Paul Gray Vance

PICKAWAY — Paul Gray Vance, 92, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea.

He was born March 2, 1914, at Kingston, the son of the late James E. and Della Vance Reed.

Throughout his life he demonstrated great concern and empathy for others. He was a member of New Lebanon Associated Reform Presbyterian Church, Odd Fellows Lodge No. 146 in Ronceverte and the West Virginia Retired Teachers Association. He was a retired mechanic for the Monroe County Board of Education and enjoyed reading and sports of all types. He had a great zest for life and will greatly be missed by his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Etta Bostic Vance, on March 11, 1971; a son, Marvin Lee Vance; two sisters, Edith Vance and Ruth Lynch; and a brother, Carl Vance.

He is survived by a son, Paul Roger Vance and wife, Barbara, of Winchester, Va.; two daughters, Joyce Pritt of Pickaway and Betty Craft of Wytheville, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Vance of Buford, Ga.; a brother, James E. Vance of Buford; eight grandchildren, Wanda Vance of Buford, Wayne Vance of Atlanta, Ga., Todd Vance of Leesburg, Va., Douglas Vance of Ashburn, Va., Bruce Vance of Lexington, Va., Brian Vance of Ohio, Terry Pritt of Baltimore, Md., and Kevin Craft of Roanoke, Va.; and three great-granddaughters, Kailee, Emily and Samantha.

Service will be 11 a.m. today at New Lebanon ARP Church with the Rev. David Warf officiating. Burial will follow in New Lebanon cemetery, Pickaway.

Family received friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home, Union.

Mr. Vance requested that any expression of sympathy be made to the Union Rescue Squad.

Kenneth C. Wills

HINTON — Kenneth C. “Hank” Wills, 70, of Elk Knob Road, Hinton, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at the VA Medical Center in Beckley following a long illness.

Born April 25, 1936, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Hubert and Rosalie Hill Wills.

Kenneth was a former member of the Hinton Police Department and served as chief of police for several years. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in the 101st Airborne Division. Kenneth had lived most of his life in Summers County and was a Protestant.

He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew Shannon Wills; three brothers, Hobert F. Wills, Luther G. Wills, and Willie “Bill” Wills; a sister, Odessa Lee Gill; a brother-in-law, Charlie Ray Buckland; and a sister-in-law, Geraldine Wills.

Survivors include his loving wife, Juanita Carol Buckland Wills; a daughter, Sandra Lemon and husband, James, of Hinton; two sons, Dennis Wills and wife, Lisa, and Kenneth Wills Jr., all of Hinton; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Jeremy Lemon, and Brian, Shanna and Brandon Wills; four brothers, Earl Wills and wife, Decrecia, of Warrington Va., Raymond Wills of Columbus, Ohio, and Donald Wills and wife, Drema, and Bobby Wills and wife, Juanita, all of Reedsville, N.C.; father-in-law, Charlie T. Buckland of Hinton; and three sisters-in-law, Melba Jean Buckland and Ruby Wills, both of Hinton, and Letha Wills of Virginia.

Service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 1, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor George Cook and Minister Fred Dinkler officiating. Burial will follow in Upland cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Ricky, Doug and Jeff Wills, Paul and Stephen Brown, and Joey Smith

Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Richmond, Meredith Bennett and Jim Gill.

Vernon D. Wilson

Vernon D. Wilson, 85, of Beckley, formerly of Whitby, died Friday, April 28, 2006, at the Beckley VA Medical Center after a long illness.

Born March 11, 1921, at Spanishburg, he was the son of the late Kelly E. Wilson and Myrtle Baldwin Wilson.

Mr. Wilson was a retired coal miner and lived in Whitby most of his adult life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Ar-my in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fran-ces Wilson; a son, Phillip D. Wilson; brothers, David L. Wilson, Kelly E. Wilson Jr. and Loren D. Wilson; and sisters, Edith Wilson, Lydia Price, Texie Barker, Ethel Mitchell, Juanita Perry and Marilyn Meadows.

Survivors include daughters, Brenda McKinney and husband, James, of Beckley and Verna Heredia and fiancé, Mark Andrews, of Beckley, with whom he made his home; sons, David Wilson of Beckley, and Vernon Medlen of Chattanooga, Tenn.; sister, Ramona Helmondollar of Beckley; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. David Meadows officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The family will serve as pallbearers.

Lena P. Withrow

HINES — Lena P. Withrow, 81, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea.

Born Nov. 10, 1924, in Greenbrier County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Edward and Josie Osborne Phillips.

Lena was an Avon representative and a homemaker.

She was a member of Hines Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Edward and Luke Pishner; five sisters; and a brother.

Survivors include her husband, David Withrow; a stepdaughter, Debbie Persinger of Covington, Va.; a son, Vincent Pishner Jr. of Kingsport, Tenn.; two stepsons, David Lee Withrow of Cleveland, Ohio, and Robert Eugene Withrow of Tallahassee, Fla.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two special nieces, Claudette Hayes and Reba Perkins, both of Florida; and several other nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Pastor Gary Eisenman officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bernie Edward ‘Ed’ Worley

Bernie Edward “Ed” Worley, 81, of Maxwell Hill, Beckley, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at his residence surrounded by his loving, caring family after a short battle with cancer.

