Lucille Arbutus Chewning

TUG CREEK — Lucille Arbutus Chewning, 72, went home to be with the Lord at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at Summers County ARH Hospital in Hinton, surrounded by her family, after a long illness.

Born Aug. 27, 1934, at Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Roy N. and Lonnie R. Grimmett Bennett.

Lucille retired from the Nu-Way Cleaners in 1998. She enjoyed camping, sewing and cooking dinners for her family after church on Sundays and holidays. She was of the Baptist faith.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Paul Robert Chewning, on Nov. 17, 1999, and a brother, Ashley Bennett, on Nov. 15, 1999.

She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Lacy “Pete” Chewning; three sons, Darrell Chewning and wife, Cassie, of Tug Creek, Harold Chewning and companion, Kay Hall, of Flat Top and David Chewning and companion, Patty Yopp, of Lowell; two daughters, Linda Brandon and husband, Mike, and Brenda Cole, all of Tug Creek; daughter-in-law, Nancy Chewning of Tug Creek; two brothers, William Fox and wife, Nancy, of Germantown, Ohio, and Roy Bennett and wife, Freda, of Middletown, Ohio; six sisters, Mary Madline Meadows and Glenna Parker, both of Hinton, Loraine Collins of Middletown, Josie Farley and husband, Ray, of Peebles, Ohio, Helen Hall and husband, Bert, of Trenton, Ohio, and Irene Tincher of Greensboro, N.C.; grandchildren, Michelle Merrill, whom she reared, and her husband, Adam, of Judson, Rhonda Yopp and husband, Michael, of Lowell, Donna Boone and husband, Shane, of Alderson, Teresa Cole of Hilldale, Alicia Zimmerman and Jason Chewning of Tug Creek, Derrick Chewning, Judson Yopp of Lowell, Laura St. Clair and husband, Shane, of Jumping Branch, Renae Jones and husband, Geoff, of Forest Hill and Craig Brandon of Tug Creek; great-grandchildren, Shawn and Ericia Merrill, Rochelle, Katelyn and Hayley Yopp, Caleb, Casey and Cara Boone, Colton Zimmerman, Carley and Matthew St. Clair, Logan, Levi and Lawson Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with Harry Pilkington officiating. Burial will follow in Chewning Family cemetery, Tug Creek.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

EDMOND — Carl Blaine Cox Jr., 24, of Edmond, died Monday, May 28, 2007.

Virginia Mattie DiLorenzo

MONROE, Ga. — Virginia Mattie DiLorenzo, 86, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, May 27, 2007, at Anmed Health Center in Anderson, S.C.

Born Sept. 17, 1920, in Buckingham County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Melvin Stanley and Edith Eppard Stanley.

Mrs. DiLorenzo had resided in Monroe for 13 years, moving from Beckley where she lived most of her life and was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She was a retired kitchen employee of St. Francis de Sales Catholic School. She was very active in FISH (Faith In Serving Humanity) in Monroe and was a member of St. Anna’s Catholic Church in Monroe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis DiLorenzo; and a son, Milton “Buster” Watkins.

Survivors include her children, Mary (Barney) Atkinson of Anderson, Mauro (Nancy) DiLorenzo of Beckley, Palley (Cindy) DiLorenzo of Monroe, Joe DiLorenzo of Nashville, Tenn., and Ed West of Kennesaw, Ga.; sisters, Annie Berry of Farmville, Va. and Margaret Carter of Farmville; a brother, Melvin Stanley of Richmond, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral Liturgy will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Beckley, with the Rev. Pericles Malacaman officiating. Rite of Committal will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, where a Christian prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. by the Rev. Mr. Don Wise.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy DiLorenzo, Justin DiLorenzo, Joe DiLorenzo, David West, Todd Morrison and Jamie Spinks.

Natividad Furiscal

Natividad Fulgar Furiscal, of Pikeview Drive, Beckley, formerly of Sta. Magdalena, Sorsogon, Philippines, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. She was 90 years of age.

Dustin Tyler Hughes

HICO — Dustin Tyler Hughes, 22, our wonderful son, Dustin, entered into rest with the Lord on Monday, May 27, 2007.

He was born Aug. 29, 1984, in Charleston, the son of Larry Hughes of Hico and Charlene Crumrine Hughes of Oak Hill.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Courtney Bethe Hughes, on Oct. 20, 2002, and Ashley Allyn Hughes, on March 3, 2005; maternal grandparents, Charles and Nancy Crumrine; and paternal grandfather, Paul Hughes.

Dustin was an iron worker by occupation, a former employee of Gino’s of Ansted and a Christian. He was a 2002 graduate of Midland Trail High School.

