Clarence ‘Pete’ Lynwood Craft Sr.

OAK HILL — Clarence “Pete” Lynwood Craft Sr., 80, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at his home.

Hazel Webb Davidson

HINTON — Hazel Webb Davidson, 82, of 411 Johnson St., Hinton, died at noon Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at her home.

Born Feb. 13, 1925, at Bertha, she was the daughter of the late Robert Eugene and Blanche Saunders Webb.

Hazel attended Hinton High School and graduated from Covington High School in Covington, Va., in 1941. She graduated from Concord College at Athens, with a B.S. in education in 1946, and received a master’s degree from West Virginia University in 1948. Her career included 34 years of teaching with Summers County Schools as well as several summers at the Concord College Teacher Training School and also with the Summers County Head Start program. She was a life member of the National Education Association and also was a member of the West Virginia Education Association, the Summers County Association of Retired School Employees, the American Association of University Women, the Business & Professional Women’s Club, the Wednesday Club of Hinton, the Service Club, the Delphi Club and the Hinton Woman’s Club. She served on the Summers County Public Library board as treasurer from 1981 until 2005. She was a member of Friends of the Library, the Adult Book Discussion Group and the Summers County Hospital Auxiliary. She was active in many other community activities and attended the Presbyterian Church in Hinton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude S. Davidson Jr., on Sept. 26, 1996.

One brother, Robert Edward Webb, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, William R. “Randy” Davidson and wife, Rogena, of Athens, Ga.; a granddaughter, Andrea Davidson of Athens, Ga.; two sisters, Lucille Bennett of Hinton and Neva Larson and husband, Richard, of Saline, Mich.; brother-in-law, Eugene Foster of Fayetteville; two sisters-in-law, Kay Webb of Charlotte, N.C., and Beulah “Katie” Davidson of Oak Hill; and two nephews, Scott Larson and wife, Betsy, of Lake Bluff, Mich., and Rick Webb of Charlotte.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. Robert Glaser officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park, Hinton.

Friends may call noon until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Summers County Public Library Memorial & Endowment Fund.

Baxter ‘Wayne’ Griffith

SPARTA, Tenn. — Baxter Wayne Griffith “Wayne,” 58, of Sparta and White Sulphur Springs, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 13, 2007, in Sparta as a result of an automobile accident.

Wayne was born Aug. 26, 1948, up Tuckahoe Road in White Sulphur Springs and was the eldest child born to Curtis and Lucille Allen Griffith. His paternal grandparents were Bernard and Ada Lawhorn Griffith and maternal grandparents were Will and Ada Church Allen. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bernard William Griffith, and two infant siblings, James and Donna Griffith.

Having worked many years in the construction industry in Geneva, Ohio, Wayne was a retired member of Laborers Local 496. More recently he and his wife operated a restaurant and catering business in Crossville and Sparta.

Wayne was raised in Pentecostal Holiness Church on Ingleside Avenue, White Sulphur Springs. He was always proud of his roots in West Virginia and often looked forward to coming back home to “Almost Heaven.” Along with his dad and brothers, he was a caddy at The Greenbrier hotel in his teen years. He later became an avid golfer.

Those left to mourn and cherish him include his wife, Michelle Agritta Griffith, and her son, Joshua Krause, both of Sparta; father-in-law, Jack Shreves of Sparta; two daughters, Michelle Griffith and Nicole Griffith, both of Clarksburg; two granddaughters, Mariah Jo Griffith and Sierra Sue Griffith, also of Clarksburg; a son, James Curtis Griffith of Hammond, Ind.; four sisters, Betty B. Griffith-Craft, Linda L. Griffith, Sandra J. Griffith, and Marguerite A. Griffith, all of White Sulphur Springs; three brothers, Baxter C. Griffith Jr. and Larry L. Griffith, both of White Sulphur Springs, and Harvey P. Griffith of Covington, Va.; an uncle, William Wyatt Allen of White Sulphur Springs; 29 nephews and nieces and numerous cousins.

After service Friday in Sparta, Wayne’s body will be brought back to his hometown in White Sulphur Springs. A wake and visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at Shanklin Funeral Home. A song, scripture reading and prayer will be led by Wayne’s niece, Debbie Griffith-Depriest, and his nephew Anthony Griffith.

Final service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Pentecostal Church on Ingleside Avenue with Pastor Gene Sizemore officiating.

Interment will follow at Hillcrest cemetery with the release of white flights concluding the graveside service.

Pallbearers will be Alfonso Calhoun, Robbie Black, William Griffith, Jason Griffith, Bernard Mines, Andy Griffith, Anthony Griffith and Joshua Maddy.

