M. Eileen Childs

Mrs. M. Eileen Childs, 79, of Hurricane died August 14, 2004, at home.

Born September 16, 1924 in New Haven, she was a daughter of the late Okey E. and Laura Hesson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by grandchildren, Kristi Gibson and Chad Gibson.

Surviving: husband, Cecil Childs; son, Marty Childs and wife, Karen, of Kearney, Nebraska; daughter, Tanya Gibson and husband, William, of Hurricane; sister, Mae Reynolds of Pt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Staci Gibson and Chuck Childs; great-grandson, Zachary Childs.

Service was held Monday, August 16, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Bud Lee Hatfield officiating. Burial was in Lone Oak Cemetery, Pt. Pleasant.

Kay C. Hollandsworth

Kay Coalter Hollandsworth, 63, of Liberty died Monday, August 9, 2004, at Charleston Area Medcial Center.

She was a homemaker and a member of Barnett Chapel Community Church, Fisher's Ridge Liberty.

She was preceded in death by her huband, Dexter Hollandsworth, and her parents, Charles Jr. and Kathryn Green Coalter.

Surviving: son, Clint E. Hollandsworth of Liberty; grandchildren, Abagail and Noah Hollandsworth; brothers, Charles Coalter III of California and Dan Coalter of South Carolina.

A memorial service was held Sunday, August 15, 2004 at Barnett Chapel Community Church. Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to National Kidney Foundation of Virginia Inc., 5001 West Borad Street #217, Richmond VA 23230.

Vestie A. Tate

Vestie A. Herdman Tate, 83, of Buffalo died August 13, 2004, at the home of her daughter in Columbus, following a long illness.

She was a homemaker and attended New Hope Church, Robertsburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Tate, daughter, Dollie Tate, two sisters, and parents, Bing and Ethel Stover Herdman.

Surviving: daughtger, Beulah McFarland of Columbus; brothers, Jasper Herdman of Buffalo, Dallas Herdman of North Carolina and William Herdman of Colorado; sisters, Annie Davis of Ohio and Ruby Reisch of Ohio; grandchildren, Jay, Audrey, Deanna, Cindy and Rhonda; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-granchildren.

Service was held Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Foster Walters and Pastor Edgil Bevins officiating. Burial was in Walker Chape. Cemetery, Robertsburg.

Richard L. Weaver

Richard L. Weaver, 60, of Buffalo died Saturday, August 14, 2004, in CAMC General Hospital.

Born July 8, 1944 in Putnam County, he was a son of the late Winifred and Mamie Alice Clagg Weaver.

He had been a boiler operator for FMC in Nitro.

Surviving: wife, Wanda “Dink” Hayes Weaver; sons and daughter-in-law, William “Bill” and Missi Weaver and Richard Weaver, all of Buffalo; brother, Fred Weaver of Buffalo; sister, Diane Gibson of Mansfield, Ohi; grandchildren, Chelsea Weaver, Courtney Weaver and Destiny Huttenstein.

Service was held Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Pt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Denver S. Tucker officiating. Burial was in Craig Cemetery, Arbuckle.

Clifford Paul McCallister

Clifford Paul McCallister, 67, formerly of Milton, passed away Thursday, August 12, 2004, in Paradise Oak Nursing Home, Cloverdale, Ohio. Graveside service was held 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating. He was born October 20,1936, in Logan County, W.Va, son of the late Homer and Allie Dakota Barnett McCallister. He was also preceded in death by one sister and four brothers. He is survived by a sister, Shirley Kinnard, and a brother, Donald McCallister. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Eloise Fuller Johnson

Eloise Fuller Johnson, 89, of Ona went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 11, 2004, at her home. Funeral service were conducted Friday, August 13, 2004, at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Pete Davidson and the Rev. Daniel Beaver officiating. Burial in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock. She was born April 17, 1915, in Lawrence County, Ohio, a daughter of the late Robert E.L. and Delilah Benson Fuller. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Johnson Sr.; two stepsons and one step-daughter-in-law, Gerald and Betty Johnson and Lyle Johnson; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Bernice and Raymond Hicks; and four grandchildren, Mike McDonie, Matthew, David and Kathy Johnson. She was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lowell and Pat Johnson of Ona and Jamie and Cindy Johnson of Richmond, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Royce McDonie of Milton; one stepdaughter-in-law, Bernice “Boo” Johnson of Huntington; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Eska Ross

Eska Ross, 82, of Kenova, formerly of Salt Rock, passed away Monday, August 9, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Friday, August 13, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor James Jobe. Burial in Baylous Cemetery, Salt Rock. She was born March 19, 1922, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late George and Myrtle Adkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ishmael Ross. She is survived by two sons, Gary L. and Brenda Ross of Salt Rock; Robert D. “Bob” Ross and his loving companion, Linda Stewart of Kenova; one brother, Eron “Jerry” Adkins; six grandchildren, Mike, Jack and his wife, Nicole; Bobbie, and his wife, Debra; Troy Scott, and his companion, Amy Welch, Jerrod Ross, and Julie Hobgood; three great grandchildren, Candace, Brittany, and Jacob.

