Vernon Nelson Smith

LASHMEET — Vernon Nelson Smith, 42, of Young’s Trailer Court, Lashmeet, died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born Jan. 5, 1963, in Landstuhl, Germany, he was the son of Connie Burks Smith Walker and her husband James of Itmann and the late Roger Nelson Smith.

He was a disabled carpenter and a graduate of Mullens High School. He was a member of the Church of God in Newbern, Va. Vernon had been a resident of Lashmeet since 2004, moving from Pulaski, Va.

In addition to his mother and stepfather, survivors include his wife, Kathy Odle Smith; son, Christopher Coty Smith, and daughter, Linda Sierra Smith, both of Lashmeet; and sister, Vanessa Young and her husband, Rodney, of Dublin, Va.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home, Princeton, with Pastor Winfred Keene officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Park cemetery, Bluewell.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call noon until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Billy Lee Taylor

Billy Lee Taylor of Glen Daniel departed this world on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. He was 74 years of age.

Born Jan. 27, 1930, at Dameron, he was the son of the late James and Mabel Stewart Taylor.

A lifelong resident of the Glen Daniel community, Billy was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He had worked in mining and timbering. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing, camping, joking and talking with family and friends. Billy will always be remembered by those who knew him as a kind-hearted, generous and loving man who could always make the days brighter with his jokes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ronnie, Olen, Shelby, Rome and Paul Taylor; and sisters, Mary Tyree, Vivian Stewart, Icie Dickens and Sadie Phipps.

Survivors include his loving wife of 23 years, Frankie Taylor; a brother, David Taylor and his wife, Jackie, of Beckley; sisters, Goldie Dameron and her husband, Larry, and Ruth Birchfield and her husband, Clarence, all of Glen Daniel; four stepchildren, June Bilbrey, John Henry, Jerry Lee and Jimmy Franklin Bonds; 32 nieces and nephews; and a special friend who has been like a daughter, Jane Davis.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson cemetery, Dameron, with the Rev. David Trump officiating. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery.

The family would like to thank Elite Home Health and his nurse, Priscilla Osborne, for their help and loving care and the Raleigh County Commission on Aging.

Roger Lee Basham

Roger Lee Basham, 55, of Coal City, passed away Nov. 24, 2005.

Roger was born April 4, 1950, at Slab Fork; he was the son of the late Thurmond Basham and the late Hallie Lawson Basham.

Roger previously attended Stepping Stone Church at Surveyor.

Other than his parents, Roger was preceded in death by an infant sister, Lorretta Basham, and a brother, Carl Basham.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Sharon Rhodes Basham of Coal City; two sons, Robbie Basham and wife, Laura, of Beckley and Scott Basham and wife, Jane, of Crab Orchard; three daughters, Rebecca Reed and husband, Kenny, of Herndon, Alesia Basham of Maxwell Hill, and Samantha Basham of Maxwell Hill; three brothers, Denny Basham and wife, Deidra, of Glen Daniel, Billy Basham and wife, Rita, of Lester, and Jimmy Joe Basham and wife, Anna, of Lester; five sisters, Juanita Lehman and companion Jim Hendricks of Glen White, Debbie Horton and husband Jackie of Slab Fork, Ina Mae Pierce of Lester, Linda Carter and husband Joe of Midway and Anna Rae Farmer of Coal City; and five grandchildren, Little Robbie, Devan, JP, Little Scottie, and Katie. He will also be sadly missed by Eddie Combs, whom he considered a son; and his special friends, Joe, Ray, and Elmer.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Marvin Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow in Acord Mountain cemetery.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, is serving the family.

Goldie Lyons

Goldie Lyons, 82, of Cranberry, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at her home, following a short illness.

Lacy Jacob ‘Buck’ Milam

FAIRLEA — Lacy Jacob “Buck” Milam, 81, of Fairlea, formerly of Alderson and Helen, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at his home in Fairlea, following a long illness.

Born Dec. 28, 1923, at Helen, he was the son of the late Craig and Lottie Elizabeth Dison Milam.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Thomas Milam; a son, Lacy Joseph Milam; a brother, James Franklin Milam; and a sister, Nancy White.

Mr. Milam was a retired coal miner, having retired after 35 years of service. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Army, and was a member of the Madeline Freewill Baptist Church, Amigo. Mr. Milam enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include a loving daughter, Penney Ann Young of Beckley; daughter, Nancy Ann Moody of Wyoming County; two sisters, Millie Ann Cochran and her husband Wayne of Alderson and Martha Millsaps of Sophia; a brother, Harry T. Milam and his wife Irene of Mount Airy, N.C.; three grandsons, Lawrence Roy Richards II of Beckley, Andrew Allen Richards and his wife Tammy of White, Ga., and Randy Allen Milam of Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Hannah Celeste Richards of White, Ga., and Brandon Milam of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with Pastor Ernie Moye officiating. Burial will follow in the Fletcher Addition of the Alderson cemetery, Alderson.

Friends may call today from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Lawrence Richards, Charlie Millsaps, Doug King, Ernest Millsaps, James Graham, and Michael Manzano.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by Gauley Bridge VFW Post 8366, Gauley Bridge.

Estil Owens

MCGRAWS — Estil Owens, 63, of McGraws, passed away Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, in a Beckley hospital.

Born Aug. 2, 1942, at Sabine, he was the son of Hessie Tilley Owens Bowers and the late Kelley McKinley Owens.

