Suzanne Rhea

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Suzanne Rhea, 80, a resident of Creekside, the community in White Sulphur Springs at The Greenbrier, died at her residence early Wednesday morning, Oct. 19, 2005, of natural causes.

Mrs. Rhea was formerly of New York City; she and her late husband were among the first residents of the Creekside community.

Born Jan. 31, 1925, in Long Beach, Calif., she was the daughter of the late George and Dorothy Doyle Menocal.

Known as a “Gentlelady” socially, she was a supporter of many organizations and charities which she favored. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in the Spa City and being an avid reader she enjoyed her visits and patronage to the White Sulphur Springs Public Library. Even when her health prohibited her from visiting the library, she sent someone to get audiobooks for her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alexander D. Rhea III, who died Sept. 1, 2000, and her beloved son, Mark Alexander Rhea.

Survivors include a brother, Martin Menocal, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Rhea, and a cousin, Jacquie Banks Field, all of Texas.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, White Sulphur Springs, with the Rev. Keith butler officiating.

Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

Jean Willard Burns Rowe

ALDERSON — Jean Willard Burns Rowe, 90, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at the Brier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Ronceverte, following a long illness.

Born Dec. 25, 1914, in Kanawha County, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Gilmer and Jean Reese Burns. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard James Rowe Jr.; a son, David Hoffman Rowe; a sister, Carroll Burns Chelis, and two brothers, Bobby Burns and Lambert Burns.

Mrs. Rowe retired from the Federal Reformatory For Women, Alderson. She was a member of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, was a former member of the Woman’s Club of Alderson and the Alderson Bridge Club.

Survivors include a son, Howard James Rowe III, and daughter-in-law, Patricia J. Rowe, of Richmond, Va.; a grandson, John David Rowe and his wife, Cheryl, of Richmond; a granddaughter, Kristi R. Merritt of Richmond; three great-grandsons, Robert James Merritt, David Preston Rowe and John Michael Rowe, all of Richmond; a sister, Phyllis B. Bosserman of Covington, Va.; and a brother, Lewis Burns and his wife, Eleanor, of Powhatan, Va.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, with the Rev. Alvie Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Old Greenbrier Baptist cemetery, Alderson.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson, and one hour before service Friday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Bill Bryant, Bob Holliday, Steve Keadle, Todd Hanger, John McCurdy and Mark Ballard.

Contributions of sympathy may be made to Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, P.O. Box 456, Alderson, WV 24910.

Joshua Lee Shutt

PRINCETON — Joshua Lee Shutt, 18, of the Halls Ridge Road, Princeton died early Monday morning, Oct. 24, 2005, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital from injuries received following an automobile accident.

Born Jan. 20, 1987, at Bluefield, he was the son of Edward Lee and Linda Meadows Shutt of Halls Ridge Road near Princeton.

Josh was a graduate of Princeton Senior High School, Class of 2004, and was currently a freshman attending Virginia Tech, Blacksburg Va.

Josh was active in sports while attending Mercer Christian Academy, PikeView and Princeton High School. While at Princeton, he was a member of the soccer team during his junior and senior years. He was a member of the yearbook and newspaper staff and was technical editor of the yearbook. He ran cross country and track and played basketball for Mercer Christian Academy and PikeView. Josh was listed in Who’s Who Among High School Students in America. He was a member of Johnston Chapel Baptist Church and a member of the Youth Group.

Josh was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Herman M. Meadows and Kelly E. Shutt, along with an uncle, Herman “Buddy” Meadows.

Survivors include his loving and devoted parents, Ed and Linda Shutt; a sister, Kimberlee Renee Stephenson and husband, Justin, of Charles Town; grandmothers, Emogene Meadows, and Arvenia W. Shutt, both of Princeton; aunts and uncles, Barbara Shutt of Roanoke, Va., Sam Shutt and wife, Sally, of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Charles D. Meadows and David M. Meadows, both of Princeton; several cousins, nephews, nieces and other family members; his girlfriend, Mikki White of Beckley; his true friend, Brittany Reed of Princeton; and his special dog, Jasmine, and cat, Spotty.

At 1 p.m. today, we will celebrate the life of Josh Shutt from Johnston Chapel Baptist Church, Halls Ridge Road near Princeton, with Pastors John King, Jim Simmons, Kevin Shirey, Jim Nofsinger and Mike McGraw officiating. Entombment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton.

Friends called 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton, and may call one hour before service today at the church.

The soccer team at Princeton Senior High School will serve as pallbearers, Joseph Carter, Jonathon Lusk, Hunter Loophole, Josh Honaker, Morgan Beckett and Wissan Bizri.

Helen Rose Skaggs

VICTOR — Helen Rose Skaggs, 78, of Victor, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at Plateau Medical Center following a long illness.

Born Dec. 7. 1926, at Jodie, she was the daughter of the late Gaymond Golden and Norah Virginia Ewing Preast.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil L. Skaggs, on May 10, 2001, to whom she had been married for over 50 years.

Survivors include her brothers, William Edward Preast and Hazel of Goldsboro, N.C., Ralph Damon Preast and Frances of Russellville and Gaymond G. Preast and Judy of Cheney, Wash.; a sister, Betty Jean Preast Hahn and Joe of Bath, Maine, and Largo, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, Byrl Skaggs of Fredricksburg, Va.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at The Chapel of Rest Mausoleum, Victor, with Pastor Greg Auxier officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted.

