Ruth O. Hall

Ruth O. Hall, 71, of Terry, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, following a long illness.

Born May 16, 1932, at Concho, she was the daughter of the late John Foster and Anna (Harris) Foster Clifford.

Mrs. Hall served her community as the former postmaster at Terry for 25 years. She also worked at Beckley Manufacturing for 10 years and worked at Southern West Virginia Clinic in the housekeeping department. She was a member of Terry Independent Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Shirley Foster, Benny Foster and Pete Cheslock.

She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her husband, Billy Hall Sr.; her children, Billy Hall Jr. and wife, Donna, of Crab Orchard, Lucy Henson and husband, Phillip, of Beckley, Jerry Hall of Terry and Lana Ames and husband, Samuel, of Terry; a brother, James Foster of Beckley; six grandchildren, Billy Hall III, ShArmyn Stutler, Michelle Griffin, Heather MacDonald, Jerry Hall II and Phillip Henson II; 16 great-grandchildren; and an aunt, Leona Biggs of Matheny.

Service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Revs. Gene Hall and Lonnie Grear officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Freddie R. Blevins

On Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, Freddie R. Blevins passed away in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. He was 74 years of age.

Born Freddie Russell Blevins on May 5, 1932, in Beckley, he was one of eight children born to the late George W. and Bessie Fix Blevins.

Freddie spent his childhood on Larew Avenue in Beckley. He served in the U.S. Army during the era of the Korean War. He held the rank of corporal. He had been a longshoreman in New Jersey. Freddie returned to Beckley in 1971. In recent years he had made his home at Manor House on Johnstown Road. He was of the Christian faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Blevins; a granddaughter, Jennifer Kaylor; two brothers, Cledith and George W. Blevins Jr.; and two sisters, Lodema F. Rodriguez and Catherine M. McNeely.

Survivors include a daughter, Pam Kaylor and her husband, Thomas, of Victor; sons, Robert Epling and his wife, Ann, of Melbourne, Fla., and Fred Blevins Jr. of Fairfax, Va.; stepsons, Michael Epling and his wife, Donna, and Phillip Epling, all of Falls Church, Va.; eight living grandchildren and two great-grandsons; a brother, Harold W. Blevins and his wife, Beverly, of Lake City, Fla.; and sisters, Jean Ormandy and her husband, Bill, and Peggy Hoskins and her husband, Grady, all of Beckley.

Memorial service will be 6 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Paul Blizard officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour before service today at the mortuary.

Thelma Denny Bryant

Thelma Denny Bryant, 72, born Feb. 3, 1934, in Pulaski, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006.

Mrs. Bryant was a resident of Hilltop Nursing Home, formerly of Mabscott.

She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Bert Denny; father, Lawrence Myers; and mother, Bertie Myers.

Mrs. Bryant was a devoted Christian and did a lot of volunteer work for the Salvation Army of Pulaski. She was of the Holiness faith and a former member of Mabscott United Methodist Church.

Left to cherish her memories are her loving son and daughter-in-law, William and Melissa Denny of Beckley; son and wife, Jesse and Jenny, and grandson, Corbin Denny, of Maple Fork; daughter-in-law, Mary Denny of Beckley; her brothers, Joe and wife, Leah Myers, of Draper, Va., and Fred and Diane Myers of Dublin, Va.; her sisters, Carol and husband, Robert Roark, of Pulaski, Va., and Jacqueline Spence of Pulaski.

She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Brittany and William Denny of Beckley. She will also be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews; and great-nephews and nieces of Pulaski; and special friends, Agnus and employees of Hilltop Nursing Home.

Service will be 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Jerry Tyree officiating.

Friends may call 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Velva Ruth Trent Griffin

LYNCO — Velva Ruth Trent Griffin, 92, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

She was born April 1, 1914, in Frenchburg, Ky., a daughter of the late Lofa and Zo-na Walker Trent.

She was a homemaker and attended Apostolic Faith Tabernacle.

