Edith Okes Benson

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Edith Okes Benson, 92, formerly of Blue Jay, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006, in Columbia.

Born June 7, 1913, at Blue Jay, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Wilson and Leora Blankenship Okes.

She received a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College and her master’s degree from Marshall University. She also received special nursing training from Vanderbilt University. She retired as a school teacher after teaching many years in West Virginia, Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David M. Benson; brothers, Grant, Roy and Howard Okes; and her sister, Kathryn Moore.

Edith had been a resident of Columbia for the past 43 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Paula Gail Benson of Columbia; two sisters, Mary Helen Okes of Beaver and Emogene O. Turner and her husband, John, of Jacksonville, Ala.; a niece and four nephews.

Service and entombment will be 11 a.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum B, Beckley, with the Rev. Wanda Childs officiating.

Friends may call one hour before service Monday at the mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Ina Geraldine Brooks

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. — Ina Geraldine Brooks, 70, formerly of Lewisburg, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2006, at her home in Fredricksburg.

Born Jan. 30, 1936, in Lewisburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Audrey Yates Hughes.

Mrs. Brooks was a graduate of Lewisburg High School in 1954, a supervisor for Holiday Inn and a member of Bethel Chapel in Vago.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Hughes and wife, Helen, of Spotsylvania, Va., David Brooks and wife, Sandy, of Spotsylvania, Douglas Brooks of Clayton, N.C., and Richard Brooks of Melbourne, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Hendricks of Charleston; grandchildren, Robert Hughes Jr., Christine Collins, Tawnya Collins, Micheal Cleveland, Marie Cleveland, Dana Brooks, Jenny Brooks, Danny Hanson, Jamie Hanson and Miranda Brooks; four great-grandchildren, Alisha, Chelsea, Brandon and Keira; and nieces and nephews, Kathy Wiseman, Kenny Hendricks, Karen Hendricks and Keith Hendricks.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Lula Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Lewis Chapel cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Noxal W. Cline

GILBERT — Noxal W. Cline, 75, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 27, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. Sunday at Little Cub Memorial Baptist Church, North Spring. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Mounts Funeral Home, with special service at 7 p.m.

Opal Mae Dalton

ANDERSON, S.C. — Opal Mae Dalton, 99, wife of the late Isaac Ford Dalton, died Friday, April 28, 2006, at NHC of Anderson.

Born in Maple Meadow on Feb. 27, 1907, Mrs. Dalton was the daughter of the late Richard F. Largen and Nancy Joanne Bolt Largen.

Opal was a homemaker and at the age of 72 moved to Anderson. She became a member of North Anderson Baptist Church where she attended the Ruth Sunday School Class and was a member of the DMAs.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She is survived by two sons, Bernard Dalton of Anderson and Maynard Dalton of Cleveland, Ohio; a daughter, Phyllis Clowers of Anderson; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson, with the Rev. Bill Rigsby and Jerry Parnell officiating.

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Phyllis Clowers, 630 Jackson Road, Anderson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Anderson Interfaith Ministries, 1202 S. Murray Ave., P.O. Box 1136, Anderson, SC 29624, or Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 285, Anderson, SC 29622.

William ‘Bill’ Everett

OAK HILL — William “Bill” Everett, 79, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill following an extended illness.

Born Aug. 26, 1926, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of the late Linwood R. Ever-ett and Elora Mae Twiddy Everett Merkley and stepson of the late Arlin A. Merkley.

He attended Apostolic Holiness Church of Oak Hill.

Bill left Union Pacific Railroad Co. to enlist in the U.S. Navy in 1943. After the war he served as a police officer for eight years in Norfolk, Va. He retired in 1986 from Martha Washington Hospital, Chicago, Ill.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Patsy A. Toney Everett; his ex-wife, Ethel J. Alrey of Virginia; four sons who enjoyed their many fishing trips to North Carolina with their Dad, Berry L. Everett of Soda Springs, Idaho, William Rodney Everett Ulrey and wife, Paulette, of Chicago, William Steven Everett and Marilyn Koch of Ohio, and Derek S. Everett at home; two daughters, Debra Jane Lowery of Staunton, Va., and Sherrie Mae Jennings and husband, Gary, of Oak Hill; two brothers, Linwood R. Everett Jr. of North Carolina and Richard A. Merkley of Florida; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Special mention for Billy Griggs and wife, Tuck, of Mount Hope, Jackie Deal and wife, Pat, of Oak Hill and ex-son-in-law, John Buchcannon of Stuarts Draft, Va.

