MARLINTON — Thelma Roop Harper, 95, formerly of Summersville, died April 18, 2007.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Huntersville. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton.

Merle Willis Hart

Honorable Merle Willis Hart, 95, of 218 Corban Ave., Concord, N.C., formerly of Mullens, and New Castle, Pa., died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at 12:45 p.m. at home.

Born March 3, 1912, in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

He was a World War II veteran having served in the Coast Guard Intelligence. He was a retired Judge and Magistrate in the State of Pennsylvania, and he was of the Episcopal faith.

Mr. Hart graduated from NeCa High School, he attended law school at the University of Michigan, then transferred to graduate from Ohio Northern University. He was also a graduate of Harvard University with a degree in Economics.

He formerly played professional football for the Boston Redskins. He was a member of the New Castle Country Club in New Castle, Pa., a former columnist for the New Castle News, an avid bowler with Wabash Bears bowling league. He was a judge and magistrate and after retiring from the bench, he served as a federal arbitrator with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. He was the C.E.O. of Interstate Creamory based in New Castle, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Stewart Hart, on June 3, 2003; his father, Willis Asa Hart; and his mother, Madoline McNally Hart.

Survivors include a son, Winsor Hart of Mullens, formerly of Midland, N.C.; daughter, Rebekah Hart-O’Sullivan of Concord, N.C.; granddaughter, Madelyn Elkins of West Virginia; and three grandsons, Duncan O‘Sullivan, Logan O’Sullivan, and Bryce O’Sullivan, all of Concord, N.C.

There are no services scheduled at this time.

Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Boy Scout Road, Kannapolis, N.C. 28081, Charlene Hart Memorial Scholarship Fund w/ Beckley area foundation, 129 Main St. Suite 203, Beckley, W.Va. 25801.

Claudell Oyenik

Claudell N. Free Oyenik, 78, of Chicago Heights, Ill., formerly of Glen Rogers, died Monday, April 16, 2007, in Chicago Heights.

Born May 27, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Marshall and Ethel McGaha Free.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Oyenik.

Survivors include three sons: Alan Wilburn and wife Carla of San Francisco, Calif., Gary Oyenik and wife Deborah of Crete, Ill., and Bruce Oyenik and wife Sandra of Chicago Heights; a stepson, Raymond Oyenik and wife Nell of Chesapeake, Va.; five grandchildren: Nicholas, Brigitte, Miles, Douglas and Kimberly; three stepgrandchildren: John Paul, Brian and Nicole; four great-grandchildren: Sophia, Gannon, Scott and Joshua; a sister, Juanita Summers and husband Wayne of Galax, Va., and a sister-in-law Opal Free of West Virginia; and by many nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Wallace York officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park cemetery, Beckley.

Friends may call 3 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, at the funeral home.

Wilbur W. Pack

HINTON — Wilbur W. Pack, 75, died April 17, 2007, in the McDowell Nursing Center at Gary following a long illness.

Born July 12, 1931, at Zion Mountain, he was a son of the late Charles L. and Grace Mae Harvey Pack.

Mr. Pack attended Roles Chapel Baptist Church.

He enjoyed being around children and was full of the energetic life that they gave him.

Preceded in death by four sisters, Sadie Pack, Nannie Ramsey, Annie Yancey and Marie Meadows; six brothers, Lacy, Woodrow, Harley, Junior, Cletis and Mike Pack.

Survived by three daughters, Janet, Ruth Ann Booth and Audrey; one son, Landy Pack; one brother, William Curtis Pack of Lancaster, Ohio; and one sister, Pauline Carter of Shady Spring.

Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2007, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in the Roles Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Funeral Parlors.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Clinton Malcolm Pennington

Clinton Malcolm Pennington, age 44, of Palm Bay, Fla., formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, in Melbourne, Fla., as a result of an automobile accident.

Mr. Pennington was a construction worker in Florida and had made his home in Florida for the past 10 years, having lived in Beckley, for most of his life.

Mr. Pennington was born in Beckley on May 19, 1962, he was the son of the late Nyal Pennington and Henrietta Stover Pennington Starr, and the stepson of Howard Starr, of Palm Bay, Fla.

He was preceded in death by a stepbrother, Jim Starr.

Other survivors include sisters, Cheryl Pennington of Beckley, Charlotte Helmick and companion, Nick Schartz of Fort Worth, Texas, Nila Porter and husband, Danny, of Beckley, and Robin Hendershot of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Jason Pennington of Palm Bay, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; a stepsister, Marsha Starr of Hamlin, W.Va.; and several uncles and aunts.

Services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with a eulogy by Arolette Stover.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, bus ministry, 2980 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne, Fla. 32935.

MADISONVILLE, Ky. — Alice Ann Pugh, formerly of Glen Morgan, died Thursday, April 19, 2007, in Madisonville, Ky., following a long illness.

Mary Thelma Richardson

OAK HILL — Mary Thelma Richardson, age 94, of Oak Hill, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at Oak Hill.