Howard Jack Thacker

Howard Jack Thacker, 79, of Huntington entered into his eternal rest on Monday, August 9, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Friday, August 13, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Finley officiating. Burial in Milton Cemetery. He was born May 14, 1925, in Lawrence County, Ohio, a son of the late John and Ruth Thacker. Jack was devoted to God and family. He was a longtime member of Sunrise Temple Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a caring, compassionate man with a unique sense of humor. Jack always was will to lend a helping hand. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked at Houdaille Industries and retired from Cabell County Board of Education. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joann Adkins Thacker; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jeffery Thacker and Joseph and Winnie Thacker; three grandchildren, Melanie Rouse, Josh Thacker and Jesse Thacker; two great grandchildren, Caleb and Derrian.

Elvin Louis McCallister

Elvin Louis McCallister, 82, of Salt Rock, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. He was born February 1, 1922, a son of the late Lonnie and Luna Lucas McCallister. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Cledith McCallister. He retired from Houdaille Industries and the Cabell County Board of Education. He was a Christian of Baptist faith and he loved bluegrass music where he played the guitar and sang since he was a small boy. He loved and enjoyed life to the fullest and will be missed by everyone. He is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Gloria Jean Clay McCallister; two sons, Randy Elvin and Eddy Gene McCallister, both of Salt Rock; one daughter-in-law, Stacey McCallister of Salt Rock; his beloved granddaughters, Krista and Emily McCallister of Zeeland, Mich.; one step-granddaughter, Katelyn Neumeyer of Salt Rock; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Herman and Ruth McCallister of Milton, Emery and Vada McCallister of Proctorville, Ohio, and Golden and Georgia McCallister of Barboursville; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Vicie Albright of Huntington, Loreda Bias of Barboursville, LaAnna and William Crawford and Evelyn and Edward Frazier, all of Salt Rock; one sister-in-law, Hope McCallister of East Lynn; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends and relatives. Graveside services were held Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock, with James Jobe officiating. Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin, was in charge of arrangements. The family would like to thank everyone for the prayers and all they have done to help.

Lona Frances Bias

Lona Frances Bias, 79, formerly of Milton passed away Sunday, August 8, 2004, in University Hospital Augusta, Ga. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, August 11, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Alan Cole officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born July 11, 1925, in Milton a daughter of the late Asa and Bertie Hensley Cooper. She is also preceded in death by her husband, William Leroy Bias; three brothers, Elbert Cooper, Paul Cooper and Ezra Cooper. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Kay Wells; three grandsons, Patrick and Kim Wells, Chad Wells and Teig and Tam Wells; one granddaughter, Tara Kay and Randy Chavous; two great-grandsons, Christopher and Anna Wells and Venoy Wells; one great-granddaughter, Kayla Marie Wells; one great-great-granddaughter, Lillian Grace Wells; three sisters, Jewell Meadows, Bonnie McCoy and Joyce Wilson.

Michael Wayne Taylor

Michael Wayne Taylor, 43, of Culloden, husband of Betty Rose Taylor, died Saturday, August 7, 2004 at home. Graveside services were conducted Thursday, August 12, 2004 in Culloden Community Cemetery. Private visitation. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Teresa Dale Ferguson Titus

Teresa Dale Ferguson Titus, 52, of Milton, W.Va., died August 8, 2004, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was born on March 17, 1952, in Hazard, Kentucky, daughter of Joanne Ferguson of New Haven and the late John Taylor Ferguson Sr. In addition to her mother, Teresa is survived by her daughter, Shelly Lynn Kuhn of Huntington W.Va.; son, Christopher Scott Titus of Supply, N.C.; daughter, Julianne Nicole Titus of Milton; four grandchildren, Taylor and Nicolas Kuhn and Dominick and Chase Lane; brother, John Taylor (Angie) Ferguson Jr. of New Haven; brother, Glenn Ferguson of Bronston, Ky.; nieces and nephews, Kaley and Karista Ferguson and Luke and Jenna Fergusom A celebration of life memorial service was held Thursday, August 12, 2004, at Anderson Funeral Home, New Haven.

