Lewis Edward Gunnoe

BALLARD — Lewis Edward Gunnoe, 79, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at Kathy’s Home Care, Peterstown.

Born June 8, 1926, at Beckley, he was the son of the late Alton and Mayme Thompson Gunnoe.

Mr. Gunnoe was retired from Meadow Gold Dairy Co. at Beckley and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Asa Gunnoe.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Raines Gunnoe; a son, Douglas Gunnoe and wife, Shelia, of Greenwood, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Deanna Bradley and husband, Tim, of Peterstown; three brothers, George Alton Gunnoe and wife, Ila, of Seattle, Wash., Charles Glenn Gunnoe and wife, Velma, of MacArthur and William H. Gunnoe and wife, Patricia, of Harlem, Ga.; two sisters, Fern Johnson and husband, Earl ,of Hampton, Va., and Joyce Folk and husband, Billy, of Cordova, S.C.; five grandsons, Douglas Jr., Jeffrey and Asa Gunnoe, Dillon and Dalton Bradley; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service and burial will be 2 p.m. Friday at Ballard Baptist Church cemetery with Pastor Dave Spencer and Pastor Eugene Harmon officiating.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown.

Thomas Eldridge ‘Nat’ Housby

ALDERSON — Thomas Eldridge “Nat” Housby, 68, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, following a sudden illness while vacationing in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born June 30, 1937, at Alderson, he was the son of the late Eldridge Grayson and Gussie Jane Ballard Housby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, R. Stephen Housby.

Mr. Housby was a retired carpenter, having retired in 1988 from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Alderson, after 25 years of service. He was currently employed by Simmons Building Specialties, Alderson, was a ticket salesman for many years at the State Fair of West Virginia, Fairlea, and through his high school and early years was employed by Housby Brothers Construction, Alderson. He was a 1955 graduate of Alderson High School and attended Concord College, Athens, and West Virginia University, Morgantown. He was an active member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson, where he had served as trustee, was a member of the Methodist Men and the Aldersgate Sunday school class and was chairman of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee and served on various church boards and held various church offices over the years.

Mr. Housby was a very active member of many community organizations. He was former Mayor of the Town of Alderson, and was currently serving on Alderson City Council. He was a member and past president of the Alderson Lions Club and was chairman of the Lions Club Adopt A Highway Committee and was chairman of the annual Christmas tree sale. He assisted the Alderson Rotary Club with the annual Alderson Christmas Celebration for many years. He was co-chairman of the Alderson Fourth of July Committee and was a very active member of the Fourth of July Committee for 40 years. He was a member of Alderson Main Street, the Board of Directors of the Alderson Depot Museum, member of the Board of Directors of the Alderson Community Center for the Arts and Humanities, was a member of the Historic Alderson Memorial Bridge Restoration Committee, helped clear the land for the first Little League field at Alderson City Park and remained active with Alderson City Park over the years. He was a former member and presently an honorary member of the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department, was a former member of the Greenbrier County Planning Commission, and a former member and past president of the Greenbrier County Board of Education. Mr. Housby enjoyed metal detecting and working on “Uncle Tom’s Log Cabin” on the Greenbrier River.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Joyce Ann Weeks Housby; a son, Joseph Grayson Housby of Alderson; two daughters, Lisa Ann McGuire of Alderson and Tammy Lynn Carter and her husband, Henry, of Alderson; a sister, Sara Jane Housby McClung of Alderson; five grandchildren, Sgt. Jonathon “Craig” Housby, serving in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Drum, N.Y., soon to be deployed to Afghanistan, Pvt. Ryan Nicholas McGuire, serving in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Drum, soon to be deployed to Iraq, Thomas Joseph Bennett of Morgantown, Kara Elizabeth Bennett of Hinton and Drew Alexander McGuire of Alderson; a nephew, Neil McClung and his wife, Nikki, of Fort Spring; and he was also grandpa Tom to Kyle and Destiny Ballard of Alderson, and Kate McClung of Fort Spring; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Alderson Community Center (former Alderson High School gym) with the Rev. Sam Groves officiating. Burial will follow in Fletcher Addition of Alderson cemetery.

Friends may call for a celebration of Tom’s life from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Alderson Community Center and one hour before service Saturday at the community center.

Pallbearers will be Greg Eary, Lee Skaggs, Arnold Knapp, David Highlander, Dale Kidd, Bob Holliday, Jeff Highlander and John Eary.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Alderson Lions Club and members of the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department and EMS.

In lieu of flowers, contributions of sympathy may be made to the Housby family, c/o Linda Loudermilk, Route 2, Box 9, Alderson, WV 24910 or c/o Rev. Sam Groves, P.O. Box 560, Alderson, WV 24910.

Cassandra Jean Kessler

Cassandra Jean Kessler, 21-day-old daughter of Justin Carl and Mary Beth Honaker Kessler of Toccoa, Ga., died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

She was born Oct. 2, 2005, at Toccoa.

She was preceded in death by a paternal great-grandfather, Guy Kincaid, and maternal great-grandfathers, Creed Evans Bradshaw and Charles Honaker.

Other survivors include paternal grandparents, John C. Kessler of Ramsey and Janet Payne of Jodie; maternal grandparents, William E. Honaker of Eccles and Billie Jean Honaker of Beckley; paternal great-grandparents, Jean Kincaid of Victor and John L. and Wanda Kessler of Hico; maternal great-grandmothers, Mary Bradshaw of Shady Spring and Addie Honaker of Eccles; aunt, Buffy Slate and husband, Okey Jr., of Beckley; and uncles, Jerod Kessler of Hico, Joshua Kessler of Jodie and “Boo” Kessler of Jodie.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope First Church of God with the Rev. Joe Shaffer and the Rev. Ronnie Stapleton officiating. Burial will be at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

There will be no visitation. The family requests that any flowers be sent directly to the church.

