Nancy 'Nana' Nelson

LAYLAND - Nancy Lee "Nana" Nelson, 76, died Monday, June 16, 2003, in Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, following a short illness.

Born Aug. 1, 1926, at Thayer, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mable Theresa Pitsenbarger Carter.

Mrs. Nelson was a former inspector for a clothing manufacturer.

Her husband, Alden Nelson in 1996, and a sister, Frankie Spinks, as well as her parents, preceded her in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Donna Stofan and her husband, Leonard, of Layland, Dottie Boothe and her husband, Richard, of Layland and Josetta Porach and her husband, Pete, of Cleveland, Ohio; three stepdaughters, Dreama Michaels, Kathleen Kachur and Barbara Edgehouse, all of Cleveland; two sons, Raymond Jainniney Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Polk, Ohio, and Joshua Towner of Layland; a stepson, Timothy Nelson of Cleveland; a sister, Betty Adams of Corliss; a brother, Charles William Carter of Apopca, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and Brenda Fox, Becky Fogg, Kathleen Lawrence and Scott Fogg, whom she cared for.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Sherman McCombs officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Yvonne B. Pannell

Yvonne Brown Pannell, 80, of 100 Heartland Drive, Beckley, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Born Feb. 18, 1923, in Mullens, she was the daughter of the late Silas Brown and Lucy Spencer Brown.

Mrs. Pannell was a head cook. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, member of No. 2 Choir at her church and was retired from Commission on Aging and CVTC in Lynchburg, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Quinton Pannell; and a loving aunt, Mary Miller.

Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie G. West and Antionette Pate, both of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Charles W. West Jr. of Roanoke, Va., stationed in Cuba, and Moneta West of Charlotte, N.C.; and a great-grandchild, Nyemah L. West of Roanoke. Other family members include the Rev. Robert B. Morton and wife, Mary, of Beckley, Viola Martin and husband, Joseph, of Silver Spring, Md., the Rev. Samuel Morton and wife, Laura, of Columbus, Ohio, Deacon Melvin Morton of Columbus, James Morton and wife, Rose, Henry Morton and Vertzell Morton, all of Beckley, Marva Mayo of Hickory, N.C., Samantha Spencer of West Wickham and Lisa and Debbie Hill of Baltimore, Md.; devoted friends, Carrie Townsend and Elaine Hale, both of Beckley; and the family of New Hope Baptist Church whom she loved dearly.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert B. Morton officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Friends may call one hour before service Friday at the church.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

BOOMER - Arthur O. Plants, 89, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at White Funeral Home, Summersville. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Louise Rose Rosiek

OAK HILL - Louise Rose Rosiek, 81, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at her home of an apparent heart attack.

Born May 8, 1922, at Lochgelly, she was the daughter of the late Walter John Kania Sr. and Valeria Pieprzyk Kania.

Mrs. Rosiek was a retired clerk for A&P Grocery Store and a homemaker. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Rosiek Sr.; and brothers, Walter J. Kania Jr., Theodore G. "Ted" Kania Sr., Bernard J. "Bernie" Kania Sr. and John Walter Kania.

Survivors include a daughter, Renee Rosiek of Durham, N.C.; three sons, John J. Rosiek Jr. and wife, Carolyn, of Oak Hill, Randal Rosiek Sr. and wife, Virginia, of Oak Hill and Robert Rosiek and wife, Teresa, of Fayetteville; a sister, Nellie Obrzut of Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, Stanley Kania of Silver Spring, Md., Joe Kania of Gauley Bridge and Casimer Kania of York, Pa.; and nine grandchildren, Caroline Rosiek, Alison Rosiek, John Joseph Rosiek III, Ryan Rosiek, Randal Rosiek Jr., Miranda Rosiek, Ivana Rosiek, Mary Kate Rosiek and Jacqueline Rosiek.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill, with Father John P. McDonough officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, where a prayer service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

Hallie Scruggs Jr.