Ed was born Dec. 9, 1924, at Mabscott, the son of the late Lacy and Mittie Jenkins Worley. He had lived at his home on Maxwell Hill for 56 years.

Mr. Worley was a retired electrician from Westmoreland Coal Co. He retired in 1979. He was a member of Maxwell Hill Baptist Church and the Silver Saints Sunday School Class. He served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II, was a life member of the VFW, the American Legion and UMWA Local 5770.

Ed loved camping, hunting, fishing and traveling with Elsie and his family. He was always a WVU and WWHS football fan. He enjoyed every moment he spent with his grandchildren and family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin sons, Eddie and Freddie Worley; and three brothers, Jack Walker, Bill Worley and Ray Worley.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 58 years, Elsie J. Reed Worley; his four children, Connie Worley Pannell and husband, Don, Bernie E. Worley Jr. and wife, Jodi, of Beckley, Debbie Worley Boso and husband, Greg, of Summersville and Randy Worley and wife, Misty, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Pa’s five grandchildren, Bridget Pannell Acord and husband, Jerry, of Beckley, Brian Pannell and Renee of Boulder, Colo., Lee Boso of Cowen and fiancee Carmen Lowe of Beckley, Bernie E. Worley III of Morgantown and Karen Sue Boso of Clarksburg; his great-granddaughter, “Pa’s Sunshine” Kayleigh Sue Acord of Beckley; his brothers, Jack Worley and wife, Dannie, of Charleston, S.C., and Lacy Worley and wife, Judy, of Delaware, Ohio; and his sisters, Evelyn Worley, Mary Worley Reed and husband, Jack, and Mae Worley, of Glouster, Ohio, Ruth Worley Kitchen and husband, James, of Columbus, Ohio, and Margaret Worley Spadafore of West Lake, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Goldie Worley of Shady Spring and Cecile Worley of Detroit, Mich.; the Reed family that loved Ed as their brother, Tom and Janelda Reed of Chico, Calif., Lois and John Green, Drema and Bill Vaught of Mount Airy, N.C., Christy and Steve Dean, John and Susan Reed, David and Susie Reed, all of Beckley, and Jeanette and Carlos Lilly of Beaverly, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Maxwell Hill Baptist Church, 301 Teel Road, Maxwell Hill, with the Rev. Kenneth Killen officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Family and friends may visit 6 to 8 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, and one hour before service Sunday at the church.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Brian Pannell, Lee Boso, Bernie Worley III and Jerry Acord, son-in-law Greg Boso and nephew Billy Worley. Honorary pallbearer will be son-in-law Don Pannell.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Hospice for their caring and support, especially Tammy, Theresa, Virginia and Kimmie.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Edith Okes Benson, 92, formerly of Blue Jay, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006, in Columbia.

PETERSTOWN — Dale E. Brown, 75, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Peterstown United Methodist Church. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, and one hour before service Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Peterstown United Methodist Church.

Donna Faye Hyden Crews

OAK HILL — Donna Faye Hyden Crews, 58, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2006.

She was the daughter of the late Henry Lee Stover and Cuba Wriston Stover.

Donna loved working with crafts, drawing and painting. She was a nurse’s aide at the VA Medical Center in Beckley. Donna was a deaconess with In His Image Ministries.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sandra Kessler; first husband, Robert “R.L.” Hyden; and two brothers.

Those left to cherish her memory include husband, Freddie Crews; granddaughter, Samantha Crews of Oak Hill; brother, Stanley Stover and wife, Rita, of Gary, Ind.; brother, Raymond Stover and wife, Leigh, of Beckley; brother, Rocky Stover and wife, Tina, of Oak Hill; brother, Gary Stover and wife, Toni, of Woodbridge, N.J.; sister, Dora Brooks and husband, Randall, of Mount Hope; several nieces and nephews; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at In His Image Ministries, Wolf Creek, with Pastor Vernon R. Chittum officiating.

Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.

Family will be receiving flowers; however, donations can be made to In His Image Ministries, P.O. Box 192, Hilltop, WV 25855.

William ‘Bill’ Gray

RAINELLE — William “Bill” Gray, 57, passed away early Wednesday morning, April 26, 2006, at his home following a long illness.

Born April 5, 1949, at Mount Hope, he was a son of Ruth Currier Gray of Jacksonville, Fla., and the late Robert Gray.

He was a member of Rainelle United Methodist Church, a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the 811th Ordnance Reserve Unit of Rainelle.

Bill was a carpenter and a truck driver.

Those left to mourn are his wife, Brenda Willis Gray; his mother, Ruth C. Gray of Jacksonville; daughter, Lori Gray White and husband, Robert, of Rainelle; three sons, Mark Gray and wife, Linda, of Rainelle, Shawn Gray of Rainelle and Steven Gray of Rainelle, and Justin Crookshanks, who was like a son to him, and wife, Mindy; a brother, Donald Gray and wife, Sherry, of Jacksonville; and six grandchildren, Eli and Emme White, Jennifer, Brian, Katlyn and Ethan Gray, all of Rainelle.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Houston Boothe officiating.

The body is to be cremated.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family has requested that donations of sympathy be made to Greenbrier Valley Hospice, 540 N. Jefferson St., Box 7, Suite D, Lewisburg, WV 24901.
