Simo Slijepcevic

Simo Slijepcevic, 73, of Sunset Drive, Beckley, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born April 12, 1930, in Hrtic, Yugoslavia, he was the son of the late Milos and Sava Opacic Slijepcevic.

Simo spent his childhood in Hrtic. He served in the Yugoslavia military and worked in construction. He attended St. George Serbian Orthodox Church. Simo came to the United States in 1971, settling on Hartley Avenue, and was employed by J.O. Lively Construction as a heavy equipment operator. He became a naturalized citizen in 1980 and was a member of St. Nicholas Orthodox on South Heber Street. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting in his leisure time.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Danica, and three sons, Mirko and wife, Jane, of Scott Depot, Mike of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Dan "Slipkovich" and wife, Lisa, of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Nicholas, Allison, Daniel, Shawn, Sam and Jacob; a brother, Branko of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Bora Joka of Belgrade, Serbia; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 211 S. Heber St., Beckley, with the Rev. Father Samuel Haddad officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary, Beckley.

A Trisgion service will be conducted at 8 p.m. during the wake.

Bernice Shumate Smith

GLEN LYN, Va. - Bernice Shumate Smith of Glen Lyn went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Glen Lyn Church of Christ. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today and the family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown.

Robert William St. Clair Sr.

Robert William St. Clair Sr., 76, of Beckley, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill following a short illness.

John A. 'Bunk' Taylor

SWARTZ, Mich. - John A. "Bunk" Taylor, 70, of Swartz, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003.

Born Jan. 15, 1933, at Mabscott, he was the son of the late John and Lorraine Taylor.

Mr. Taylor spent his childhood at Mabscott. He had been a resident of the Flint, Mich., area since 1956. Bunk was a member of the Durand Eagles Club and Durand Moose Lodge. He was retired from GM, Chevrolet V-8 Engine Plant.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dee A. Harris Taylor; and a brother, Frank.

Survivors include his children, Pam McMillin and husband, Jerry, of Lennon, Mich., Susie Gaines and husband, Robert, of Swartz Creek, Mich., Johnny Taylor and wife, Kerry, of Burton, Mich., Bobby Taylor and wife, Pam, of Swartz Creek and Lori Matthews and husband, Dave, of Goodrich, Mich.; the mother of his children, Catherine Taylor; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and nine brothers and sisters, William "Hope" Taylor, Mary Ada Smith, Jim Taylor, Elva McClure, Everette Taylor, George Taylor, Francis Corey-Pierce, Sharon Taylor and Juanita Davis.

Service will be noon Monday at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 W. Hill Road, Flint, with Dr. John D. Landis officiating. Burial will follow in Imlay City Township cemetery, Imlay, Mich.

Friends may call 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

BUD MOUNTAIN - Victor A. Bishop, 50, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at a Beckley hospital.

Judy Ann Burke

LESLIE - Judy Ann Burke, 62, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at her home following a short illness.

Born April 8, 1941, at Crichton, she was the daughter of Athelene Seabolt of Marfrance and the late Vangel V. Seabolt.

Mrs. Burke was a homemaker and of the Holiness faith. Many will remember her love for hostessing for such products as Home Interior and Avon, as well as others.

Mrs. Burke was also a powerful prayer warrior and good to visit many.

Survivors include her husband, Charles W. "Doonie" Burke; three sons, Michael and wife, Kimberly, of Leslie, Paul and wife, Marsha, of Rainelle and Seth and wife, Alison, of Rainelle; three daughters, Tacy Ann Patterson and husband, Terry, of Rainelle, Teresa Moreno of Rainelle and Cheryl Ball and husband, Roger, of Rainelle; a brother, Ron Seabolt and wife, Nancy, of Covington, Va.; a sister, Joy Spearman and husband, Jesse, of Greenwood, Ark.; and 11 grandchildren, Justin, Jacob, Madison and Lauren Burke, Johnny and Barbara Moreno, Brandon Blake, Caleb and Cendlelyn Stanley, and Tara and T.J. Patterson; as well as a host of other family and friends who loved her.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastors Brother C.W. Clinedinst and Brother David Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Services will conclude with the release of the White Flights.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Darrell Glen Deal

SUMMERSVILLE - Darrell Glen Deal, 58, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Beatrice Helen Grant

Beatrice Helen Grant, 92, of 219 Smoot Ave., Beckley, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at SunBridge Pine Lodge Care and Rehabilitation following an extended illness.

