Beth Cunningham Petro-Owens

DUNBAR — Beth Cunningham Petro-Owens, formerly of Crab Orchard, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2007.

She attended Rock Branch Independent Community Church, where she was a member of the Tuesday Morning Rummage Ladies Group.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Owens, and her parents, Sanford and Charlotte Cunningham.

Beth is survived by her siblings, Pamela Nelson, Melissa Maker both of Dunbar, Don Cunningham of Cross Lanes, Tim Cunningham of Orange Park, Fla., Sam Cunningham of Winfield; sons, Michael Petro of Barboursville, David Petro of Ashland, Ky.; several nieces and nephews; and three great nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., today, Wednesday, June 20, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. She will be laid to rest along side her husband in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, at a later date.

Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

Freda Sherlene Shumate

OCEANA — Freda Sherlene Shumate, 52, departed this life Monday, June 18, 2007, surrounded by her loving family at her son’s home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services entrusted to Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.

Rachel Bartrum Skaggs

ANSTED — Rachel Bartrum Skaggs, 86, of Ansted, passed away at her home Monday June 18, 2007 following a long illness.

Born Oct. 26, 1920, at Ansted, she was the daughter of the late Zida Emory and Shirley Frances Price Bartrum.

She was a retired custodian for the Christian School in Delaware. She was a 80 plus year member of the Ansted Baptist Church in Ansted and a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Smith Cottle of Fayetteville and a step daughter, Patricia Terry of Drennen; two sons, James O. Smith of Semmes, Ala. and Roger Allen Skaggs of Fayetteville; two sisters, Goldie May Roberson and Rose Myles of Ormond Beach, Fla. She is survived by eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Ansted, with Dr. Jack Eades officiating. Burial will follow in the Restlawn Memory Gardens at Victor.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Leonard Wood

Leonard Wood, 84, of Beckley formerly of Hinton, died at 6 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2007, at the Raleigh General Hospital at Beckley following a long illness.

Born January 5, 1923 at Hinton, he was the son of the late William L. and Etta Foster Wood.

Mr. Wood lived all of his life in Summers and Raleigh Counties.

He was a Retired Postal Worker and a former Hinton City Police Officer. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, a member of the Central Baptist Church who loved singing in the choir. He was a former member of the Hinton Masonic Lodge, the Eastern Star and White Shrine. Leonard also helped form the Rainbow Girls in Hinton.

Preceded in death by his first wife, Willie M. Grimmett Wood.

Survived by his wife of thirteen years, Blanche Adkins Cooper Wood, one daughter, Janet Scott and husband Eddie of Prichard, three stepdaughters, Regina Welsch of Salem, Ohio, Charlotte Massie and Husband Dale of Columbus, Ohio and Jacqueline Standiford and Husband Dick of Sherrodsville, Ohio, two grandchildren, five step grandchildren, several great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and one brother,

William “Tootie” Wood of Pratt.

Funeral service will be held 12 noon Thursday, June 21, 2007 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastors Roy L. Honaker Jr. and Grover Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral parlors.

Jimmy and David Wood, Connie Collins, Dale Massie, Dick Standiford and Troy Herbert will serve as pallbearers.

Arrangements are by the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors of Hinton.

Barney White Jr.

OAK HILL — Barney White Jr. 75, of Oak Hill, died Tuesday morning, May 29, 2007, at his daughter’s home in Beckley following an extended illness.

He was the son of the late Barney White Sr. and Pauline Perkins White and was born June 29, 1931, in Gatewood, Fayette County.

He was a retired letter carrier for the Fayetteville Post Office. Barney was also retired from the U.S. Army, serving 20 years, including a tour in Vietnam.

He was a member of the American Legion, Moose Club, Shriner’s and Masons. He loved to read and bowl and was an avid football, basketball and NASCAR fan. As a young man he raced motorcycles and cars. He was a ski instructor and a mountain climbing instructor. He loved hunting, deep sea fishing and spending time on his houseboat at Summersville Lake with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Zoe Jackson White, and two sisters, Eary “Woogie” Smith of North Carolina and Nira “Sissy” Wise of Ohio.

Survivors include a brother, Paul White of Fayetteville; sister, Donna Gaye Dalton of Ohio; sons, Tommy White and wife, Tina, of Fayetteville and Mike White and wife, Marilyn, of North Carolina; daughters, Cheryl Winter and husband, Mack, of Beckley and Kay White of Fayetteville and his first wife, Norma Treadwell Burdiss; seven grandchildren, Tonya and Thomas Michael White, Jerod White, Zachary White, Craig, Luke and Jacob Winter; great-granddaughter, Felicity Winter; stepdaughters Debbie and husband, George Bryan, Daun Jackson and Donna Jackson and husband, Warren.

