Mark Chapter 5 verse 36, “Be not afraid — only believe.” Charlie Wade Manning, 54, of 1610 Maxwell Hill Road, Beckley, went peacefully home on Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at the Bowers Hospice House after a wonderful miracle year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born Jan. 26, 1954, at Glen Rogers, he was the son of the late Robert Manning and Maxine Hall Manning.
Charlie was a wonderful loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a coal miner, machinist and woodworker, being last employed by Allegheny Restoration and Builders Inc. Charlie was an inspiration to the ones who knew him. He loved fishing, working in his woodshop and gardening.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Carsel Manning, in January 2001.
Those left to celebrate his life include his wife and best friend whom he loved so much, Emma “Jeannie” McMillion Manning; they had 35 wonderful years together; a son, Michael and wife, Amanda, of Shady Spring; a daughter, Gina Manning Kelley of Beckley; three grandchildren whom he dearly loved, Joshua and Logan Manning and Xana Kelley; three sisters, Gloria Nadine Page and husband, Randy, of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Darlene Beckett and husband, Larry, of Beckley and Marlene Claypool and husband, Junior, of Shady Spring; a special aunt, Verna Brown of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to thank Dr. Khanna and the loving staff of Raleigh Regional Cancer Center for their special care. Also we would like to thank friends and family, churches and Allegheny Restoration for their support this past year.
Abiding by Charlie’s wishes, his body will be cremated. There will be a celebration of his life and spirit at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 24, at Mount Hope First Church of God (behind the Gino’s and Mountaineer Mart on Michigan Avenue).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Bowers Hospice House. Charlie would want everyone to know that miracles do happen; only believe.

Doff Denzil Massey
Doff Denzil Massey, 63, of Fairdale, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.
Born at Eccles on Nov. 14, 1943, he was the son of the late Ralph and Opal Rickman Massey.
He had spent his childhood at Glen Rogers, and had lived most of his adult life at Fairdale.
Mr. Massey was preceded in death by a brother, R.J. Massey, and an infant brother, Gerald Massey.
Surviving are his wife, Flossie Collins Massey; two daughters, Marie Holly Acord and husband, Brian, of Beckley and Iris Nicole Hall and husband, Nathan, of Boise, Idaho; stepchildren, W.C. Brewster and wife, Donnia, of Piney View and Anna Marie Allen of Beckley; two brothers, Bobby Massey of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jerry Massey of Peru, Ind.; five sisters, Patty Darnell of Coal City, Linda Abughannam of Keystone Heights, Fla., Pamela Massey of Hinton, Shirley Cucinotta of Elmont, N.Y., and Wanda Davidson of Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren, Kaden Taylor Hall, Logan Carter Hall, Jordon Skyler Hall, and Mandi Nicole Hall; and three step grandchildren, Cody and Ashley Brewster and Seth McVey.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Mark Schrade officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley

Anthony Scott McAlpine
Anthony Scott McAlpine, 31, of Princewick, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007.
He was born Dec. 18, 1975, in Beckley, the son of the Rev. Barney McAlpine of Princewick and Juanita Hylton McAlpine of Princewick.
He was a 1994 graduate of Independence High School at Coal City and was a former telemarketer for Telespectrum.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Hazel McAlpine and Albert and Lennie Hylton.
Other survivors besides his parents include a brother, Kevin McAlpine of Bradley; and a nephew, Hunter James McAlpine. He will be remembered by a host of relatives and friends.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 24, at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor F.D. Sexton officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James W. Morris
VICTOR — James W. Morris, 72, passed away Friday, June 22, 2007, following a long illness.
James was born Nov. 27, 1934, at Jodie, a son of the late Lemon D. Morris and Beulah E. Crouse Morris.
Mr. Morris was a member of Victor United Methodist Church. He was previously employed at Cedar Coal Co. and Restlawn Memory Gardens.
Survivors include two sons, David Morris of Raleigh, N.C., and William Morris of Victor; two sisters, Janet Dorey of Milton and Maxine Padgett of Hayesville, N.C.; a brother, Emil Morris of Grafton, Ohio; granddaughters, Bobbie Jo and husband, Gary Cole Jr., Kandi and husband, Eric Orozco, and Melinda and husband, Eric Underwood; and great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Austin Tyree, Chryssa Cole and Amy Cole, Nate Orozco, Justin Underwood and Joshua Underwood.
Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 25, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted. Burial will follow in Westlake cemetery, Ansted.

