DEMPSEY — Oather I. Smith, 84, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2006.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday, June 26, at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville.

Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Leroy Smithson

SINGER ISLAND, Fla. — Thomas Leroy Smithson, 61, formerly of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2006, after a battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Spicer Smithson and Gladys Smithson Fern; and stepfather, Luther Fern.

He was a born-again Christian and construction worker.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Bonnie Pike Smithson; two sons, Thomas Jr. of Mount Hope and Shawn of Missouri; a daughter, Dawn Worden and husband, Randy, of New York; four grandchildren, Dustin and John Thomas Smithson, and Joseph and Megan Worden; four stepchildren, Wendy Aube of New York, Tammy Pike of Morristown, N.Y., Amy Trimboli of Madrid, N.Y., and Robert Pike of Ogdensburg, N.Y.; six stepgrandchildren, Steven, Robert, Michael Aube, Kristian, Ashli Pike and Tyler; a sister, Kitty (Eddie) Fowler of Bluefield; a brother, the Rev. Randy (Gloria) Smithson of Shady Spring; nieces and nephews, Paul and Ashleigh of Shady Spring, Jamie and Jim Ed Fowler of Bluefield, Jodie and Mike Burton of Bluefield; great-nieces and nephews, Mason and Victoria Burton, and Jennifer, Jessica and Joshua Fowler; an aunt, Frances Stover of Crab Orchard.

The Rev. Randy Smithson will conduct memorial service Aug. 5 at Sun Bridge Pine Lodge nursing home, Beckley.

PRINCETON — James McCoy Spangler, 81, died Friday, June 23, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Burns Wornal Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton. Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home or leave online condolences at www.memorialfd.com.

Rev. Steven Allen Thomas

DUNCANVILLE, Ala. — The Rev. Steven Allen Thomas, 56, formerly of West Virginia, passed away Friday, June 23, 2006, in Birmingham, Ala., following a long illness.

Born Dec. 28, 1949, in West Virginia, he was the son of Coleman and Betty Losch Thomas.

He had pastored for over 30 years in West Virginia and Alabama. He was a graduate of Samford University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

He was a former assistant mine superintendent for Pittston Sewell Mines and was currently the pastor at Liberty Baptist Church in Duncanville.

Rev. Thomas was preceded in death by his father, Coleman Thomas, and two brothers, Sidney and Nathan Michael Thomas.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Thomas; his mother, Betty Thomas of Hominy Falls; a daughter, Amy Gober and husband, Bryan, of Warrior, Ala.; two sons, John and wife, Kimberly, of Woodstock, Ala., and Christopher and wife, Christina, of Charleston; a sister, Kay Thomas of Waterloo, S.C.; a brother, Stanley Thomas of Hominy Falls; and nine grandchildren, Shayne, Jacob, Abbey, Anthony, Brandon, Cameron, Danielle, Kayla and Haley.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Olive Branch Baptist Church, Nettie, with the Rev. John Thomas, the Rev. Christopher Thomas and the Rev. George Sherman officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery, Nettie.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Shannon, Matthew and Nathan Thomas, D.J. O’Dell, Derrick Scruggs and Clinton McGraw.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that you please make donations of sympathy to your place of worship or the American Cancer Society.

Charles Emmett Bennett

UNION — Charles Emmett Bennett, 75, of Union, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2006.

Graveside rites with military honors will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at McLean Presbyterian Church cemetery. As per his wishes, there will be no visitation.

Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte is in charge of the arrangements.

Elizabeth Ann Farley

Elizabeth Ann Jones Farley, 57, of Coal City, died Friday, June 23, 2006, of injuries resulting from an automobile accident on Rt. 19 in Oak Hill.

Born January 13, 1949 at Welch, she was the daughter of the late George R. and Dorothy Burks Jones.

Elizabeth was a 1967 graduate of Welch High School and a 1971 graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing. For the next 33 years she worked at the V.A. Medical Center in Beckley and when she retired she was the Director of the Emergency Room. After retirement, she worked for Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital in their ER. She was a member of the WV Nurse Association and she was a C.P.R. instructor at the VA.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Edwin D. “Ted” Farley, on December 7, 2003; and by two sisters, Rhonda G. Lucion and Sybil Jean Corey.

Survivors include her son, John Farley, and fiancée Misty Prince of Coal City; two daughters, Rebecca Clyburn of Coal City and Anna Ellis and husband Lance of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren, Jazyn, Cedric and Jayd Cross, Lance and Sydney Ellis, Jaqlyn Farley and Brandon Clyburn; three brothers, Franklin R. Jones and wife Brenda of Richlands, Va., Lawrence C. Jones and wife Janice of Dayton, Ohio, and Randy D. Jones and wife Deborah of Bluefield; and by two sisters, Dorothy M. Scarbro and husband Terry of Masseyville and Sherry Vass and husband Don of Richlands.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2006 in the Melton Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Douglas Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Cole Family cemetery, Coal City.

Friends may call this evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

James E. Fox

POCATALICO — James E. Fox, 75, of Pocatalico, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, in Charleston, after a short illness.