His desire to be cremated will be arranged by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. His request was not to have funeral or flowers but instead for those who wanted to donate to his favorite charity organization: Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3229 Burret Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229-3095.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Plateau Medical Center, Dr. and Mrs. Serafino Madudoc and his office staff for their care and kindness and to those who kept him in their prayers and were consistent in keeping in touch with him through phone calls, cards and visitation.

A celebration of his life will be noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at the American Legion in Fayetteville.

William Edward Perry

Ed Perry departed this life on Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at home of natural causes.

Ed was born Jan. 19, 1917, at Freeman, the son of Bruce and Margaret Shupe Perry.

Mr. Perry was preceded in death by his brother, Clyde; and four sisters, Nellie, Irene, Genevieve and Nina.

Ed is survived by his wife, Ann; daughters, Renda Perry of Beckley and Catherine Grimes of Daytona Beach, Fla., and her husband, Ed; and a son, William Edward Perry Jr. of Beckley.

Ed had made a confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and attended service at the Family Worship Center.

He was a World War II Army veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star.

As a young man, Ed was employed as a pressman at Kester Drycleaners of Beckley. He was a professional driver for Henry Roles of Black Diamond Distributors and was last employed in security at Raleigh General Hospital.

It was Ed’s wish that his body be cremated. At his request, there will be no visitation or viewing.

To be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He that believeth in me though he were dead yet shall he live, and he that believeth in me shall never die.”

The family requests in lieu of flowers donations of sympathy be made to the Family Worship Center, P.O. Box 1123, Beckley, WV 25802-1123.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements.

Faye Marie Pettry

Faye Marie Pettry, 77, of Beckley passed away Monday, April 3, 2006.

Born Nov. 2, 1929, at Sundial Road, she was the daughter of the late Otis Pettry and the late Dillie Barefield Pettry.

Faye loved to garden, cook, sew, shop and loved her grandkids.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Pettry; a son, Randall Pettry; three brothers, Otis, Carlos and Billy Pettry; four sisters, Debbie, Mary, Arizona Pettry and Ruby Debroski; and a longtime friend, Emmitt Sprague.

Those left to cherish her memory include her seven daughters, Linda French and husband, Charles, of Arnett, Judy Henderson and husband, Tommy, of Charleston, Nettie Henderson and husband, John, of Bridgeport, Joyce Young and husband, Billy, of Beckley, Carolyn Daniel and husband, Stormy, of Pennsylvania, Kiska Sifers and husband, Stanton, of Ohio and Sandy of Ravenswood; three sons, Paul Alderman Jr. of Hurricane, Don Pettry and wife, Mindy, of Clarksburg and Roger Pettry and wife, Rose, of Fairdale; brothers and sisters, Pauline, Eugene, James, Arley, Willie Pettry and Edna Browning; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Paul Zutaut officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family noon until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Geneva Mae Pittman

Geneva Mae Pittman, 74, of Glen White, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, with her family by her side at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born Sept. 19, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Willie Hopkins and Exie Crawford Hopkins.

She was preceded in death by an infant son and two brothers, Robert and Clifford.

Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years, Guy Pittman; sons, David Pittman and wife, Sandra, of Sophia and Richard Pittman and wife, Vickie, of Crab Orchard; daughter, Ramona Cummings and husband, Steven, of Mabscott; brothers, Douglas Hopkins and wife, Patricia, of Crab Orchard, C.W. Hopkins of Shady Spring and Russell Hopkins and wife, Mary, of Beckley; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; host of friends and relatives; and special friend, Ray Tate. She loved talking with friends on Tennessee fishing trips, especially Tim Wagers. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Kenneth Parent officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Ronald Lee Ruff

PAX — Ronald Lee Ruff, 52, of Pax, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a sudden illness.

Born June 19, 1953, in Beckley, he was the son of the late George Albert and Louise O’Neal Ruff.

Mr. Ruff was a security guard at Raleigh General Hospital. He was a member of Pax Church of God and was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Robert Ruff; and another brother, Sam Ruff.

Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Sizemore Ruff; two daughters, Melisha Bell of Pax and Debra Aboulhouda of Beckley; two stepsons; five grandchildren, Farrah, Jamison, Heather, Hunter and Elijah; three brothers, George Ruff and wife, Lena, of Oak Hill, Eric Ruff of Oak Hill and Ricky Morrison of Pax; two sisters, Wanda Adkins and husband, Tracy, of Packs Branch and Evelyn Foster and husband, Carmet, of Kilsyth; several nieces and nephews; and mother-in-law, Rose Mary Sizemore of Rock View.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pax Church of God with the Rev. Vicki Buzminsky officiating. Burial will follow in Pax Community cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill.

Pallbearers will be William Bailey, Robert Adkins, Preston Ruff, Matthew Bailey, Kermit Foster and Garrett Lambert.