Family and friends may call any time at the home of his sister, Mrs. Betty B. Griffith-Craft on Big Draft Road in White Sulphur Springs.

Final arrangements have been entrusted to Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, and Thurman Funeral Home, Sparta.

Iris N. Hendrix

Iris Novella Manning Hendrix of Crab Orchard died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, in a Beckley hospital following a sudden illness. She was in her 78th year.

Born July 1, 1928, in Saxon, she was the daughter of the late Roy Johnson and Ella Burleson Manning.

Mrs. Hendrix was a 1946 graduate of Trap Hill High School. She also graduated from Beckley College and from Morris Harvey College in 1972 with a degree in teaching. She worked as a teacher for the Raleigh County Board of Education for over 20 years. Mrs. Hendrix was a devoted member of Crab Orchard Church of Brethren. In her leisure time she enjoyed flower gardening and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 52 years, James A. Hendrix, on Feb. 10, 2003, and her son-in-law, Harry Lee Pierce, in October 1988.

Survivors include her children, Michael Hendrix and wife, Jane, of Crab Orchard, Debbie Pierce and husband, Kenneth Murdock, of Soak Creek and Paul Hendrix and wife, Celeste, of Old Eccles Road; grandchildren, Kimberly and Chris Hendrick of Princewick, Steven and Michelle Pierce of Soak Creek, Melanie and William Moore of Alderson, James Paul Hendrix and Jaret Lane, both of Old Eccles Road, Joel McKinney of Fort Ashby, Leah Hendrix of Raleigh, N.C., and Chris and Teresa Hendrix of Louisburg, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Christopher and Karlee Hendrick, Emily Pierce, Makennah and Landon Moore, Destin Hendrix, Forrest Plyer and Phoenix Mangum; her special caregiver and friend Janet Daniel of Bolt; a brother-in-law Clinton Hendrix and wife, Joan, of Sheffield Village, Ohio; sister-in-law, Norma Lee Webb and husband, Howard, of Oak Harbor, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Jim Lucas officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — Irene Hodge, 82, of Pembroke Pines, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at Memorial West Hospital in Pembroke Pines.

Mildred C. Keffer

OAK HILL — Mildred C. Keffer, 89, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born Sept. 3, 1917, at Cannelton, she was the daughter of the late Omer Riffle and Carrie Stewart Riffle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther “Bud” Keffer; and a sister, Irene Johnson.

Mildred was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Oak Hill, and was a retired dressmaker.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sisters, Welma Emeline of Cannelton, Helen Rogers of Petersburg, Frances Steele of Dayton, Ohio, and Loretta Jackson of Goodridge, Mich.; and a brother, Johnny Riffle of Oak Hill.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today and where service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Charles Leonard Lindsay

DANESE — In loving memory of a wonderful husband, and loving father, Charles Leonard Lindsay, 75, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2007, due to a long illness.

Born Aug. 4, 1931, at Pineville, he was a son of the late Michael and Katherine Baugh.

Mr. Lindsay was a coal miner and farmer and had served in the U.S. military. He was of the Holiness faith.

Survivors include his wife, Effie Sue Highlander Lindsay; seven daughters, Vicki Bailey and husband, Darrell, of Mullens, Patricia Gibson and husband, Robert, of Quinwood, Mildred Bostic of Charmco, Michelle Goddard of Hollywood, Md., Vera Getsie and husband, Andrew, of Fort Wayne, Ind., Charlene Katherine Lindsay of Danese and Effie Bibb and husband, Keith, of Oak Hill; a son, Charles Lindsay and wife, Nancy, of Fairdale; four adopted children, Eric, Ana, Brenden and Gwinn Lindsay of Danese; a sister, Margaret Stevenson and husband, Ralph, of Concord, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and cherishing his memory, Jordan, Mason and Stephan Bowen of Putnam County.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. James Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Lindsay Family cemetery, Danese, with the release of White Flights doves.

Pallbearers will include George Campbell, Robert Gibson, Keith Bibb, Tony Martin, Charles Emerson Terry and Mason Bowen.

Friends may call two hours before service at the funeral home. There will be no evening visitation.

Clarence Michael Mills

Clarence Michael Mills, 57, of Beckley, passed away at Charleston Area Medical Center on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, following a short illness.

