Joseph E. Johnson Sr.

LEWISBURG - Joseph E. Johnson Sr., 76, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, after a long illness.

Born Dec. 15, 1926, at Cunard, he was the son of the late Dodridge Sydnor and Lucy Evans Johnson.

He was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters, James W., Charles, Dodridge S. Jr., Frances Hey, Betty Craddock and Martha Ruth Martin.

Mr. Johnson retired from USDA as a federal meat inspector. He was a veteran of World War II and a former member of the Air National Guard.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Fairlea.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Violet Stover; three sons, Joseph E. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Sylvia, of Frankford, James W. Johnson and his wife, Vicky, of Cross Lanes and Jesse Stover Johnson of Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Jolene Johnson, Ryane Johnson, Jeanene Johnson, Kristin and Ashley Johnson.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at McCraw Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Mark Billington officiating.

Friends may call 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The body was cremated.

Thomas Michael 'Mike' Martin

Thomas Michael "Mike" Martin, 55, died of respiratory failure following a short and sudden illness Friday, June 6, 2003, in Lexington, Ky., where he made his home for the past two years.

Mike was born June 3, 1948 in Montgomery, the son of the late Thomas H. and Doris Custer Martin. He grew up in Montgomery and Oak Hill, graduating from Collins High School in 1966 before moving with his family to Beckley. He attended West Virginia Institute of Technology. Mike began a successful career in broadcasting while in college and worked at WWNR for his mentors, the late Nick Rahall and Anthony P. "Tony" Gonzalez in the late 1960s and 1970s as one of the "Swingin' Good Guys."

His broadcasting career took him to the Tri-State region, where he worked in announcing, sales, management and eventually as the owner of two radio stations in Ironton, Ohio, his home for nearly 20 years. He returned to Beckley in the 1990s to be closer to his family, and to again work for Mr. Gonzalez and the Rahall family, this time at WTNJ. He concluded his broadcasting career at Southern Communications Corp., where he made many lasting friendships. Mike was forced to retire in the last two years due to painful spinal problems, but did volunteer work for a homeless shelter and an animal rescue group in Lexington.

He enjoyed vintage movies and music, comedy, cars and was a great animal lover. Known for his warm heart, generosity and wonderful sense of humor, Mike also deeply loved his children and family.

His is survived and will be deeply missed by his daughter, Abby Lee Martin of Beckley; his son, Michael Andrew Martin of Columbus, Ohio; his sister, Cindy Martin Worley and her husband, Scott, of Beckley; his former wife and the mother of his children, Debra Dickens of Ironton; and a number of extended family members and friends.

At his request, Mike has been cremated. A memorial service will be held for him at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 S. Kanawha St., with the Rev. Malcolm Brownlee presiding. Immediately following the service, a reception and celebration of Mike's life will be held in the church's Friendship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy may be made in Mike's name to the homeless shelter where he worked, The Hope Center, P.O. Box 6, Lexington, KY 40588.

G. Lynn McCarty

NEOLA - G. Lynn McCarty, 90, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at White Sulphur Springs Family Care Center.

He was a retired truck driver for the West Virginia Department of Highways.

Lynn was born Oct. 9, 1912, at Huntersville, the son of the late Elbert and Bessie Mc-Laughlin McCarty.

In addition to his parents, his first wife, Marie McLaughlin McCarty, his second wife, Hallie Grimes McCarty, sons Granville and Charles McCarty, brother Carl McCarty and sisters Gladys Moore and Geraldine Smith preceded him in death.

Daughters Jane Beverage of Stony Bottom, Linda Ervine of Perry, Ohio, Charlotte Thomas of Frankford and Sandy Circosta of White Sulphur Springs, son E. Brown McCarty of Marietta, Ga., stepdaughters Ma-ry McGraw and Judy Wilfong of Quakertown, Pa., stepson Donald Circosta of Hillsboro, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren survive him.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Dunmore cemetery with the Rev. Robert Mann officiating.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the White Sulphur Springs Rescue Squad.

Larry McMillion

Larry McMillion, 55, of Laurel Terrace, Beckley, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness.

J. Thomas Morgan

RONCEVERTE - J. Tho-mas Morgan, 57, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center after a long battle with cancer.

Mr. Morgan was born Nov. 9, 1945, at Ronceverte, the son of Virginia Mann Morgan of Ronceverte and the late James W. Morgan.

Mr. Morgan was a member and deacon of Mountain View Primitive Baptist Church of Ronceverte, past member and chief of the Ronceverte Volunteer Fire Department, past mayor and council member of Ronceverte and maintenance planner/buyer for 29 years with B.F. Goodrich Inc. in Union.