Born April 3, 1911, at Dunloop, she was the daughter of the late Charles Jackson and Maggie Jackson.

Mrs. Grant was a retired LPN, having worked in several hospitals in the area. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. At one time she served as assistant church clerk and served on the senior Usher Board and Willing Workers Club. She was also a member of the Sociocivettes Savings Club.

She was preceded in death by her children, Robert Woodson, Elvene Christian, James Woodson, Vivian Woodson and William Woodson; and a brother, Willie Calloway.

Survivors include her husband, Allen Grant; two sons, Wayne Woodson of Westbury, N.Y., and Michael Grant of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a stepson, Larry Grant of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Maggie Williams and husband, Eddie, of Rockville Centre, N.Y., Norma Parker and husband, Donald, of Beckley; two stepdaughters, Gail Grant and Joyce Grant, both of Columbus; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church, 304 Worley Road, Beckley, with the Rev. Nathaniel Carey officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the church.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Vernal Eugene 'Poochie' Hall Jr.

BUD - Vernal Eugene "Poochie" Hall Jr., 18, passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, from injuries sustained in a four-wheeler accident.

Born Jan. 6, 1985, in Beckley, he was the son of Vernal Eugene and Sandra Goode Hall.

"Poochie" worked for American Sprinkler in Virginia. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved riding his four-wheeler.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ruth Faulkner and Vernal Hall; maternal grandfather, Albert Goode; stepgrandfather, Ronald Morgan; two aunts; and two uncles.

Those left to mourn his passing are his parents, Vernal Eugene and Sandra Hall of Bud; maternal grandmother, Mary Goode of Bud; paternal stepgrandmother, Opal Morgan; several aunts and uncles; and a host of friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Bryce Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson cemetery, New Richmond.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be family and friends.

Sharon Hammons

BRISTOL, Va. - Sharon Hammons, 50, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home, Princeton. The family may be reached at the home of Gloria Parson. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Luedeema Howell

WAUKEGAN, Ill. - Luedee-ma Howell, 87, formerly of the Princeton area, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003.

Graveside rites will be 1 p.m. Friday at Brown cemetery, Black Lick.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Fairview Christian Community Church or the Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund.

B. Earl Mann

B. Earl Mann, 76, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at his home following a long illness.

Born Dec. 25, 1926, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Fred E. Mann and Susie Goff Mann.

Mr. Mann was a disabled veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was a retired construction worker and a member of Cranberry Community Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Frederick Earl Mann; and a sister, Lorena Sturgill.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Betty Jean Anderson Mann; a daughter, Robin Cook and her husband, Evangelist David Cook, of Naoma; a son, the Rev. Randy Mann and his wife, Tammy, of Daniels; grandchildren, Jeannie and her husband, Eric Garretson, Tina and her husband, Timmy Dickens, Robbie Mann, Chessie Mann and Jessica Mann; two great-grandchildren, Courtney Lynn Garretson and Nevaeh Lynn Dickens; a sister, Leona Scott of Monroe, N.C.; dear friend who was like a son, Allen Harper and his lovely family; and six nieces and nephews and a host of special friends and family.

Service will be 8 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Evangelist David Cook officiating. Graveside rites and burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 Honor Guard.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Alvin Harper, Earl Quesenberry, Mark Anderson, Eric Garretson, Timmy Dickens and Henry Plumley.
