Mary Helen Parker

BELLVILLE, Ohio — Mary Helen Parker, 89, formerly of Sarton, passed away Thursday morning, May 11, 2006, at Bellville following a long illness.

Born April 28, 1917, in Monroe County, she was a daughter of the late Russell Hayes and Dora Lee Byers Weikle.

Mrs. Parker was a member of the Mount Herman Baptist Church, Sarton.

She was a homemaker and retired plant worker.

Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Harley Parker, on Oct. 25, 2001; two sons, Denver and Carol Parker; three brothers, Gerald, Remus and Arvel Weikle; and two sisters, Mazie Kate Matey and Lucille Weikle.

Surviving are two sisters, Marie Pence of Sarton and Ruby Pence of Peterstown; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Groves Funeral Home Chapel, Union, with the Rev. Bob Ratliff officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Herman Baptist Church cemetery, Sarton.

Friends may call noon until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Groves Funeral Home, Union, is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Sanford Stover

Joseph Sanford Stover, 83, of Dameron, died Thursday, May 11, 2006, at his home after a long illness.

He was born May 7, 1923, at Clear Creek, a son of the late Walter and Rose Scarbro Stover.

He was previously employed by Wilson and Asplundh Tree Co.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ray Junior Stover; and two sisters, Nealy Atha and Nora Bell Atha.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Bessie Stover; two daughters, Juanita Holstein of Coal River Road and Judy Cook of Mabscott; three sons, Roger and Bobby Stover of Dameron and Wade Stover of Harper Heights; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Dameron Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Lucas officiating. Burial will follow in Stover cemetery, Dameron.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Mary Elizabeth Wagner

MESA, Ariz. — Mary Elizabeth Arnott Wagner, 82, formerly of Lorain, Ohio, died Wednesday evening, May 10, 2006, at the Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland following a brief illness.

Mrs. Wagner was born in Beckley on July 27, 1932. She held a master’s degree from West Virginia State University. She was a retired kindergarten and elementary school teacher for Lorain City Schools. She retired in 1984. She moved to Mesa in 2002.

She enjoyed thrift store shopping and collecting antiques.

She is survived by three sons, Charles Wagner of Minnetonka, Minn., Ted Wagner of San Mateo, Calif., Mark Wagner of Mesa; five grandchildren; a sister, Jean Wendt of North Palm Beach, Fla.; and brother, Charles Arnott of Beckley.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Theodore F. Wagner, in 1995; parents, Henry and Carrie (Dunbar) Arnott; and a brother, Ralph Arnott.

Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. Fifth St., Lorain.

Service will be private.

INDIAN CREEK — Ollie Jane Helmandollar Arrington West, 89, passed away Friday, May 12, 2006, at her residence following a sudden illness.

Flossie Augusta Woolwine Pinnell

ALDERSON — Flossie Augusta Woolwine Pinnell, age 104 years, seven months and eight days, of Alderson, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at White Sulphur Springs Genesis Center following a short illness.

Born Sept. 10, 1901, at Cirtsville, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Woolwine, who was a teacher and berry farmer, and Anna Eliza Tyree Woolwine.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Owens Pinnell Sr.; a son, Emmett Owens Pinnell Jr.; three brothers, Jack Woolwine, Roscoe Woolwine and Carl Woolwine; six sisters, Gertrude Ayers, Lottie Nava, Agnes Smithson, Mildred Phillips, Bernice Jackson and Mary Woolwine; a grandson, Frederick Spencer Hardesty; and son-in-law, Edward Hardesty.

Mrs. Pinnell was a 94-year resident of Alderson, having lived in Alderson since the age of 11. She was educated in one-room schools and attended the Alderson Collegiate Institute (ACI) through the 11th grade. She was a member of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, for 90 years, where she was a member of the Ruth Thurmond Circle, taught the Emma Alderson Sunday School Class and played the piano. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living member of the church, having been baptized in the old wooden church.

Mrs. Pinnell was a homemaker, an avid gardener and seamstress and was always proud of the fact that she sat on the lap of William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield and pulled his beard as a youngster.

Survivors include a son, Richard O. Pinnell of Alderson; a daughter, Clara Pinnell Hardesty of Alderson; two sisters, Cora Baker of Alderson and Rose Matthews of Washington state; three grandchildren, Rebecca Hardesty Pence and her husband, Boyd, of Alderson, Kathy Pinnell Boone and her husband, Mikel, of Charleston and Scott Pinnell of Alderson; six great-grandchildren, Kenneth Pence of Alderson, Kristy Pence Schoonover and her husband, Darryl, of Fredericksburg, Va., Sidney Jo Hardesty and her mother, Joanne Lightner, of Alderson, and Carrie Pinnell, Michael Pinnell and Tyler Pinnell, all of Alderson; a great-great-granddaughter, Leah Elaine Schoonover of Fredericksburg; daughter-in-law, Betty Pinnell Smith of Alderson; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, with the Rev. Mark Stauffer and the Rev. Gary Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Alderson cemetery.