Survivors include a son, Ernest Blankenship and his wife, Lougetta, of Lynco; a sister, Stella Sanford and husband, Robert, of Michigan; grandchildren, Shirley Fields, Ervin Blankenship, Debby Blankenship, James Blankenship, Michael Blankenship, Sharon Landers, Tiffany Toler, Zadie Landers, Ann Landers and Thelma Landers; great-grandchildren, David Rickerson, Eric Rickerson, Gary Fields, Angie Blankenship, Becky Blankenship, Eddie Blankenship, Patty Blankenship, David Prater, Shanna Winkles, Jessie Blankenship, John Blankenship and Michael Blankenship Jr.; her caregiver Naomi Graham; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Church, Lillydale, with Pastor Curtis Stafford and Brother Rocky Morgan officiating.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Sunday at Graceland Memorial Gardens, Afton, Tenn.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the church.

The family is being served by Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco.

Bonnie Harrison

LAKELAND, Fla. — Bonnie Harrison, beloved wife of 25 years of Warren Sharp, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, in Lakeland. She was 88 years old.

A native of Pendleton County, daughter of Kenny and Ollie Rexrode, Ms. Harrison was employed by Kroger for 20 years. She moved to Plano, Texas, in 1981 before residing in Mulberry, Fla., for the previous 10 years. She was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Lakeland.

Her first husband, “Jack” Harrison, passed away in 1977. She was preceded in death by brothers, Junior and Roy, and sister, Glenna.

In addition to her husband, Warren Sharp, she is survived by her son, Jim Harrison of Houston, Texas, and son, Jerry Harrison, of Augusta, Ga. She is also survived by a sister, Leta Rader of Franklin; a grandson, Matthew Harrison of Allen, Texas; granddaughters, Jennifer Tufford of Plano and Jan Furlow of Alexandria, Va.; and eight adoring great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, Clintonville, with the Rev. Doyle Kester officiating.

Friends may call 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the Salvation Army.

Franklin Holly Sr.

FAYETTEVILLE — Franklin Holly (James Franklin Holly Sr.), 85, of Fayetteville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, after an extended illness.

Born Nov. 1, 1921, at Victor, he was the son of the late William Henry and Maggie Holly.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sallie Miller; a sister, Fannie Bickford; a brother, Everett Holly; a brother, Ophie Holly; and a brother, William “Junior” Holly.

He was a retired coal miner and a lifelong member of the UMWA, and finished his career with Westmoreland Coal Co. at Eccles. He had trusted the Lord and been an active member of Cotton Hill Baptist Church since 1960, where he had served in many capacities over the years, including the Deacon Board. Furthermore, he was a decorated combat veteran of World War II, where he ultimately served in the occupation of Japan by the Allied Forces. In total, Franklin served 42 months of military duty in Hawaii, Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Army, Franklin returned to West Virginia, where he married his surviving wife of 58 years, Mary Holly.

Franklin is also survived by a sister, Judy Kessler and her husband, William, of Beckwith; and his four children, son James F. Holly Jr., his wife, Debbie, of South Hill, Va., son Keith Holly and his wife, Charlotte, of Fayetteville, son Kevin Holly of Oak Hill and daughter Kelli Harvey, and her husband, John Harvey, of Troutman, N.C. He is survived by seven grandchildren, including James F. Holly III and his fiancee, Angie Wood, Ryan Holly and his fiancee, P.J. Cole, Amy Holly, Allen King, Cody King, Brett Harvey and Jason Supthin and his wife, Erin. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Cotton Hill Baptist Church, Beckwith, with Pastor Daniel Sears leading the service. Burial will be in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville.

Bethel Hungate Lilly

Bethel Hungate Lilly, 73, of Prosperity, formerly of Coal City, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Born Nov. 24, 1933, at Laurel Creek, she was the daughter of the late Robert L. Staton and Rose Berry Staton.

After graduation from Woodrow Wilson High School, Mrs. Lilly had been employed at G.C. Murphy Co., JC Penney, and the Hill’s Department Store.

She retired from Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, last working in the Emergency Room Department as a unit secretary. Her employment at Raleigh General Hospital, beginning at the old hospital, lasted for 28 years.

