Charlotte June Barnette

MOUNT NEBO — Charlotte June Barnette, 62, died Thursday, April 12, 2007.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 16, at Williams cemetery, Cranberry Ridge.

Arnold Lee Bowyer

Arnold Lee Bowyer, 93, of Lake Road, Daniels, died Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.

Born March 24, 1914, at Boone, he was the son of the late Albert and Pina O’Dell Bowyer.

Mr. Bowyer will be remembered for the years he drove a bus, first for Consolidated and then for Quesenberry Bus Lines in Beckley. He also drove for Purity Maid Bread Co., and when he retired was driving for Dr Pepper Bottling Co. He was an active member of First Baptist Church and the Fellowship Class, where he could be seen every Sunday morning handing out bulletins.

For many years after retirement, he cut the grass and maintained the common area at Blue Jay Lake, where he lived. He was an active member of the Blue Jay Lake Association and also of the Association at Whidden MHP, Frostproof, Fla., where he spent his winters for 20 years.

Mr. Bowyer was a great storyteller and particularly loved to tell about the charter trips he drove for Glenn Sallack and the WWHS band and for Coach Van Meter’s football team. He enjoyed watching his hummingbirds and filled many feeders for them every day. He was a friend to everyone and will be remembered for his smile and his quick wit.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Helen Bailey Bowyer, who died in 1998; his sisters, Velma Vass, Juanita Parker and Billie Bowyer; and brothers, Atlee and Bob Bowyer.

Mr. Bowyer is survived by his children, Nancy Keatley and husband, Hugh, of Beckley, Jim Bowyer and wife, Inga, of Dallas, Texas, and Mike Bowyer and wife, Joyce, of Mound City, Kan. Also surviving are grandchildren, Randy Keatley and wife, Karen, of Charlotte, N.C., Sue DeValdes and husband, Greg, of Virginia Beach, Va., Beth Keatley and Greg McGraw of Daniels and Drew Bowyer of Mound City, Kan.; great-grandchildren, John and Joey DeValdes and David and Hallie Keatley; and a sister-in-law, Mary Bowyer of Staunton, Va. He is also survived by a special friend, Elsie Cochran of Daniels, and her family and many friends and neighbors, especially Martha Callaway and George and Judy Smith.

Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary, Beckley, with Dr. Phil Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mildred Lois Farley

Mildred Lois Farley, 90, of Maple Fork, formerly of Ghent, died Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a short illness.

Born at Meadows of Dan, Va., on Feb. 16, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Pearl McPeake.

Mrs. Farley was a homemaker and had lived most of her life in West Virginia, having lived the past three years at Maple Fork. She was of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Farley was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Farley; daughter, Lois Saranzak; grandson, Jamie Farley; granddaughters, Donna Marie Farley and Sue Ann Ray; and a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Farley.

Survivors include sons, Woodrow W. Farley Jr. of Mullens and Daniel Monroe Farley and wife, Barbara, of Mullens; daughters, Connie Ray of Maple Fork, Reva Graham and husband, Mike, of Bensalem, Pa., and Judy Smith and husband, Terry, of Cool Ridge; 13 grandchildren, Cheri Riggs, whom she reared, John Murphy, Cheryl Poff, Jalaynna Graham, Patricia Cook, Theresa DeGuiseppi, Tracy Klotz, Danny Farley Jr., Rusty Ray, Marsha Terry, Libby Sargent, Bethann Buckland and Beckley Heath; 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by sisters-in-law, stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, cousins, nephews, nieces and a number of other family members and friends.

A dedication of her life will be 11 a.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring Chapel, with the Rev. Gerald Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be John Murphy, Rusty Ray, Danny Farley Jr., Frank Cook, Kyle Heath and Martin Sargent.

Vivian Hairston

Vivian Hairston, 87, of Raleigh, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Ruby Lee McDaniel

God saw you were getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you and whispered “come to Me.” With tearful eyes we watched you pass away, and although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard-working hands now rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.

Ruby Lee McDaniel, 84, of Indian Mills, died at 4:15 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2007, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea following a long illness.

Born May 16, 1922, at Mandeville, she was the daughter of the late Jasper Jarrett and Nora Vee Noble Foster.

Mrs. McDaniel was a lifelong resident of Indian Mills. She was retired from the former Hinton Hospital where she worked many years helping heal others. She was a member of Roles Chapel Baptist Church at Forest Hill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred McDaniel, in June 1985; a daughter, Iva Joyce, in January 1947; a sister, Bertha Jones; and a brother, Carl Foster.

Survivors include her children, Edward Foster and wife, Joan, of Berkeley Springs and Fred McDaniel and wife, Patricia, of Hinton; a brother, James Foster of Wheeling; four granddaughters, Vicky Williamson and husband, Harry, of Berkeley Springs, Susan Stippey and husband, Donnie, of Berkeley Springs, Christy Franklin and husband, David, of Martinsburg and Lori Bennett and husband, Tim, of Indian Mills; three grandsons, Barney Foster and wife, Valeria, of Maryland, Billy Foster of Beckley and David McDaniel and wife, Debbie, of Wilmington, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren and a stepgreat-grandchild.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Jeff Canterbury officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park, Hinton.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Charles Moody

On Tuesday, April 10, 2007, Charles Moody of Sophia umpired the girls’ softball game at Independence High School. On Wednesday morning, April 11, the Good Lord called “Moody” to be his umpire in heaven. He was in his 80th year.

