Mark Wayne Hatfield

Mark Wayne Hatfield, 48, of Milton went home to be with his Lord Thursday, Oct 14, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Tracy Mills officiating. Burial in Milton Cemetery. Mark was born Oct. 22, 1955, in Milton, a son of the late Ervin Eugene Hatfield. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Larry Eugene Hatfield. Mark is survived by his loving mother, Mildred and his stepfather, Bill Hughes of Culloden; one son and daughter-in-law, Andrew Wesley and Faith Hatfield of New Brocton, Ala., loving companion, Maxine Ratcliff of Milton; two grandchildren, Scotty Hatfield and Cierra Hatfield; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger and Debbie Hatfield of Ironton, Ohio, and Ronnie and Dee Hatfield of Milton, special friends, Jeff Smith of Culloden and Jack and Fay Adkins; and special buddy, Coty, his loving dog. Robert `Bob' Johnson

Robert “Bob” Johnson, 93, of Ona, W.Va, for of Huntington, Salt Rock and Myra, W.Va, died at home Friday, Oct 15, 2004. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosabel and Charles Johnson; his brothers, Charles Johnson and Dewey Johnson; his sisters Jettie Heck, Lily Adkins Taylor, Garnett Johnson, Alma Johnson, Pearl Johnson; his son-in-law, Leonard Hand, and his beloved wife Reva Arlene Harbour Johnson. He iz survived by his four children and their spouses, Robert and Ann Johnson, Dewey and Shirley Johnson, Sandra Hand and Delores and Roland Esque.

He and his wife were married for 65 short years, during which they saw their small family of four children grown, blessing them with their greatest joy - grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had 14 grandchildren, Cynthia Johnson Adam, Laura Johnson Inman, Tracy Johnson, Amy Johnson Smith, Richard Johnson, Danny Johnson, Beth Johnson Gillespie, David Johnson, Greg Johnson, Deborah Johnson, Arthur Hand, Katie Hand McCallister, Doug Esque and Crystal Esque Welch and their spouses.

His 16 great-grandchildren are Nathan Adam, Lauren Adam, Emily Inman, Caroline Inman, Bobby Johnson IV, Braxton Johnson, Sammie Smith, Sophie Smith, Jacob Johnson, Trevor Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Justin Gillespie, Andrew Gillespie, Josh McCallister, Elizabeth Esque and Nathan Welch. Additionally, he is survived by two nieces, Alma Johnson and Mabel Gordon; a nephew, Billy Jo Adkins; and sisters- and brothers-in-law, Frennis Harbour, Dorothy Harbour, Fern and Les Maynard, Julie Alberta Clark, Dessie Harbour, Juanita and Jack Adkins, Ouida and Emerson Pearson, Winston and Reba Harbour, Edward and Rachel Harbour and Judy and Bob Loudermilk and their combined 34 children and families.

Throughout his 93 years, he was blessed with his family, far too many friends to list and thoughtful and caring neighbors, all of which, in turn, felt blessed by his friendship. He was a Methodist by faith and first met the Lord at the Methodist church in Myra, W Va, where as a child, he was regularly allowed to ring the bell in the church's bell tower. As an adult, he attended Salt Rock Methodist Church and knew many Faith United Methodist Church, Huntington, members well. He worked as a drill press operator for the American Car and Foundry for “43 years, 3 months and 5 days” as he so often quoted. Johnson-Nichols Funeral Home, Wayne, was in charge of arrangements. Funeral services were held Monday, October 18, 2004, with burial following at Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock, WV.

John Donald “Don” Weaver

John Donald “Don” Weaver, 70, of Lesage, husband of Louise Weaver, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. He graduated from Milton High School and attended Marshall University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. After 37 years at Kinney Shoe Corporation, he retired in 1996 as superintendent. Pastor Eddie Salmons conducted funeral services Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at the Wallace Funeal Home and Chapel, Barboursville. Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery, Glenwood, WV. Don was born Aug. 25, 1934, in Huntington, WV, a son of the late Virgil and Agnes Lewis Weaver. He was preceded in death by his brother, Virgil Lee Weaver, Jr.; grandparents-in-law, Lester and Margaret Henry; and sisters-in-law, Tammy Holley- White and Dianah Holley. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Louise Weaver. Also surviving are his two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Lenora Weaver of Colorado and Terry and Lisa Ray of Huntington; two daughters, Julie Weaver and Toni Brocksmith of Florida; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tina and Dale Freeman of Ohio and Teresa and Larry Clark of Lesage; 12 lovely grandchildren, Julian, Daniel, Gillis, Maggie, Bailey, Lauren, Erin, Kevin, Kendra, Lara, LaKota and Ethan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard an Ella Mae Weaver of Texas and Raymond and Linda Weaver and Charles and Janet Weaver, all of Ona; one sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Danny Nance of South Caroline; mother-in-law, Faye Jordan of Ona;

five brothers and sisters-in-law, June and Kelly Holley of South Carolina, William and Mary Holley of Huntington, Ronnie, Johnny and Timmy Holley of Ona and Delores and Neal Collins of Ona; several special nieces and nephews; and also two very special friends, Dice and Judy Steele of Glenville, WV. Pallbearers were Ronnie, Ronald, Johnny and Timmy Holley, Neal Collins and Lee Henry. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Virgil David Boggs