Elmer J. Morris

Elmer J. Morris, 93, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 10, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 12, 2004, at Church in the Valley with the Rev. Jim Franklin officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born August 26, 1910, in Cabell County, W.Va., a son of the late Robert and Tillie J. Cooper Morris. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nina Mildred Chapman Morris; son, James Elmer Morris; daughter, Geneva June DiRosa. He was a member of Church in the Valley, a lifetime member of the NRA and a member of the Milton Masonic Lodge. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and William Champe of Milton and JoAnn and David Carroll of Oakdale, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jack J. and Peggy Morris of Proctorville, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Carl O. Newman

Mr. Carl O. Newman, 95, of Huntington, widower of Alma Beckett Newman, passed away Monday August 9, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 12, 2004, at Chapman's Mortuary with Dr. Terrell Bradley officiating. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. He was born July 18, 1909, in West Virginia, a son of the late Bascom and Gertrude Beckner Newman. He was in the Clerical Department with Huntington Alloys for 31 years. He was a member of Highlawn Baptist Church and was a veteran having served with the U.S. Navy during, World War II. He was an avid sportsman and active in Square Dancing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Newman. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Sue Newman of Barboursville; three grandchildren, Vickie Noble of Virginia, Rick Newman of Proctorville, Ohio and Evan Newman of Chesapeake, Ohio, and a sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Bud Stettar of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Maxine D. Mitchell

Maxine D. Mitchell, 79, of Gallipolis, Ohio, formerly of Buffalo, died Monday, August 2, 2004.

She was born in Buffalo on May 17, 1925 to Lawrence A. and Emma Riffle Mitchell, who preceded her in death. In addition, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Melva Cornell Mitchell.

She was a devout Christian who attended the Church of God in Buffalo, where she was a Sunday school teacher, music director and served in many other capacities. Her church family in Buffalo was very dear to her and remained so even after her move to Gallipolis. Due to failing health, she was never able to regularly attend the Church of God in Gallipolis, but received support from that congregation as well.

She worked at the Buffalo Bank for many years and later retired from Putnam Schools as secretary at Buffalo High School for 17 years.

Surviving: sisters, Nancy (Don) James of Gallipolis and Donna (Carroll) Roberson of Ripley, Mississippi; brothers, Ray (Nellie) Mitchell of Cheshire, Ohio, Lawrence Alvin (Mary) Mitchell and Norman (Bonnie) Mitchell, both of Gallipolis, and Fred (Betty) Mitchell of Lawrenceburg, Georgia; aunt, Genevieve Cranston of Marietta, Ohio; 15 nieces and nephews; 33 great-nieces and great-nephews; one great-great-niece and one great-great-nephew.

Visitation was held Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at the Buffalo Church of God. Service was held at Willis Funeral Home, Gallipolis on Thursday, August 5, 2004, with Pastor Wayne Burch, Pastor Paul Voss and the Rev. Carroll Roberson officiating. Interment was in Ohio Valley Memory Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Church of God or the Building Fund of the First Church of God in Gallipolis.

Lois JoAnne Adams

Lois JoAnne Billups Adams, 67, of Lexington, South Carolina, formerly of Hurricane, died Thursday, July 8, 2004.

She was preceded in death by her father, J. Milford Billups, and her grandparents, Cade and Bessie Sovine, Webb, Ada and Margaret Sovine Billups.

Surviving: husband, Ron Adams; children, Rhonda “Lynn” and Jeff Willis of Columbia, South Carolina, Lorie DeAnn Fields of Fairbanks, Alaska, Mark and Leigh Ann Adams of Orlando, Florida, Joanie and Pat Galligher of Lexington, and Todd Adams of Myrtle Beach; mother, Hazel Virginia Sovine Billups of Hurricane; brother, James C. Billups of Hurricane.

Service was held at Sand Hill Baptist Church, Lexington. Burial was in Sand Hill Baptist Church Memorial Gardens.

Wilmah Faye Duke

Wilmah Faye Duke, 78, of Hurricane died August 1, 2004, at home after a long illness.

She was a member of Main Street Church of Christ. She was a loving mother and dedicated grandmother.

Surviving: her husband of 57 years, Dewey; daughter, Reba Bailey and husband, Jeff, of Hurricane and their son, Todd; son, D.W. Duke and wife, Shirley, of South Carolina and their children, Jennifer Ann, Heather, Annie and A.J., all of South Carolina; sisters, Nina Wright of Ohio and Martha Stewart of Mineral Wells, West Virginia; nephew, Lonnie Duke and his wife, Mary Margaret, of Hurricane; special friends, Montana Reeves, Ann Hall and Nadine Newcomer; a host of many other family and friends.

Service was held Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at Allen Funeral Home Chapel, Hurricane, with Minister Donald Mash and Doug Minton officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

James Larry O'Dell

James Larry “Doc” O'Dell died Saturday, July 31, 2004, in CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long-term illness.

Born August 17, 1944, Jim grew up in Poca and resided for the last 17 years in Summersville. He retired from his father's company, O'Dell and Associates.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Opal O'Dell.

Surviving: his wife of 18 1/2 years, Debbie; children, Jeff O'Dell and Tonya O'Dell Rader; grandchildren, John Casto, Derek O'Dell, Kristine Elliott, Connor O'Dell and Jalee Rader; father, Roy O'Dell; sisters, Shirley Lilly, Emogene Aggurie and Rose Thomas.

Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, was in charge of arrangements
