Edith Lorraine Martin

SEAL BEACH, Calif. — 1926 to 2007 — Prominent Long Beach matriarch Edith “Edie” Lorraine Rule Martin passed away Friday, March 23, 2007. Edie was one of a kind. She was a beloved member of the community who was happy to lend a hand whenever she could. She spent countless hours helping the people she loved, from working on her daughter and son-in-law’s political campaigns (she could type more than 100 words a minute), to baby-sitting her grandkids and great-grandkids, to cooking gourmet feasts for her neighbors at Leisure World.

For the last 15 years Edie resided in Seal Beach. Previous to that she lived in the Los Angeles and Long Beach area. She grew up in Oak Hill, where she was known as “Lorraine.” She loved being part of the Oak Hill High School Red Devil band, and during one of her visits to Oak Hill, she said that any time she heard “On Wisconsin,” she felt that she was marching down Main Street playing “On Red Devils” on her own clarinet under the watchful eye of band director Paul Mackey. married to her high school sweetheart, John Fitzpatrick, she was widowed while still a teenager when he died in battle during World War II. She later married Virgil Martin, and in 1950 they left Oak Hill behind, moving to California with their children, John, Freda and Carol.

Edie worked for many years at Douglas Aircraft, where she provided secretarial support on classified missile and space projects. During that time she and Virgil restored two classic 1957 Thunderbirds and were active in the Early Birds, a club for T-Bird owners. Their beautiful cars were used to transport dignitaries in parades throughout the southland. In 1992 Edie retired from California State University-Long Beach after working for 10 years in the Information Technology Department.

She was an active member of St. Mary Medical Center Guild, an expert crossword puzzle-worker and an avid “Jeopardy” fan. Her family and friends have many wonderful memories of watching that game show with her, martini in hand, of course.

Edie was a strong-willed, independent woman. She was the kind of person people sought wisdom from and she always delivered it with honesty and love. No matter where she was, she stayed in touch with her network of friends in California and West Virginia, sending advice, admonitions, stories and jokes over e-mail. Her sharp mind and wit made her a great confidante and advisor.

To her many doting children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Edie was known as “Dede.” She will be greatly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Freda Hinsche Otto and Doug Otto of Long Beach and daughter Carol Ferguson of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren, Brenda Hinsche Balfrey, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Grady Hinsche, Kyle Ferguson, Shannon Fitzpatrick Lauricella and Ronica Ferguson, as well as 10 much-loved great-grandchildren.

Local survivors include her dear aunt, Katie Pinson; her cousins, Virginia Allen, Sue Navicki and Margaret Evans; her lifelong friend, Wanda Kinder Spessard, all of Oak Hill; and a host of “kissing cousins” and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, John Fitzpatrick, and her parents, Edith and A.L. “Brownie” Rule.

In accordance with her wishes, her remains were cremated. A private memorial was held at her daughter’s home in Long Beach, Calif., on April 8. She will return for a final trip to her beloved West Virginia hills in the fall, where she will be interred with the remains of her parents. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Oak Hill High School Alumni Association.
