Thelma Louise Boothe Hoy Williams

PETERSTOWN — Thelma Louise Boothe Hoy Williams, 85, of Peterstown, passed away Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jane Gatens Vaughan

RED HOUSE — Jane Gatens Vaughan, 70, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at home.

Jane was a graduate of Poca High School and St. Mary’s School of Nursing. Jane was retired vice president of Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens and employee of Gatens-Harding Funeral Home.

Jane previously served on the Board of Trustees at Putnam General Hospital and the Parish Council at St. Patrick Catholic Church. She was a member of the Rebecca Rose Lodge in Poca and St. Patrick Catholic Church in Bancroft.

In 2005 Jane was the recipient of the Heart of Teal Award for her courageous leadership.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Michael Gatens Sr.; son, Thomas Lee Vaughan Jr.; and brother, Joseph Michael Gatens Jr.

She is survived by her mother, Norma Lee Gatens of Poca; children, Norma and husband, Stanley Meadows, of Hurricane, Dr. Joseph Vaughan and wife, Dina, of Lewisburg and Mary and husband, Thomas Mills, of Winfield; eight grandchildren, Bridget Adkins, Aimee Hartley, Jennifer Vaughan, Thomas Lee Vaughan III, Luke Mills, Hannah Mills, Kara Vaughan and Evan Vaughan; and three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Kelly Jane and Elizabeth.

Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Bill Pedro officiating. Entombment will follow in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to National Ovarian Cancer Collation Designated for Research, 500 N.E. Spanish Road Blvd., Suite 8, Boca Raton, FL 33431, 1-888-OVARIAN, or Kanawha Hospice, 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064.

Mary Patty Kees

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Mary Patty Kees, 71, formerly of Oak Hill, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003.

Mrs. Kees was the daughter of the late Charles Wade and Miriam A. Stover.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlan Kees; a son, Danny Joe Kees and two brothers, Wade and William Stover.

She is survived by her daughters, Deborah E. Dotson and family of Chester, Va. and Jane E. Lopinsky and family of Lynchburg, Va. and her son, Roy Michael Kees and family of Oak Hill; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Kay Viscardi of Colorado, Barbara Welch of Virginia and Margaret Lowry of Kentucky.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Tonya Shupe officiating, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

John B. Kessler

HICO - John Bernard Kessler, 87, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the home of his son following a short illness.

Born Sept. 27, 1915, he was the last surviving child of the late William Terrance and Maggie Mae Keenan Kessler.

Mr. Kessler attended the Kesler Presbyterian Church, Sunday Road Baptist Church, and the Ansted Baptist Church and was a retired employee of the Fayette County Board of Education, where he worked for 28 years as a school bus driver. He enjoyed playing music, singing, and farming.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Mae Kessler; four brothers, William Harold, Walter Jennings, Seth Edward, and Bert; and two sisters, Mary Geneva Burdette and Hilda Martha Peterson.

Survivors include three sons, Stanley Kessler and wife, Sharon of Yakina, Wash., Johnny Kessler and wife Pat of Atlanta, Ga. and Thomas Kessler and wife, Linda of Fayetteville; a daughter, Shirley Keffer and husband, Jimmy of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be noon Friday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Ansted, with Tracy Moss officiating. Interment will follow in Restlawn cemetery.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of the services Friday at the funeral home.

Mary K. Meadows, 86, of Beaver, was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at her home with loved ones surrounding her.

Lula Hewlett Parsons

NEWPORT, N.C. - Lula Hewlett Parsons, 55, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.

Mrs. Parsons attended the Community Baptist Church of Newport.