She received the Dr. Frist Humanitarian Award in 1996 for her hard work and passion for her job.

Mrs. Lilly attended Cranberry Baptist Church.

She was loved by everyone, and will be remembered for her considerate, enthusiastic, selfless personality and as a good cook and for her peanut butter fudge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Lilly; brothers, John Lee Staton and Robert L. Staton; and sisters, Bertha Malone and Beverly Haygood.

Surviving are her first husband and the father of her three children, Dexter Hungate; a son, H.D. “J.R.” Hungate and wife, Beth, of Richmond, Va.; daughters, Kathy Sanders and husband, Doug, of Beckley and Annette Phillips and husband, Gary, of Camp Creek; a stepson, Michael Lilly and wife, Linda, of Mobile, Ala.; grandchildren, Jeremy and Jennifer Sanders, Brittany and Brooklyn Attilli, Kendall and Rachael Hungate, Jason and Jennifer Lilly, and Devin, Dana and Jarred Phillips; great-grandchildren, Kaidin, Addison and Riley Phillips; brothers, Jimmy Staton and wife, “Judy,” of MacArthur and Danny Staton and wife, Peggy, of Shady Spring; sisters, Shirley Hudgins of Roanoke, Va., and Sharon Fink and husband, Ronnie, of Coal City; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Roger Pauley officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Decima Naomi Pennock

OAK HILL — Decima Naomi Pennock, 71, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division.

Born May 8, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Theodore Everett and Mary Elizabeth Coleman Pennock.

A Christian all her life, Decima was raised in the Brethren Church and later participated in the Assembly of God and Alliance churches until ill health prevented her attendance.

Her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins preceded her in death.

Survivors include four sisters, Mary Lu (Rodney) Warstler, Nila Smith, Theodora Pennock and Eleanor (Patrick) Hamilton.

Also surviving are nieces and nephews, (Mary Lu’s family) Liz (Don) Flaker and children, Timothey Warstler and daughter, Martha (Keith) Coleman, and son, James (Sandra) Warstler and children; (Nila’s family) Melinda Kincaid and children and grandchildren, Angel Hunt and children, Melissa (Scott) Moore, Tede Smith and daughter; (Eleanor’s family) Jason, Robin (Terry) Holtman and Bethany.

Several cousins, a loving aunt, Lula Thompson, and many friends, including special friends Kathy and Javo Ward and daughters, Crystal and Jeannette, survive.

Decima also leaves many pets that gave her pleasure during her long illness.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. George Mandakunis officiating. Burial will follow in Dooley cemetery, Salem Road, Route 1, Fayetteville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour before service Saturday.

Tommy Rakes

Tommy Rakes, 58, of Shady Spring, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006.

Born May 4, 1948, he was the son of the late Louie and Violet Rakes.

Tommy enjoyed hunting, being outdoors, attending church and spending time with his grandchildren and working with his hands. He will be sadly missed by family and many friends.

He was a retired coal miner and a self-employed contractor. Tommy attended the Family Worship Center Church in Beckley where he was on the Building Grounds Maintenance Committee and Finance Committees. He was also a deacon and a Sunday school teacher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Madison.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Pamela Delp Rakes; son, Bobby Rakes and wife, Angela, of Ghent; daughter, Tisha Walker and husband, David, of Shady Spring; five grandchildren, Daley Drew Walker, Dustin Dwayne Walker, Madison Brooke Walker, Robert Madison Rakes II and Thomas Neil Rakes; brothers, Dempsey Rakes and wife, Linda, of MacArthur and L.C. Rakes of MacArthur; and sisters, Scarlet Perdue and husband, Hershel, of MacArthur and Vicki Harvey and husband, Carl, of Cool Ridge.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Family Worship Center, Beckley, with Pastor Mark Schrade and Pastor Sam Peterson officiating.

Friends may gather with the family 11 a.m. until time of service.

Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Contributions may be made to the Family Worship Building Fund Center, 224 Pinewood Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