Bill was loved by all who knew him.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Tyree Funeral Funeral, Oak Hill.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Carlos Lewis officiating. Burial will be at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill. Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill.

Tamara Lynn Jackson

BALTIMORE — Tamara Lynn Jackson, 38, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Hinton, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at Gilcrest Hospice Center in Towson, Md.

Born Sept. 18, 1967, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Williams Jackson.

Tamara was a former employee of Potomac Hotel in Baltimore and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Paula and Verda Kay Jackson.

Survivors include a daughter, Katana Mullen of Hinton; two brothers, Henry Jackson Jr. and Douglas Jackson, both of Hinton; three sisters, Donna Meadows and husband, David, and Kathy Jackson, both of Hinton, and Debra Craigen of Baltimore; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. John Burnett officiating. Burial will follow in Esquire cemetery near Hinton.

Friends may call noon until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.

Johnnie Emanuel Johnson

Johnnie Emanuel Johnson, 82, of 203 Marion St., Beckley, was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, after a long illness.

Born Nov. 19, 1923, in Bessemer, Ala., he was a son of the late John Sherril and Fanny Sherril.

Mr. Johnson was retired from Acme Construction. He worked for 20 years as a coal miner. He was a faithful member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, and member and past president of New Era Music Convention.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Pete Johnson, and a sister, Eva Mae Johnson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Betty Graham Johnson; children, Brenda of Silver Spring, Md., Garland and wife, Brenda, of Charleston, Johnny and wife, June, of Englewood, Colo., Bruce and wife, Andi, of Michellville, Md., Darrell and wife, Mary, of Richmond, Va., Rodney and wife, Mae, of Beckley and Priscilla and husband, William, of St. Albans; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Lanark, with the Rev. Donald Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Monday at the church.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Major Earnest Johnson

FAYETTEVILLE — Major Earnest Johnson, 83, died Friday, April 28, 2006, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

Born May 21, 1922, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Major Gwinn and Maude Estelle Stinnett Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was the retired owner of Johnson Construction Co.

He was a member of VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Hackney Johnson; a son, E. Pete Johnson and wife, Teresa, of Fayetteville; a brother, Bernard Johnson of Oak Hill; a sister, Catherine Ingles of Oak Hill; two grandchildren, Laura Blake and husband, Bill, of Culloden and Michael Johnson and wife, Mollie, of Fayetteville; and three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Maddie and Jillie.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Revs. Alvie Edwards and Bill Withers officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites by VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Margie M. Mann

RONCEVERTE — Margie M. Mann, 83, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Mann was born July 1, 1922, at Spring Creek and was the daughter of the late Walter and Eva Boone Morgan.

Margie was a member of Mountain View Primitive Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Margie devoted her life to her family and to her God. She was a wonderful and caring wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and more. She was a loyal friend and role model to many because of the way she lived her life. Her strong faith in God sustained her during severe illnesses as it did after the death in 1986 of her beloved Allen, from whom she was inseparable during 48 years of marriage. She will be sorely missed, but special and loving memories will be her legacy to the many whose lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen L. Mann; a grandson, Joseph Christoper Mann; and a sister, Margaret May.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty M. Burke of Hillsboro; a son, Joe Allen Mann and wife, Carol, of Williamsburg, Va.; two sisters, Salina Feamster of Ronceverte and Patsy Reaser and husband, Lee, of Lewisburg; a brother, Fred G. Morgan and wife, Frances, of Ronceverte; three sisters-in-law, Jenny Morgan of Ronceverte, Lucille Holliday of Glasgow and Viola Canterbury of Ronceverte; grandchildren, Beth Zambella and husband, Tony, of Williamsburg, Va., Cindi Sanders and husband, Scott, of Williamsburg, Va., Jamie Burke of Lewisburg, Leigh Mann of Greensboro, N.C., and Susan Woloszyn and husband, Nick, of Williamsburg, Va.; and great-granddaughter, Alexandra Woloszyn of Williamsburg, Va.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Arnold Morgan and Elder Jimmy Booth officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Lewisburg.