He was preceded in death by his father, James W. Morgan.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Wickline Morgan, and mother, Virginia Mann Morgan, of Ronceverte; two daughters, Barbara Morgan of Rocky Mount, Va., and Vicki Powell of Henry, Va.; a son, Dwight Morgan of Lexington Park, Md.; a sister, Arlene Bradley of Ronceverte; two brothers, Arnold Morgan of Covington, Va., and Edsel Morgan of Ronceverte; and two grandchildren, Susan and Brandon.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View Primitive Baptist Church, Ronceverte, with Elders Arnold Morgan and James Boothe officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lew-isburg.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Ronceverte.

Pallbearers will be Tony Pensule, Kevin Surbaugh, Randy Morgan, Robert Boothe, David Wickline and Jamie Wickline.

Emmett Guy Sprague

Emmett Guy Sprague, 69, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2003.

He was born March 20, 1934, at White Sulphur Springs.

Mr. Sprague was retired from the VA Hospital. He loved golf, fishing and being outdoors. He also was a member of the Beckley Moose Lodge.

He was also a PFC of the United States Army for three years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Sprague.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Monroe of White Sulphur Springs and Virginia Munsey of Covington, Va.; three brothers, Billy Joe Sprague of Pompano Beach, Fla., Edward "Buck" Sprague of White Sulphur Springs and Frank E. Sprague of Staunton, Va.; his companion, Faye Pettry, her children, and grandchildren, Kiska Rose Pettry and Katie Marie Pettry, whom he loved and treated as his own.

Service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Darrell McNeely officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the funeral home, with services following.

Martha Lea Thompson

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio - Martha Lea Thompson, 81, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in Columbus, Ohio.

Born July 7, 1921, in Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late P.H. and Minnie Holloway Thompson.

Miss. Thompson was a retired nurse anesthesiologist.

She was preceded in death by a twin sister, Mary Crouse; other sisters, Lena Bailey and Lula Light; and four brothers, Lawrence, Edmond, Isaac and Emmett Thompson.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Bernie Jernigan officiating. Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. cemetery, Oak Hill.

Friends may call 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Kathryn A. Wiley

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Kath-ryn A. Wiley, 86, formerly of Beckley, died Monday, June 16, 2003, in Columbus.

Kathleen Geneva Davis Conley

Kathleen Geneva Davis Conley, 79, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at her residence at Westwood Health Care Center following a long battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 15, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Frank Davis and Roxie Stump Davis of Pineville.

Mrs. Conley was an 11-year resident of Mercer County, formerly of Wyoming County. She was retired from the Board of Education, having been a cook for all the area schools. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary where she served as chaplain. She was a lifetime member of Wyoming Methodist Church where she served as treasurer and was a member of the church board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas Conley; a daughter, Roxanna Jane; a brother, Frank Davis; and a sister, Hilda Brooks.

Those left to mourn her loss are her sons, Eddie Conley and Ricky of Princeton and Frankie Sizemore and his wife, Gloria, of Kimball; daughters, Lea Shawn Sizemore and Megan Kathleen Sizemore; two grandsons, Levi Sizemore and Frankie Brown; a great granddaughter, Kaleigh Roxanna; a special niece, Deborah Hatfield of Simons; a special sister-in-law, Mildred Conley of Sandlick; her foster grandchildren, Daren and Missy Porter and their children, Brandon, D.J. and Brian; her loving roommate, Marjorie Bailey of Westwood; and best friend, Clara Tilley of Glover.

Service will be 7 p.m. today at George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home, Princeton, with the Revs. Erica Brooks, Carolyn Scott and Dianna Carter officiating.

Additional service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Wyoming Methodist Church, Pineville, with the Rev. Gerald Roberts officiating.

Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call 6 p.m. to service hour today at Seaver Funeral Home and 11 a.m. until service hour Friday at Wyoming Methodist Church.

Margarette L. Edwards

Margarette L. Wallace Edwards, 88, of Sophia went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, following a long illness.

Stella L. Korff

Stella Louise Korff, 86, of Beckley, died at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2003, at SunBridge Pine Lodge Care Center following a long illness.

Born July 25, 1916, at Sprague, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Suptic and Mary Yarac Suptic.

Mrs. Korff was a homemaker. She had attended United Methodist Temple.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman F. Korff; four brothers, Joseph, John, Mike and Steve; and a sister, Mary.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, and caregivers, Helen Greene of Beckley and Margaret Suptic of Prosperity.

Graveside rites and burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with the Rev. Gerald Kelley officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.
