy Griffith, Anthony Griffith and Joshua Maddy.

Family and friends may call any time at the home of his sister, Mrs. Betty B. Griffith-Craft, on Big Draft Road in White Sulphur Springs.

Final arrangements have been entrusted to Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, and Thurman Funeral Home, Sparta.

Irene Hodge

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — Irene Hodge, 82, of Pembroke Pines, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at Memorial West Hospital in Pembroke Pines.

Born May 31, 1924, at Eunice, she was the daughter of the late Jackson Spears and Julia Weaver Spears.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Carla Bowling and her husband, Ronald, and Debra Schollenberger and her husband, Richard; grandchildren, John and Kelly Bowling, Lee Eckert and his wife, Ashley, Denise McGowan, Scott Bowling, and Tony and Nicole Schollenberger; brothers-in-law, Charles Hodge and his wife, Rozena, and Norman Hodge and wife, Violet; and a sister-in-law, Joann Hodge.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and where service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Wayne Peters officiating. Interment will be in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

SUMMERSVILLE — Harry D. Lynch, 67, of Summersville, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at White Funeral Home, Summersville. There will be no visitation.
