Mrs. Mabeline Smith Fulton, 68, of Benton, Va., formerly of Eccles, died 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at a Benton, Va., nursing facility after a long illness.

Betty Lou Lykins

Betty Lou Lykins, 77, of Summersville, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, in Summersville Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Waters Funeral Chapel at Summersville with the Rev. Danny Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Baughman cemetery at Dille. Friends may call at the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Big Union Baptist Church.

James Howard Martin

James Howard Martin, 84, of Crab Orchard, W.Va., died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at Sunbridge Pine Lodge Extended Care Center in Beckley following a long illness.

Born Dec. 3, 1921, at Slab Fork, W.Va., he was the son of the late Jim T. and Pearlie Mae Branch Martin.

Mr. Martin was a former assistant bookkeeper and was a graduate of Trap Hill High School. He had received a business certificate from Bowling Green University.

He was a lifelong Raleigh County resident.

Surviving are his sisters, Thelma M. Browning and her husband, Charles Holroyd Browning, of Crab Orchard, W.Va., Audrey Payne of St. Clair Shores, Mich., and Gladys Cobb of Beckley, W.Va. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at the Rose and Quesenberry Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. John Lares officiating. Burial will follow at the Shumate cemetery at Maple Meadow.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to service.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

James M. Poindexter

James M. Poindexter, 77, of 408 Gregory St., Beckley, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital of an extended illness.

Charley F. ‘Jake’ Allen

Charley F. “Jake” Allen, age 89, of Raleigh, died Sunday, April 2, 2006, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.

Born at Grandview, on Nov. 15, 1916, he was the son of the late Charley Dennis Allen and Cora Bell Brogan Allen.

Mr. Allen was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA, and was a retired employee of Peabody Coal Company. He was a member of the West Raleigh Baptist Church, and had lived nearly all of his life at Raleigh.

He was preceded in death by brothers, John, Sidney, Claude, and Lee Allen; and sisters, Bertha Gill, Edith Vest, Juanita Boley, and Goldie Lee.

Surviving are his wife of 67 1/2 years, Elizabeth Reed Allen; three sons, Bob Allen and wife, Linda, of Prosperity, David Allen and wife, Sandy, of Beckley, and Darrell Allen and wife, Rosie, of Mint Hill, N.C.; a daughter, Nancy Reid and husband, Lake, of Gastonia, N.C.; a brother, E.E. “Rusty” Allen of Shady Spring; two sisters, Allaine Arbaugh of Raleigh, and Lorraine Lacek of Daniels; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the West Raleigh Baptist Church at Raleigh, with the Rev. Cleve Allen, the Rev. Rodney Allen, and the Rev. Ray Pack officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, and one hour prior to the services Tuesday at the church.

Cecil Roland Bryant

Cecil Roland Bryant, age 85, of 4-H Lake Road, Daniels, passed away Friday, March 31, 2006, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born at Kimbell, Va., on Sept. 14, 1920, he was the son of the late Lawrence McCorkle Bryant and Mae Etta Goodson Bryant.

Mr. Bryant was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having received an honorable discharge with the rank of Sergeant. He retired from the New River Coal Company with 42 years of service, and had worked for Stanaford Mines as a cable operator. Cecil was a very kind and gentle man. He enjoyed fishing at Little Beaver Lake and the New River. He loved working in his garden and keeping his lawn free of dandelions. He loved feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Cecil was a Christian, being of the Baptist faith. (John 3-16). For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Cecil was preceded in death by his much loved son-in-law, Ronald J. “Ronnie” Hopkins, in June 2005, also two brothers, Jack McCorkle Bryant and Lawrence Edward Bryant.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Annie Lee Sauchuck Bryant whom he dearly loved; a daughter, Frances Bryant Hopkins of Grandview; a son, Cecil Wayne Bryant and his wife, Nancy, of Yorktown, Va., and their children, Amanda Adams and husband, Jason, and son, William Cooper Adams of Japan, also Jason Bryant and wife, Deborah, of Mars, Pa.; a brother, William Bryant and wife, Mary Jane, of Iowa; a sister, Dorothy Angle and husband, Junior, of Newport News, Va.; brother and sisters-in-law, Frank and Bernece Sauchuck of Beckley, Margaret S. Jones and husband, Casey, of Daniels, and Jack Lawrence Bryant, his special nephew. Additional family members and special friends, Chad and Rachel Hopkins and daughter, Ella, of Grandview, Rebecca and Thomas Norman of Daniels, and Wes and Kellie Hopkins Williams of Pennsylvania, Bob and Marie Maynard of Daniels, Hubert Richards of Shady Spring, Pete and Benita Sauchuck of Beaver, and so many friends who kept Cecil in their thoughts and prayers.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with Pastor Jack Thomas of the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Casketbearers will be family and friends of Cecil’s.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church, 20/20 Vision Building Fund, P.O. Box 427, Daniels, WV 25832, or the Raleigh County Humane Society, P.O. Box 5128, Beckley, WV 25801.

