Charles Thomas Pate

FAYETTEVILLE - Charles Thomas Pate, 84, of 122 Second Ave., Fayetteville, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Sheltering Arms Care Center, Fayetteville, following a long illness.

Born Feb. 20, 1919, in Carlisle, he was the son of the late Thomas Pate and Martha Rogers Pate.

Mr. Pate was a retired miner and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Moore Pate; children, Charles Thomas Pate Jr. and wife, Dana H., of Harlem Heights, Terry "Tally" Pate of Harlem Heights and Robert Pate of Coatesville, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Delonda Moore of Columbus, Ohio, and Juvetta Wallace of Wilmington, Del.; a stepson, Troy Lee Moore and wife, Gwendolyn, of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Josephine Pate Chester and husband, Curtis, of Scott Depot and Christine Hobson and husband, Virgil, of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters-in-law, Rosetta Swain and Loretta Pryor, both of Beckley; two brothers-in-law, Charles Moore of Beckley and James Moore and wife, Sally, of Mooresville, N.C.; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Abner Wright officiating.

Friends may call 2:30 p.m. until time of service Sunday at the funeral parlor.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Janet Lee Radcliff

TIOGA - Janet Lee Radcliff, 61, formerly of East Lake, Ohio, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Cleo Margaret Yeager

OAK HILL - Cleo Margaret Yeager, 85, formerly of Page, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Mary's Garden at Hidden Valley in Oak Hill.

Born June 11, 1918, at Page, she was the daughter of the late George L. and Bettie Fleshman Yeager.

Ms. Yeager was a retired English teacher for Collins Junior High School in Oak Hill.

She was a member of Kincaid United Methodist Church where she was church pianist for over 65 years. She was also a member of the Retired School Employees, WVEA and United Methodist Women.

Ms. Yeager was a graduate of Montgomery High School and West Virginia Tech. She did graduate work at Duke University.

She was preceded in death by a brother, George Robert Yeager; and a sister, Julia McGinnes.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Cook of Beckley; a sister-in-law, Dora Yeager of Oak Hill; three nephews, George R. Yeager II of Florida, William J. Yeager of Florida and Andrew Kevin Cook of Gastonia, N.C.; a niece, Pamela Cook of Beckley; two great-nephews, Drew and Chris Cook of Gastonia; a great-niece, Tiffany Yeager of Beckley; and her friends and caregivers at the Summit where she had resided for the past three years and her caregivers at Mary's Garden.

Service will be 1 p.m. today at Kincaid United Methodist Church with the Rev. Arolette Stover officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call noon to 1 p.m. today at the church.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Kincaid Methodist Church.

Joe L. Abrams, 79, of 475 Shrivers Ave., Raleigh, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Raleigh General Hospital following an extended illness.

Carmon Bailey, 75, of Granny Mae Road, Bolt, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Janet P. Canady, 55, of Sullivan Road, passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at her home following a strong battle with cancer.

Leland Clarence Green

LASHMEET - Leland Clarence Green, 79, formerly of Bud, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in a Princeton hospital following a short illness.

Born Jan. 10, 1924, at Bud, he was the son of the late Richard Lee and Martha Stanley Green.

Mr. Green was a former coal miner. He was last employed as a sawmill edger, having retired in 1985 from Apgar Lumber in North East, Md.

He was of the Regular Baptist faith. In his leisure time he loved to hunt, ginseng and was an avid gardener.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Allie Mae Green; a sister, Margaret Archie; and two brothers, Kilby Green and Jahu Wesley Green.

Survivors include a son, William J. Green and his wife, Wanda, of Elkton, Md.; a sister, Lenora Phelps of Oceana; a brother, Treber Green of Elkton; three grandchildren, William Green, John Green and Wanda Green; a great-granddaughter, Quinn Tiara Green; two stepgrandchildren, Charles Ruble and Theresa Ruble; and seven stepgrandchildren, Haley Ruble, Rebecca Heverin, Daniel Heverin, Darin Ruble, Chase Ruble, Xavier "Cody" Mackay and Alexis Ruble.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with Elder Bryce Phillips and the Rev. Danny Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in Hickory Ridge cemetery, Bud Mountain.

Friends may call one hour before service Monday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

SUMMERSVILLE - Ilene Ruth Hypes, 90, of Summersville, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003.

Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.

Jack L. James Sr.

Jack L. James Sr., 67, of North Sand Branch, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division.

Born Dec. 18, 1935, at North Sand Branch, he was the son of the late Emory and Anna Evans James.

Mr. James was a former employee of Sophia Electric and Gunter Electric. He attended Little Valley Baptist Church and Weirwood Community Church.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barbara Duncan James; two sons, Jack L. James Jr. and wife, Karen, Roger L. James and wife, Nancy, all of North Sand Branch; two grandsons, Jackie E. James and wife, Lisa, and Jason James, all of North Sand Branch; a granddaughter, Bobbie Sue Lyons of North Sand Branch; and two great-granddaughters, Kelsie Jo James and Cierra Faith James, both of North Sand Branch.

He was a role model for his family and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with the Rev. Tom Lilly and Junior Plumley officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Charles L. Pack Jr.

NIMITZ - Charles L. Pack Jr., 86, of Halstead's Care Home, Nimitz, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at the care home following a short illness.

Born April 6, 1917, in Summers County, he was a son of the late Charles L. and Grace Harvey Pack and was a retired auto mechanic.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Deeds Pack, in September 1998; four sisters, Nannie Ramsey, Annie Yancy, Marie Cox and Sadie Pack; and four brothers, Lacey, Woodrow, Harley and Cletis Pack.

Survivors include a stepson, Gary Deeds of Jumping Branch; three stepgrandchildren, Vincent, Suesanne and Wellington Deeds; a sister, Pauline Carter of Daniels; three brothers, Mike Pack of Christiansburg, Va., Curtis Pack of Lancaster, Ohio, and Wilbur Pack of Hinton; a special niece, Ruth Thomas of Forest Hill; two special friends, Eugene and Susie Jones of Jumping Branch; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Jeff Canterbury officiating. Burial will follow in Roles Chapel Baptist Church cemetery, Forest Hill.

Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral parlors.

Deacon James Rhinehart, 80, of 113 G St., Beckley, died Saturday morning, Oct. 18, 2003, at a local hospital after a long illness.

Drema 'Libby' Ellen Taylor Surnear Richards

FAYETTEVILLE - Drema "Libby" Ellen Taylor Surnear Richards, 62, of Route 1, Fayetteville, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.

Born June 15, 1941, in Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur H. and Kathleen Clifford Taylor.

She was a retired forklift operator for Lear Corp., Strasburg, Va., and a Baptist by faith.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Surnear; her second husband, Lennie F. Richards; a son, Steven Surnear; a brother, Charles Taylor; and a sister, Anna Gibson.

Survivors include her daughter, Darlene Catron of Bradley; a son, Stacy Surnear of Winchester, Va.; five brothers, Howard "Bud" Taylor of Ohio, Gene Taylor of Scarbro, Carl Taylor of Scarbro, David "Mick" Taylor of Scarbro and Roger "Butch" Taylor of Oak Hill; and six grandchildren, Shawn, Brandon, Jason, Timothy, Stevie and Eric.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Jessie Parker officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Shawn, Brandon, Jason, Bret, Bill, J.C. and Stevie.

Edna Alice Sarrett

Edna Alice Sarrett, 88, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003.

Born Sept. 21, 1915, in Posey, she was the daughter of the late L.C. Milam and Marjorie B. Webb.

Edna and her husband moved to Akron, Ohio, in 1952 and were both employed with Hopkins Manufacturing Co. After retiring she moved with her family to Phoenix and enjoyed many long vacations and trips with her brother, N.C. Milam, and his wife, Elaine. A member of Epworth Methodist Church for 25 years, she enjoyed many church functions with family and friends. Edna returned to Akron in 2002 to be with her family. She was a friend of everyone who knew her and always emphasized family holidays and birthdays to spread love and joy for young and old alike. Special thanks to Hospice of Summa who assisted and prepared her for her journey to eternal peace and life hereafter.

She was preceded in death by her infant son, Gerald Sarrett; and husband, Oliver "Pete" Sarrett.

Survivors include her son, Don Sarrett; a grandson, Jonathan and wife, Shannon; and a great-granddaughter, Shelbi Amber.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Larry Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Miller cemetery, Rock Creek.

Friends may call two hours before service Monday at the funeral home.