Virgil David Boggs, 89, of Milton, died Tuesday, October 12, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Friday, October 15, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by the Rev. Carl Cooper. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. He was born April 28, 1915, to Stephen and Rhoda Phipps Boggs of Kentucky. He was proud to be a West Virginia coal miner early in life and a CSX Railroad retiree. He was a member of the Lebanon Masonic Lodge, #68 of Milton, AF&AM a member of the Scottish Rites of Huntington and also a longtime member of Pleasant Valley Freewill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Golda Leah Hammond Boggs. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Faye and Everett Childers of Milton, W.Va., Dorothy Compton of South Charleston, W.Va., Loretta Dewese of Beckley, W.Va., Hattie Mynes of Winfield, W.Va., Virgil David Boggs, Jr. and Kathy Boggs of Milton, W.Va., and Carolyn and Bill McGhee of Charleston, W.Va.; one sister Marjorie Smith of Ashland, Ky., 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two step-great- grandchildren. Masonic graveside services were conducted by the Lebanon Masonic Lodge, #68.

Edwin Leo “Rick” Lester

Edwin Lee “Rick” Lester, 51, of South Point, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 11, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Friday, October 15, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Kim Stone. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. He was born August 27, 1953, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of Virginia Bailey Lester of Huntington and Ransom Lester of Milton. He was owner and operator of Frosty's Chevron in Charleston and former owner of Washington Avenue Chevron. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and had served in the Army National Guard for eight years. He is survived by his wife, Lois Bryant Lester; five children, Katelynn Lester and Corey Allison Lester at home, Anna Lester of Ashland, Ky. and her mother Jacqueline Lester, Daniel Lester and Adam Lester of Charleston and their mother, Rebecca Lester; three sisters and their husbands, Diana and Robin Virgillo of South Point, Noraeen and Doug Miller, of Barboursville and Ruth and Ted Justice of Proctorville; two grandsons, Austin Layne Lester and Braedon Lee Lester; two nephews, Bradley Justice and Nathan Virgillo; five nieces, Kerry Virgillo, Stephanie Virgillo, Missy Miller, Jennifer Justice and Kelsey Justice. “Rick” was a loving, son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and uncle who will be missed very much by his family and friends.

Jane Wheeler

Mrs. Jane Wheeler, 70, of Huntington, a faithful servant of Christ, loving wife of 51 years, mother and grandmother went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at her home. She was born February 7, 1934, at Fairview, W.Va., the daughter of the late James and Celesta Tennent Williams and the youngest of 13 children. She was retired from Avon Products, where she served as District Manager and a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Donald “Don” Wheeler Sr., three children and their spouses, Don Jr. and Kathy Wheeler of Mobile, Ala., Pastor Rob and Paula Wheeler of Oak Lawn, Ill., Mary and Ken Pemberton, of Huntington. Also survived are her grandchildren, Joshua and Anna Jane Wheeler of Mobile, Ala., Ryan, Robbie, and Rhett Wheeler of Oak Lawn, Ill. and Heather, Melissa, Chad, and Kendra Pemberton of Huntington. Jane was a member of Grace Gospel Church for many years. Services were conducted Friday, October 15, 2004, at Henson Mortuary with Pastor Robert O. Wheeler and Pastor Brady K. Lipscomb officiating. Burial in East Ashland Memorial Gardens, Ashland, Ky. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Hospice of Huntington.

Mary Lea Agee

Mary Lea Simpson Agee, 63, of Cross Lanes, formerly of Buffalo, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at home following a long illness.

She was an elementary teacher, having taught at Timberlake Christian School, Lynchburg, Va., a supervisor in the registrar's office at Liberty University, Lynchburg, and a member of Cross Lanes Bible Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Eldie Simpson; a sister, Ruby May Simpson; and three brothers, Jerry, Jackie and Harold Simpson.

Survivors include: husband, Harold Agee; mother, Helen Simpson Grady of Leon; son,. Tony Harmon of Rock Branch; daughter, Debbie Melton of Wisconsin; brother, Eddie Dale “Bucky' Simpson of Leon; sisters, Faye Searls of Hurricane, Janice Mitchell, of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Geneva Persinger. of Mount Gilead, Ohio; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Cross Lanes Bible Church, Cross Lanes, with Dr. David Buckley officiating. Burial in Buffalo Memorial Park, Buffalo.

Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Anna L. Basham

Anna “Louise” Basham, 78, of Bancroft passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, after a long illness.

She was born Sept. 15, 1926, in Asheville, N.C., a daughter of the late James S. and Anna C. Shipman.

