Gary Hostetter

OAK HILL — Gary Hostetter, of Oak Hill, passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Oscar C. Hutchison

Oscar C. Hutchison, 88, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital after a recent illness.

Born July 30, 1918, in Forest Hill, Summers County, he was the son of the late Oscar C. and Emma Allen Hutchison.

He received a Standard Normal Teaching degree from Concord College in 1937 and served in World War II, where he was stationed in Okinawa. He attended WVU, from which he received a B.S. degree in agricultural education in 1948 and an M.S. Extension Education degree in 1966. Mr. Hutchison worked as area Extension agent in Mercer, Wyoming and McDowell counties from 1961 to 1964. In 1964, he was appointed Beckley area Extension director and worked there until his retirement in September 1983. He was a member of Epsilon Sigma Phi Extension honorary.

Mr. Hutchison was a member of United Methodist Temple in Beckley, where he was a longtime member of the choir and served on numerous committees and the board. He was past president of the Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce, served on the advisory board of Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley and was on the Board of Directors of the Beckley Farmers Market.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Glenna Mae, of Forest Hill, Summers County, whom he married on Aug. 23, 1946; and his brothers Thomas Vaughn, Oscar Neal and Robert Maston Hutchison.

Oscar is survived by his brother, Jimmie Maxwell Hutchison; longtime friend, partner and adopted mother of his children, Margaret A. Hambric; his sons, Oscar C. Hutchison III and wife, Carol, John A. Hutchison and wife, Viki, and Philip M. Hutchison and wife, Sheila; and his daughter, Cynthia H. Mayo and husband, Lynn. Mr. Hutchison has five grandchildren, Tess Kenney (husband Lance), Gabriella Brown (husband Jon); Thaddeus Hutchison, Hannah Mayo and Scott Mayo; and a great-grandson, Theron Brown.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at United Methodist Temple, Beckley, and one hour before service, to be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at United Methodist Temple. The Rev. Dan Johnson will officiate.

Graveside service will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday at Fairview Baptist Church cemetery, Forest Hill. Those wishing to attend the graveside service should plan to meet the family in the Fellowship Hall at Fairview Baptist Church prior to the service.

Family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to the United Methodist Foundation, Oscar C. Hutchison and Glenna R. Hutchison Memorial Trust Fund, c/o United Methodist Temple, 201 Temple Drive, Beckley.

Ina Atwood Keneda

Ina Atwood Keneda, 88, of Coal City, flew away on the wings of an Angel on Monday, Jan. 15, 2007.

Born April 14, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Madison and Emma Hayhurst Bennett.

She loved church, sewing and reading.

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her first husband, Alvin W. Atwood; second husband, R.H. Keneda; an infant son, Fredrick; a daughter, Kathy Atwood Meadows; son-in-law, Curt Newton; great-granddaughter, Krista Crouse; brothers, Fred and Glen Bennett; and sister, Gertrude Shrader.

Those left to cherish her memory include five daughters, Rosalie Newton, Dixie Snuffer and her husband, Ira, and Sharon Lewis and her husband, Thomas “Tom,” all of Coal City, Donna Cromer and her husband, Dewey “Tom,” of Coal City and Beckley and Peggy Young and her husband, Jack, of Ohio; three sons, David W. Atwood and Timothy Atwood and his wife, Beverly, all of Coal City, and Daniel Atwood and his wife, Brenda, of Beckley; a stepson, Roy Keneda and his wife, Joyce, of Georgia; a sister, Mildred Shrader of Mullens; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at Coal City Freewill Baptist Church with Pastors Charlie Brown and Frank Lyons officiating.

Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Pallbearers will be Men of the Church.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.

Virginia S. ‘Ginny’ McCallister

ALDERSON –—Virginia S. “Ginny” McCallister, 77, of Alderson, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor, Va., following a short illness.

Born Feb. 28, 1929, at Grundy, Va., she was the daughter of the late William M. and Florence Eads Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Paul C. McCallister Sr., in 1995; two sons, Alan Eugene McCallister, in 1955, and Ross Emory McCallister, in 1985; a grandson, Eric Wayne McCallister, in 1991; two brothers, William M. Smith and Walter C. Smith; two half sisters, Ruth Jones and Frances Jones; and four half brothers, Archie Jones, Wilson Jones, Wade Jones, and James Jones.

Mrs. McCallister was a homemaker. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and sister. Mrs. McCallister was a faithful member of Feamster Memorial Freewill Baptist Church, Alderson, where she was a member of the Church Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons, Paul C. McCallister Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Alderson and Mark A. McCallister and his wife, Pam, of Alderson; a daughter, Judy A. Baker and her husband, Joe, of Alderson; a brother, Russell L. Smith and his wife, Sara, of Olney, Md.; brother-in-law, Lewis F. Merritt, of Alderson; special friend, Jane Tomlinson, of Lewisburg; 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at Feamster Memorial Freewill Baptist Church, Alderson, with the Rev. Hobert Mills and the Rev. Leotis Ward officiating. Burial will follow at Alderson cemetery.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson, and one hour before service Thursday at the church.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Beulah M. Meadows

HINTON — Beulah M. Meadows, 82, of Independence, Mo., formerly of Summers County, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at her home.