Mary was the daughter of the late Theodore and Eliza O’Connor Kincaid. She was a loving Mother and Grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Adam W. Richardson Sr.; son Adam Richardson Jr.; daughters Catherine Benkendorfor, Helen Trail; and son-in-law Gilbert Trail; grandsons Brian Richardson and Robert Richardson.

Those left to cherish her memory include daughters Sylvia Smith and her husband Darrell of Oak Hill and Connie Smith and her husband David of Beckley; son George Richardson and his wife Brenda of Buckhannon; daughter-in-law Phyllis Richardson of Glen Rogers; brother Kenneth Kincaid and his wife Sylvia of Florida; sister Irene Pugh of Danese; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2007, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Ronnie Stapleton officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ida Sue Rider Shertzer

CORLISS — Ida Sue Rider Shertzer, 96, died Monday, April 16, 2007, at her home, following a sudden illness, but had a good long life.

Born Jan. 10, 1911, at Alderson, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Lillie Ann Rider.

Mrs. Shertzer joined the Minnie Belle Baptist Church at Corliss in 1925, was a member of the Longdale Chapter No. 83, Order of The Eastern Star, at Lookout, was a member of High Country Garden Club, was a registered nurse, a Red Cross nurse, and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph W. Shertzer, in 1992; two sisters, Virginia May Rider in 1984, and Hazel Grace Shawver in 1994; four brothers, John Wesley Rider Jr. in 1983, Lonnie C. Rider in 1983, Ted H. Rider Sr. in 1991, and Paul R. Rider in 2001.

Survivors include a sister, Lucye J. Snyder of Charleston; a stepson, William A. Shertzer and wife, Joyce, of Morriston, Fla., and their two daughters, Mary McNulty and husband, Michael, and Cheryl Hazle and husband, Wayne, and son, William A. Shertzer Jr. and wife, Judy; five great-grandchildren, Michael and Matthew McNulty, Alison and Shannon Hazle and Kate Shertzer.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Pastor Gene Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens at Victor, beside her husband, Joseph, with military graveside rites by the Ansted VFW.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. There will be an Order of the Eastern Star service by the Lawton Chapter of Danese at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy be made to Rainelle Public Library, 312 Seventh St., Rainelle, W.Va. 25962.

Fred Wilson Thomas Jr.

Fred Wilson Thomas Jr., age 73, of 192 Hoist Road, Beckley, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following a short illness.

Born at Beckley on May 2, 1933, he was the son of the late Fred W. Thomas Sr. and Rose Irvin Thomas.

Mr. Thomas was retired from the U.S. Military, having served for 27 years in the U.S. Army, retiring with the rank of Warrant Officer 2. He had served in both the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts.

Mr. Thomas was very active in the VFW in Goose Creek, S.C., where he had served as past commander. He was also a member of the American Legion. Mr. Thomas had made his home in Goose Creek, S.C., for most of his life, returning to Beckley for the past eight months. He attended the Glen Morgan Missionary Baptist Church at Glen Morgan.

Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, Fay Thomas; and a brother, Joe Thomas.

Survivors include sons, John Wilson Thomas and wife, Karen, of Daniels and Fred Williams Thomas and wife, Virginia, of Apalachicola, Fla.; brothers, John Franklin Thomas and wife, Arbutus, of Richmond, Va., and James Thomas and wife, Mary Jean, of Marion, Ill.; sisters, Shirley Smith and husband, James, of Louisville, Ky., Sharon Lilly of Glen Morgan, and Debbie Gillian and husband, Clark, of Grandview; grandchildren: Fred William Thomas Jr. and wife, Laura, of Panama City, Fla., Jill Boyce and husband, Daniel, of Morgantown, Erica West and husband, Michael, of Panama City, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Matt Thomas, Zachary Thomas and Isabelle West.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Glen Morgan Missionary Baptist Church at Glen Morgan, with the Rev. Grayson C. Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today, Friday, at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 Honor Guard.

Mason Trent, 79, formerly of Wharncliffe, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007.

Graveside service will be at Beechfork cemetery, Wharncliffe. Friends may call 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert.

Beverly Joyce Dockery VanHoye

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Beverly Joyce Dockery VanHoye, age 53, of White Sulphur Springs, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a sudden illness.

Born Sept. 21, 1953, in Lincoln, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Harold Theodore and Dorothy Clay Dockery.

Mrs. VanHoye was a homemaker and attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church in White Sulphur Springs. She enjoyed walking and loved her pets.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Rodney Edward VanHoye of White Sulphur Springs; two brothers, Harold Theodore Dockery Jr. of Lincoln, Ala., and Bobby Eugene Dockery and his wife, Cindy, of Lincoln, Ala.; two sisters, Mary Dockery of Lincoln, Ala., and Lorrie M. Dockery of Talladega, Ala.; many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Alabama and West Virginia.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today, Friday, April 20, 2007, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Gene Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow in the Fletcher Addition of the Alderson cemetery, Alderson.

Friends may call 1 to 2 p.m. today, Friday, April 20, 2007, at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