Mr. Owens was a retired coal miner from Pittston Coal Co. and was a U.S. Army veteran.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Trump; and his stepfather, Carl Bowers.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Frances Carolyn Owens; four children, Annette Renee Hartman, Patricia Gail Owens, Estil O’Dell Owens, Jr., and Russell Dane Owens; four brothers; two sisters; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tilley-Tolliver cemetery, Twin Falls State Park, with the Rev. Billy Beheler officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Estil’s name to the American Cancer Society, Suite 6, 301 RHL Blvd., Charleston, WV 25309.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Eva Mae Harvey Pence, 94, formerly of Greenville and Peterstown, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at the Grand Strand Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born July 13, 1911, at Wikel, she was a daughter of the late William Richard and Ada Helen Copeland Harvey.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forest D. Pence; twin sons, Billy Lee and Bobby Dean; and a sister, Mary H. Worley.

Mrs. Pence was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, a member of the Greenville United Methodist Church where she had been active in the church choir and the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Greenville Home Extension Club, was Past Worthy Matron and a member for over 50 years of Chapter #122 O.E.S., Union. She was past president of the Monroe County Council on Aging, and served several years in the Silver Haired Legislature in Charleston; she was past president of the Monroe County Federation of Democrat Women, and past Recording Secretary for the State of West Virginia. Mrs. Pence had worked for the State Road Commission in Union, and in the Senate Journal Room at the State Capital while Congress was in session. Mrs. Pence retired in 1991 at the age of 80 from the Title V Program at the Lindside Senior Center where she had been a clerk for several years. Eva was dearly loved by her family and her many friends. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by a daughter, Marshalene “Marsha” Evans and husband Don of Narrows, Va.; one son, Edwin Carrol Pence and wife Linda with whom she made her home in Myrtle Beach, S.C.; grandchildren, Vicki Blevins of Richmond, Va., Barry Evans and wife Traci of Pearisburg, Va., Eddie Pence and wife Tracey of Hollywood, Calif., and Mack Pence of Houston, Texas; great-grandchildren, Brad Blevins of New York, N.Y., Matthew Blevins of Kalamazoo, Mich., Alexis and Alea Evans of Pearisburg, Va.; nephew, Bob Akers and wife Verlene of Hagerstown, Md.; honorary grandchildren, Kim, Nick, and Jack George of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Meverell Pence of Deltona, Fla., Luster Pence of Lindside, Mervin and Mildred Pence of Greenville, and Elizabeth Pence of Lundhurst, Va.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, with Revs. Hughllyn Wilson and Wayne Monroe officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Hedding United Methodist Church cemetery, Lillydale.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to Greenville United Methodist Church or First United Methodist Church, Narrows, Va.

Katherine B. Peters

COOL RIDGE — Katherine B. Peters, 86, of Cool Ridge, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, following a long illness.

Born at Cool Ridge on June 20, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Burl O. and Dona B. Lilly Epperly.

She was a member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church and Lifetime resident of Raleigh County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Peters; her son, Dr. John B. Peters; four brothers, Acel, Ralph, Wayland, and Claude Epperly; six sisters, Lena Epperly, Lilly Pauline Epperly, Nellie Epperly Clark, Lakie Epperly Carr Shrewsbury, Audry Epperly Sullens, and Joy Epperly Allen.

Our beloved “granny” will be sadly missed and memories of her will be cherished.

Survivors include her sons, Wayne Peters and wife Ruth of Crab Orchard and Thomas Peters of Cool Ridge; daughter-in-law, Wanda Peters of Daniels; sisters, Mary Okes and husband Clyde of Cool Ridge and Geneva Shrewsbury Lilly of Daniels; six grandchildren, Cindy Carpenter and husband Wesley of Manassas, Va., Jon Alan Peters and wife Denise of Angels Rest, Calif., Kevin McGill and wife Asia of Goldsboro, N.C., Beth Weisbrodt and husband Robert of Centreville, Va., Debbie Friend and husband David of Exchange, and Lorie Kelly and husband Paul of Derry, N.H.; 12 great-grandchildren, Brandon, Katie, and Emily Carpenter, Scottie and Lindsey Peters, Brittney and Taylor McGill, David and Kathryn Weisbrodt, Jennifer Friend, Kristy and Paul Kelly; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with Rev. Phil Sheilds officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may call two hours prior to services.

Pallbearers will be Kevin and Taylor McGill, Brandon Carpenter, Mason Epperly, Fred Okes, Steve Sullens, Roger Yost, and Richard Lilly.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John B. Peters Memorial Fund at West Virginia University or the Crab Orchard Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mildred E. Ayers

HINTON — Mildred Elizabeth Ayers, 91, of Rt. 1, formerly of Green Sulphur Springs, died at 3:05 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation at Hilldale following a long illness.

Born Feb. 18, 1914, at Green Sulphur Springs, she was the daughter of the late Franklin and Martha Ellen Marion.

Ms. Ayers was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie E. Ayers, on April 29, 1975.

Also preceded by two sons, Dallas Ayers and Elmer Ayers; three sisters, Nova Richmond, Rachel Johnson and Barbara Wilkerson; three brothers, David Marion, Woodrow Marion and Newman Marion.

Survivors include two sons, Samuel Franklin Ayers and wife Deloris of Fredericksburg, Va., and Harvey Earl Ayers and wife Sharon of Crawley, W.Va.; five daughters, Geraldine Turner and husband Donald of Partlow, Va., Maydell Burdette and husband Glispy of Meadow Creek, W.Va., Faith A. Bragg and companion Gene Kelly of Beckley, Martha J. Lilly and husband Harold of Meadow Bridge, and Bertie Jo Cyrus of Oak Hill; a daughter-in-law, Donna Ayers of Kernersville, N.C.; one sister, Beulah Murphy of Hawkinsville, Ga.; and a sister-in-law, Myrtle Holland of Hinton; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a host of friends also survive.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Bill Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Hallidan cemetery at Green Sulphur Springs.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

Family & friends will serve as pallbearers.