WHITBY - Hallie Scruggs Jr., 80, of 116 Scruggs St., died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at SunBridge Pine Lodge in Beckley following a long illness.

Born Aug. 2, 1922, at Tralee, he was the son of the late Hallie Scruggs Sr. and Elizabeth Joplin Scruggs.

Mr. Scruggs was a retired miner, a member of American Legion Post 70 and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Lee Scruggs; and a brother, Adolphus Scruggs.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Esther Buoy Scruggs; a son, William Jos-eph Scruggs and wife, Fannie, of Augusta, Ga.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters, John G. Scruggs and wife, Mary, of Lynchburg, Va., William E. Scruggs and wife, Evelyn, of Beckley, Maggie Larkin of Mead, Obryant Scruggs and wife, Mildred, of Richmond, Va., Elsie Cathorn of Evergreen, Va., Samuel Scruggs and wife, Diane, of Appomattox, Va., and Earnest Gene Scruggs and wife, Linda, of Appomattox; a brother-in-law, Grayson Jerome Bradley and wife, Irene, of Sicklerville, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Free and Independent Holiness Church, 106 7th St., Beckley, with Bishop Ernest Stewart and Elder Philander Moon officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the church.

James Horace D. Bolen

James Horace D. Bolen, born July 5, 1934, in Besoco, left this world to join his beloved wife Lola Faye Holshouser Bolen in his heavenly home on Tuesday, July 25, 2006. He died of lung cancer after a short illness.

Horace was a member of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the United States Army. Horace left West Virginia in 1958 and lived in Illinois for over 20 years where he was a member of the Teamsters Local Union 710. He then moved to Coal City, where he was a member of the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department. He then lived with his daughter in Grayson, Ky., and then in Sevierville, Tenn.

He is survived by his daughter, Anita Noe of Sevierville; a granddaughter, Cassandra “Cassie” Havenstreit, and a grandson, Eric Noe, both of Lexington, Ky.; two sisters, Notie Walker and Rainell Smith and husband, Steve, all of Shady Spring; sisters-law, Joanna Bolen of Kevil, Ky., Helen Bolen of Spring Hill, Fla., and Harvalea Cadle and Gina Holshouser, both of Sevierville; brother-in-law, Arty Bryce Holshouser and wife, Penny, of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Faye Holshouser Bolen; his mother and father, James Hub and Virgie (Garretson) Bolen; two brothers, Okey and Clarence Bolen; a sister, Susan Gayhart; and brothers-in-law, Sherman Walker, Mark Holshouser, Kenneth Cadle and O.V. Gayhart.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Larken C. Calhoun officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Members of the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.

SUMMERSVILLE — Gla-dys Butler, 96, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

William Roscoe Caldwell

UNION — William Roscoe Caldwell, 81, passed away Monday night, July 24, 2006, at White Sulphur Springs Center following a short illness.

Born May 11, 1925, at Waiteville, he was the son of the late William Robert and Bertha Mae Bostic Caldwell.

Mr. Caldwell was a timberman and affiliated with the Baptist church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Gray Thompson Caldwell; a daughter, Donna Sue Caldwell; two brothers, Virgil and Marshall Caldwell; and four sisters, Geraldine Dunbar, Leona Dunbar, Hazel Thompson and Eula Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Spangler Caldwell; two daughters, Nancy Cary of Ronceverte and Donna Hedrick and her husband, Rusty, of Sinks Grove; a son, Allen Caldwell of Union; a sister, Cordelia Dunbar of Union; eight grandchildren, Melissa King, Pamela Ramsey, Crystal and Timothy Weikle, Jennifer Cary, Julie Garst, and Audrey and Shannon Hedrick; nine great-grandchildren, Kyle and Kenneth King Jr., Derek, Evan, Zachary and Hannah Grace Ramsey, Lorriana Weikle, and A.J. and Ally Austin.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Groves Funeral Home Chapel, Union, with the Rev. Paul Suttle and Bobby Dunbar officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery, Keenan.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Dinston ‘Baby June’ Cecil Jr.