Friends may call 1 to 2 p.m. today at the church.

Pallbearers will be Dee Baker, Jerry Baker, Gary Baker, Coleman Highlander, Kenny Pence, Boyd Pence and Scott Pinnell.

SPANISHBURG — Raymond M. “Buzz” Sharp, 67, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006.

Mildred H. ‘Midge’ Simmons

FRANKFORD — Mildred H. “Midge” Simmons, 58, of Meadow Brook Estates, pass-ed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Low Moor, Va.

Born June 27, 1947, at White Sulphur Springs, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Biddie McMillion Blankenship.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ada Hammons; and two brothers, Gilbert and Howard Blankenship.

Midge was a supervisor for Kellwood Co. until its closing and was the office manager for Morgan Funeral Home for the past 10 years.

Survivors include her husband, James H. “Pat” Simmons; daughter, Samantha “Sam” Crone and husband, Lee, of Friars Hill; grandchildren, Jamie, Heather and Robbie Crone; and six sisters, Edith Hammons of Lewisburg, Myrlie Burks of Auto, Shirley Eagle and Pearl McCoy of Frankford, Nellie Bragg of Asbury and Judy Simmons of Lewisburg.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Lula Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Lewis Chapel cemetery, Vago.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Barbara Lenora Smith

Barbara Lenora Smith, 81, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006.

Born Sept. 14, 1924, at Glen Morrison in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late O.A. and the late Anna Smith.

Miss Smith was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, Raleigh County Chapter No. 18. She served in the U.S. WAVES in World War II. In 1972 and 1973, she was the senior vice commander of the DAV, State of West Virginia, in 1975 to 1980 she was the WAVES department rep for the veterans hospital in Beckley, 1979-1980 she was the deputy chief of staff for the West Virginia DAV, 1980-1983, she was the state hospital WAVES chairman for the DAV, State. Mrs. Smith was the commander of Chapter No. 18 for 18 years and held the office of adjunct secretary-treasurer for 14 years and the adjunct secretary for three years. She was the owner Barbara’s Arts and Crafts at Piney View for 14 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Smith.

Those left to cherish her memory include her four sisters, Marcell Brakefield of Trafford, Ala., Lourel Horman of Colorado Springs, Colo., Phyllis Graham of Fisher-ville, Va., and Elizabeth Bragg of Flint, Mich.; two brothers, Fred Smith of Mabscott and John Smith of Mahnton, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be noon Sunday, April 23, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Hilda Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Family and friends will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements.

Debra ‘Suzy’ Cole Toler

PRINCETON — Debra “Suzy” Cole Toler, 46, died Monday, April 17, 2006.

James L. Viney Jr.

ALDERSON — James Leonard Viney Jr., 28, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, from injuries sustained in a four-wheeler accident on Blue Sulphur Springs Road, Alderson.

Born Aug. 23, 1977, at Hinton, he was the son of James Viney Sr. of Alderson and Mary Mann Viney of Alderson.

Mr. Viney was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Opie Viney and Lawrence Mann; stepgrandfather, Charles Lego; an uncle, Gene Mann; and a cousin, Fred Poindexter.

James was a former employee of Unique Balance Plastic Processing Plant at Pence Springs and was a temporary worker at The Greenbrier Sporting Club, White Sulphur Springs. He was a former sales associate for Sprint, Clarksville, Tenn., and a welder. He attended Alderson schools and was a 1995 graduate of Greenbrier East High School, Fairlea.

James was a U.S. Army veteran, having served six years, stationed in Hawaii in the 235th Infantry. He was recently reassigned to the 201st FA, Lewisburg. He was taking online classes through Axia College and the Art Institute. Mr. Viney was of the Baptist faith and loved working with kids. He enjoyed cooking and restoring old cars, especially Cadillacs.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Mann Viney of Alderson; his father, James Viney Sr. of Alderson; three brothers, Jon Viney of Alderson, Joel Viney of Roanoke, Va., and Jamell Viney of Ronceverte; three sisters, Jennifer Viney of Alderson, Patricia Viney of Roanoke and Kristie Viney of California; grandmothers, Barbara Lego of Alderson and Virginia Viney of Columbus, Ohio; a niece, Alyka Fenderson of Roanoke; three nephews, John Marshall IV of Alderson, Jon Viney II of Alderson and Jashon Fenderson of Roanoke; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Nathaniel Carey and the Rev. Nathaniel Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Old Greenbrier Baptist cemetery, Alderson.

Friends may call noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Sheldon Bowyer, Gary “J.R.” Bostic, Robert Hopkins, Curtis Haynes, Ron Hopkins, Ryan Stafford and Charles Brooks.

Military funeral honors will be conducted by the West Virginia Army National Guard.

NALLEN — Abe Lincoln Boley, 101, of Nallen, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, in Hilltop Center, Oak Hill, following a short illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smathers Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in cemetery Hill at Russellville.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