She is survived by her husband, Doug Parsons; a daughter, Donna Renee Hewlett of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Timothy Wayne Hewlett and James Chester Hewlett, both of Raleigh, N.C.; a stepson, Thomas Warren Parsons of Newport, N.C.; a sister, Pearl Treadway of West Virginia; and a granddaughter, Faith McKenna Hewlett.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Munden Funeral Chapel, Morehead City, N.C., with the Rev. Wayne Best and Dr. Rev. Robert Joyner officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

RIDGEWAY, Va. - Kevin Eric Shrewsbury, 27, died Monday, June 9, 2003.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Burns-Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Edith Sizemore, 83, of Lyburn, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at her residence following a long illness.

LEWISBURG - Mrs. R.N. Vaughan, of Lewisburg, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Rosewood cemetery, Lewisburg. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at The Old Stone Presbyterian Church.

There will be no visitation.

Donations of sympathy may be made to The Old Stone Presbyterian Church or to Greenbrier Valley Hospice.

Frances C. Walker

MOUNT HOPE - Frances Carter Walker, 97, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Hidden Valley Nursing Home, Oak Hill, following a short illness.

Born Feb. 3, 1906, at Harvey, she was the daughter of the late R.H. and Della Moore Carter.

Mrs. Walker was a retired elementary school teacher. She graduated from Mount Hope High School where she played basketball and from Marshall College where she was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority.

Mrs. Walker was a teacher at Mount Hope Elementary School for many years.

She was an active member of the Mount Hope Baptist Temple and the Mount Hope community. Her strength and energy were an inspiration to all who knew her. She loved her family, friends, and neighbors, her home, flowers and the outdoors.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew L. "Bab" Walker; five brothers, Robert M., Eugene S. "Gene,", William C. "Pete", John Marshall "Marshall," and Charles A. Carter; and a sister, Ruth.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane Walker Hunter of Charlotte, N.C.; a granddaughter, Ashley Carter Hunter of Ketchum, Idaho; a brother, David L. Carter of High Point, N.C.; and also by many nieces, nephews and special friends.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope Baptist Temple, Mount Hope, with the Rev. David McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mount Hope Baptist Temple, 406 Main St., Mount Hope, WV or to the New River Health Association, Rt. 1, Box 615A, Scarbro, WV 25917.

CHAPMANVILLE - Manuel Adkins, 72, formerly of Robinette, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003.

Patricia Sue Ayers

Patricia Sue Ayers, 60, of Harper, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born Aug. 20, 1942, in Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late Eugene Keener and Islet Blake Keener.

Mrs. Ayers was a former LPN at BARH and Pinecrest Hospital, she was a member of Calvary Assembly of God and lived in Raleigh County all of her life.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Denzil Keener and Raymond Keener.

Survivors include her husband, Gilmer Ayers; a son, Gilmer Adrian Ayers of Harper; two daughters, Mollie Ayers of Harper and Melanie Hinzman and husband, David, of Beckley; three stepchildren, Charles Ray Ayers, Randall Lee Ayers and Lisa Ayers, all of North Carolina; a brother, Carson Keener and wife, Sue, of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Leva Valentine of Bradley; 11 grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Patricia Keener of California and Shirley Keener of Beckley.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Revs. Shawn Harpel and Kenneth Ayers officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Earlene Cooper

Earlene Cooper, 75, of Coal City, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at her home following a long illness.

Born Aug. 1, 1928, in Davison, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Gaston Hargis and Audie Lowhorn Hargis.

Mrs. Cooper was a former cook for the Raleigh County Board of Education at Stoco Junior High School.

She had attended Lillybrook Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Gene Cooper; four sons, James "Butch" Cooper and wife, Joetta, of Coal City, John Cooper of Coal City, Gary Cooper and wife, Ersie, of Danese and Gene Cooper Jr. and wife, Kim, of Hagerstown, Md.; a daughter, Patricia Sanger and husband, Frank, of Midway; a brother, J.L. Hargis of Stanaford; four sisters, Alice Adkins of Harper, Allie Bowers of Coal City, Christine Farley of Horse Creek and Vella Bowers of Virginia; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Duane Pease officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Thursday at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