KOPPERSTON — Dinston W. “Baby June” Cecil Jr., 67, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Long Branch Freewill Baptist Church. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today until time of the service Saturday at the church.

The family is being served by Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco.

Violet Rosetta Ennis

MEADOW BRIDGE — Violet Rosetta Ennis, 75, of Old Harrah Road, passed away Monday evening, July 24, 2006, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born Oct. 27, 1930, at Meade, she was the daughter of the late Leland and Irene Bailey Vandall.

Mrs. Ennis was a wife, mother, grandmother and was often a caregiver for the elderly. She was of the Holiness faith.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Ennis; two brothers, Junior and Raymond Vandall; a sister, Vivian Vandall; a grandson, David Ennis II; and a great-grandson, Cody Ennis.

Survivors include her husband, Flura “Brother” Ennis; a daughter, Linda Adkins and fiancé, Bill, of Meadow Bridge; a son, David Ennis and wife, Anita, of Maplewood; five sisters, Peggy Thomas of Meadow Bridge, Shirley Taylor and husband, Stanley, of Rainelle, Dolly Bryant and husband, Harvey, of Elton, Connie Fox and husband, Wayne, of Meadow Bridge and Drema Neff and fiancé, Winfred, of Elton; two sisters-in-law, Ruby of Josephine and Isabell of North Carolina; four brothers, Timmy Vandall and wife, Judy, of Elton, Roger Vandall of Elton, Eddie Vandall and wife, Linda, of Beckley and Eugene Vandall of Meadow Bridge; five grandchildren, Melinda Lester and husband, Tommy, of Landisburg, Kimberly Ennis of Danese, Joseph Ennis of Maplewood, Angel Williams and fiancé, Steven Lilly, of Meadow Bridge and Patrick Cool and fiancée, Shena Fox, of Meadow Bridge; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, with the Rev. Mark Spence officiating. Burial will follow in Elton cemetery.

Paul Edward Hall

ALDERSON — Paul Edward Hall, 72, formerly of Auxier, Ky., and Cleveland, Ohio, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at his home in Alderson following a short illness.

Born Jan. 30, 1934, in Auxier, Ky., he was the son of the late Jack and Sally Wells Hall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Hall, and a sister, Jean Yerich.

Mr. Hall was a retired foreman from Midwest Materials, Perry, Ohio. He was also a foreman for Avery International, Painesville, Ohio, for many years. He was a 1954 graduate of Oil Springs High School, Oil Springs, Ky., and was a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Hall was a member of Griffith Creek Baptist Church, Alderson, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty Lou Cordial Hall; four children, Gregory Lee Hall and his wife, Saundra, of London, Ky., Sally Mae Boucher and her husband, Joel, of Alderson, Brenda Hall Lilly and her husband, John, of Beckley and Paul Edward Hall II of Alderson; a brother, Douglas Hall and his wife, Laura, of Paintsville, Ky.; a sister, Mabel Durachinsky of Solon, Ohio; five grandchildren, Stacey Ann Hall of London, Ky., Stephanie Marie Dickenson and her husband, John, of Alderson, Brian Michael Boucher of Alderson, Jack Gregory Hall of London, Ky., and Zachary Austin Lilly of Beckley; a great-granddaughter, Alexis Faith Dickenson of Alderson; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, July 28, at Griffith Creek Baptist Church, Alderson, with Pastor Ben Hammond officiating. Burial will follow in Hall Family cemetery, Alderson.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson, and one hour before service Friday at the church.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kermit Burdette, Gary Clark, John Lilly, Brian Bou-cher, Jack Hall and John Dickenson.

Military funeral honors will be conducted by the West Virginia Army National Guard.
