SCARBRO — Bessie “Gran-ny Mae” Wriston Scarbro, 90, of Route 1, left this life to await the rapture of the saints of our Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at an Oak Hill care center.
She was born Aug. 12, 1915, at Mossy, the daughter of the late William “Bill” and Martha Stover Wriston.
Mrs. Scarbro was a homemaker. She spent many years of her life attending church at Oak Hill Apostolic Holiness Church and the Beckwith Apostolic Church, Beckwith; she was a faithful soldier for her Lord.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Marvin K. Scarbro, in July 1988; an infant son, Bobby Dayton Scarbro; three brothers, Allie, Troy, and Clarence Wriston; and three sisters, Tellie Stover, Kathleen Wendell and Violet Scarbro.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include a son, Larry N. Scarbro of Rt. 1, Scarbro; a daughter, Judith Lively and her husband, Roma M. Lively of Rt. 1, Scarbro; two grandsons, Randy Lively of Rt. 1, Scarbro, and Jeffrey Lively and his wife, Bonnie, of Oak Hill; several nieces and nephews.
She loved her family dearly and also left behind a host of friends and brothers and sisters of her church family and a very good friend and neighbor, Virginia Shreve, who visited her often when she could.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Beckwith Apostolic Church, Beckwith, with Pastor Richard Barker and the Rev. Bobby Ayers II officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
Friends may call from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the Beckwith Apostolic Church.
Pallbearers will be Keith Elswick, J.R. Toney, Shawn Evans, Johnny Hendricks, Arnie Maynard, and Tim Vicars.
Edith C. Bakalis
FOREST HILL — Edith C. Bakalis, 91, of Forest Hill, died at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2005.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hinton. There will be no visitation.

UNION — Clarence Ernest Brown, 81, of Union, passed away Friday night, Nov. 18, 2005.

Opal Zetta Collins
Opal Zetta Collins of Sophia passed away from this life at 3:50 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005.
She moved on to glory surrounded by her five children, her daughter-in-law and grandson.
Opal was born May 3, 1916, in McDowell County, W.Va. She was the daughter of the late George and Ollie Rowland.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, David W. Collins, in 1988.
Mom and Dad moved to Sophia in 1955 and spent the remainder of their life on Dunn Street. Mom worked at the Sophia Laundromat for several years and always cherished the many friends she made while working.
Her pride and joy were her five surviving children: Margaret Jane Petry and husband, Ernest, of Rhonda, Anna Marie Ferguson, who lived with her and was her caregiver for the past 18 years, Patsy Sue Smith and husband, Hanes, of Beckley, Kathleen Waldron and husband, Herb, of Glen Daniel, and CMSgt. (USAFR) John Edward Collins and wife, Sharon, of Bonaire, Ga.; grandchildren, Betty Jane Marks, Ernestine McCoy, John Taylor Ferguson, Ernest Len Petry Jr., Ernest D. Nichols Jr., George David Nichols, Phillip Martin Browning Jr., David Lee Browning and Kevin Lee Collins; 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family would like to pass on their sincere appreciation to Dr. Joseph Golden, emergency room staff, and the S.I.C.U. unit of Raleigh General Hospital which has served us well in our time of need.
Service will be 1 p.m. today, Nov. 20, 2005, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dewey Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Sylvia D. Herron
Sylvia D. Herron, 82, of Shady Spring, formerly of Eccles, passed away at home on Nov. 18, 2005, following a long illness, with her family by her side.
Sylvia was born on Sept. 3, 1923, to the late Haven G. and Fannie Mae Newman Dickens at Maynor. Sylvia was of the Christian faith.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Collins and Pansy Dickens; and a brother, Fred Arless Dickens.
Sylvia leaves behind her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Carl Herron; three daughters and two sons, Patricia Pena of Fayetteville, Roger Herron and wife Drema of Riverside, Ohio, James C. Herron and wife Linda of Eccles, Sharon Smith and husband Jim of Shady Spring, and Teresa Webb and husband Kevin of Glen Daniel. Sylvia had 11 grandchildren, Michael Herron, Tammie McGraw, Shaun Pena, Kelly Pena, Eric Herron, Laura Bilbrey, Debbie Covey and husband Bryant, Jaime Rhyan and husband Dustin, Jimmy Smith and wife Detra, Amanda Webb, and Kevin Carl Webb. Some of her grandchildren fondly called her “Gilley.” Four great-grandchildren, Christopher, Chase, Mikayla, and Niki, and one expected in early summer; and a special friend, Thelma Smith. Sylvia also leaves behind four sisters and a brother, Ruby Fedlock, Stella Hamm, Loretta Murphy, and Patty Booth, all of Virginia, and Norman Dickens of California.
She loved her family beyond imagination and will be sadly missed by all.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the Melton Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Delmas Cox officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park cemetery, Beckley.
Friends may call this ev-ening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ruth Ann Bailey Jackson
Ruth Ann Bailey Jackson, formerly of Beckley, was called to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005. Mrs. Jackson died suddenly at her home in Columbus, Ohio.
She was the daughter of the late Woodrow Sidney and Elizabeth Anna Lee Brown Bailey. She was born in Glen Daniel on July 10, 1944, and attended Trap Hill High School. She will be sadly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Carlos Ray Bailey.
Survivors include two daughters, Jacquelyn Ruth Jackson of Columbus and Donna Marie Kelley; two granddaughters, Veronica and Michelle; brothers, Ronald Bailey and wife Sandra of Beckley, Charles Bailey and wife Patty of Shady Spring, Woody Bailey and wife Peggy of Beckley, Russell Bailey and wife Lee Ann of Glen Daniel, Darrell Bailey and wife Ruth of Whitesville, Paul Bailey and wife Doris of Roanoke, Va., and Elmer Bailey and wife Evelyn of Danville, Va.; sisters, Kathern Athey and husband Orville of Martinsville, Va., Shirley Lafferty and husband Agee of Vinton, Va., and Sandra Harvey of Beckley. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the Melton Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Ken Sowder and Rev. Thomas Newman officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis cemetery, Mt. Tabor Road, Beckley.

Robert E. Keesee, 86, of Beckley, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following a long illness.

Violet B. McClanahan
Violet B. McClanahan, 82, of Beckley, passed away Nov. 17, 2005.
Born June 22, 1923, she was the daughter of the late John Bunk and Edith Greer Ewing.
Mrs. McClanahan was a loving mother and homemaker.
Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, George E. McClanahan; and a daughter, Gloria Plumley; two sisters, Bessie and Dessie Ewing; and two brothers, Emmitt Ewing and Leonard Hanks.
Those left to cherish her loving memory include daughters, Melinda Cumbow and her husband, Charles, of Leonardtown, Md., and Betty McClanahan; a sister, Betty Godby and husband, Leonard, of Beckley; four grandsons; one granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Forrest Gray officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Mrs. McClanahan’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the service.
