Bonnie Sue Moore

FAIRLEA — Bonnie Sue Moore, 47, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Thomas Earl Phillips

Thomas Earl Phillips, who was born in Spring Hill on April 18, 1929, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Howard and Jessie Oliver Phillips; a brother, Howard Lee Phillips; and an infant son, Timothy Earl Phillips.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 50 years, Peggy McDaniel Phillips; his sons, James Howard Phillips and wife, Lisa, of Roanoke, Va., and Gregory Ray Phillips and wife, Jacquie, of Jacksonville, Fla.; his three dearly loved grandchildren, Timothy, Megan and Chase; his sister, Betty Phillips Lilly, and her children, Joellen “Jodi” Lawson Worley, Phillip Lawson and Jennifer Lawson Pennington, all of Beckley; a sister-in-law, Penny Pack Phillips of Morgantown; several loved nieces and nephews; and many dear friends and neighbors.

Tom was a 1947 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, U.S. Army veteran, a graduate of Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston) and retired from Southern States after 34 years. He was a longtime member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where he truly enjoyed the Chancellor Choir.

The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today at Oakey South Chapel, Roanoke.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Co-pastors Bob and Dusty Fielder will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, Tom’s wishes were that donations be made to any of the following: Presbyterian Community Center, 1228 Jamison Ave., S.E., Roanoke, VA 24018; Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 1831 Deyerle Road, Roanoke, VA 24018; or the Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 11525, Roanoke, VA 24022.

Samuel Harold Burger

CONOVER, N.C. — Samuel Harold Burger, 82, died Thursday, May 11, 2006, at his residence.

Born April 9, 1924, in Covington, Va., he was the son of the late Samuel H. and Helen Hannah Burger.

Mr. Burger was a graduate of West Virginia University. He was a retired supervisor from Union Carbide in Charleston, having worked there for 30 years. He also was a consultant engineer for the City of Vienna and Parkersburg, as well as a consultant engineer for Kelly, Gidley, Blair and Wolfe.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Coast Guard.

Mr. Burger was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Hickory, N.C. He was a member of the Jake Golden Bible Class. He also held membership at Wayside United Methodist Church in Vienna for 50 years, serving as trustee and member of the administrative board.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margarie Erwin Burger; a daughter, Beverly Burger; a brother; and six sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Harilyn Bell Burger; two daughters, Rebecca Rich and Melisse Wiseman, both of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Helen Bailey of Stuart, Va.; two stepsons, Dennis Bell of Hickory and Harry Bell of Charlotte, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Cathy Bell of Vienna; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, May 15, at McCraw Funeral Home, Lewisburg, followed by graveside service at McClean cemetery, Ronceverte, with the Rev. Dr. Joseph S. Kenaston officiating.

Memorials may be given to the Wayside United Methodist Church Building Fund, Vienna.

Two memorial services will be held at a later date, one at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Hickory, and the other at Wayside United Methodist Church, Vienna.

Ethel Shumate Evans

WINNIE, Texas — Ethel Shumate Evans, formerly of Mullens, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, in a Winnie care center following a long illness. She was 98 years of age.

Veldon ‘V.J.’ Fleming

BRADENTON, Fla. — Veldon “V.J.” Jene Fleming, 89, formerly of Lindside, died Monday, May 1, 2006.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 14, at Adwell cemetery, Ronceverte. There will be no visitation.

Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, is serving the family.

Mary Gina Dawn Holmes-Grant

FORT HOOD, Texas — Mary Gina Dawn Holmes-Grant, 42, formerly of Oceana, died Thursday, May 11, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 15, at the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The family is being served by Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco.

William M. Holbert

DIBERVILLE, Miss. — William Michael Holbert, 50, formerly of Richwood, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood. Friends may call one hour before service Sunday at the funeral home.

Kenneth Benton Kees

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Kenneth Benton Kees, 71, formerly of Burnwell, died Thursday, May 11, 2006, at his home.

Born May 22, 1934, at Burnwell, he was the son of the late Kenneth Wayne and Mary Elizabeth Lucas Kees.

He was retired from the automotive industry.

Mr. Kees was a devoted member and active deacon of Heritage Free Will Baptist Church in Taylor. He was a longtime member of Masonic Lodge No. 586 AF and AM of Livonia, Mich.