Survivors are his parents, Charlene Hughes of Oak Hill and Larry Hughes of Hico; a brother, Jordan Boone Hughes, residing with his parents; his grandmother, Betty Jean Hartley Hughes of Falls View; and several aunts and uncles.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Sunday Road Baptist Church, Hico, with Pastor Allen Donaldson and Pastor Sam R. Calloway Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Hico.

Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

Jan Miller LaFoe, 61, of Beckley, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at Bowers Hospice House following a long illness.

There will be no service or visitation.

Christopher Lee Legg

HICO — Christopher Lee Legg, 23, passed away suddenly Monday, May 28, 2007, on Stringtown Road at Hico.

He was born April 3, 1984, in Beckley, the son of Sharon Hoy of Charleston and Donald Legg of Hico.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mary Hall; and his paternal grandparents, Johnny and Florence Legg.

Christopher attended Riverside High School at Quincy. He was a lover of the outdoors and spent much of his time hunting, fishing and motorcycle riding. He was a construction worker.

Survivors include his dad, Donald Legg of Hico; his mother, Sharon Hoy and a special friend, Fred T. Kerns, of Charleston; a brother, Donald Thomas Legg and his wife, Tara, of Hico; a niece, Tatum Legg of Hico; maternal grandfather, Donald Flint of Lookout; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He will be sadly missed by his mother, father and brother who loved him very much. A special thanks to family and friends for all their kindness and love during this heart-breaking situation.

Service will be 8 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with the Rev. Danny Legg officiating. Burial will follow in Legg cemetery, Hico.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel.

Edna Lorine Lilly

HINTON — Edna Lorine Lilly, 87, of 103 Locust St., went to be with her Lord at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a long illness.

She was beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Born March 26, 1920, in Clifton Forge, Va., she was the daughter of the late A.W. and Anna Ma-rie Johns Clinebell.

Mrs. Lilly was a graduate of Hinton High School, a former member of the Hinton Women’s Club and a faithful member of Central Baptist Church in Hinton for more than 50 years. She had been employed by Columbia Gas Corp. and retired in 1984 from the West Virginia-American Water Co.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.C. Lilly; a daughter, Karen Lee Lilly Williams; two brothers, Eddie and John; and a sister, Charlotte Hudnall Fulmer.

Survivors include a son, Chilton Lilly of Elkview, with whom she resided for the past 15 months; grandson, D.E. Williams of Princeton; a granddaughter, Michelle Lee Williams Comer of Cincinnati, Ohio; and six great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Central Baptist Church, Hinton, with Pastor Roy Lee Honaker Jr. officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park Mausoleum.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Lilly, Phillip Gwinn, Billy Don Farley, Roy Carter, Ray Pivont, Jim Gore and Terry Payne.

Gloria C. Richardson

Gloria C. Richardson, 61, of Rockhouse Road, Lester, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at her home following a sudden illness.

Born in Columbia, S.C., on Feb. 1, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Ernest R. Crout and Thelma Haltiwanger Crout.

She was a homemaker and of the Lutheran faith. She had made her home at Lester for the past 20 years.

Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Boies H. Richardson; a son, Michael Richardson and wife, Cynthia, of Lester; a daughter, Holly Richardson of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a sister, Kathy Hutchinson of Ingles, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Brittany, Gunner, and Lena.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Ardeth Bailey officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Carolyn Sue Hutchens Short

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Carolyn Sue (Hutchens) Short passed away on Monday, May 28, 2007, in Overland Park after a brave battle with colon cancer.

Carolyn was born in Beckley in 1948. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and Beckley College. She moved to southern California and then returned to Beckley in 1978 to serve the executives of Westmoreland Coal Co. She moved to Tallahassee, Fla., in the early 1990s where she was a frequent volunteer at Birdsong Arboretum as well as her children’s schools. She moved to Las Vegas, Nev., in the late ’90s where she helped run a small business. She relocated with the business to Overland Park in 2002 and worked until the month of her death. Carolyn loved to travel and was a British car enthusiast, winning several prizes at nationally sanctioned car shows.

She is survived by her husband, L. Mark Short, and her three children, Phillip C. Meyers of Greenwich, Conn., Jennifer L. Kemp of New Orleans, La., and Savanna K. Kemp of Overland Park. She is also survived by a large and loving extended family.

A very special thank you to the loving care given by the professionals at Kansas City Cancer Center on Holmes Boulevard.

A viewing will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 1, followed by service at 7 p.m., at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.

As an alternative to flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Carolyn’s name to the Kansas City Hospice Foundation, 9221 Ward Parkway, Suite 100, Kansas City, MO 64114 or Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Attn: Gifts & Donations, 1275 York Ave., New York, NY 10021.

Glennis Roy Stidam, 78, of Beckley, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at Raleigh General Hospital.