She was a longtime employee of Charleston Telephone Answering Service, Charleston. After her retirement, she enjoyed babysitting for various families in the Charleston area. She was a former member of Beta Sigma Phi, Omega Chapter.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin R. Basham.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan T. Martin of Red House; son, Luther C. Basham of Cedar Grove; grandchildren, Earl R. Hill of Red House, Erica L. Hill of Charleston, Bo Price of Leesville, SC; great-granddaughter, Alyssa Price of Leesville; sister, Dorothy Bolten of Marion, NC; and a very special friend and caregiver, Anne Dean of Bancroft.

The family would like to give a special “thank you” to HospiceCare.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004 at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, with the Rev. David Panaro officiating.

William F. Farmer

William P `Bill” Farmer, 87, of Scott Depot died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital after an apparent heart attack.

Bin was a 39 year resident of Putnam County and a retired carpenter with over 52 years of service with Carpenters Union Local 1207, Charleston. Bill was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He attended Winfield Community Church.

Surviving: wife, Wanda Persinger Farmer at home; sons, David and J.C. Farmer of Scott Depot, Bob Farmer of Hurricane and Steve Farmer of Winfield; daughters, Karen McCallister of South Carolina and Sue Bowman of Scott Depot; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, Nitro, with the Rev. Mike Rader and the Rev. Ronnie Tucker officiating. Burial in Schowen Cemetery, Bancroft.

Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, was in charge of arrangements.

Guy Laffoon Nisbet Jr.

Guy Laffoon Nisbet Jr., 70, of Winfield, WV, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital, Hurricane, after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy L. Nisbet, Sr., and Martha B. Nisbet of Winfield, WV.

He was a former employee of Broughton Dairy and the self-employed owner of the former Winfield Supermarket. He was a member of the Dunbar Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, Beni Kedem Temple and the Nitro Moose Lodge. He was the president of the Winfield Seniors, a member of the Silver Haired Legislature and was on the board of the directors of Multi-CAP. He was also active and involved in the achievements and improvements of various areas of Winfield and Putnam County. He was an annual planner and organizer of the Charleston South Park Mission Hollow Reunion. He was a graduate of Charleston High School Class of 1952 and served eight years in the Navy Reserves.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Modina S. Nisbet of Winfield; son, Guy L. Nisbet III and wife, Patricia of Charleston; daughter, Teresa A. Nisbet of Winfield; and six grandchildren, Jessica R. Nisbet of Columbia, Md., Nathan R. Nisbet and wife, Sarah of St. Albans, Jonathan V. Nisbet of Scott Depot, WV, Bryant A. Nisbet, Phillip S. Nisbet and M. Nicole Nisbet of Winfield; and sisters, Oralee Nisbet Kieffer of Bedford, Pa., and Emma Nisbet Firetti of Columbia, Md.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m .Wednesday at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, WV, with the Rev. Mike Rader officiating. Burial in Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans with Masonic graveside services.

Erma B. Chapman

Erma B. Chapman, 82, of Poca went to be with our Lord in Heaven, Oct. 7, 2004, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

In younger years, Erma was an accomplished seamstress and, later in life, took pride in bowling, participating in leagues at Town and Country Lanes, Nitro. She also loved feeding and watching wildlife.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Sarah Keith Brown; husband, James Milford Chapman; brothers, Lloyd, Orville, Everett and Fred; sisters, Macel, Alice, Sadie and Delcie; and grandson, Paul Ryan Stapleton.

She is survived by: daughter and son-in-law, Rosa and Paul Stapleton of Poca; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Bobbi Chapman of Poca; grandchildren, Rob Wilkinson of Poca and Calvin Curtis Hudson and Andy Hudson, both of Delaware; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Alex Wilkinson and Greg, Andy II and Brent Hudson; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home with Pastor Jason Thomas officiating. Burial in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Johnny Lee Fields

Johnny Lee Fields, 64, of Nitro died Oct. 8, 2004, at Patty's House of Care, Hometown.

Johnny was retired from the City of Dunbar with 17 years of service. He loved to fish and watch NASCAR.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Odell and Mae Fields.

Johnny is survived by his children, Kerri Lynn Fields of Sissonville, and Terry Fields of Poca; sisters, Patricia Haynes, Kathie Skeens, and Georgia Kidd of Cross Lanes, Juanita Ash of Huntington, WVa., and Barbara French of Red House; brothers, Jackie, Timmy, and Randy Fields of Poca, WVa., Dennis and Robert Fields of Nitro, and Ricky Fields of Cross Lanes; several nieces, nephews, a host of friends, and a special thanks. to Kay and Brenda Fields for their care and support.

Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home with Pastor Jason Thomas officiating. Burial in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Samuel R. Hardway

Samuel R. Hardway, 70, of Poca, died Oct. 4, 2004, at home after a short illness.

Samuel was a retired welder from Union Boiler, Nitro, with 20 years of service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pat Hardway; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Brian Wood of Cross Lanes. son, Jason Hardway of Cross Lanes; granddaughter, Sarah Weaver of Cross Lanes; brother, James Hardway of Cross Lanes; sisters, Erma Todd of Cross Lanes, Evelyn Gannon of Spring Hill.

Private graveside services were held at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