Elizabeth Adkins, 56, of Daniels, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at home.

John W. Frock

STEPHENS CITY, Va. — John W. Frock, 41, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007.

Born Sept. 25, 1965, he was the son of Harry Frock and the late Hazel McGraw Frock.

John was self-employed as a home repairman. He was a graduate of Manassas Park High School.

John loved his family and woodworking.

In addition to his mother, John was preceded in death by brother, Kevin Frock; grandmother, Mrytle McGraw; and niece, Carrie Frock. Those left to cherish his memory include his father, Harry Franklin Frock of Manasaas, Va.; sister, Peggy Frock of Stephens City; brother, Franklin Frock of Woodbridge, Va.; sons, Wesley Dwayne Frock of Manassas Park, Va., and Dustin Ryan Frock of Manassas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Farley Hill Baptist Church.

Burial will follow at Farley Hill cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dustin Frock, Wesley Frock, Kenneth Frock, Robert Moore, Sabrina Mudery and Peggy Frock.

Albert Miller Hart

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Albert Miller Hart, 80, of 421 Lambeth Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 29, 1926, in Russell County, Va., to the late William Sr. and Ottie Bowens Hart.

Albert joined Central Baptist Church in Beckley in 1955, actively serving on the Usher Board, Missionary Board and other committees until his failing heath caused him limitations. He was a 33rd degree Prince Hall Mason.

Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Bethel Christian Church, Depot Street, Jonesborough, Tenn..

Service will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Vincent Dial, the Rev. Lester Lattany, the Rev. James Whiteside and Dr. C.H. Charlton officiating. Burial will follow at Union Grove at New Victory cemetery, Telford.

Friends may call at the residence of William Hart, 147 Berry Ridge Road, Jonesborough, or at the residence of Clara Faye Hart Rutledge.

Marrie Brewer Helton

ST. ALBANS — Marrie Brewer Helton, 60, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a brief courageous battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 19, 1946, in Beckley, Marrie was a daughter of the late G.W. “Cy” and Ella Richards Brewer. She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law, Winford Helton of Beckley.

She was formerly employed by FM 105 in media sales and was also employed at several other area radio stations in the Charleston area. Marrie was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, St. Albans. She was a 1964 graduate of Charleston High School, a 1988 graduate of West Virginia State University and attended Concord University. Marrie was an avid snow skier and loved the beach, gardening and was especially loving of her cocker spaniel.

She is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Virgil T. Helton; son, Kelly M. Helton of St. Albans; daughter and son-in-law, Meredith “Mimi” and Patrick O’Hare of Kansas City, Kan.; sister, Rebecca Larson of Woodstock, Ill; brother, Stephen Brewer of Memphis, Tenn.; granddaughters, Meagan Noel and Lauren Emily; niece and nephew and several cousins; and mother-in-law, June Helton of Beckley.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, St. Albans, with Father Rodge Wood officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans.

Maxine Prince Merrix

Maxine Prince Merrix, of Bradley, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. She was 78 years of age.

James Lee Miller, of Stover, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness. He was 79 years of age.

Carter Michael Pack

Carter Michael Pack, our beautiful baby boy, went to be with his angels in heaven on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at the age of 71/2 months following a tragic accident. Carter will be so deeply missed and loved. There will always be a void in our hearts.

Born June 5, 2006, in Beckley, he was the son of Eric and Jessica Davis Pack of Summerlee.

Survivors include a sister, Riley Pack at home; maternal grandparents, Mike and Jerri Davis of Oak Hill; paternal grandparents, Rick and Lucy Pack of Oak Hill and Kathy Pack of Maple Fork; great-grandparents, Nila Gay Richards of Oak Hill, Katherine Pack of Oak Hill and Harry and Josephine Lilly of Maple Fork; and aunts and uncles, Alicia and Luke Humphries, Carolyn Davis, Daniel Pack, James Chernutan, Crystal Chernutan and Michelle Coxs.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Sam Calloway officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Pauline Cook Rankin

PETERSTOWN — Pauline Cook Rankin, 77, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at her home.

Pauline M. Alderman

Miss Pauline M. Alderman, 86, of Beckley, died Sunday, April 8, 2007, in a local care facility of natural causes.

Born April 24, 1920, in Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel Burl and Josephine Sutphin Alderman.

Miss Alderman was a retired school teacher, having taught for one semester at Concord College, one year at Mark Twain High School and finished her teaching career at WWHS, teaching for 36 years. She was a 1938 graduate of WWHS, received her B.S. degree from Concord College in 1942 and later received her M.S. degree from WVU in 1953. Miss Alderman was a member of First Baptist Church, Beckley, and was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County.

She was preceded in death by six sisters, Bernice Alderman, Mabel Rutherford, Thelma Wills, Agnes Stemple, Wanda Griffith and Edna Haig; and a brother, Wilbur Alderman.

Miss Alderman was the last surviving of her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by three nephews, George Rutherford and wife, Jearldine, of Elizabeth, Thomas Haid and wife, Carol, of Spokane, Wash., and David Griffith of Indiana; four nieces, Carolyn Watson and husband, Ralph, of Bluemont, Va., Linda Newton and husband, Bobby, and Joan Thomas and husband, George, all of Fredericksburg, Va., and Karen Criss and husband, Charles, of West Chester, Ohio; good friend and caregiver, Robin Dunning of Beckley; and dear friend, Gene Hedrick of Beckley.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 16, at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Dr. Phil Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Monday at the funeral home.