Born November 11, 1930 at Pence Springs, he was the son of the late O. Emmett Fox and Hallie M. Reed Fox McKinney.

Mr. Fox was a retired truck driver and construction worker.

He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Gladys B. Fox.

He is the beloved brother of Douglas H. Fox of Hinton; beloved uncle of one nephew, Larry D. Fox and wife Kathy of Hinton; one niece, Susie Adkins and husband Farrell of Burlington, N.C.; two great-nephews, Dr. F. Christopher Adkins of Morgantown and Nicholas Adkins and wife Dr. Jennifer Adkins of Martin’s Ferry, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel in Hinton, with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in the Elk Knob cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral parlors from 6 until 9 p.m. today.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Arrangements are by the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors of Hinton.

Clarice Hill

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Clarice Hill of Lexington, Ky., formerly of Pineville, cherished mother of Sandy Haymaker and Shirley Cruise, departed this life on Friday, June 23, 2006, at Mayfair Manor Nursing Home.

Clarice was born May 13, 1922 in Pineville, the daughter of the late Walter and Edith Stewart.

She was a retired postal worker and a member of the Rockcastle Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buren Hill; a sister, Lena; and a special grandson, Matthew Haymaker.

She is survived by daughters, Sandy Haymaker and her husband Tim of Lexington, Ky., and Shirley Cruise and her husband Theron of Abingdon, Va.; a brother, Carl Stewart and his wife Catherine of Rockview; her grandchildren, Andy Haymaker and Theron and Shad Cruise; great-grandchildren, Sean, Jack, Kiley, and Caylee; and a special cousin, Lucille Cook.

Loved by all, Clarice never met a stranger. She was blessed with a loving heart, a great sense of humor, and accepted everyone with open arms. Upon moving to Lexington in 2001 into Mayfair Village Retirement Center, she quickly became a part of the Mayfair family and spent many enjoyable days with her new friends. They became the extended family of Clarice and Sandy, who felt it was a special blessing to become a part of their wonderful facility. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Mayfair Manor and Dr. Patricia Thompson and the staff of the Veterans Park Medical Clinic for their loving care and attention through her illness.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Doc Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Cook Family cemetery, Keyrock.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home on Tuesday. A visitation was held at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Lexington, Ky., on Sunday.

Memorials may be made in Mrs. Hill’s name to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.

Calfee Funeral Service of Pineville is serving the Hill family.

Margaret C. Phipps

A memorial service and celebration of the life of Margaret C. Phipps, 98, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to services on Wednesday.

Miss Phipps was born at Slab Fork on March 29, 1908, the daughter of the late Henry Elbert and Lessie Harper Phipps.

A resident of the Greystone Inn at Beaver, Margaret died on June 11. She taught primary grades at Institute, and was a longtime resident of Beckley. Margaret was dedicated to her teaching, her pupils, her church, and her family. She was the first member of her family to graduate from college pursuing her degree from Marshall College, by studying summers in Huntington, Universities of Colorado, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Virginia showing a great love of travel and study. Postgraduate studies were at Boston University and she applied for and was appointed by the governor of WV as the first person from Raleigh County to receive a 1955-1956 Fullbright Teacher Exchange at Canterbury, England. Following her UK teaching, she traveled widely in Europe. During World War II, Margaret volunteered summers to help in the war effort at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., as a typist.

Margaret was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Beckley, was an active member and past President of the Beckley Rhododendron Garden Club. She was also active in the Beckley Women’s Club, the Monday Music Club, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an accomplished pianist and cellist, and was an enthusiastic gardener. She had an abiding love in family history, genealogy, telling funny stories about her pupil’s antics, and collecting cartoons.

Survivors include two nephews, William H. and Robert M. Gerhold; a niece, Margaret Elizabeth Wolf; as well as eight grandnieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in memory of Margaret C. Phipps to Hospice of Southern WV, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

Geneva Cadle Thompson

Geneva Cadle Thompson, 90, of Coal City, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2006.

Born November 16, 1914 at Ballard, she was the daughter of the late John Amos Thompson and the late Viva Maine Holdren Thompson.

Geneva loved quilting, birds, and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was of the Baptist faith, and attended the Mabscott Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Cadle, and brothers, Abrey and John Thompson.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Mary Venable; nephew, Randy Venable and wife, Donna, who took care of her; nephews, Richard Venable, Randy Venable and wife, Allison; niece, Angela Priddy and husband, Frank; honorary grandchildren, Zack, Alexis, and Karlie Priddy, Myles and Ethan Venable, Emma and Lindsey Adams and Zack Griffith; special friends, Jennifer Adams, Anna Adams, Ann Griffith and Shirley Dinsmore.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. today, June 26, 2006 at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 147 Virginia St., Sophia, with Pastor Harmon Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service today at the funeral home.

A special thank you to the nurses and staff at Raleigh Center.

Murna Bailey Toler, 56, a resident of Logan Center, formerly of Cyclone, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 24, 2006.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at the Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home Chapel at Man. Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