Rev. Harold Ray Murphy

The Rev. Harold Ray Murphy, 73, of Arnett, departed this life Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

He was born June 30, 1933, in Charleston, a son of the late Edward Lawrence and Lula (Elkins) Murphy. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda, and a sister, Charlotte Roush.

He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, and was a retired United Methodist minister. He was pastor of several churches throughout West Virginia, including the LeRoy charge, South Jackson County circuit, the Mount Hope circuit and the Rock Creek charge at Naoma.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce E. Foster Murphy; son, Edward Harold Murphy of Beckley; daughter, Kathy Scarberry of Syracuse, Ohio, and Deborah Keffer of Evans; stepson, Karl Eric Fritz of Beckley; stepdaughter, Katrina Malone of Sophia; sister, Alice Smith of Racine, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, with Pastor Shannon Skeen and the Rev. Rankin Roach officiating. Burial will follow in Independence cemetery, Sandyville, with military honors provided by the Jackson County veterans’ organizations.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bishop Felix Robinson, of 721 F St., Beckley, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at his home.

Maynard O. Smith

ASHTABULA, Ohio — Maynard Owen Smith, 86, of West Prospect Road, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at UH-Extended Care Campus (Heather Hill).

He was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Terry, the son of Frank and Nancy (Simmons) Smith, and had been an area resident since 1969.

Prior to his retirement on March 1, 1984, he worked in the maintenance department for the Coca-Cola Co., repairing and delivering vending machines throughout the area.

He attended Freedom Worship Center (now Harvest International Church) and was a regular at the Ashtabula Senior Center. He enjoyed bluegrass and gospel music, playing the guitar and being with his family.

His survivors include six children, Carol (Kermit) Gardner and Roger (Julia) Smith of Columbus, Ohio, Danny Smith and John (Marie) Smith, both of Beckley, Ramona (Kirk) Maynor of Beaver and Tom (Sharon) Smith of Conneaut, Ohio; his companion of 15 years, Leota Theriault; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha (Thompson) Smith, in 1985; a son, Ronald Smith; a daughter, Janet Smith; five sisters, Margaret Sawyers, Mary Hanshew, Mable Tingler, Myrtle Bragg, and Genevieve Simms; five brothers, Max Smith, James Franklin Smith in infancy, Melvin Smith, Madison “Rex” Smith, and “Marn” Smith; and his parents.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula. The Rev. Raymond Lamb, pastor of Conneaut Church of God, will officiate. Burial will be 1 p.m. Fruday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the Ashtabula Senior Citizens Center, 4632 Main Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004.

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Nell J. Randan Altizer died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007.

Private service was Wednesday at Highland Memorial Gardens, Godby.

Ernest Leamon Brown

CYCLONE — Ernest Leamon Brown departed this life Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital at the age of 64 years, nine months and 18 days following a long illness.

Born March 29, 1942, at Cyclone, he was the son of the late Mathers and Martha Bailey Brown.

Ernest was a member of Toler Baptist Church, having joined July 25, 1999. He loved the Lord and his family, and enjoyed reading his Bible. Ernest had a humble and kind spirit and was always joking and laughing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence Brown, Lanta Brown and Ronnie Brown; two sisters, Gaye Workman and Irene Brown; a half brother, Lonnie Brown; and a nephew, Arthur “Dale” Brown.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 25 years, Glenna Brown; a son, Gregory Brown and his wife, Tammy, of Pearisburg, Va.; two grandsons, Jarod and Austin Brown of Pearisburg; two sisters, Imogene Lusk and her husband, the Rev. Kennis Lusk, of Cyclone and Joyce Webb and her husband, Carlos, of Cyclone; two brothers, the Rev. Lucion Brown and his wife, Vicki, of Cyclone and Roamie Brown and wife, Emma Jean, of Bald Knob; brother-in-law, Emery Spence of Oceana; several nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own; and special friends, Mildred and Donna Acord, Matthew Toler and members of Toler Baptist Church.

A celebration of Ernest’s life will be 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Toler Baptist Church, Campus, with the Revs. Seldon Gibson, Merle Walls and Clarence Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Casketbearers will be nephews Tommy Brown, Joey Webb, Carl Webb, Richard Daniels, Keith Workman, Mike Workman, Gene Workman and Kris Spence.

A special “Thank you” to Pioneer Medical and to the doctors and nurses at Raleigh General Hospital your kindness much appreciated.

Services entrusted to Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.

David Elman Crotty

TEMPLE, Texas — David Elman Crotty, 68, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007.

Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Scanio & Harper Funeral Home, Airport Road, Temple. Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
