Sylvia Sydney 'Butch' Niday

BARRETT - Sylvia Sydney "Butch" Niday, 64, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 11, 2003, following a short illness.

Born Aug. 21, 1938, at Glen White, she was the daughter of the late Sydney Johnson and Willie Marie Bonds.

She was also preceded in death by her son, George Burke "Punkin" Niday III.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a member of Barrett Nazarene Church.

She is survived by her husband, George Niday; a daughter, Debra Brown and husband, Chris, of Fuquay Varina, N.C.; a son, Rodney Niday and wife, Linda, of Barrett; sisters, Frances Farley of Coal City, Sue Howerton of Riverdale, Md., Nancy Soltes of Richmond, Va., and Peggy Meadows of Princewick; two brothers, Bobby Bonds of Sophia and Michael Bonds of Oak Hill; and three grandchildren, Justin, Allison and Baylee Niday.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with the Revs. Dan Williams and Scotty Elswick officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Betty F. Phillips

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Betty Frances Phillips, 63, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at a North Carolina hospital.

Born July 4, 1939, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Verblena Dorothy King.

Mrs. Phillips was employed at Brookridge Retirement Community Center.

She attended the Raleigh County public schools and was a graduate of Stratton High School.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Phillips Sr.

Survivors include three children, Ralph Phillips Jr. of Winston-Salem, Debra Phillips of Winston-Salem and Michael Phillips and wife, Dawn, of Beckley; a uncle, Kenneth Walton and wife, Shelia, of Philadelphia, Pa.; two aunts, Amy Law of Beckley and Alma Webb Lee of Pittsburgh, Pa., who were her brother and sisters; six grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church, Beckley, with Elder Richard Law officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the church.

FAYETTEVILLE - Fannie Redman, 95, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the home of her grandson, Paul Wehrle of 315 Bostic Ave., Beckley, following a long illness.

Earl Ray Sams

FORT SPRING - Earl Ray Sams, 92, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at his home after a long illness.

Born Aug. 17, 1910, at Kester, he was the son of the late George Edward and Mrytle Fields Sams.

Mr. Sams had lived in Fort Spring for 43 years and was a member of Greenbrier Valley Church of the Nazarene of Fairlea, where he was the oldest charter member, church board member for many years, Sunday school superintendent, trustee, bus driver and held a local preacher's license. He was employed by the C&O Railroad and was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Massie Sams; four daughters, Lucille Hefner and husband, Chuck, of Huntington, Joyce Wickline of Alderson, Ruth Starr and husband, Richard, of Dunbar and Susie Perry and husband, John H., of Organ Cave; seven sons, Earl "Sonny" Sams and wife, Jackie, of Wildwood, Ga., Barry Sams and wife, Mary, of Warner Robins, Ga., Orville Sams and wife, Sandy, of Alderson, Robert Sams and wife, Dr. Debra C., of Lewisburg, Roger Sams and wife, Beverly, of Alderson, Doug Sams and wife, Bernetta, of Lewisburg and John Sams and wife, Susie, of Fort Spring; grandchildren, Renee Kessinger and husband, Mark, of Huntington, Rusty Hefner of Huntington, Jacqueline Wickline of Alderson, James Wickline and wife, Paula, of White Sulphur Springs, Charles Fillis of California, Joseph Campbell and wife, Kerri, of Morgantown, Earl L. Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, with Dr. Harold Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview cemetery, Ronceverte.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Kathryn White Sarrett

Kathryn White Sarrett, 88, of Edgell Street, Beckley, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in SunBridge Pine Lodge Care and Rehabilitation following a long illness.

Born Oct. 13, 1914, in St. Albans, she was the daughter of the late Hansford Edgar and Mary Louise Barnett White.

Mrs. Sarrett spent her childhood in St. Albans and was a graduate of St. Albans High School. She also graduated from the Kanawha Valley Hospital School of Nursing, received an associate degree from Beckley College and graduated from Bluefield State College. She was a nurse practitioner and was an operating room supervisor at the Beckley Veterans Administration Medical Center, from where she retired with more than 27 years of service. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, a past member of the American Nurses Association, past member of the West Virginia Nurses Association and an honorary member of the Raleigh General Hospital Nurses Alumni.

Mrs. Sarrett was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. She was a 50-year volunteer of the American Red Cross, a past president of the American Cancer Society and the Beckley Business and Professional Woman's Club. She was also a member of the Beckley Quota Club, former member of the Beckley Woman's Club and a 50-year member of the Coal City Order of the Eastern Star, Judea Shrine No. 13, where she served as past worthy matron.

She was married for 61 years to Virgil A. Sarrett, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Carpenter; and two brothers, Ross and Randall White.

Survivors include a brother, Randolph P. White and his wife, Sandra, of St. Albans; a sister-in-law, Gail White of Scott Depot; two nieces, Lavona Lupton and husband, Joe, of Hampton, Va., and Barbara McGirr and husband, Mike, of Kettering, Ohio; three nephews, Hansford "Hank" White and wife, Sandy, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Holly White and wife, Judy, of Winfield and David White and wife, Lynn, of Lugoff, S.C.; five great-nieces and nephews, Jason and Jacob White, Kelli Jones, Lisa Schmidt and Taryn Talbott; five great-great-nephews; two great-great-nieces; a cousin, Yvonne Kincaid and husband, Arthur, of Largo, Fla.; and two companion caregivers, Linda Wood and Peggy Grimmett.

