Barbara Ann Patterson

Barbara Ann Patterson, 70, of Shady Spring, died at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at her home following a long illness.

Born March 17, 1935, at Hix, she was the daughter of the late James Lacy Cales and Eunna Richmond Cales.

Mrs. Patterson was a homemaker. She attended Trinity Baptist Church and was a volunteer at the Beckley VA Medical Center. She lived in Hix from 1970 to 1994 and made Shady Spring her home since 1994.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Clyde Patterson, and a brother, “Bud” Cales.

Survivors include a son, James Patterson and fiancée, Peggy, of Beckley; daughters, Mildred Sue Rhodes and husband, James, of Shady Spring and Carolyn Bennett and husband, Lonnie, of Ballard; three brothers, James Buford Cales of Hinton, Nilon Hunter Cales of Greensboro, N.C., and Vernon Dale Cales of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Mildred Maxine Bennett of Cleveland; and grandchildren, Jesse Bennett, Daniel Bragg, Justin Bennett, William Bragg, Barbara Bennett, Jessica Maxwell, Travis and James Rhodes Jr.

Service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at James Chapel, Clintonville, with Brother Danny Winders officiating. Burial will follow in Henson cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Bennett, Warren Bennett, Neal Bennett, David Cales, Lonnie Hughes and Dan Robertson.

R. Bruce Richmond

HILLDALE — R. Bruce Richmond, 68, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at his home following a sudden illness.

Born Sept. 5, 1937, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Patty McCallister Richmond.

Bruce was retired from Celanese Corp. in Narrows, Va., with 39 years of service. He was a 1955 graduate of Hinton High School and was a lifelong resident of Hinton. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hinton, where he was Sunday school superintendent, provided “Children’s Moment” during Sunday worship service and served on the Finance Committee. Bruce started the Awana program at First Baptist and also sang in the choir.

Survivors include his wife, Laura West Richmond; a son, Ricky Clinebell of Hinton; three daughters, Becca Blackmon of Charlottesville, Va., Mary Pat Jones and husband, Eugene, of Meadow Creek and Lori Beth Richmond-Vance and husband, Jerami, of Wahiawai, Hawaii; six grandchildren, Missy Lowe, Quito Clinebell, Hannah Blackmon, Bailey Richmond-Vance, Cami Richmond-Vance and Luke Jones, his greatly anticipated grandson; and two great-grandchildren, Gage and Starr Lowe.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Hinton, with Pastor Ronald Cobb and the Rev. D.D. Elwell officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park, Hinton.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Pivont Funeral Home, Hinton, and one hour before service Saturday at the church.

Ruby B. Sandige

LEWISBURG — Ruby B. Sandige, 87, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Lorena Martha Seabolt

CRAIGSVILLE — Lorena Martha Seabolt, 82, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Locust Grove Baptist Church, Woodbine Road, Craigsville. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood.

Randall L. Snyder

Randall Layne Snyder, 45, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of Maxwell Hill, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at his home of natural causes.

Fredrick M. Thorne

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, Freddy Thorne died peacefully at the home of Bill and Patty Browskey. He was in his 79th year.

Born Fredrick Munson Thorne at Thayer on June 1, 1926, he was the son of the late Fredrick M. and Willie Ellen Davis Thorne.

Freddy spent his childhood at McKendree. He was a graduate of Mount Hope School. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Santee. He would later serve his country again in the Korean Conflict. After his stint in service, Freddy settled in Bradley, working as a Raleigh County sheriff and eventually was elected as a constable for the county. His work in county government led to a position with the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Freddy would retire in 1988 as an appraiser from the assessor’s office of Odell Jessup.

A resident of Munson Drive since 1975, Freddy was a devoted member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church on Virginia Street.

An avid fan of the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles and WVU Mountaineers, Freddy and his beloved wife, Fay, traveled extensively to away games for both schools. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and stepfather, father-in-law and a dear grandfather.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fay Lusk Thorne, on June 26 of this year; three sisters, Lakie Thorne, Thelma Shrewsbury and Katie Stanley; and two brothers, Estel and Rova Thorne.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Cook of Roanoke, Va.; a stepson, E.C. “Tony” Lusk and his wife, Jeannie, of Huntington; a stepdaughter, Patty Browskey and her husband, Bill, of Beckley; seven grandchildren, Jay Cook and his wife, Kelli, Erin Burks and her husband, Grant, Stephanie Wood and her husband, Allen, Kim Howell, Kevin Lusk and his wife, Tammy, Kenny Lusk and his wife, Shelia, and Kerry Lusk; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Lucille Larimore of Columbia, S.C., and a large extended family; his good neighbors, the Barbara Mackey and George Soltes families.

The Burial of the Dead, Rite One with the Holy Eucharist, will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 200 Virginia St., Beckley, with Revs. Eric Miller and Roy Crist as celebrants.

Friends may call 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. Private burial will follow at a later time in St. Stephens Columbarium.

Pallbearers will be George Soltes, Jimmy Mackey, Chalkey Mackey, Jay Cook, Doss Howell and Jim Larimore.