Born Aug. 22, 1926, in Mabscott, he was the son of the late William and Ardenia Thompson Moody.

Mr. Moody was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was an employee of National Security and a disabled coal miner after working for Stotesbury and Slab Fork Coal Companies for 25 years. He was a member of Mabscott Holiness Church.

Mr. Moody was a Little League umpire for 50 years-plus and an SSAC football and basketball referee, and softball and baseball umpire for 60-plus years. He loved Independence High School athletics and all other Raleigh County school athletic programs. There wasn’t a ballgame he didn’t thoroughly enjoy. He was an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, William “Buck” Moody, Donald P. Moody Sr. and Dillard Moody; and two sisters, Alyese Moody and Marjorie Moody Meadows.

Survivors include his wife, Regina Beatrice Bolen Moody; three sons, C. Darrell Moody and wife, Becki, of Flat Top, Rodney Moody and wife, Connie, of Sophia and Richard Moody and wife, Susan, also of Sophia; grandchildren, Grayson Moody of Sophia, Barbara Moody Wood of Barboursville and Charlie Moody of Crab Orchard; great-grandchildren, Sarah Marie Wood of Barboursville, Michael Shane Moody of Tampa, Fla., Amber Woody of Shady Spring and Jessica Crook of Crab Orchard; great-great-grandson, Landon Nicholas Moody of Tampa; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Mabscott Holiness Church with the Pastor E.G. “Buzz” Keller officiating. Interment will be in Hot Coal cemetery, Sophia.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Moody, Morris Niday, Jim Kirk, James Meadows, Terry Poe, Roy Johnson, Joe Goddard and Scotty Cuthbert. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Grim, Ricky Potter and Ronnie Thompson.

Phyllis June Lewis Roop

DOTHAN — Phyllis June Lewis Roop, 73, died Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born May 31, 1933, at Katherine, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Nina Ayers Lewis.

She was a homemaker. Phyllis loved butterflies.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ray “Bucky” Roop Sr.; daughter, Donna G. McClung; two brothers, Jack and Alton Lewis; and two sisters, Louise Lattie and Drema Dare.

Surviving are the family she loved so much — her sons, James R. Roop Jr. of Dothan and Jeremy McClung and wife, Shirley, of Columbus, Ohio; four brothers, Willard Lewis and wife, Charlene, of Pamana City, Fla., Pannell Lewis and wife, Patti, of Wyoming, Bill Lewis and wife, Kathy, of Adrian, Mich., and Rabon Lewis and wife, Dottie, of Somerset, N.J.; six sisters, Dora Vest of Midway, Sally Ellis of Fort Pierce, Fla., Joan Terry and husband, Charles, of Sun, Joy Dobbs and husband, Al, of Sun, Judy Sheehan and husband, Vincent, of Oak Hill and Diane McKinney and husband, Danny, of Oak Hill; sister-in-law, Linda Lewis of Willis, Mich.; and a grandson, Linus Roop of Dothan.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Dothan Community Church.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Jessie Parker officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Myrtle Odell Smallwood

Myrtle Odell Smallwood, 95, of 119 Washington Ave., Beckley, died at 9:09 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2007, at SunBridge Pine Lodge Care and Rehabilitation following a long illness.

Born June 19, 1911, at Wardford, she was a daughter of the late Tillis Walker and Ethel J. Haynes Walker.

Mrs. Smallwood was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Baptist Temple.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Smallwood; and brother, Herbert Walker.

Survivors include a sister, Katie Riley of Beckley; a niece, Belinda Bradford of Grand Prairie, Texas; and nephew, James Simon of Youngstown, Ohio.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Baptist Temple, 129 Rice St., Beckley, with the Rev. Walter Leach officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Monday at the church.

Arrangements entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Jane Marshall Smith

Jane Marshall Smith of North Vance Drive, Beckley, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Lucy Bowers Hospice House.

Ivan Gerald ‘Jerry’ Sparks

MCROSS — Ivan Gerald “Jerry” Sparks, 62, of McRoss, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at the Beckley VA Medical Center following a short illness.

Born at Charmco on Jan. 17, 1945, he was the son of the late Norman M. Sparks Sr. and Elizabeth Fleshman Sparks.

Mr. Sparks was a retired coal miner, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He had made his home in the Rainelle area for over 25 years.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Maynard Lester Sparks.

Survivors include sisters, Norma Jean Crookshanks of Rainelle and Elizabeth Ann Childers of Quinwood; brothers, Norman M. Sparks Jr. of Orange Park, Fla., Thomas Robert Sparks of Petersburg, Va., and Gary Wayne Sparks of LaVale, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no service or visitation.

Violet Amos

COTTLE — Violet Amos, 87, of Cottle, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 19, 2007.

Graveside funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the West Virginia Memorial Gardens at Calvin. Friends may call noon until 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the White Funeral Home at Craigsville.