PETERSTOWN — Ella Owen Buckland, 89, died Sunday, Apriil 2, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown. Friends may call 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peterstown Baptist Church.

Mary Starlene Burger died March 30, 2006, in Charlotte, N.C., following a short illness.

Billy Horrocks

WINONA — Billy Horrocks, 84, passed away at his residence Saturday, April 1, 2006, following a long illness.

Born Feb. 13, 1922, at Winona, he was the son of the late John William Horrocks and Jessie Tincher Horrocks.

Billy was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church of Lookout; he was a retired carpenter and a U.S. Navy Military Veteran of World War II.

Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Morene Mckay and Jacqueline; a half sister, Hilda; a brother, Jiggs; and a half brother, Howard.

Survivors include his wife, Dollie of Winona; a stepson, Bradley Duling and his wife, Martha, of Parkersburg; sisters, Alfreta Braithwaite of Harrisonburg, Va., Joan Redmon of Charleston and Nancy Fannin of South Carolina; brothers, Carnel Horrocks and wife, Evelyn, of Parma, Ohio, Durward Horrocks of Winona and Devan Horrocks of Palm Springs, Calif.; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was loved by all who knew him.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel in Ansted, with the Rev. Michael Loudermillk officiating. Burial will follow in the End of the Trail cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Hospice of Southern West Virginia for their professional care and love given to Billy.

Verona Beatrice Hylton

Verona Beatrice Hylton, age 90, of 354 Ransom Drive, Shady Spring, died Sunday, April 2, 2006, at her home following a long illness.

Born at Streeter, on Feb. 2, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Pack and Priscilla Cadle Pack.

Mrs. Hylton was a homemaker, and was of the Baptist faith. She had made her home at Shady Spring since 1987.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Benjamin Hylton; two sons, William H. Hylton, and James A. Hylton; brothers, Chester, Elijah, Jackson, and Samuel Pack; sisters, Estie Sisk, Mildred Lewis, Carmen Young, Myrtle Wyatt and Shirley Brier; and a granddaughter, Verona Sue Mentz.

Survivors include sons, Clarence Hylton and wife, Bethel, of Rock Falls, Ill., Benjamin Hylton and wife, Norma, of Beckley, Dennis Hylton and wife, Charlotte, of Oak Hill, and Ronnie Hylton and wife, Diane, of Huntersville, N.C.; daughters, Erma Clay and husband, Glen, of MacArthur, Judy Staton and husband, Jim, of MacArthur, and Lois Hylton of MacArthur; two brothers, Lyonel Pack of Sidney, Australia, and Jimmy Vance Pack and wife, Rita, of Rock Falls, Ill.; a sister, Nellie Barnabi and husband, Bob, of Prosperity; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with Pastor Ken Overdorf and the Rev. Grayson C. Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home in Shady Spring.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

John Robert ‘Bobby’ Kinder

LAYLAND — John Robert “Bobby” Kinder, 70, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 30, 2006, following a sudden illness.

Born July 23, 1935, at Layland, he was the son of the late Robert and Ollie Gulley Kin-der.

Mr. Kinder was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was retired from G.M.C. with 30 years of service in Balto, Md. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold, Earl, Ban and Otis “Bud” Kinder; and three sisters, Olive Withrow, Bessie Davis and Ethel Marie Whitaker; and a nephew, Freddie Kinder.

Survivors include a companion of more than 20 years, Betty L. Wriston of Layland; a brother, James Kinder of Glen Burnie, Md.; a nephew, Steven Davis of Nevada, and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Chestnut Knob Baptist Church in Layland with the Pastor Floyd Bolen officiating. Burial will follow in the Layland cemetery, Layland.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Lonnie Gunnoe, Howard Pettinaro, John Kinder, Rick Kinder, Bobby Gene Ayers II, and Billy Harrah.

Glee H. Quillen

ALDERSON — Glee H. Quillen, 94, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2006, at the Brier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Ronceverte.

Born Oct. 21, 1911, at Smoot, she was the daughter of the late L.O. and Charlotte Pearl Amick Haynes.

Mrs. Quillen was a member of Johnson Memorial Methodist Church in Alderson, where she was a former Sunday School teacher; she was also a former secretary of Quillen Lumber and Supply Company in Alderson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Russell Quillen; sisters, Dama Virginia Bryant, Dainty Dell Martin, Phala Olive Puckett and Zella Pearl Wells; and brothers, Heber Haynes, Maynard Haynes, and Dauphie Bernice Haynes.

Survivors include three sons, Darrell G. Quillen of Asbury, Ronald L. Quillen of Alderson, and Dennis R. Quillen of Oveida, Fla.; a half brother, L.O. Haynes Jr. of Huntington Beach, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 6, 2006, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Sammy Groves officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home in Lewisburg.

Family will serve as pallbearers.