Muriel Naab Spataro

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. — Muriel Naab Spataro, 82, formerly of Crag, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, in Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital following a long illness.

Joan Carol Farley Stephenson

ELON, N. C. — Joan Carol Farley Stephenson, 58, of 297 Woodland Drive, passed away Sunday Oct. 23, 2005, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Shady Spring, she was wife of the Rev. Robert W. “Bob” Stephenson and daughter of Willie Berman Farley Jr. and the late Regina Dell Sweeney Farley.

She was employed as a business manager with IBM and was a member of Riverside Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Robert W. “Bob” Stephenson; son, Mark W. Stephenson of Burlington, N.C.; father, Willie Berman Farley Jr. of Beaver; and brothers, Wayne D. Farley and wife, Brenda, of Shady Spring and Norman R. Farley and wife, Sandra, of Canton, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Joan was committed to her faith in Jesus Christ and found the greatest joy in serving others. With limited formal musical training, Joan became an accomplished pianist serving for over 43 years as pianist in four different churches. She approached any task given her, whether in the business place or church with the highest level of commitment possible, completing each task as if God were her supervisor.

Service was 2 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Baptist Church, Graham, N.C., by Rev. Bill Rice and Rev. Curtis Oakley. Interment was in Magnolia cemetery, Elon, N.C.

Memorials may be made to Riverside Baptist Church PIF Fund; 1568 E. Harden St., Graham, NC 27253.

Ellis Ray Stewart

DUBLIN, Va. — Ellis Ray Stewart, 85, of State Park Road, Dublin, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005.

Born Feb. 20, 1920, at Jesse, he was the son of the late George Dewey and Bernice Miller Stewart

He was preceded in death by two sons, Benny Joe Stewart and Larry Eugene Stewart; and two brothers, Warren Gilbert Stewart and Charles Stewart.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and was a member of VFW Post No. 133 of Pineville. He attended the First Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Pearl Burgess Stewart; sons and daughters-in-law, Wilburn Ray and Virginia Stewart of Dublin, Donald Lee and Kathy Stewart of Salisbury, N.C., and Timothy Ray and Belinda Stewart of Winston-Salem, N.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Patty Joyce and Patrick Grygiel of Cottondale, Ala., and Susan Pauline Britton of Pineville; five grandchildren, Diana Lynn Phillips, Deborah Louise Tabor, Timothy Ray Stewart, James Donald Stewart and Michael Scott Britton; seven great-grandchildren, Bradley Phillips, Andrew Phillips, Megan Stewart, Anna Paige Stewart, Travis Tabor, Jarred Tabor and Cody Stewart; brother and sister-in-law, Carl D. and wife, Zelma Stewart, of Jesse; and sisters and brother-in-law, Annalee and Robert Nutter of Okeechobee, Fla., Helen Allen of Columbus, Ohio, and Glady Starner of Columbus.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bobwhite Blvd., Pulaski, Va., with the Revs. Edward Smith and David Mumpower officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, where the VFW Post No. 133 of Pineville will conduct full military honors.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Doris Aaron

On Wednesday, May 9, 2007, Doris Aaron went to be with the Lord at the Lucy Bowers Hospice House. She was 73 years of age.

Born Doris Ann Riley on June 18, 1933 in Rhodell, she was one of three children born to the late Martin Leonard and Marion Elizabeth Mann Riley.

Doris moved to Beckley in 1937, where she graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1951. She married Duon “Duke” Aaron on Dec. 30, 1955; Duon died on June 1, 1985. Doris worked at People’s Life Insurance Co. until 1961; with the birth of her first son, she became a caring and loving mother from that time on.

Doris was a member of First Baptist Church for 50 years, where she was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. A dedicated volunteer at the Helping Hands Community Resource Center, she worked there from 1989 to 2006. Doris Aaron will be remembered as a caring, loving, compassionate and hard-working individual who was always willing to give a helping hand. In her leisure time she like to quilt and spend time with her grandchildren.

Doris was the beloved mother of Craig Aaron and his wife, Carol, of Morgantown and Glen Aaron and his companion, Judy, of Charleston; the loving grandmother of Christopher, Caitlyn, Steven and Stephanie; the dear sister of Patty Richmond and David Riley and his wife, Ruby, all of Beckley; the fond sister-in-law of Rebecca Aaron of Beckley, Jeanette Murray of Matthews, Va., and Ann Aaron of Birmingham, Ala.; several neices and nephews also survive.

Service will be 1 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Dr. Phil Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may noon until time of the service.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored by memorial donations to the Lucy Bowers Hospice House, P. O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802

Lloyd P. Bennett

JUMPING BRANCH — Lloyd P. Bennett, 56, died at 9:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Born April 2, 1951, in Beckley, he was the son of the late James and Thelma Biars Bennett.

Lloyd was a disabled Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He had risen to the rank of sergeant and had served two tours of duty.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie and Florence, and a brother, James Bennett.

He is survived by a son, William Paul Bennett of Jumping Branch; a daughter, Cathryn Rebecca Parrish of Jumping Branch; his former wife, Joyce Ann Bennett of Jumping Branch; a grandson, John Michael Parrish, and two granddaughters, Kallista Shultze and Angel Parrish, all of Jumping Branch.

His body has been cremated and there will be no service.

James Eugene Cadle, 78, of Beckley, died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
