Geraldine P. Lilly

CORINNE — Geraldine Patrick Lilly, 73, died Monday, April 10, 2006, at the home of her friend and caregiver, “Kay-Kay,” in Dunbar.

Born Dec. 6, 1932, at Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Trevor V. and Mary Lee Worrell Goode.

Mrs. Lilly was a 52 year resident of Corinne, a member of the Corinne Missionary Baptist Church, and was a former nurse for Dr. Sam Muscari, Sr.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Barger “Ed” Patrick in 1977; her second husband, Charles L. Lilly in 2002, and a step son, Charles E. “Chuck” Lilly.

Those left to cherish her memory include four daughters, Carolyn Patrick Conner and her husband, Gary of Winfield, Nellie Hodge and her husband, Joe of Corinne, Alicia York and her husband, Jimmy of Itmann, and Kay Pennington and her husband, Jim of Ashland, Ky.; two sons, Raymond Patrick and his wife, Bonnie of Annapolis, Md., and Mark Edward Patrick of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, Kermit Goode and his wife, Ethel of Bud; 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilbert Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Larry G. Burdette

INDIANAPOLIS — Larry G. “Peepa” Burdette, 62, a native of Beckley, died Thursday, June 8, 2006.

Born Oct. 5, 1943, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Reva Cooper Burdette and Lawrence Burdette.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Susan Lynn Lilly, and a brother, Charles Cooper.

Mr. Burdette was from Marion County in Indianapolis, Ind. He was employed by Perlman/Rocque Co. from 1986 to present, where he was a maintenance technician.

He was a member of East Rawls Church of God.

He enjoyed music and was known as Mr. Fix-It.

Survivors include his wife, Nonia Jones Burdette; a son, Jerry Hurley and wife, Lora, and Kenneth D. Hurley; daughters, Jeania Messer and Jennifer Kirstein and husband, David; sister, Lottie Adkins and husband, Billy Joe; a sister-in-law, Sue Burdette; two brothers, Melvin Burdette Basham and Glen Ray Burdette and his wife, Sue; five grandsons; and a granddaughter.

Service was 1 p.m. Monday, June 12, at Hendryx Mortuaries, Indianapolis. Burial followed in Memorial Park cemetery.

Friends called 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hendryx Cumberland Chapel and one hour before service Monday.

Violet Elizabeth Ellison

Violet Elizabeth Ellison, 88, of Beckley, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital, comforted by her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughters.

Born April 21, 1918, at Besoco, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. Tankersley and Damie Lusk Tankersley.

She was a homemaker and was deeply devoted to her family. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Ellison; a daughter, Shelvie Jenkins; a brother, Billy Frank Tankersley; and a sister, Helen Jewell.

Those left with wonderful memories are her daughter, Sara Jane Angle and husband, Gary, of Beckley; granddaughters, Melissa Angle Young and husband, Jason, of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Andrea Angle Lafferty and husband, Brian, of Vinton, Va.; six great-grandchildren, Jacob, Casey and Whitnee Young, and Ellison, Taylor and Courtney Lafferty.

Service will be 1 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Allen Copenhaver officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends called 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family members.

John L. Mann

BALLARD — John L. Mann, 48, of Ballard, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va.

He was born Dec. 10, 1957, at Princeton, and was the son of Sadie Scarberry Mann of Ballard and the late Frank L. Mann.

John was a 1976 graduate of Peterstown High School and was employed at Celanese Corp. in Narrows, Va.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Alicia Mann and husband, Seth, of Greenville and Whitney Mann of Peterstown; a sister, Mescal Booth and husband, David, of Ballard; three brothers, Raymond Mann and wife, Hilda, of Harrisonburg, Va., Lewis Mann of Rocky Gap, Va., and Keith Mann and wife, Debbie, of Bluefield; and a granddaughter, Isabelle Gray Mann of Greenville.

Service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, June 15, at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with Dr. James Blume and the Rev. John Rinehart officiating. Burial will follow in Keaton cemetery, Greenville.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bessie G. Moore

On June 10, 2006, the Lord called Bessie G. Moore home to receive her heavenly crown and to take her rest in glory. The eldest child of the late William and Mary Adams was born March 2, 1930, in Winding Gulf.

“Mrs. Bessie” was a member of First Baptist Church of Harper Heights since childhood. She served as a member of the Mission Circle, worked in the kitchen and often played the piano.

In the early years in the community she served as an volunteer at Harper Heights Elementary and Crescent Elementary. She also was secretary for the Harper Heights Community Counsel and was a member of the Homemakers Club.