Carl Lewis Neff
MILLVILLE, Ky. — Carl Lewis Neff, 94, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2007.
Mr. Neff was born July 12, 1912 in Layland, and was the son of the late Mary Jane and Robert Tilden Neff.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Reeda Neff; a daughter, Donita Lodmell of Millville; a son, Donald Neff and his wife, Pat, of Springfield, Va., a brother, Joe Neff of Kimbolton, Ohio; a sister, Velma Bostic of Oak Hill; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and a son-in-law.
Carl graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, Concord College, Athens, George Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn., and taught math in West Virginia at Shady Spring and then Sophia High Schools where he later became the principal. Having also graduated from the Armored Officers Candidate School in Fort Knox, Ky., he served in World War II and retired as a major from the active Reserves. He was a member of the Woodrow Wilson Football Hall of Fame, a 35-year member of the Sophia Lions Club and served as president and secretary of the Raleigh County Education Association.
Carl attended Sophia United Methodist Church and Versailles United Methodist Church.
Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 25, at Blackburn and Ward Funeral Home, Versailles, Ky., with the Revs. Rebecca Peterson and Mike Lehman officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.
Visitation will be noon until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Ila E. Shupe
Ila E. Shupe, 89, of 108 Winger Ave., Beckley, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at her home following a short illness.
Born at Matoaka, on April 23, 1918, she was the daughter of the late James and Anna Hylton.
She was a homemaker and had lived most of her life in Beckley.
Mrs. Shupe was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney Shupe; four sons, Lloyd, Robert, Larry and Kelly Thomas; four sisters, Jan Huffman, Pansy Sisk, Lucille Sutphen and Beulah Fann; and a brother, Foster Hylton.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Thomas of Beckley; two sisters, Joyce Thompson of Mullens and Jean Edwards of Midway; five grandchildren, Cheryl Thomas, Jeffrey Thomas, Diane Mitchem, Cecilia Thomas and Therese Parker; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Lynch of Beckley; seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Allan Gallimore officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Debra Jarrell Williams
On Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, Debra Jarrell Williams of Palm Harbor, Florida, formerly of Beckley, became one of God’s special angels at her home in Palm Harbor. She was 54 years of age.
Born September 20, 1952, Debra was the youngest of three children born to J.T. and Rosebelle Tabor Jarrell Jr. of New Port Richey, Florida, formerly of Beckley.
Known affectionately as “Debbie,” Debra spent her childhood on Harper Road. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1970, she attended Marshall University where she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and graduated with a BS Degree. When growing up, she and her family were members of First Christian Church, Court House Square. She was a lifetime member of the Single Action Shooting Society.
A resident of Palm Harbor since 1992, Debra was a former resident of Louisville, Kentucky. She was a division manager for Mabelline Cosmetics and a broker for Crystallite for the state of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, J.T. and Gladys Jarrell Sr., of Beckley and her maternal grandparents, Charles and Arizona Tabor of Naoma and her uncle Jacob (Jake) Jarrell of Beckley.
In addition to being the beloved daughter of J.T. and Rosebelle, Debra was the loving wife of Paul Williams, special mother to Lauren Christine Williams of Amelia Island, Fla.; dear sister to James (Tom) Jarrell III and his wife Susan of New Port Richey; and Phillip Jarrell and his wife Judy of Beckley; nephews and nieces, Todd Cornett and his wife Rachel of Beckley, Phillip Tabor (Tab) Jarrell of Cary, N.C., Kerri Beth Jarrell, a student at WVU, Kim Keziah and her husband Larry of Monroe, N.C.; grand niece and nephews, Kristin Booth, Ethan Keziah, Tristan and Todd Cornett II.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Dewey Lowe officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.
Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be Tab Jarrell, Todd Cornett, Rick Jarrell, Gary Dale Tabor, Dr. Robert Short and Chip Tabor.