Mike is survived by his parents, William C. “Buddy” and Shirley Farley Mills of Catlettsburg, Ky. (formerly of Blue Jay Six Road in Cool Ridge); a son, Douglas B. Mills and his wife, Christy, of Concord, N.C.; a daughter, Amanda JoAnn Cloonan and her husband, Jeremy, of Daniels; a nephew, Jeremy T. Mills of Grand Cayman Island; his former wife and friend, Connie A. Mills of Beaver; and five grandchildren, Ethan, Alyssa and Madelynn Mills, and J.D and Taylor Cloonan.

Mike was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda JoAnn Mills.

Mike was a 1968 graduate of Shady Spring High School. He worked as a lineman for R.H. Bouligny, as a truck driver for Tamroy Mining and Pocahontas Coal, and as an electrical worker for Bayliss and Ramey.

During Mike’s tenure with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, he worked in Ohio, West Virginia and North Carolina. Upon retirement three years ago Mike returned to the Beckley area to live.

Mike was a loving son, father and grandfather. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time in the woods and hunting with his children. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who brought so much joy to his life. Mike will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring, with Preacher Delmas Cox officiating. The viewing will be 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

David Morgan

PETERSTOWN — David Morgan, 52, passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Donna Jean Nelson

Donna Jean Nelson, 76, of Fairdale, went to be with her Lord and Savior at Mount Carmel-St. Anne’s Hospital in Westerville, Ohio, on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, surrounded by her loving family. She was born at Gill, and was the daughter of the Rev. Andrew Adkins and Daisy Cooper Adkins.

Donna was a born again Christian, a loving wife and a wonderful mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gospel music, taking walks, working in her garden and spending time with her family. Donna had been a Christian for 59 years and was a member of Fairdale Freewill Baptist Church for 40 years. Donna was preceded in death by a grandson, Rex Lane Farmer Jr.; her parents; five brothers, Willard, Billy, Bo, Roland and Dencil; and four sisters, Nellie, Dessie, Muriel and Beulah.

Those left to love and cherish wonderful memories include her husband of almost 61 years, Homer; two daughters, Darlene and husband, Scott Hutchinson, of Westerville and Nola and husband, Rex Farmer, of Fairdale; two sons, Gary and wife, Mary Nelson, of Newark, Ohio, and Dennis and wife, Vicky Nelson, of Centerburg, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Scott Hutchinson and wife, Kelly, Debbie Showalter and husband, Todd, Jessica Perone and husband, Johnny, Pamela Farmer, Andy and wife, Shana, Melodie, Luke and Isaac Nelson; eight great-grandchildren, Ethan, Meghan and Emma Hutchinson, Austin and Andrea Showalter, Treyvan, Kelsey and Jackson Nelson; and a sister, Lois Prit-chard of Alcoa, Tenn.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Fairdale Freewill Baptist Church with her grandson, Scott Hutchinson, Pastor Dean Adams and former pastors Daniel Legg and Bobby Carter officiating.

Pallbearers will be trustees and deacons of the church, Randy Honaker, Ted Hamb, Bob Bower, Richard Browning, Wallace Maynard and Bob Cole.

The family will receive friends one hour before service at the church.

Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Roland Arthur Newton

Roland Arthur Newton of Berlin Court, Beckley, passed away Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at the Beckley VA Medical Center following a long illness. He was 71 years of age.

Cherle Dianne Pettinaro

LAYLAND — Cherle Dianne Pettinaro, 57, of Chestnut Knob Road, formerly of Waterford, Mich., passed away Wednesday night, Feb. 14, 2007, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.

Born July 27, 1949, at Flint, Mich., she was a daughter of the late Joe and Thelma Whittaker. She had worked as an assembly worker for General Motors, was a homemaker and of the Christian faith.

Survivors include her husband, Howard William Pettinaro; three sons, Todd Lueck and wife, Laura, of Troy, Mich., Chad Lueck and companion, Virginia Parker, of Waterford and Jody Lueck and wife, Kun, of Clarkston, Mich.; a stepson, Michael Pettinaro and companion, Becky Wheeler, of Rochester, Mich.; stepdaughter, Lynn Olsen and husband, Nels, of Pontiac, Mich.; two brothers, Bob Ford and wife, Betty, of Fenton, Mich., and Don Ford and wife, Laurie, of White Lake, Mich.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Pat and Kay, Phyllis and Jim, Sandy and Stewart, Susan and Lloyd, and Bill and Bobby; nine grandchildren who were the light of her life, Kendra, Ashly, Jacob, T.J., Keeton, Blake, Erica, Katie and C.J.; special friends, Connie Howitt and Marsha Redden; and faithful feline companion, EZ.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Chestnut Knob Baptist Church, Layland, with the Rev. Floyd Bolen officiating. Burial will follow at Layland cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.