Donations of sympathy may be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church; Attn: Gene Neil Memorial Capitol Improvement Fund; 700 Virginia St., Beckley, WV 25801.

Ruth Thomasson Warren

ALDERSON — Ruth Tho-masson Warren, 93, formerly of Charleston, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at her home following a short illness.

Melcenia Todd Bennett Whitaker

PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Melcenia Todd Bennett Whitaker, 71, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005.

Born June 5, 1934, at Pear, she was the daughter of the late Elsie Stover and Tolley Todd.

Melcenia lived in Eastlake before moving to Painesville Township in 1966. She worked for Avery Dennison in Painesville for 18 years before retiring in 1995.

She was a member of Living Waters Cathedral in Mentor, Ohio, and in her leisure time she enjoyed cooking and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Whitaker, and a son, Glenn Bennett.

Survivors include her sons, Stuart Bennett and his wife, Tracy, of Leroy and Randy Bennett and his wife, Vicki, of Painesville; a stepson, Gary Tucker of Painesville; a stepdaughter, Debbie Rust and her husband, Doug, of Painesville; her grandchildren, Christopher, Bryan, Jacob and Rosalyn; five stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Mitchell of Parkersburg; and a brother, Sylvin Todd of Mabscott.

Service will be 11 a.m. today at Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Ave., Painesville.

Visitation was 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Riverside cemetery, Painesville.

The family request that donations of sympathy be made to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 5786 Heisley Road, Mentor, OH 44060.

Elbert Ballard, 81, passed away Friday, Nov. 4, 2005.

Robert Biggs, 80, of Beckley, passed away Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, at the VA Medical Center, Beckley, following a long illness.

Jean Allen Chaffin

Jean Allen Chaffin, 72, of 334 Ewart Ave., Beckley, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.

Born July 4, 1933, at Crab Orchard, she was the daughter of the late Archie C. Allen and Esther Willis Allen.

Mrs. Chaffin was a retired employee of Montgomery Ward after more than 30 years of service, last working as a supervisor. She was a member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church. She lived most of her adult life in Beckley.

She was preceded in death by her twin brother, Glenn Allen, a brother, Joe Ray Allen, and a sister, Janice Johnson.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Ted E. Chaffin; a daughter, Kathryn Zankowitz and husband, Joe, of Beckley; a granddaughter, Amy Marie Zankowitz; a brother, Robert Allen of Belle; a sister, Marie Wills of Elon, N.C.; and her dog, “Sammy.”

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Crab Orchard Baptist Church with the Rev. Phil Shields officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Monday at the church.

Friends and men of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.

Harry R. Cooke Sr.

LYNN HAVEN, Fla. — Harry R. Cooke Sr., 92, of Lynn Haven, formerly of Naples, Fla., and Beckley, passed away Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, in Panama City, Fla. He was a resident of Community Health Nursing Home in Panama City for the past several months.

Born March 23, 1913, in Helen, he was one of two sons of the late Thomas Raymond Cooke and Stella Cooke of Beckley.

He attended Concord College in Athens and was a longtime resident of Beckley and member of United Methodist Temple. He worked with Westmoreland Coal Co. for more than 40 years, and included the positions of office manager and treasurer. He was a lifetime member of the Beckley Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Cooke’s wife of 70 years, the late Ina Ring Cooke, preceded him in death April 3, 2003. He is survived by his sons, Harry R. Cooke Jr. of Salisbury, N.C., and Tommie D. Cooke of Lynn Haven; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Melton Mortuary, Beckley. Interment service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley, with the Rev. Daniel Johnson officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren, Bruce Randolph Cooke, Caren Cooke Hendren, Thomas McWhorter Cooke, Ina Marie Cooke Hale, Daina Lynn Cooke-Weaver, David Lane Cooke, Merritt Anne Cooke Corso and Kay Carol Cooke Kelly.

The family requests that memorial gifts be made to Lynn Haven United Methodist Church, 108 E. Ninth St., Lynn Haven, FL 32444, or United Methodist Temple, 3871 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.

Daniel R. Crawford

FAYETTEVILLE — Daniel R. Crawford, 96, of Fayetteville, passed away Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, at The Summit in Oak Hill following a brief illness.

Born on Jan. 31, 1909, at Tornado, he was the son of the late Charles Crawford and Betty Allen Crawford.

Mr. Crawford was a member of Fayetteville Baptist Church and he was a retired track supervisor for Chessie/C&O Railroad. He was a member of the McDonald Warren Masonic Lodge No. 103 AF&AM, Mount Hope.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Thompson Crawford; his second wife, Minnie J. Blake Crawford; and his son, Daniel R. Crawford Jr.

Survivors include his son, Max H. Crawford of Hinton; three stepsons, Charles William Jones and his wife Eula Mae, of Southgate, Mich., David Jones and his wife, Carolyn, of Auburndale, Fla., and Thomas A. Jones and his wife, Lou, of Gauley Bridge; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Bill Withers officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. There will be Masonic graveside rites.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, is in charge of arrangements.