Survivors include his loving wife, Reba J. Camp Kees; daughter, Deborah Parsons and husband, Scott, of Livonia; sons, Kenneth W. Kees and wife, Kathryn, of Dearborn Heights, Mich., and Keith Kees and fiancée, Sherry Huff, of Romulus, Mich.; a brother, Robert A. “Bob” Kees and wife, Ann, of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Matthew and wife, Angie, and Kimberly; great-grandchildren, Adian and Sydney; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle with the Rev. Tommy Mounts and the Rev. Robert Isaac officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth Kees, Keith Kees, Scott Parsons, Robert Kees, Michael Kees, Jim Kees and Troy Thompson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Virginia E. McCallister

Virginia “Genny” Elizabeth McCallister of Carriage Drive, Beckley, formerly of Fayette County, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2006, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Born Feb. 23, 1918, at Maplewood, Genny was the daughter of the late John Lewis and Sarah Elizabeth Bennett Taylor.

Genny spent her childhood in Maplewood and Layland. She had lived in Lookout and Ansted and had been a resident of Beckley the past 10 years. She was a Methodist and a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Quentin McCallister.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was greatly loved in life and will be missed by her daughters, Dorothy L. McCallister of Beckley and Carol McCallister Skaggs and her husband, Paul, of Pinellas Park, Fla.; her grandchildren, Mark A. Skaggs and his wife, Judy, of Palmento, Fla., Tamara D. Waterson and her fiancé, Alvin Salvator, of Zephyrhills, Fla., Paul T. Skaggs and his wife, Angela, of Orange Park, Fla., and Misty D. Skaggs and her fiancé, Derek Morrill, of Pinellas Park; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 3 p.m. today at Chapel of Rest Mausoleum of Restlawn Memory Gardens, Ansted, with the Rev. Douglas Eades officiating. Burial will follow in the gardens.

Friends may call one hour before service today at the mausoleum.

Bobby Joe McCoy

Bobby Joe McCoy, 54, of MacArthur, died Sunday, May 7, 2006, at his home.

Born Oct. 21, 1951, at Mullens, he was the son of Lula Roberts McCoy of Crab Orchard and the late Perry McCoy.

Mr. McCoy was a disabled construction worker and a Vietnam U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Besides his mother, survivors include his sons, Bobby Joe McCoy Jr. of Fullerton, Calif., and Shawn McCoy of Orange, Calif.; a daughter, Angela Campos of Anaheim, Calif.; brothers, Dallas and Frank-ie McCoy of Crab Orchard; sisters, Barbara Browning of Florida and Alicia Rasnick of Charleston; and five grandchildren, Emily McCoy, Sidney McCoy, Patrick Campos, Frankie Campos and Austin Campos.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Glen White Church of God with Pastor Jesse Farley officiating. Military honors will be presented by Sophia-Midway VFW Post 4326.

Shirley Jo ‘Snooks’ Meador

Shirley Jo “Snooks” Meador, 67, of Daniels, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 11, 2006, at her home following a long illness.

Born at Eccles on Sept. 11, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Ben and Ruby Evans Ferguson, and the stepdaughter of the late Mildred Webster Ferguson.

Mrs. Meador was a homemaker and was a member of Daniels Missionary Baptist Church and Blue Jay United Methodist Church. She was a former president of the Shady Spring Woman’s Club, a member of the Shady Spring Garden Club, the Red Hat Society, Christian Women’s Club, the Little Beaver State Park Association and friends of the Shady Spring Library.

She was an avid WVU Mountaineer fan.

Mrs. Meador was preceded in death by a brother, Benjamin Ferguson; and a sister, Connie Lewis.

Survivors include her husband, James C. Hoover Meador; sons, Michael Lee Harris of Abingdon, Va., J.D. Meador of Daniels and friend, Jennifer, and Jeremy L. Meador and wife, Amy, of Beaver; daughter, Louann Broyles and husband, Tom, of Beckley; a brother, Bud Ferguson of Stover; a sister, Danese Divers of Stover; six grandchildren, Isaac and Sarah Broyles, Dillon and Hunter Meador, and Brooklyn and Haley Meador; other special children in her life, Paige and Jacob Childers and Lauryn Quintana; special sister, Helen Mize of Wytheville, Va.; and her special pet, Odie. “She was a mother and Nanna to all who knew her.”

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Betty Lusk and Rev. Jack Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Michael Harris, J.D. Meador, Jeremy Meador, Tom Broyles, Isaac Broyles and Gregg Childers.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Southern West Virginia for their support, and in lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV, in memory of Mrs. Meador.