Service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Beckley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Macomb Browslee officiating. Entombment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary, Beckley, and one hour before service time at the church.

Pallbearers will be Roy Bazzarre, Tom Truman, Chuck Tupper and men of the church; honorary pallbearers include Lane Murphy and Ike Mitchell.

In keeping with Mrs. Sarrett's request, memorial gifts may be made to Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, WV 25801.

Flora Genevieve "Gennie" Shanklin, 92, of Beckley, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, in a local care facility of natural causes.

Sidney 'Sid' Thomas

GREENVILLE - Sidney Ballard "Sid" Thomas, 93, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Springfield Center, Lindside.

Born Jan. 26, 1910, at Lindside, he was a son of the late L. Cany and Minnie Ellison Thomas.

Mr. Thomas was a school teacher and farmer. He taught 42 years in Monroe County and retired at the age of 72. Many of those 42 years were spent teaching in one-room schools such as Cashmere, Wikle, Fortner and Lillydale.

He was a charter member of the Greenville Ruritan Club, was assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 159 at Greenville and led many tours through the Greenville caves. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Square Dance Group and Greenville United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife in 1991, Beulah Surface Thomas; four brothers, Audley, Ray, John and Jack Thomas; and a sister, Dorothy Bailey.

Survivors include a son, Joe Thomas and wife, Betty, of Greenville; a daughter, Peggy Wilson and husband, Hughllyn, of Greenville; a brother, Richard Thomas and wife, Lilly, of Lindside; two sisters, Irene Hill and husband, Mark, of Cocoa, Fla., and Mary Katherine Turner and husband, David, of Princeton; five grandchildren, Pam Thomas of Richmond, Va., Jeff Thomas and wife, Lynette, of Gate City, Va., Debra Neel and husband, Jeff, of Greenville, Deana Sharp and husband, Scott, of Sinks Grove and Paula Ellison and husband, Bert, of Greenville; seven great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with Revs. Mike Smith and Patti Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Swope cemetery, Lindside.

Former students will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ophia R. Toney

Ophia R. Short Toney, 95, of Prosperity, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following an extended illness.

Born March 9, 1908, in Prosperity, she was the daughter of the late Dudley and Rose Kidd Short.

Mrs. Toney was a homemaker and was an active member of the Prosperity Extension Homemakers Club, the Prosperous Hill Garden Club and community affairs. She was of the Protestant faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Toney on June 14, 1986; and a brother, George Short.

Survivors include a sister, Ann Short Lilly and husband, Harold, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three daughters, Elizabeth Thompson of Jupiter, Fla., Peggy Floyd of Beckley and Frances Watley and husband, William, of Little River, S.C.; five grandchildren, Toney Floyd and wife, Mona, of Beckley, Joe Williams and wife, Pam, of MacArthur, John Williams of Beckley, Mary Fike and husband, Randy, of Tequesta, Fla., and Cynthia Fagon and husband, Larry of Jupiter; six great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Melissa Williams of MacArthur, Graham Floyd of Beckley, Troy and Ian Fike of Tequesta and Nicholas Player of Jupiter; a nephew, J. Nannie Aliff

Nannie Aliff, 87, of Glen Daniel, formerly of Dry Creek and Marfork, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, June 10, 2003, in the St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, after a long illness.

Born Feb. 14, 1916, at Marfork, a daughter of the late Harrison and Laura Pettry Price.

Mrs. Aliff was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Okey Earl Aliff; a sister, Reba Toney; and two brothers, Norman and Robert Price.

She is survived by six daughters, Kitty Bleck of Strongsville, Ohio, Mattie Riddle and husband, Harry, of Sylvester, Elizabeth Curtis and husband, Steve, of Winston Salem, N.C., Reba Dudgeon, of Eastlake, Ohio, Kathleen Toney and husband, John, of Beckley, and Faustine Potter of New Lexington, Ohio; five sons, Donald Aliff and wife, Gay, of Cleveland, Ohio, Earl Jr. and wife, Monrita, of Glen Daniel, Speed and Gilbert., both of Somerset, Ohio, and Dennis and wife, Dottie, of Pettus; a sister, Mae Dilly of Cochoston, Ohio; two brothers, Herman Price of Pettry Bottom, Naoma, and Hersie Price of Dry Creek; 20 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Armstrong Funeral Home Chapel, Whitesville, with the Revs. Wayne Peters and Roger Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview cemetery, Orgas.

Patricia Sue Ayers

Patricia Sue Ayers, 60, of Harper, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born Aug. 20, 1942, in Raleigh County, the daughter of the late Eugene Keener and Islet Blake Keener.

Mrs. Ayers was a former LPN at BARH and Pinecrest Hospital, she was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God and lived in Raleigh County all of her life.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Denzil Keener and Raymond Keener.

Survivors include her husband, Gilmer Ayers; a son, Gilmer Adrian Ayers of Harper; two daughters, Mollie Ayers of Harper and Melanie Hinzman and husband, David of Beckley; three stepchildren, Charles Ray Ayers, Randall Lee Ayers, and Lisa Ayers, all of North Carolina; a brother, Carson Keener and wife, Sue of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Leva Valentine of Bradley; 11 grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Patricia Keener of California and Shirley Keener of Beckley.

Service will be 1 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with the Revs. Shawn Harpel and Kenneth Ayers officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove cemetery at Oak Grove.