Bessie was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Randolph J. Moore Sr.; parents, William Sr. and Mary Adams; son, Randolph J. Moore Jr.; siblings, William “Doug” Jr., Agee, Benjaman, Cordelia and Cynthia.

Survivors include four children, Yvonne Anderson, Larry Moore (Doris), Kim Leftwich (Darrell) and Ruanda Moore and daughter-in-law Evelyn Moore, widow of the deceased son, Randolph J. Moore Jr.; brother and sisters, Joseph Adams (Judi), Gloria Mae Johnson (Lonnie), Sally Pullen, Ginger Nelms (Howell) and Andre’a (Michael) Robinson; special sister-in-law, Betty Adams; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Harper Heights, with the Rev. Darrell Leftwich and the Rev. Thomas V. Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Thursday at the church.

Arrangements entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Solomon Mullins Jr.

IAEGER — Solomon Mullins Jr., 56, of Coon Branch, died Sunday, June 11, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at High Knob Church of the Living God. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the church.

Stephen H. Pilkington

CHICAGO — Stephen H. Pilkington, 34, formerly of Hinton, died Sunday, June 11, 2006, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at Chicago following a short illness.

Born Oct. 2, 1971, at Hinton, he was the son of Harry Pilkington of Hinton and the late Joan Leith Pilkington.

Stephen was an employee of Reliable Finishing Products of Chicago and when in Hinton attended Riverview Chapel.

He was a 1989 graduate of Hinton High School. Stephen was a talented musician who enjoyed all types of music and was an avid sports fan.

Besides his father, he is survived by three sisters, Mary Rutherford and husband, Jonathan, of St. John, New Brunswick, Elizabeth Spiala and husband, Mike, of Chestertown, Md., and Joy Williams and husband, Jimmy, of Hinton; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with David Pollock and Mark Brandon officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens near Hinton.

Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral parlor.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Myrtle Payne Rodriguez

Myrtle Cora Payne Rodriguez of Greystone Drive, Beaver, died Sunday, June 11, 2006, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. She was 88 years of age.

Born Dec. 20, 1917, at Mountain City, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late William Issac and Vada Johnson Payne.

Myrtle spent her childhood at Mountain City. She was a resident of Newark, N.J., for 29 years, where she was employed by Federal Electric. She and her late husband of 49 years, Emilio Rodriguez, retired to Vero Beach, Fla. They were residents of Vero Beach for 20 years. A member of First Christian Church, Courthouse Square in Beckley, she had resided here since 1998.

In addition to her parents, and her husband, Emilio, who passed on July 13, 1996, Myrtle was preceded in death by her sisters, Gertrude Ellis and Bertha Payne; a brother, Rod Payne; and a stepmother, Cora Payne.

Those left to honor her memory are a sister, Essie J. Goode, and a brother, Ralph Payne, both of Beckley; a sister, Lacie Payne of Mountain City; and a stepson Joseph Rodriguez and his wife, Fabino, of Sun City West, Ariz., and their children, Joseph and Frank. She was a dear aunt to several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 3 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Melton Mortuary Chapel, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, with the Rev. Rick Martin officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service Thursday.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Deadra Denise Steers

GOSHEN, Va. — Deadra Denise “Dee Dee” Steers, 36, of 72 Paxton Drive, died Sunday, June 11, 2006, at her home following a sudden illness.

Born May 6, 1970, in Hinton, she was the daughter of Ramona Gwinn Meadows of Hinton and the late Bobby Lee Meadows.

Deadra was a homemaker and former textile worker for Stillwater Corp.

Besides her mother, survivors include her husband, Clyde Steers; two daughters, Pamela and Santana Steers, both at home; two brothers, Bobby Lee Meadows and companion, Frances, of Talcott and Rusty Meadows and wife, Cindy, of Hilldale; two sisters, Missy Turner of Hinton and July Willey and husband, Jesse, of Hinton; father and mother-in-law, Frederick and Shirley Steers of Hinton; sister-in-law, Jo Ann Piner and husband, Bill, of Hinton; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service and burial will be 1 p.m. today at Hilltop cemetery near Hinton with Pastor Don Hannah officiating. Friends may call noon until departure for the cemetery today at Pivont Funeral Home, Hinton.

Pallbearers will be Richard and Daniel Grimmett, Billy Piner, Jeremy Gross, Shawn Cales and Jesse Willey III.

MARLINTON — Oliver James Young, 47, of Marlinton, died Monday, June 12, 2006.
